This paper investigates the relationships among land-use change, biological invasion, and interspecific competition in a tropical ecosystem by linking a behavioral model of land conversion by agriculture and an ecological model of interspecific competition between a native species and an exotic invader. The model is used to examine how relative farm prices and access to forest areas influence land clearing and thus the ability of the invasive species to eliminate the native species. Simulations show that only a 20% rise in relative prices and a 2.75% increase in forest access are necessary for this outcome to occur.

The conversion of natural forest to agroforestry plantations and annual cropping systems alters the soil habitat and food resources for biota, including earthworms. Native earthworm species may disappear whereas exotic species with greater tolerance of disturbance and less niche specialisation may thrive. The objective of the study was to compare the earthworm diversity in managed forest and agroforestry systems, which were cultivated for mixed plantation and annual crop production on Mount Gede, Indonesia. All the habitats in the study area were impacted by humans. The forest habitat was a managed forest, with a permanent tree cover, whereas mixed plantation had a partial shrub cover. Meanwhile, homogenous plantation was cultivated with annual crops. Among 3787 individuals collected during July–October 2012, five Oriental earthworm species were identified in the soil communities of Mount Gede: Drawida nepalensis, Notoscolex javanica, Pheretima pura-group, Polypheretima moelleri, and Polypheretima sempolensis. Also, 18 species were found that are reported to be non-Oriental in origin. Anthropogenic disturbance of forests on Mount Gede, due to conversion into plantations, alters the earthworm environment by increasing soil water content, temperature and total phosphorous content, while decreasing organic carbon. N. javanica was the only native species to survive this deforestation, while the exotic Ocnerodrilus occidentalis and Pontoscolex corethrurus thrived, becoming the eudominant species. From the forest area to the mixed and homogenous plantations, the predicted decreasing diversity is evidenced by the lowering trend of Shannon’s diversity index. In conclusion, the land-use change into mixed plantations and annual croplands has reduced earthworm diversity in this region of Mount Gede, Indonesia.

Abstrak  Pertumbuhan  penduduk dan dinamika pembangunan telah menggeser pemanfaatan lahan yang akhirnya menimbulkan kompleksitas permasalahan lahan yang semula berfungsi sebagai media bercocok tanam (pertanian), berangsur-angsur berubah menjadi multifungsi pemanfaatan. Berubahnya pemanfaatan lahan pertanian ke non pertanian dapat disebut juga sebagai alih fungsi lahan. Kabupaten Aceh Besar adalah salah satu kabupaten yang terus menghadapi permasalahan alih fungsi lahan, khususnya lahan sawah. Alih fungsi lahan ini mengakibatkan luas lahan sawah di Aceh Besar terus menurun. Lahan yang paling banyak mengalami alih fungsi lahan adalah jenis lahan sawah yang menjadi lahan non pertanian. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan terjadinya alih fungsi lahan sawah dan mengidentifikasi dampak sosial dan ekonomi yang dialami petani mantan pemilik lahan akibat alih fungsi lahan sawah menjadi lahan non pertanian. Berdasarkan hasil regresi secara parsial dari analisis regresi faktor harga jual, kebutuhan hidup dan kondisi lahan berpengaruh nyata terhadap konversi lahan sawah di  Kecamatan Baitussalam Kabupaten Aceh Besar. Bedasarkan hasil regresi secara serempak dari hasil regresi didapatkan bahwa harga jual, kebutuhan hidup dan kondisi lahan secara serempak mempengaruhi konversi lahan sawah di Kecamatan Baitussalam Kabupaten Aceh Besar. Berdasarkan isu dampak sosial sebagai akibat alih fungsi lahan di lihat dari keinginan kondisi lama, meningkatkan rasa kerjasama dan kekeluargaan, serta kemampuan memenuhi kebutuhan keluarga mendapatkan hasil yang positif dengan nilai ≥ 50%. Berdasarkan isu dampak ekonomi sebagai akibat alih fungsi lahan di lihat dari peningkatan pendapatan mendapatkan hasil yang positif dengan nilai ≥ 50%.Impact Of Paddy Fields Function  On Community Socio-Economic Conditions Of Baitussalam District, Aceh Besar RegencyAbstract  Population growth and the dynamics of development have shifted land use which eventually led to the complexity of the problem of land that used to function as a farming medium (agriculture), gradually becoming a multifunctional use. Changing the use of agricultural land to non-agriculture can also be referred to as land conversion. Aceh Besar District is one of the districts that continues to face the problem of land conversion, especially rice fields. The conversion of this land function has caused the area of paddy fields in Aceh Besar to continue to decline. The land that has experienced the most land use change is the type of rice field that becomes non-agricultural land. This study aims to identify the factors that cause the conversion of paddy fields and identify the social and economic impacts experienced by farmers former landowners due to the conversion of paddy fields to non-agricultural land. Based on the partial regression results from the regression analysis, the factors of selling price, life necessity and land conditions have a significant effect on the conversion of paddy fields in Baitussalam District, Aceh Besar District. Based on the simultaneous regression results from the regression results, it was found that the selling price, life needs and land conditions simultaneously affected the conversion of paddy fields in Baitussalam District, Aceh Besar District. Based on the issue of social impacts as a result of land use change seen from the desires of the old conditions, increasing the sense of cooperation and kinship, as well as the ability to meet family needs get positive results with a value of ≥ 50%. Based on the issue of economic impact as a result of the transfer of land functions, it can be seen from the increase in income that has a positive result with a value of ≥ 50%.

The occurrence of landslides can not be separated from conditions that are prone to landslide movements such as steep slopes and high rainfall. The occurrence of landslides is also exacerbated by the indiscipline of the community in using land according to its function, which is called land conversion which can be a trigger factor for landslides. Conducting research on land use change is important to see the impact caused by human activities. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of land conversion on landslide hazard levels in Samigaluh District, Kulon Progo Regency. The method in this research was descriptive quantitative using primary data, namely field surveys and secondary data collection. The steps on this research were conducting field observations about the occurrence of land conversion and then retrieving level of landslide hazard at the observation point of land use change. Data analysis was performed using ordinal logistic regression. The result of the analysis showed that the p value (0.036) <0.05 which meant H0 was rejected. Thus, at the 95% confidence level it could be said that the variable of land use change affected the level of landslide hazard in Samigaluh District, Kulon Progo Regency. This output could be considered for the community to use the land according to its function.  Key words: Land Function Change; Landslide; Ordinal

A diverse range of threats have been associated with managed-bee declines globally. Recent increases of two known threats, land-use change and pesticide use, have resulted from agricultural expansion and intensification notably in the top honey-producing state in the United States: North Dakota. This study investigated the dual threat from land conversion and pesticide use surrounding ~14,000 registered apiaries in North Dakota from 2001 to 2014. We estimated the annual total insecticide use (kg) on major crops within 1.6 km of apiary sites. Of the eight insecticides quantified, six showed significant increasing trends over the time period. Specifically, applications of the newly established neonicotinoids Chlothianidin, Imidacloprid and Thiamethoxam, increased annually by 1329 kg, 686 kg, 795 kg, respectively. Also, the use of Chlorpyrifos, which was well-established in the state by 2001 and is highly toxic to honey bees, increased by ~8,800 kg annually from 6,500 kg in 2001 to 115,000 kg in 2014 on corn, soybeans and wheat. We further evaluated the relative quality changes of natural/semi-natural land covers surrounding apiaries in 2006, 2010 and 2014, a period of significant increases in cropland area. In areas surrounding apiaries, we observed changes in multiple indices of forage quality that reflect the deteriorating landscape surrounding registered apiary sites due to land-use change and pesticide-use increases. Overall, our results suggest that the application of foliar-applied insecticides, including pyrethroids and one organophosphate, increased surrounding apiaries when the use of neonicotinoid seed treatments surged and the area for producing corn and soybeans expanded. Spatially, these threats were most pronounced in southeastern North Dakota, a region hosting a high density of apiary sites that has recently experienced corn and soybean expansion. Our results highlight the value of natural and semi-natural land covers as sources of pollinator forage and refugia for bees against pesticide exposure. Our study provides insights for targeting conservation efforts to improve forage quality benefiting managed pollinators.

Chinese metropolitan areas have been experiencing urbanization over the past decades, impacting biodiversity, carbon emissions, urban heat islands, and food security. Yet, systematic research on spatio-temporal urbanization patterns and drivers along the urban–rural gradient is rarely reported for northwest China. Here, we use land-use data from 1980 to 2015 to explore land-use change, urbanization intensity, and drivers in northwest China. Our results display direct and indirect effects of urban expansion on farmland loss, but also spatio-temporal heterogeneity in the urbanization patterns. While the earlier years were dominated by infill and land conversion close to city centers, the later years displayed sprawling urbanization following the constraints of terrain and administrative boundaries at the cost of farmland. Our regression analysis of spatial variables found a strong relationship with urban planning factors. The spatial analysis of urbanization patterns revealed indirect land-use change on former farmland. Furthermore, we found that regional geography and historic sites considerably influenced land conversion. Overall, our findings indicate the need for sustainable planning strategies that synthesize approaches to farmland and historic site protection and consideration of regionally specific landscape characteristics.

This study aims to visualize the effect of land use change using Maximum Spanning Tree with correlation weight between variables. In addition to know the most dominant factors affect the dependent variable. Based on data of land conversion of regency in South Sulawesi on year 2014, it is found that the percentage of villages experiencing the change of non-sawah land into rice field is the dominant factor. The percentage of districts / municipalities that have villages experiencing non-sawah land conversion to rice fields of 16.77 is expected to be reduced to 8.33%.

Abstrak Canggu adalah sebuah desa yang terletak di kabupaten Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung sebagai Daerah Pengembangan Badung Tengah yang memiliki kebijakan mempertahankan Badung Tengah sebagai daerah pertanian dalam arti luas dan mencegah konversi sawah. Pertanyaan penelitian dari penelitian ini adalah tentang dampak pariwisata terhadap konversi lahan. Pemilihan desa Canggu sebagai lokasi penelitian karena desa Canggu berada di tengah-tengah wilayah Badung sebagai daerah pertanian, alam dan budaya sebagai semangat pariwisata desa Canggu, desa Canggu dipengaruhi oleh pembangunan fasilitas akomodasi. Jenis data dalam penelitian ini adalah sumber data kualitatif dan kuantitatif dari data primer dan sekunder. Data penelitian ini dikumpulkan melalui wawancara dan studi kepustakaan. Penentuan informan penelitian ini dimulai dengan menentukan informan pertama dan informan kunci. Teknik analisis data penelitian ini adalah analisis deskriptif kualitatif. Menurut hasil penelitian di desa Canggu didapat hasil sebagai berikut pengembangan pariwisata berdampak pada peningkatan konversi lahan pertanian, perubahan penggunaan lahan juga berdampak pada perubahan sosiokultural. Adapun lokasi penelitian ditentukan berdasarkan perkembangan pariwisata terhadap alih fungui lahan, hasil dari penelitian ini perkembangan pariwisata terhadap alih fungsi lahan berdampak pada kesejahtraan masyarakat Desa Canggu. Lahan yang dialih fungsikan dibangun Hotel, Homestay, Villa, Restoran, Laundry dan lain sebagainya yang menunjang ketertarikan wistawan, untuk berwisata ke Desa Canggu.  Alih fungsi lahan merupakan suatu tolok ukur untuk meningkatkan pendapatan ekonomi warga Desa canggu. Hal ini menyebabkan minat masyarakat menjadi meningkat untuk mengubah fungsi lahan mereka sebagai media penghubung perkembangan pariwisata tersebut. Faktor lain yang menyebabkan perubahan alih fungsi lahan di Desa Canggu adalah tingginya nilai permintaan dari wisatawan terhadap vasilitas yang disediakan. Kata kunci: Pariwisata dan alih fungsi lahan   Abstract Canggu is a village located in North Kuta district, Badung Regency as the Central Badung Development Area which has a policy of maintaining Central Badung as an agricultural area in the broad sense and conversion of rice fields. The research question of this research is about research on land conversion. The selection of the Canggu village as a research location is because the Canggu village is in the middle of the Badung area as an agricultural, natural and cultural area such as the spirit of tourism in the Canggu village, the Canggu village works with the construction of recreational facilities. The type of data in this study is the source of qualitative and quantitative data from primary and secondary data. Research data were collected through interviews and library research. The determination of the informants of this study begins with determining the first informant and key informant. The data analysis technique of this research is descriptive qualitative analysis. According to the results of research in the village of Canggu obtained the following results the development of tourism has an impact on increasing agricultural land conversion, land use changes also have an impact on sociocultural change. The research location is determined based on the development of tourism on land use change, the results of this study the development of tourism on land use change has an impact on the welfare of the people of Canggu Village. The land that has been converted has been built by hotels, homestays, villas, restaurants, laundry and others that support the interests of tourists, for a trip to Canggu Village. Transfer of land functions is a benchmark to increase the economic income of residents of Canggu Village. This causes the interest of the community to increase to change the function of their land as a media liaison with the development of tourism. Another factor causing changes in land use change in Canggu Village is the high value of requests from tourists for the facilities provided. Keywords: Tourism and land use change

SUMMARYConservation managers and policy makers require models that can rank the impacts of multiple, interacting threats on biodiversity so that actions can be prioritized. An integrated modelling framework was used to predict the viability of plant populations for five species in southern California's Mediterranean-type ecosystem. The framework integrates forecasts of land-use change from an urban growth model with projections of future climatically-suitable habitat from climate and species distribution models, which are linked to a stochastic population model. The population model incorporates the effects of disturbance regimes and management actions on population viability. This framework: (1) ranks threats by their relative and cumulative impacts on population viability, such as land-use change, climate change, altered disturbance regimes or invasive species, and (2) ranks management responses in terms of their effectiveness for land protection, assisted dispersal, fire management and invasive species control. Too-frequent fire was often the top threat for the species studied, thus fire reduction was ranked the most important management option. Projected changes in suitable habitat as a result of climate change were generally large, but varied across species and climate scenarios; urban development could exacerbate loss of suitable habitat.
