During the 1996 annual meeting of the Business History Conference, a session on the World Wide Web attracted considerable attention from curious members (see Business and Economic History 25 [Fall 1996]: 46—54). The Internet was then somewhat of an infant, and most of us, just becoming accustomed to the speed and convenience of electronic mail, were barely aware of the opportunities afforded by the then-new graphical interface known as the Web. No more! At least not in the United States, where advertisers bombard us with their Internet addresses and news accounts inform us of vast fortunes made in new Internet ventures that have not yet turned a profit. There is, in short, a “dot.com” revolution occurring in American business. It is also happening, albeit more slowly, in scholarly and educational circles.

The potential for the Internet and e-commerce in China and Chinese-speaking nations (including Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore) is huge. Many experts believe that China will have the second largest population of web surfers, after the United States, by the year 2005 (McCarthy, 2000). Currently, the Internet population in China is doubling every six months (CNNIC, 2001). There are many issues relating to China’s cultural aspects and society, which can impact the design and content of web sites that are directed towards Chinese audiences. Some of these issues include basic differences between Chinese and American/Western cultures, family and collective orientations, religion and faith, color, symbolism, ordering and risk/uncertainty. Attention is given to the differences between the cultures of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore, as well as addressing issues brought up by related theories and frameworks. A discussion of important considerations that relate to using Chinese language on the World Wide Web (WWW) is also included. Finally, insights are gained by examining web sites produced in China and Chinese-speaking countries. This chapter will focus on many of these issues and provide practical guidelines and advice for those who want to reach out to Chinese audiences, whether for e-commerce, education, or other needs.

The year 2019 saw the emergence of COVID-19, an infectious disease spread through human-to-human transmission. This resulted in the immediate worldwide suspension of contact classes as countries tried to contain the wide spread of the pandemic. Consequently, educational institutions were thus left with only one option: e-learning. E-learning is the delivery of learning experiences through the use of electronic mail, the internet, the world wide web, and it can either be synchronous or asynchronous. Through the translanguaging lens, this chapter reports on a qualitative study that sought to explore the crucial role language plays in the e-learning of multilingual science students at a secondary school in South Africa. The e-learning lessons were in the form of videos, multilingual glossaries, and narrated slides in English and isiZulu languages. Data was collected through lesson observations and interviews held via Microsoft Teams. This chapter suggests numerous cognitive and socio-cultural benefits of multilingual e-learning pedagogy and recommends its use in education.

The ubiquitous nature of the World Wide Web (commonly known as the Web) is dramatically revolutionizing the manner in which organizations and individuals alike acquire and distribute information. Recent reports from the International Data Group indicate that the number of people on the Internet will reach 320 million by the year 2002 (Needle, 1999). Studies also indicate that in the United States alone, Web commerce will account for approximately $325 billion by the year 2002.

The Internet is a set of rules for computer communications that has created easy access to electronic mail, electronic mailing lists, and the World Wide Web. The "pediatric Internet" consists of a growing collection of Internet resources that deal specifically with the health care of the young. Locating this information, judging its quality, and determining its appropriate use presents difficulties, but the ubiquity of the Internet makes it imperative for child health professionals to learn the skills necessary to access and provide information via this medium. The Internet will be used increasingly for scientific publishing, the original purpose of the World Wide Web. This article presents basic definitions for the Internet, some characteristics of the pediatric Internet, guidance on how to locate information, and what the future of the pediatric Internet holds.

And in the beginning, there was e-mail! At least, that may be the perception of the millions of people who use electronic mail (“e-mail”) every day. In fact, the pervasiveness of the Internet in general, and the World Wide Web and e-mail in particular, has made it difficult for many people to remember the world before these technologies changed the face of communications forever. But it was only a decade ago that e-mail was a novelty outside of academic and scientific settings, the Web was not yet viable as a commercial mechanism, and the promise and exuberance surrounding the developing technologies masked the dangers of the road that would lie ahead.

The development of the Internet has a relatively brief and well-documented history (Cerf, 2001; Griffiths, 2001; Leiner et al., 2000; Tyson, 2002). The initial concept was first mooted in the early 1960s. American computer specialists visualized the creation of a globally interconnected set of computers through which everyone quickly could access data and programs from any node, or place, in the world. In the early 1970s, a research project initiated by the United States Department of Defense investigated techniques and technologies to interlink packet networks of various kinds. This was called the Internetting project, and the system of connected networks that emerged from the project was known as the Internet. The initial networks created were purpose-built (i.e., they were intended for and largely restricted to closed specialist communities of research scholars). However, other scholars, other government departments, and the commercial sector realized the system of protocols developed during this research (Transmission Control Protocol [TCP] and Internet Protocol [IP], collectively known as the TCP/IP Protocol Suite) had the potential to revolutionize data and program sharing in all parts of the community. A flurry of activity, beginning with the National Science Foundation (NSF) network NSFNET in 1986, over the last two decades of the 20th century created the Internet as we know it today. In essence, the Internet is a collection of computers joined together with cables and connectors following standard communication protocols.

The Internet has made available a big number of information services, such as file sharing, electronic mail, online chat, telephony and file transfer. However, services that provide effective access to Web pages, such as Google, are the ones that most contributed to the popularization and success of the World Wide Web and the Internet. Pages published at the World Wide Web belong to many different topic areas, such as music, fishing, travel, etc. Some organizations have tried to organize pages in a predefined classification, and have manually built large directories of topics (e.g. Dmoz or the Yahoo! directory). But given the huge size and the dynamic nature of the Web, keeping track of pages and their topic manually is a daunting task. There is also the problem of agreeing on a standard classification, and this has proved to be a formidable problem, as different individuals and organizations tend to classify things differently. Another option is to rely on automatic tools that mine the Web for “topics” or “concepts” related to online documents. This approach is indeed more scalable than the manual one. However, automatically classifying documents in topics is a major research challenge. This is because the document keywords alone seem to be insufficient to directly convey the meaning of the document to an autonomous system. In some cases, the main difficulty is due to the ambiguity of the terms encountered in the document. Even if the ambiguity problems were solved there is still no guarantee that the vocabulary used to describe the document will match that used by the autonomous system to guide its search. Central to automatic approaches is the notion of “semantic context”, which loosely means the subject or topic where a task like searching is embedded. Of course, we need a way to computationally represent this notion of context, and one possibility is to see context as a collection of interrelated terms in the sense that they appear together in a number of related pages (Ramirez & Brena, 2006). For instance, the word “Java” appears together with “roasted” when talking about coffee, but appears more frequently with “code” when talking about a programming language. Semantic contexts allow performing searches on the Web at the concept level, rather than at the more basic keyword level. In this chapter we present recent advances in automated approaches in web concept mining, emphasizing our own work about mining the Web for semantic contexts.

This article introduces the podiatric physician interested in pediatrics to the resources available on the Internet. It surveys search engines, gateway sites on the World Wide Web leading to a wealth of pediatric information and services, and features such as electronic mail, news-groups, and Gopher sites. Examples illustrate how such resources can be helpful to the practicing podiatrist.
