Applicability of Reichardt's Hypothesis to the Prediction of Velocity Field of Multiple Parallel Plane Jets

AbstractIn this paper the velocity distribution for multiple parallel plane jets based on the superposition of Reichardt's solution for single free jet is derived. The extend of the applicability of Reichardt's hypothesis to prediction of multiple parallel plane jets is examined. Both ventilated and unventilated two parallel plane jets data published in the literature and obtained for this study were used for comparisons with the theoretical results obtained from Reichardt's hypothesis. LDA measurements of mean streamwise velocities and turbulence characteristics of an array of 5 parallel plane jets were also made in order to establish the conditions under which this heuristic approach is valid. Results show that provided the pressure gradient in the lateral direction is small and hence the deflection of the individual jet center line is small, there is a good agreement between experimental results and predictions based on Reichardt's hypothesis for multiple parallel plane jets.

The calculations of the velocity and temperature distributions for the turbulent flow in axially symmetrical and plane jets are described.For axially symmetrical jets Tollmien's results derived from calculations based on the momentum theory are stated; the calculations on the basis of the modified vorticity transfer theory and on the vorticity transfer theory with symmetrical turbulence are carried out. Unfortunately it seems to be true that none of these theories provides results in good agreement with experiment for both the velocity and temperature distributions.For plane jets the results obtained by Tollmien and based on the momentum transfer theory are stated; the calculations on the basis of the vorticity transfer theory are carried out. The velocity distributions on both theories are identical and in fair agreement with experiment. In order to test the validity of the theories it is necessary to compare the theoretical results for the temperature with experiment. No results for the latter seem to have been published.

The nonlinear optical properties of pepper oil are studied by diffraction ring patterns and Z-scan techniques with continuous wave beam from solid state laser at 473 nm wavelength. The nonlinear refractive index of the sample is calculated by both techniques. The sample show high nonlinear refractive index. Based on Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction integral, the far-field intensity distributions of ring patterns have been calculated. It is found that the experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical results. Also the optical limiting property of pepper oil is reported. The results obtained in this study prove that the pepper oil has applications in nonlinear optical devices.

Eddic poetry constitutes one of the most important genres in Old Norse or Scandinavian literature and has been studied since the earliest time of modern-day philology. The progress we have made in that field is impressive, considering the many excellent editions and translations, not to mention the countless critical studies in monographs and articles. Nevertheless, there is always a great need to revisit, to summarize, to review, and to digest the knowledge gained so far. The present handbook intends to address all those goals and does so, to spell it out right away, exceedingly well. But in contrast to traditional concepts, the individual contributions constitute fully developed critical article, each with a specialized topic elucidating it as comprehensively as possible, and concluding with a section of notes. Those are kept very brief, but the volume rounds it all off with an inclusive, comprehensive bibliography. And there is also a very useful index at the end. At the beginning, we find, following the table of contents, a list of the contributors, unfortunately without emails, a list of translations and abbreviations of the titles of Eddic poems in the Codex Regius and then elsewhere, and a very insightful and pleasant introduction by Carolyne Larrington. She briefly introduces the genre and then summarizes the essential points made by the individual authors. The entire volume is based on the Eddic Network established by the three editors in 2012, and on two workshops held at St. John’s College, Oxford in 2013 and 2014.

The progress made in dentistry during the latest decades is due, conceptually, to the new, systemic vision of man, which has also taken place in this field of medicine. In this context, the link between organic and psychic is indestructible. Thus illness is understood as a drama in which the somatic process has a psychic value, and the mental one has a body value. It is known that the morphological and functional integrity of the dental system, health and vigorousness, gives the individual a state of well-being that affects his somatic and psychic health, as any disturbance at this level entails repercussions in psychological and social behavior. Such a disruption is the total edification that seriously alters not only the dental system but the whole organism, putting various biological and psychosocial problems to the practitioner. The total expression represents not only a physical disability but also a psychological one. A special importance in studying psychological changes at total edentulous presents the psychological aspects of senile involution. This is not only a theoretical but also a practical importance due to the increase in the number of elderly people. Through the researches of the present paper we intend to present the reality of the psychological manifestations in the total edentation, which is objectified on different methods of psychodiagnosis in the first part, in order for the second part to be addressed to problems of prosthetic psychotherapy.The study comprises a group of 43 patients, of whom 24 were men and 19 women with total uni or bimaxilar edentation. Total edentation can be and is responsible for somatopsychic alterations, along with other pathogens, general, local, social, which sometimes can take a dramatic form, converting, where the area is also favorable, a pure somatic disease, for those who are not in psychopathy or even psychosis, although these latter cases are extremely rare and especially in youngsters, which would disrupt not only the person�s behavior as an individual, but also their status, function and social integrity. The treatment of dental and psychological complex is mandatory for any patient, but especially for the elderly, where recovery is more difficult, with disease-specific disorders adding to those of senescence.

Abstract The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) parameters (g factor g i , and hyperfine structure constants A i , with i = x, y, z) and local structures for Cu2+ centers in M2Zn(SO4)2·6H2O (M = NH4 and Rb) are theoretically investigated using the high order perturbation formulas of these EPR parameters for a 3d 9 ion under orthorhombically elongated octahedra. In the calculations, contribution to these EPR parameters due to the admixture of d-orbitals in the ground state wave function of the Cu2+ ion are taken into account based on the cluster approach, and the required crystal-field parameters are estimated from the superposition model which enables correlation of the crystal-field parameters and hence the studied EPR parameters with the local structures of the Cu2+ centers. Based on the calculations, the Cu–H2O bonds are found to suffer the axial elongation ratio δ of about 3 and 2.9% along the z-axis, meanwhile, the planar bond lengths may experience variation ratio τ (≈3.8 and 1%) along x- and y-axis for Cu2+ center in (NH4)2Zn(SO4)2·6H2O and Rb2Zn(SO4)2·6H2O, respectively. The theoretical results show good agreement with the observed values.

In this paper, we overview the recent progress we made in the magnetron sputtering-based developments of nano-sculpted thin films intended for energy-related applications such as energy conversion. This paper summarizes our recent experimental work often supported by simulation and theoretical results. Specifically, the development of a new generation of nano-sculpted photo-anodes based on TiO2 for application in dye-sensitized solar cells is discussed.

The flow field in an inertial impactor was studied experimentally with a water model by means of a flow visualization technique. The influence of such parameters as Reynolds number and jet-to-plate distance on the flow field was determined. The Navier-Stokes equations describing the laminar flow field in the impactor were solved numerically by means of a finite difference relaxation method. The theoretical results were found to be in good agreement with the empirical observations made with the water model.

The aim of the research described in this paper, is to make a virtual thermal manikin that would be simple, but also robust and reliable. The virtual thermal manikin was made in order to investigate thermal conditions inside vehicle cabins. The main parameters of the presented numerical model that were investigated in this paper are mesh characteristics and turbulence models. Heat fluxes on the manikin's body segments obtained from the simulations were compared with published results, from three different experiments done on physical thermal manikins. The presented virtual thermal manikin, meshed with surface elements of 0.035 m in nominal size (around 13,600 surface elements) and in conjunction with the two-layer RANS Realizable k-? turbulence model, had generally good agreement with experimental data in both forced and natural flow conditions.

According to several known experiments, an increase of the incoming flow air content can increase the hydrofoil lift coefficient. The presented theoretical study shows that such increase is associated with the decrease of the fluid density at the cavity surface. This decrease is caused by entrainment of air bubbles to the cavity from the surrounding flow. The theoretical results based on such explanation are in a good agreement with the earlier published experimental data for NACA0015.

Measurements of mean velocity, turbulent stress and static pressure were made in the mixing region of a jet of air issuing from a slot nozzle into still air. The velocity was low and the two-dimensional flow was effectively incompressible. The results are examined in terms of the unsimplified equations of fluid motion, and comparisons are drawn with the common assumptions and simplifications of free jet theory. Appreciable deviations from isobaric conditions exist and the deviations are closely related to the local turbulent stresses. Negative static pressures were encountered everywhere in the mixing field except in the potential wedge region immediately adjacent to the nozzle. Lateral profiles of mean longitudinal velocity conformed closely to an error curve at all stations further than 7 slot widths from the nozzle mouth. An asymptotic approach to complete self-preservation of the flow was observed.
