Sensational Interests, Mating Effort, and Personality: Evidence for Cross-Cultural Validity

Abstract. We assessed whether violent or macabre interests (“sensational interests”) were related to mating effort and a higher-order personality construct reflecting the combined features of higher Extraversion, lower Psychoticism, and lower Neuroticism in 1321 participants from English-speaking (Tucson, Arizona, and Glasgow, Scotland) and Spanish-speaking (Hermosillo, Mexico, and Talca, Chile) communities. Participants from Spanish-speaking communities generally had more sensational interests. Mating effort was positively related to sensational interests, though the relationship was slightly weaker in Spanish-speaking communities. Personality effects were modest and entirely moderated by language; personality was negatively related to sensational interests in English-speaking communities, but positively associated to sensational interests in Spanish-speaking communities. These findings suggest that the relationship between mating effort and sensational interests is universal and reflects general intrasexual competition, whereas the relationship between personality and sensational interests is more culture-specific.

Abstract Objectives The Study Participant Feedback Questionnaire (SPFQ) is a patient-completed tool designed to assess patient experiences and satisfaction with aspects associated with being involved in a clinical trial. Originally developed in oncology and among English-speaking participants, the aim of the current study was to evaluate the content and cross-cultural validity of the SPFQ in other indications and non-English-speaking countries. Methods Semi-structured qualitative telephone interviews were conducted with 80 participants across eight non-English-speaking countries (in Europe, South America and Asia) who had received an investigational medicinal product as part of a clinical trial in the past three years. Interviews comprised concept elicitation to identify concepts of importance to participants’ trial experiences, and cognitive debriefing to assess understanding and perceived importance of SPFQ instructions, items and response options. Results Concept elicitation findings supported the content validity of the SPFQ. During cognitive debriefing, SPFQ instructions and the majority of items were well understood by participants. Participants generally considered the SPFQ items important to their clinical trial experience, albeit a handful of items assessed concepts that had not been experienced by trial participants or were redundant with other SPFQ items. The instructions, response options and recall period of the SPFQ were generally well understood. No country-level differences in understanding or importance were apparent. Conclusion Study findings provide evidence for the content and cross-cultural validity of the SPFQ and support implementation of the SPFQ as a means of obtaining participant feedback across global development programmes in a variety of indications.

The purpose of the present study was to test the cross-cultural validity of the relationship found in Western samples between birth order and college attendance, volunteering behavior, and level of academic achievement. Information concerning birth order and family size was obtained on three sub-samples: (a) 200 freshman Arab students, (b) 97 Arab undergraduates, and (c) 45 Arab undergraduates placed on the Dean's Honor List. Ss in samples (b) and (c) were asked whether they would volunteer to participate in small group experiments or not. In general, the results obtained in this study do not corroborate previous findings on birth order. Thus, firstborns were not found to attend college in greater numbers than later borns. Furthermore, firstborns were not found to volunteer for small group experiments in greater numbers than later borns, nor was there any significant relationship found between birth order and level of academic achievement.

Abstract The Young Adult Burn Outcome Questionnaire (YABOQ) is a validated, English-language patient-reported outcome assessment of young adults’ recovery from burn injury across 15 scale domains. We evaluated the cross-cultural validity of a newly developed Spanish version of the YABOQ. Secondary data from English- and Spanish-speaking burn survivors (17 to 30 years of age) were obtained from the Multicenter Benchmarking Study. We conducted classic psychometric analyses and evaluated the measurement equivalence of the English and Spanish YABOQs in logistic and ordinal logistic regression differential item functioning analyses. All multi-item scales in the Spanish YABOQ demonstrated adequate reliability except the Pain and Itch scales. One item in the Perceived Appearance scale showed differential item functioning across English- and Spanish-speaking burn survivors, but the observed differential item functioning had no clinically significant impact on scale-level Perceived Appearance scores. Our findings support the cross-cultural validity of the YABOQ Physical Function, Perceived Appearance, Sexual Function, Emotion, Family Function, Family Concern, Satisfaction with Symptom Relief, Satisfaction with Role, Work Reintegration and Religion scales among English- and Spanish-speaking young adult burn survivors. This work supports the use of these English and Spanish YABOQ scales to assess the effect of therapeutic interventions on young adults’ burn outcomes in pooled analyses and to assess disparities in young adults’ burn outcomes across language groups.

AbstractResiliency personality factors are supposed to underlie resilience. To get evidence on this supposition, the Prince-Embury scales (PES) for adolescents were adapted to the Spanish population. Then, the relationship between theresiliencyvariablessense of mastery,sense of relatednessandemotional reactivity-assessed with the PES- withresilience-assessed with theSubjective Resilience Questionnaire(SRQ)- were analyzed, as well as the role of social integration within this relationship. Data from 1083 adolescents were analyzed using confirmatory techniques (CFA, PALV). CFA of PES displayed a good fit to the model (CFI: .95). Path-analysis showed thatsense of masteryandemotional reactivitypredict resilience as expected, but also that, contrary to expectations based on Prince-Embury’s theory, sense of relatedness and resilience are not related, either directly, or through social integration. Being related and socially integrated probably favors well-being, but it may not favor resilience unless associated to Sense of Mastery, at least in adolescence.

The purpose of the present study was to test the cross-cultural validity of the relationship found in Western samples between birth order and age at marriage. Data on birth order and actual age at marriage were obtained through individual interviews with 84 Arab Moslem wives in Damascus, while data on birth order and ideal best-marriage-ages were obtained from a sample of 142 undergraduate Arab students at the American University of Beirut, consisting of 74 Christians and 68 Moslems. In general, the results showed no significant differences in mean actual ages at marriage between firstborn and later born wives or husbands. Furthermore, regardless of sex, no significant differences were found between firstborn and later born ideal best-marriage-ages. These findings throw doubt on the relationship found previously between birth order and age at marriage.

Abstract Objective To provide further convergent validity on the Personal Impact of Epilepsy Scale (PIES) Spanish version for use in Hispanics with epilepsy. Participants and Method This study included 90 patients (22 Hispanic and Spanish speaking - HSS, 30 Hispanic and English speaking – HES, and 38 non-Hispanic and English speaking – NHES) who were diagnosed with epilepsy and referred by their epileptologist for a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation that, in addition to cognitive measures, also included the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and PIES in English or Spanish- depending on the participant’s primary language. The PIES was created with subscales to measure the effect of seizures, adverse effects of treatment, and comorbidities such as mood disorders on quality of life. We compared scores on the PIES subscales in English and Spanish to determine equivalence. We further examined if language of administration moderated the relationship between PIES subscale scores and depression/anxiety through nonparametric bootstrapping. Results There were no significant demographic or clinical differences between the 3 groups examined. ANOVA contrast of mean scores on all PIES subscales between HSS, HES and NHES groups did not reach significance (Seizures F [2,88] = .06 , p = -.93; Medication use F[2,88] = 1.95, p = .14, Comorbidity F[2,88] = .64, p = .52, and total PIES F[2,88] = .19, p = .83). The relationships between PIES and BDI-II/BAI scores were not significantly moderated by language of administration. Conclusions Our data suggest clinical equivalency between the English and Spanish versions of the PIES. Furthermore, the relationships between PIES subscales and the BDI-II/BAI were not significantly changed by language of administration. These findings indicate that the Spanish PIES appears to have good convergent validity with the original English version and can be useful in the assessment of quality of life in HSS patients.

AbstractMontrealers are often categorized into three distinct groups: Anglophones, Francophones, and Allophones. However, within these groups there are individuals whose trajectories are complex, as reflected, for example, in their linguistic practices. Our interest lies in the relationship between these complex practices and the ethnolin-guistic attributions of the speakers. We concentrate on two groups of Francophones: those from Spanish-speaking families who have been in Quebec for one or two generations and those from Francophone families who have frequent English-speaking contacts. After summarizing the results of a perception test, in which Francophones from Quebec were asked to identify the ethnolinguistic affiliation of speakers of various origins based on short clips of their French, we analyze the usage of sociopho-netic variables reflecting the influence of French, Spanish, or English. The analysis indicates that phonetic variation stems from speakers’ sociosymbolic orientation, as well as certain other sociodemographic factors linked to identity construction as it relates to ethnicity.

Abstract Objective As the U.S. Spanish-speaking population grows, neuropsychologists provide assessment services to an increasingly diverse group of individuals. In response to the need for a centralized resource, NeuroShare, a no-cost website that collects and organizes cross-cultural neuropsychological normative data was created. The purpose of this study was to gather information on the current practices of cross-cultural neuropsychology, the utility of NeuroShare, and potential improvements that could be made to the platform. Participants and Method An anonymous survey was distributed to neuropsychologists and trainees through national and regional professional listservs. Participants’ demographics, clinical experience, and current practices (e.g. use of language specific normative data, assessment of acculturation/bilingualism) when providing neuropsychological services to Spanish-speaking populations were collected. The survey examined feedback on the NeuroShare database. Results 60 participants completed the survey, and they were primarily White/ Caucasian (62%), along with Hispanic/ Latino (36%), Black/African American (1%), and biracial/multiracial (1%). About 66% reported that they often search for Spanish language normative data depending on the patient’s demographics. 70% of respondents reported administering tests developed primarily for English-speaking populations, that are then adapted, when testing Spanish-speaking individuals. Some recommendations for improving Neuroshare included the incorporation of pediatric normative data and a normative data calculator tool. Conclusions This study highlights the needs and benefits of a comprehensive, easy to use system in collecting and organizing normative information for diverse populations. NeuroShare serves as a tool to facilitate the practice of cross-cultural neuropsychology, as well as a catalyst to improve neuropsychological services through the provision of improved access to appropriate normative measures for use with diverse populations.

Purpose: There is a paucity of information detailing the phonological skills of Spanish-English bilingual children and comparing that information to information concerning the phonological skills of predominantly English-speaking (PE) and predominantly Spanish-speaking (PS) children. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between amount of output (i.e., percentage of time each language was spoken) in each language and phonological skills in Spanish-English bilingual children and PE and PS children. Method: Fifteen typically developing children, ranging in age from 5;0 (years;months) to 5;5 (mean=5;2), participated in the study. The participants consisted of 5 PE speakers, 5 PS speakers, and 5 bilingual (Spanish-English) speakers. A single-word assessment was used to gather information on phonological skills (consonant accuracy, type and frequency of substitutions, frequency of occurrence of phonological patterns [e.g., cluster reduction], accuracy of syllable types [e.g., CV, CVC, CCV, etc.]), and type and rate of cross-linguistic effects. Results: The results indicated that there was no significant correlation between amount of output in each language and phonological skills either in the Spanish skills of PS children and Spanish-English bilingual speakers or in the English skills of PE children and Spanish-English bilingual speakers. In addition, there was no significant difference in segmental accuracy, syllabic accuracy, or percentage of occurrence of phonological patterns between either the Spanish skills of PS children and Spanish-English bilingual speakers or the English skills of PE children and Spanish-English bilingual speakers. Finally, the children showed a limited number of cross-linguistic effects. Clinical Implications: Results from this study indicate no link between parent estimates of language output and phonological skill and demonstrate that Spanish-English bilingual children will have commensurate, although not identical, phonological skills as compared to age-matched PS and PE children.
