Objectives: Using the lens of the virtual workplace model, the current basic qualitative study examined how COVID-19 self-isolation affected both online and land-based faculty (working online as an emergency due to COVID-19) workspaces and work processes. Method: A total of 20 online and six land-based faculty completed e-mail interviews both one month and 3 months post self-isolation. Results: Online faculty were more satisfied with their home workplace, but both groups felt more negative about their online work, as they felt a loss of freedom and independence due to the isolation. Conclusions: Findings indicated that both land-based and online faculty showed indications of stress due to self-isolation, which in turn affected their feelings about work. Gaining a sense of control seems to be essential to reducing stress over time. Implication for theory and/or practice: Future researchers may wish to examine the relationship of feelings of employee burnout to the stress of the pandemic. How working from home interacts with burnout is not yet known, particularly for online faculty. Both employers and virtual workers may wish to utilize the study’s findings in recognizing a need for control in virtual workers.

Triggering factors of sensitive skin are supposed to be physical, chemical (cosmetics, water, and pollutants), and occasionally psychological (stress). A recent meta-analysis showed that the most important triggering factor declared by subjects is the use of cosmetics. This study was designed to compare the consumption of cosmetic products in women with sensitive skin and controls. After a dermatological examination, women between the ages of 18 and 65 years with or without sensitive skin were recruited. They completed different questionnaires about the presence of sensitive skin and use of 28 cosmetics that could be applied on the face. The amount per application was recorded for all products used at least once a week on the face. In total, 160 women were included, with a mean age of 41 ± 13 years. Two groups of 40 women were created based on the sensitive scale (SS-10 score), with the lowest SS-10 scores (nonsensitive skin group) and the highest SS-10 score (sensitive skin group). The number of products used daily was similar in the 2 groups. Women with sensitive skin were significantly more frequent users of liquid soap/soap-free gel cleansers than those without sensitive skin (70 vs. 43%). There was no difference concerning the frequency of use of products in the 2 groups. Concerning the amount of product used by application, women with sensitive skin used twice as much cream per application compared with the women without sensitive skin: 511 ± 438 μg versus 290 ± 203 μg (<i>p</i> = 0.039). Concerning the composition of the cosmetic products used, the only difference concerned phenoxyethanol, which was more often present in the moisturizer of women without sensitive skin (66.7%) than in those with sensitive skin (32.4%) (<i>p</i> = 0.007). Women with sensitive skin were more likely to buy products recommended for sensitive skin by manufacturers. The relationship of causality between the use of cosmetics and sensitive skin cannot be established. Women with sensitive skin used different cosmetic products than women without sensitive skin. Women with sensitive skin used a higher amount of moisturizer, used products recommended for sensitive skin, and bought more cosmetic products at pharmacies than supermarkets. We hypothesized that subjects with sensitive skin are looking for products that improve the sensation of skin sensitivity.

ABSTRACT Objective: to understand the relationship of social determinants in health promotion for women living in a quilombola community, through Paulo Freire's Research Itinerary. Method: a qualitative study, with a participatory character, developed through Paulo Freire's Research Itinerary. Ten quilombola women aged between 24 and 54 years, living in the Morro do Fortunato Community, Garopaba, Brazil, participated in the study from April to June 2016. During the three-month-period, the thematic research, codification, decoding and critical unveiling were performed. Results: 20 generating themes were initially investigated which were coded and decoded in eight and unveiled in two significant themes, quilombola women and access, which, when unveiled, deepened the empowerment and the relationship with health promotion in this community. Conclusion: this study enabled women to be aware of their realities and consequent empowerment and fruitful reflections which provided an increase in self-esteem, appreciation and self-care, as well as the perception of their strengths, often muted by the adversities of the day to day.

Purpose. The research purpose was to study the relationship of metacognitive strategies with indicators of mental self-regulation of an athlete: regulatory and volitional processes. Research methods and organization. The type of study is an empirical psychological testing. Methods: “Metacognitive strategies in decision making in difficult situations” questionnaire, “Difficulties of self-regulation in sports-significant situations” questionnaire, “Scale of action control” questionnaire, "Style of self-regulation of behavior" questionnaire. Sample group: 134 qualified athletes (54 men and 80 women) aged 18-23 years, engaged in various sports. Research results. The frequency of applying theorizing and reflecting strategies by athletes (men and women) is connected with the characteristics of volitional regulation, and the frequency of controlling cognitive processes is connected with programming of activities. We found some differences in the relationship of metacognitive strategies with regulatory processes in male and female athletes. We determined that increasing effectiveness of metacognitive strategies reduces difficulties of mental self-regulation: it is easier for athletes to restrain negative emotions, become ambitious and more active. Growing effectiveness of a number of metacognitive strategies is connected with increasing awareness of athletes' self-regulation. Conclusion. The research revealed statistically significant connections of metacognitive strategies with regulatory and volitional processes of athletes. Increasing the frequency of use and effectiveness of metacognitive strategies can both improve and deteriorate athletes’ mental self-regulation. The research results can be used to develop recommendations for the individualization of metacognitive strategies, taking into account the gender of athletes and the goals of sports training.
