AbstractMicroscale lasers efficiently deliver coherent photons into small volumes for intracellular biosensors and all-photonic microprocessors. Such technologies have given rise to a compelling pursuit of ever-smaller and ever-more-efficient microlasers. Upconversion microlasers have great potential owing to their large anti-Stokes shifts but have lagged behind other microlasers due to their high pump power requirement for population inversion of multiphoton-excited states. Here, we demonstrate continuous-wave upconversion lasing at an ultralow lasing threshold (4.7 W cm−2) by adopting monolithic whispering-gallery-mode microspheres synthesized by laser-induced liquefaction of upconversion nanoparticles and subsequent rapid quenching (“liquid-quenching”). Liquid-quenching completely integrates upconversion nanoparticles to provide high pump-to-gain interaction with low intracavity losses for efficient lasing. Atomic-scale disorder in the liquid-quenched host matrix suppresses phonon-assisted energy back transfer to achieve efficient population inversion. Narrow laser lines were spectrally tuned by up to 3.56 nm by injection pump power and operation temperature adjustments. Our low-threshold, wavelength-tunable, and continuous-wave upconversion microlaser with a narrow linewidth represents the anti-Stokes-shift microlaser that is competitive against state-of-the-art Stokes-shift microlasers, which paves the way for high-resolution atomic spectroscopy, biomedical quantitative phase imaging, and high-speed optical communication via wavelength-division-multiplexing.

Raman scattering in air-covered and SiO2 -covered Silicon-on-insulator waveguides of 1.25 cm length, 220 nm height and two widths of 2 μm or 0.45 μm was investigated. A continuous wave (CW) Raman fiber laser at 1454.8 nm with linewidth of <0.1 nm was used as a pump source. The coupling efficiency was estimated to be around 10% for one end facet. Spontaneous Raman shift of 521 cm-1 (1574.2 THz) scattering was observed at 1573.8 nm for SOI waveguides in air and 1574.2 nm for waveguides covered with SiO2 at pump power of <1.5 mW inside both waveguides of 2 and 0.45 μm. Anti-Stokes scattering was observed at 1352.8 nm with pump power of 16 mW. The stimulated Raman gain was calculated from spontaneous Raman efficiency. Total Raman on-off gain was determined to be 0.6 dB for waveguide with width of 2 μm and 1 dB for waveguide with width of 0.45 μm.

This study reports a Q-switching-based, 2058-nm holmium (Ho) fiber laser incorporating a saturable absorber (SA) based on graphene oxide (GO). The SA was prepared with a side-polished fiber, while GO particles were deposited onto the fiber-polished surface to realize an all-fiber SA. A continuous-wave thulium-doped all-fiber laser, which was configured with a master-oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) structure, was constructed as a pumping source. By inserting the fabricated SA into an all-fiber ring resonator based on 1-m length of Ho-doped fiber, Q-switched pulses could readily be obtained at a wavelength of 2058 nm. The pulse width was observed to vary from 2.01 to 1.56 μs as the pump power was adjusted from ~759 to 1072 mW, while the repetition rate was tunable from 45.56 to 56.12 kHz. The maximum values of average optical power and pulse energy were measured as ~11.61 mW and 207.05 nJ, respectively, at a ~1072 mW pump power.

The aim of this paper is to present a possible experiment for measuring photon number by a non-demolitive scheme. We show that, in principle, it is possible to deduce the number of photons of an intense pump coherent field by measuring the phase-shift on two frequency conjugated beams due to the interaction with the pump in a nonlinear crystal, which exhibits χ(2) nonlinearity. We perform a theoretical evaluation of the relative uncertainty associated to the photon number measurement, obtaining high accuracy results when high pump power levels, low coupling between pump and crystal and squeezing generators are used. The accuracy obtained are compared with results obtainable with a beam splitter setup.

Abstract In this paper, design of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) based 16 channel wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) system for different pump powers and input signal levels using counter propagating pumping scheme is reported. Wavelength range between 1548 and 1560 nm in C-band with channel spacing of 0.75 nm at a bit rate of 10 Gbps are used. Input power given to all the channels is taken between −20 and −35 dBm with 3 dBm variation. Pump power levels between 100 and 500 mW at 980 nm wavelength are used. Low gain flatness with high gains and low noise figures are achieved with the proposed scheme.
