AbstractBrain cholesterol metabolism has been described as altered in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients. Serum lipid levels have been widely studied in PD with controversial results among different populations and age groups. The present study is aimed at determining if the serum lipid profile could be influenced by the genetic background of PD patients. We included 403 PD patients (342 sporadic PD patients, 30 GBA-associated PD patients, and 31 LRRK2-associated PD patients) and 654 healthy controls (HCs). Total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides were measured in peripheral blood. Analysis of covariance adjusting for sex and age (ANCOVA) and post hoc tests were applied to determine the differences within lipid profiles among the groups. Multivariate ANCOVA revealed significant differences among the groups within cholesterol and LDL levels. GBA-associated PD patients had significantly lower levels of total cholesterol and LDL compared to LRRK2-associated PD patients and HCs. The different serum cholesterol levels in GBA-associated PD might be related to diverse pathogenic mechanisms. Our results support the hypothesis of lipid metabolism disruption as one of the main PD pathogenic mechanisms in patients with GBA-associated PD. Further studies would be necessary to explore their clinical implications.

Data about lipoprotein changes and their link with cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis in systemic sclerosis (SSc) are still challenging. We aimed to evaluate serum lipid profile of patients with SSc and to identify potential relation with different disease specific characteristics (clinical, serological, inflammatory tests) in a cross-sectional study. Standard assessments comprised SSc-related parameters (disease subtype, clinical spectrum, immunological tests) and lipid metabolism (total cholesterol and fractions, triglycerides). Impaired lipid profile (low serum HDL- and high LDL-cholesterol, increased serum triglycerides, slightly modification in total cholesterol level) significantly correlated with diffuse SSc, activity (EUSTAR) and severity (MEDSGER), as well as seropositivity for specific antibodies (anti-centromere and anti-topoisomerase 1). The dyslipidemic profile might represent a pathobiological pathway for atherosclerosis in SSc.

AbstractThe association between dyslipidemia and cognitive performance in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients still needs to be clarified. Aim of the study was to evaluate the presence of possible associations between serum lipids fractions and executive dysfunction also exploring the sex-specific contribute of lipids level on cognition. Patients from the PACOS cohort, who underwent a complete serum lipid profile measures (total cholesterol-TC, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol-LDL, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol-HDL and triglycerides-TG) were selected. Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines of the National Cholesterol Education Program were used to classify normal/abnormal lipid fractions. Executive functioning was assessed with the Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB). Logistic regression was performed to assess associations between lipids fractions and FAB score. Correlations between lipids fractions and FAB score were explored. Sex-stratified analysis was performed. Three hundred and forty-eight PD patients (148 women; age 66.5 ± 9.5 years; disease duration 3.9 ± 4.9 years) were enrolled. Women presented significantly higher TC, LDL and HDL than men. In the whole sample, any association between lipid profile measures and FAB score was found. Among women, a positive association between hypertriglyceridemia and FAB score under cutoff was found (OR 3.4; 95%CI 1.29–9.03; p value 0.013). A statistically significant negative correlation was found between the FAB score and triglyceride serum levels (r = − 0.226; p value 0.005). Differently, among men, a statistically significant negative association between hypercholesterolemia and FAB score under cutoff (OR 0.4; 95%CI 0.17–0.84; p value 0.018) and between high LDL levels and FAB score under cutoff (OR 0.4; 95%CI 0.18–0.90; p value 0.027) were found. Our data suggest a sex-specific different role of lipids in executive functioning.

Background:Tamoxifen acts as a selective estrogen receptor modulator by binding to the estrogenreceptors on mammary epithelium andblockingtheproliferative action of estrogen on mammaryepithelium. In contrast to that it has a weak estrogen agonistic effect on bone, liver and endometrium.Tamoxifen therapy has favorable effects on serum lipid profile by decreasing serum levels of Total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein (LDL), while its effect on high density lipoprotein (HDL) and triglyceride (TG)is still controversial. So this study is to evaluate the effects of tamoxifenTherapy on fasting serum lipid profile in patients with breast cancer. Results: Mean age was 43.56±3.53yrs , most common BMI was 30-34.9. Patient serum TG levels were raised from baseline after 3 months of tamoxifen with p values of (0.000) which was statistically significant while HDL levels were raised but with p value of (0.008 ) which was statistically insignificant. Serum LDL and total cholesterol were reduced from baseline after 3 month with p value of (0.000) and (0.000) respectively. Conclusion: This study concludes that tamoxifen has effects on serum lipid profile by increasing TG levels and lowering TC and LDL levels so this should be in consideration while prescribing tamoxifen to the patients having other risk factors for cardiovascular abnormalities.

Objective Maternal malnutrition with disturbed lipid metabolism during pregnancy may affect the fetal lipid profile. We aimed to detect the relation between maternal and neonatal serum lipid profile, as well as to detect the serum lipid profile difference between small for gestational age (SGA) infants and appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infants to disclose the impact of maternal malnutrition on birth weight. Study Design A cross-sectional study was conducted on 150 pregnant women coming to the labor room. Before delivery, maternal serum levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), triglycerides (TGs), and total cholesterol were assessed, then after delivery, cord blood samples were taken for assessment of the neonatal lipid profile. Birth weights were measured, then the neonates were divided into SGA and AGA groups. Results Serum levels of LDL, TGs, and total cholesterol in the SGA infants were lower than that in the AGA infants. A positive correlation between maternal and neonatal serum TGs levels was found. Besides, there was a positive correlation between birth weight and maternal serum levels of LDL, TGs, and total cholesterol. Conclusion Maternal serum lipid profile could be an indicator of the neonatal serum lipid profile and birth weight. Key Points

A prospective study was conducted in the Northern region of Bangladesh, to investigate the serum lipid profile viz the level of total cholesterol (TC), Triglyceride (TG), HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol of hypertensive patients and compares them with levels of control subjects. The results revealed that serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol were significantly markedly raised (p>0.001) whereas the level of HDL-cholesterol was significantly lower (p>0.001) in hypertensive patients as compared to control subjects. No significant changes of serum lipid profile were found between male and female hypertensive patients, but in control subjects, markedly higher levels of serum lipid profile was observed in male compared to that of female. It was concluded that hypercholesterolaemia, hypertrigyceridaemia and low density lipoprotein are the main lipid abnormalities on the incidence of hypertension in the study area. Many epidemiological studies have regularly connected nuts intake with decreased risk for coronary heart disease. The primary mechanism by which nuts protect against cardiovascular disease is through the improvement of lipid and apolipoprotein profile. Therefore, numerous dietary intervention studies investigated the impact of nut consumption on blood lipid levels. Many studies have shown that nut intake can enhance the lipid profile in a dose-response way among individuals with increased serum lipids. This systematic review examines the effectiveness of nuts on the lipid profile among patients with dyslipidemia from different age groups. A total of 29 interventional studies from 5 databases met the inclusion criteria. In all, 20 studies were randomized controlled clinical trials, whereas 9 were crossover-controlled clinical trials. Participants included in the studies were different in terms of age, sex and, serum lipid profile. The studies were inconsistent in the type of tree nuts, duration, dose, and the nut forms. All studies indicated changes in the lipid profile after the intervention particularly on the total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein. Interventional periods ranged from 3 weeks up to 12 months with doses ranged from 15 to 126 gm. In conclusion, this review provides an evidence of favorable effect of nuts consumption of serum lipid profile.

Abstract                     Objective:Uncovering the connection of serum lipid profile (total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, LDL, VLDL) with preeclampsia in pregnancy and postpartum, and its outcome. Method:This is a cross-sectional comparative analytic study Result:From 28 preeclampsia subject were found, mean value of systole 165.36 mmHg and 105.71 diastole. Serum lipid profile in pregnancy and postpartum has a significant differences and correlated with preeclampsia, total cholesterol 234.5 mg/dl and 192.71 mg/dl, p=0.000; medium positive in pregnancy with systole r=0.461; p=0.013, weak positive with diastole r=0.380; p=0.046; postpartum with systole medium positive r=0.615; p=0.001, and weak positive with diastole r=0.317; p=0.100. LDL 140.5 mg/dl and 102.5 mg/dl, p=0.000; pregnancy and systole r=0.446; p=0,017; and postpartum were medium positive r=0.546; p=0.003. HDL 51.5 mg/dl and 43.5 mg/dl, p=0.003; not correlated with BP. Triglyceride 268.89 mg/dl and 208.96 mg/dl, p=0.000; pregnancy r=0.516; p=0.005; postpartum r= 0.515; p=0.005 has medium correlation with systole. VLDL 53.78 mg/dl and 41.79, p=0.000; pregnancy r=0.461; p=0.013 systole medium positive; r=0.380; p=0.046 diastole weak positive; postpartum r=0,615; p=0,001 systole strong positive. Conclusion:All parameter of serum lipid profile in pregnancy and postpartum has significant differences and related with severe preeclampsia. Total cholesterol, LDL, triglyceride, and VLDL correlated with BP in severe preeclampsia. Aim: Numerous studies have been previously carried out to find out any correlation between lipid profile and periodontitis but existence of an association does not establish whether periodontitis causes an elevation in serum lipid level or elevation in serum lipid profile predispose to periodontitis. The aim of the present study was to find any significant correlation between HDL, LDL, VLDL and cholesterol with periodontitis. Material and Methods: 100 patients with chronic periodontitis (group I) and 50 healthy patients (group II) were selected. The levels of serum lipid, including HDL, LDL, VLDL, and TOTAL CHOLESTEROL along with fasting blood glucose were assessed. The relationship between severity of periodontitis based on clinical and radiographic finding with serum lipid correlated. Results: There was no significant difference found between mean values of total cholesterol, LDL and VLDL among study and control group. Only HDL showed a highly significant difference (p< 0.00) between healthy and patient with chronic periodontitis. Conclusion: Estimation of serum lipid profile, especially HDL levels in subjects with periodontitis can be considered as a screening method for early diagnosis of atherosclerosis to avoid further progression of cardiovascular changes in early age of the life.
