AbstractWe have studied nematic hybrid films with homeotropic alignment at the top surface and various controlled degrees of in plane ordering, going from a random degenerate organization to a completely uniform alignment along one direction, at the bottom one. We show, by Monte Carlo (MC) computer simulations and experiments on photopatterned films with the bottom support surface fabricated with in-plane order similar to the simulated ones, that the point defects observed in the case of random planar orientations at the bottom tend to arrange along a filament as the surface ordering is sufficiently increased. MC simulations complement the polarized microscopy texture observations allowing to inspect the 3D structure of the defects and examine the role of elastic constants.

AbstractBehavior of point defects in annealing is investigated a lot in order to suppress the Transient Enhanced Diffusion (TED) of boron as is urged by the development of integrated circuits. Surface annihilation possibility for point defects is very important in determining junction depth in the case of ultra-shallow doping. However the understanding on it is still ambiguous considering the inconsistent results on surface annihilation behavior. In this paper the variation of surface annihilation possibility is studied. The simulation on boron diffusion as well as silicon diffusion is performed. The evolution of Si clusters is simulated. By explaining experimental results with Kinetic Monte Carlo method based simulation, we proposed that surface annihilation possibility varies in different cases.

We present a Monte Carlo study of the effects of elastic anisotropy on the textures of nematic films with specific random hybrid boundary conditions. The polarized microscopy images and their evolution are analyzed in uniaxial systems for different values of the elastic constants.

The histology of the endometrium has traditionally been established by observation of two-dimensional (2D) pathological sections. However, because human endometrial glands exhibit coiling and branching morphology, it is extremely difficult to obtain an entire image of the glands by 2D observation. In recent years, the development of three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of serial pathological sections by computer and whole-mount imaging technology using tissue clearing methods with high-resolution fluorescence microscopy has enabled us to observe the 3D histoarchitecture of tissues. As a result, 3D imaging has revealed that human endometrial glands form a plexus network in the basalis, similar to the rhizome of grass, whereas mouse uterine glands are single branched tubular glands. This review summarizes the relevant literature on the 3D structure of mouse and human endometrium and discusses the significance of the rhizome structure in the human endometrium and the expected role of understanding the 3D tissue structure in future applications to systems biology.

The so-called clp genes, which encode components of the Clp proteolytic complex, are widespread among bacteria. The Bifidobacterium breve UCC 2003 genome contains a clpB gene with significant homology to predicted clpB genes from other members of the Actinobacteridae group. The heat- and osmotic-inducibility of the B. breve UCC 2003 clpB homologue was verified by slot-blot analysis, while Northern blot and primer extension analyses showed that the clpB gene is transcribed as a monocistronic unit with a single promoter. The role of a hspR homologue, known to control the regulation of clpB and dnaK gene expression in other high G+C content bacteria was investigated by gel mobility shift assays. Moreover the predicted 3D structure of HspR provides further insight into the binding mode of this protein to the clpB promoter region, and highlights the key amino acid residues believed to be involved in the protein–DNA interaction.

AbstractIn this paper we focus on the elastic and thermodynamic properties of the B1 phase of CaO by using the modified TBP model, including the role of temperature. We have successfully obtained the phase transition pressure and volume change at different temperatures. In addition elastic constants and bulk modulus of B1 phase of CaO at different temperatures are discussed. Our results are comparable with the previous ones at high temperatures and pressures. The thermodynamical properties of the B1 phase of CaO are also predicted.
