AbstractEndometriosis—a systemic and chronic condition occurring in women of childbearing age—is a highly enigmatic disease with unresolved questions. While multiple biomarkers, genomic analysis, questionnaires, and imaging techniques have been advocated as screening and triage tests for endometriosis to replace diagnostic laparoscopy, none have been implemented routinely in clinical practice. We investigated the use of machine learning algorithms (MLA) in the diagnosis and screening of endometriosis based on 16 key clinical and patient-based symptom features. The sensitivity, specificity, F1-score and AUCs of the MLA to diagnose endometriosis in the training and validation sets varied from 0.82 to 1, 0–0.8, 0–0.88, 0.5–0.89, and from 0.91 to 0.95, 0.66–0.92, 0.77–0.92, respectively. Our data suggest that MLA could be a promising screening test for general practitioners, gynecologists, and other front-line health care providers. Introducing MLA in this setting represents a paradigm change in clinical practice as it could replace diagnostic laparoscopy. Furthermore, this patient-based screening tool empowers patients with endometriosis to self-identify potential symptoms and initiate dialogue with physicians about diagnosis and treatment, and hence contribute to shared decision making.

We present our latest research work on the development of a skin image analysis tool by using machine-learning algorithms. Skin imaging is very import in skin research. Over the years, we have used and developed different types of skin imaging techniques. As the number of skin images and the type of skin images increase, there is a need of a dedicated skin image analysis tool. In this paper, we report the development of such software tool by using the latest MATLAB App Designer. It is simple, user friendly and yet powerful. We intend to make it available on GitHub, so that others can benefit from the software. This is an ongoing project; we are reporting here what we have achieved so far, and more functions will be added to the software in the future.

AbstractMachine Learning has proven its ability in healthcare as an assisting technology for health care providers either by saving precious time or timely alerts or vitals monitoring. However, their application in real world is limited by availability of data. In this paper, we show that simple machine learning algorithms especially neural networks, if designed carefully, are extremely effective even with limited amount of data. Specifically with exhaustive experiments on standard Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology database (MNIST) dataset we analyse the impact of various parameters for effective performance. Further, on a custom dataset collected at a tertiary care hospital for hypertension analysis, we apply these design considerations to achieve better performance as compared to competitive baselines. On a real world dataset of only a few hundred patients, we show the effectiveness of these design choices and report an accuracy of 75% in determining whether a patient suffers from hypertension.

Osteoporosis is treatable but often overlooked in clinical practice. We aimed to construct prediction models with machine learning algorithms to serve as screening tools for osteoporosis in adults over fifty years old. Additionally, we also compared the performance of newly developed models with traditional prediction models. Data were acquired from community-dwelling participants enrolled in health checkup programs at a medical center in Taiwan. A total of 3053 men and 2929 women were included. Models were constructed for men and women separately with artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), and logistic regression (LoR) to predict the presence of osteoporosis. Area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) was used to compare the performance of the models. We achieved AUROC of 0.837, 0.840, 0.843, 0.821, 0.827 in men, and 0.781, 0.807, 0.811, 0.767, 0.772 in women, for ANN, SVM, RF, KNN, and LoR models, respectively. The ANN, SVM, RF, and LoR models in men, and the ANN, SVM, and RF models in women performed significantly better than the traditional Osteoporosis Self-Assessment Tool for Asians (OSTA) model. We have demonstrated that machine learning algorithms improve the performance of screening for osteoporosis. By incorporating the models in clinical practice, patients could potentially benefit from earlier diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.

The motion picture industry is one of the largest industries worldwide and has significant importance in the global economy. Considering the high stakes and high risks in the industry, forecast models and decision support systems are gaining importance. Several attempts have been made to estimate the theatrical performance of a movie before or at the early stages of its release. Nevertheless, these models are mostly used for predicting domestic performances and the industry still struggles to predict box office performances in overseas markets. In this study, the aim is to design a forecast model using different machine learning algorithms to estimate the theatrical success of US movies in Turkey. From various sources, a dataset of 1559 movies is constructed. Firstly, independent variables are grouped as pre-release, distributor type, and international distribution based on their characteristic. The number of attendances is discretized into three classes. Four popular machine learning algorithms, artificial neural networks, decision tree regression and gradient boosting tree and random forest are employed, and the impact of each group is observed by compared by the performance models. Then the number of target classes is increased into five and eight and results are compared with the previously developed models in the literature.

The online English teaching system has certain requirements for the intelligent scoring system, and the most difficult stage of intelligent scoring in the English test is to score the English composition through the intelligent model. In order to improve the intelligence of English composition scoring, based on machine learning algorithms, this study combines intelligent image recognition technology to improve machine learning algorithms, and proposes an improved MSER-based character candidate region extraction algorithm and a convolutional neural network-based pseudo-character region filtering algorithm. In addition, in order to verify whether the algorithm model proposed in this paper meets the requirements of the group text, that is, to verify the feasibility of the algorithm, the performance of the model proposed in this study is analyzed through design experiments. Moreover, the basic conditions for composition scoring are input into the model as a constraint model. The research results show that the algorithm proposed in this paper has a certain practical effect, and it can be applied to the English assessment system and the online assessment system of the homework evaluation system algorithm system.

Detecting some patterns is a simple task for humans, but nearly impossible for current machine learning algorithms.  Here, the "checkerboard" pattern is examined, where human prediction nears 100% and machine prediction drops significantly below 50%.
