AbstractThe compositional and functional role of the endophytic bacterial community, associated with black scented rice, in correlation with its antioxidant property has been elucidated. Community dissimilarity analysis confirmed the overlapping of community in shoot and root tissues at the young stage, but not in mature plants. Proteobacteria was the most abundant phylum, in which Agrobacterium, Pleomorphomonas, Bradyrhizobium, Novasphingobium, Caulobacter were the most abundant genera, followed by Cyanobacteria and Planctomycetes in all three different varieties of the black rice. The antioxidant activity of mature plants was found to be higher in comparison to young plants. Intrinsically, the relative abundance of Pleomorphomonas and Streptomyces was positively correlated with total phenol content, while Gemmata, unclassified Pirellulaceae, unclassified Stramenopiles positively correlated with total flavonoid content and negatively correlated with Free radical scavenging activity. Accordingly, functional metagenome analysis of the endophytic microbiome revealed that naringenin -3-dioxygenase and anthocyanidin 3-O-glucosyltransferase for phenylpropanoid (flavonoid and anthocyanin) synthesis were abundant in the endophytic microbiome of mature plants. Specific enrichment of the antioxidant producing genes in the mature plant endophytic microbiome was assigned to some bacteria such as Streptomyces, Pantoea which might have contributed to the common pathway of flavonoid synthesis. The genomes of endophytic isolates Kluyvera sp.PO2S7, Bacillus subtilis AMR1 and Enterobacter sp. SES19 were sequenced and annotated, and were found to have genes for phenylpropanoid synthesis in their genomes.

Lipid profile is a blood test that measures the amount of lipids, or fats, in your blood. The lipids measured are usually total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C and triglycerides. When levels of these lipids are abnormal, there is an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. In our study, we use methanol crude extract for lipid lowering activity on rabbit and found that lipid profile was reduced by 14.0, 1.0, 4.0 and 15.0 mg/dl for total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C and triglyceride respectively after using the plant extract (dose 500mg/rabbit for 10 days); where atorvastatin (0.005mg/rabbit) was used as standard lipid lowering agent. We also focused on the antioxidant property of crude methanol extract. Here we also carried out free radical-scavenging activity study and found the IC50 value for C. tamala is 6.00 μg/ml where the standard antioxidant (ascorbic acid) gave the value of 3.21μg/ml. Aims: In traditional medicine, several plant species from Rutaceae’s family have been used to treat sickle cell anemia. However, more studies are needed to corroborate the antisickling activity of Zanthoxylum leprieurii species. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the sickling cell inhibition and radical scavenging activities of hydroethanolic and aqueous extracts of Zanthoxylum leprieurii’s bark, a plant species used in the management of sickle cell anemia in eastern Côte d’Ivoire. Methods: Hydroethanolic and aqueous extracts of the stem bark of Zanthoxylum leprieurii were prepared. Qualitative and quantitative phytochemical tests were carried out. In addition, diphenyl 1, 2 picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) was used to determine the antioxidant potential of these two extracts. The antisickling activity of two extracts was determined by the Emmel method. Results and Discussion: Zanthoxylum leprieurii’s barkextracts have demonstrated antioxidant property. The IC50 value of the hydroethanolic extract (0.308±0.06) was lower than that of the decocted (0.434 ±0.06). At 10 mg/mL, the sickling cell inhibition of DZL was 81% ±2.66 while EZL was 89% ±0.44. The presence of alkaloids, sterols, Polyterpenes and phenolic compounds in both extracts could explain the sickling inhibition activity of these extracts. All the extracts revealed an antioxidant and antisickling activities higher than the standard. Conclusion: The hydroethanolic extract (EZL) demonstrated a higher antisickling activity and exhibited a better free radical scavenging activity. The use of Zanthoxylum leprieurii’s bark in the traditional management of sickle cell anemia is justified.

Colour and texture are very important quality properties of all foods. In this work, the influence was investigated of different types of pectin on colour and textural properties in strawberry jams and low-calorie strawberry jams containing fructose and aspartame or fructose syrup and aspartame. The highest anthocyanin content and total phenol content were detected in strawberry jam samples prepared with low methoxy amidated pectin. During storage, after 4 and 6 weeks at both storage temperatures, room temperature and 4°C, anthocyanin content and total phenol content decreased. Also, free radical scavenging activity decreased during storage. As far as the texture parameters are concerned, namely firmness, consistency and cohesiveness, the highest values were found in strawberry jam samples prepared with high methoxyl pectin.

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were used for the spring greenhouse cultivation of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) ‘Milar F1’ and tomato (S. lycopersicon L.) ‘Benito F1’ transplants. Seedlings were grown under natural light conditions with the supplemental LED light. A 16-h photoperiod provided plants with a DLI of 12.6 (eggplant) and 9.6 (tomato) mol m2/day. Four supplemental light spectra were tested: L1 (90% red + 10% blue); L2 (80% red + 20% blue); L3 (43% red + 42% blue+15% green) and L4 (56% red + 26% blue + 15% green + 3% UV-A). The PPFD in each LED light treatment was 150 ± 20 µmol/m2·s. Compared to the control plants (without LED lighting), the eggplant transplants had about a 25% larger leaf area and a higher level of total phenol content as well as a higher antiradical scavenging activity under the L1 spectrum. The favourable spectrum for the tomato transplants consisted of red to blue in a ratio of 1 : 1 mixed with a green light (L3) – the leaves were characterised by a higher content of dry matter, soluble sugars, photosynthetic pigments and total phenols; also the radical scavenging activity increased in comparison to the control group. It was shown that the supplemental irradiation of transplants was economically acceptable.

Blackberries are an important option for the diversification of fruit crops. However, there is currently no literature regarding plant cultivation in high-altitude tropical climates. Knowledge of the phenolic composition of blackberries is essential because variations in the levels of these components may exist between cultivars and may depend on environmental conditions. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to evaluate the total phenol content of different blackberry cultivars (Arapaho, Brazos, Cainguangue, Cherokee, Choctaw, Comanche, Ébano, Guarani, Tupy and Xavante). Free radical scavenging activity in these cultivars was assayed using a DPPH test. The HPLC-UV chromatogram of blackberry fruit extracts at 280 nm revealed the presence of phenolic compounds. The results showed significant differences in the levels of phenolic compounds in the blackberry cultivars tested. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using the ABTS free radical and ranged from 2.7 ± 0.1 to 19 ± 2 μmole of Trolox equivalents per gram of sample (b.u.). These results are in good correlation with the phenolic contents of the blackberries tested. The Xavante blackberry cultivar had the highest levels of polyphenols that could be individually identified. Catechin polyphenols were found to be the main component in the blackberry varieties tested.

Leaf methanol extract and fractions of Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) A. Gray (Asteraceae) used in traditional medicine was evaluated for neutralization of toxicity induced by Bitis arietans and Naja nigricollis snake venoms in mice and rats. Inhibition of adenosine diphosphate-induced platelet aggregation, antioxidant activity, total phenol content and neutralization of venom-induced toxicity were evaluated by standard methods. The methanol extract was the most active inhibitor of platelet aggregation (66.7 - 84.8%) in the B. arietans model at 100 - 500 μg/ml. The methanol extract and fractions appear to be equipotent  in inhibiting platelet aggregation (68 - 74%) induced by N. nigricollis. The aqueous fraction was more active against B. arietans venom at 500 μg/ml as an inhibitor of platelet aggregation (59.4% inhibition), while the dichloromethane (DCM) fraction was more potent against N. nigricollis (70.97% inhibition). The methanol extract showed highest DPPH radical scavenging activity followed by the aqueous and DCM fractions. Total phenolic content was in the order: methanol extract > DCM fraction > aqueous fraction. The aqueous fraction was a better antivenin agent in both B. arietans (complete protection at 24 h) and N. nigricollis-envenomed mice and rat models. Anti-snake venom activity was more prominent at 24 h. The results herein, being the very first report, indicate the potential antiophidic activity of T. diversifolia leaf particularly against B. arietans-induced toxicity.

The aim of this study was to determine the procedure parameters, including drying, extracting and pH on the antioxidant activity and antioxidative compounds in Perilla frutescens leaves. The extraction of antioxidants from Perilla frutescens leaves is studied considering different drying and extracting procedures to investigate the selectivity of the process. The radical-scavenging activity (RSA) of 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and the determination of the total phenolic content are applied to evaluate the antioxidant activity and antioxidative compounds of the Perilla frutescens leave extracts. The highest antioxidant activity is observed for the extract obtained by freeze drying, extracting by ultrasound with 80% methanol adjusted at pH 4.The antioxidant compound extraction yield was also the highest at these extraction conditions. The total phenol contents among the Perilla frutescens leave extracts produced by different drying procedures were similar, while the antioxidant activities were different This concluding that the amount of phenolic compounds extracted was similar but the type and probable structure of the phenolic changed during heat-drying procedure providing in this way. Our study showed that proper process technology could ultimately extract compounds potentially effective against diseases related to free radical oxidation.

The phenolic compounds of many fruits have been known to be efficient cellular protective antioxidants. In this study, antioxidative and antiviral properties of flowering cherry cultivars (Prunus yedoensis, Prunus sargentii, Prunus lannesiana, and Prunus cerasus) in Korea were investigated. The antioxidant property was assayed for specific activities including 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) hydroxy radical scavenging activity, reducing power capacity, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) like activity. In addition, antiviral activity was determined by inhibition studies on the infection cycle of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), measured as minimum concentration of cherry extracts that inhibited 50% of cytopathic effect (CPE) on PEDV. Our results show that the four varieties of cherries contain substantially high antioxidants and antiviral activities. In particular, P. cerasus contains higher antioxidants and antiviral activities as well as polyphenolic content than other varieties. Our data indicate that Korean native cherry cultivars could be beneficial supplements of dietary antioxidants and natural antiviral agents.

Dried Pleurotus ostreatus mushrooms stored in polythene and polypropylene packs were exposed to gamma radiation from a cobalt-60 source at doses of 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 kGy at a dose rate of 1.7 kGy/hr and stored for a period of 1 month. Total phenolic contents, flavonoids, and free radical scavenging activity DPPH (2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) were determined using aqueous, ethanol, and methanol extracts by Folin-Ciocaultaeu method as a source of potential natural antioxidants. Total phenol content ranged 0.56 ± 0.01–10.96 ± 1.7 mg/GAE, flavonoids ranged 1.64 ± 0.05–8.92 ± 0.6 mg/QE, DPPH radical scavenging activity also ranged 7.02 ± 0.10–13.03 ± 0.04%, and IC50 values also ranged 0.08–0.16 mg/mL. Statistical differences (P < 0.05) were recorded for the extracts and the treatment doses of mushrooms stored in polythene and polypropylene packs. A significant linear correlation was confirmed between values for the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of mushroom extracts. The high contents of phenolic compounds indicated that these compounds contribute to high antioxidant activity. Pleurotus ostreatus can be regarded as a promising candidate for natural mushroom sources of antioxidants with high value. The use of low dose gamma radiation by the local food industry could improve the hygienic quality, extend shelf-life, and preserve nutrients and antinutrients.
