Copper (II) ions have been shown to greatly improve the chemical stability and peroxidase-like activity of gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). Since the affinity between Cu2+ and pyrophosphate (PPi) is higher than that between Cu2+ and AuNCs, the catalytic activity of AuNCs-Cu2+ decreases with the introduction of PPi. Based on this principle, a new colorimetric detection method of PPi with high sensitivity and selectivity was developed by using AuNCs-Cu2+ as a probe. Under optimized conditions, the detection limit of PPi was 0.49 nM with a linear range of 0.51 to 30,000 nM. The sensitivity of the method was three orders of magnitude higher than that of a fluorescence method using AuNCs-Cu2+ as the probe. Finally, the AuNCs-Cu2+ system was successfully applied to directly determine the concentration of PPi in human urine samples.

Inspired by the active site structure of natural horseradish peroxidase having iron as a pivotal element with coordinated histidine residues, we have developed histidine coated magnetic nanoparticles (His@MNPs) with relatively uniform and small sizes (less than 10 nm) through one-pot heat treatment. In comparison to pristine MNPs and other amino acid coated MNPs, His@MNPs exhibited a considerably enhanced peroxidase-imitating activity, approaching 10-fold higher in catalytic reactions. With the high activity, His@MNPs then were exploited to detect the important neurotransmitter acetylcholine. By coupling choline oxidase and acetylcholine esterase with His@MNPs as peroxidase mimics, target choline and acetylcholine were successfully detected via fluorescent mode with high specificity and sensitivity with the limits of detection down to 200 and 100 nM, respectively. The diagnostic capability of the method is demonstrated by analyzing acetylcholine in human blood serum. This study thus demonstrates the potential of utilizing His@MNPs as peroxidase-mimicking nanozymes for detecting important biological and clinical targets with high sensitivity and reliability.

Adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) is known as a universal energy source and signaling mediator in numerous biological processes. Among the methods for its determination, molecular fluorescence probes occupy leading positions due to high sensitivity and selectivity. Recently we have shown that 31 of 33 tested flavones and quinolones of various structures give fluorescence response and can be effectively applied as the probes in aqueous solutions for detection of ATP in 1–50,000 μM range of its concentrations. To increase response parameters of a probe in respect to ATP we have synthesized N,N'-(butane-1,4-diyl)bis(2-((2-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)-3-hydroxy-4-oxo-4H-chromene-6-yl)oxy)acetamide, the molecular tweezer composed of two flavonol units connected by active linker. On our idea, being equipped by two planar platforms, the tweezershould demonstrate increased affinity and selectivity to ATP in a result of increased number of hydrogen bonds and increased stacking interactions. Having two NH-amide groups the amino acid linker will form hydrogen bonds with the phosphates of ATP, increasing the portion of probe-ATP complex population in the reporting conformation. In the four-step synthesis of this molecular device, starting from methyl 2-(3-acetyl-4-hydroxyphenoxy)acetate and N,N-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde, the conditions for the reaction of one-pot chalcone formation and its oxidative heterocyclization in the presence of an organic base were found, which resulted in the isolation of a target flavonol-amino acid derivative with high yields. We suggest that atmospheric oxygen was an oxidizer in this process. The obtained derivative was converted intotarget compound by dual condensation with 1,4-butane diamine.

A new colorimetric assay for the detection of sulfide anions with high sensitivity and selectivity is reported, utilizing Au-Hg alloy nanorods (Au-HgNRs) as probe. Au-HgNRs were prepared by modifying gold nanorods (AuNRs) with reducing agent and mercury ions. In an aqueous solution with sulfide anions, the formation of mercuric sulfide due to redox reaction between the amalgams and sulfide anions greatly changed the surface chemistry and morphology of the Au-HgNRs, leading to a red shift of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption peak, accompanied by a change in colorimetric response. A good linear relationship was obtained between the LSPR peak wavelength shift and concentration of sulfide anion in the range of 1 × 10−5−1 × 10−4 mol/L. The selectivity of this method has been investigated by other anions. The colorimetric sensing system successfully detected sulfide in wastewater from leather industry.

Photoelectrochemical water splitting is a promising field for sustainable energy production using hydrogen. Development of efficient catalysts is essential for resourceful hydrogen production. The most efficient catalysts reported to date have been extremely precious rare-earth metals. One of the biggest hurdles in this research area is the difficulty of developing highly efficient catalysts comparable to the noble metal catalysts. Here, we report that non-noble metal dichalcogenide (Co3Se4) catalysts made using a facile one-pot electrodeposition method, showed highly efficient photoelectrochemical activity on a Si photocathode. To enhance light collection and enlarge its surface area even further, we implemented surface nano-structuring on the Si surface. The nano-structured Si photoelectrode has an effective area greater than that of planar silicon and a wider absorption spectrum. Consequently, this approach exhibits reduced overvoltage as well as increased photo-catalytic activity. Such results show the importance of controlling the optimized interface between the surface structure of the photoelectrode and the electrodeposited co-catalyst on it to improve catalytic activity. This should enable other electrochemical reactions in a variety of energy conversion systems.

This paper presents colorimetric determination of Hg(II) based on MoS2 nanosheets with peroxidase mimics activity. The structure of the this sensor by the peroxidase mimic activity material of MoS2 nanosheets with TMB (Tetramethylbenzidine) solution, the colorimetric detection target of Hg(II) is determined by on-off mechanism using biomolecule of cysteine. The MoS2 nanosheets evaluated by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR and SEM image, confirms formation of a flower like structure. Our results shows that a simple colorimetric detection using peroxidase mimic mechanism can be used to MoS2 nanosheets and determine the Hg(II) in aqueous solution with high sensitivity (10 nM) comparable to those of other nanomaterials. The result suggests that MoS2 nanosheets is a promising new and simple colorimetric sensor for applications in environmental and biological applications.
