The paper will present a review of different solutions for transparent conducting electrodes on flexible substrates. The analysis of the present situation reveals a gap for low sheet resistance electrodes. Two new approaches to the problem will be presented. The first one is a novel technology for the deposition of zinc oxide on polyethylene terephtalate film. The intention for this process is the establishment of a low cost coating in a roll-to-roll machine. Silicon was used as the dopant material with a concentration varying in different samples between 1 and 4 %. The optimum parameters provided a transparent layer with a sheet resistance of 16 Ωsqu. Metal grids are a second promising approach for achieving low sheet resistance electrodes. The combination of these grids with transparent conducting oxides (TCO) will be presented. The TCO were deposited under vacuum in a roll-to-roll coating machine. The grids were applied by aerosol jet printing and subsequent tempering of the film.

Transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) formed with silver nanowires (AgNWs) have attracted attention as substitutes for indium tin oxide (ITO). However, the randomly deposited AgNW film performs poorly in terms of the transmittance and sheet resistance to serve as a substitute of ITO. To improve the performance of the AgNW film, we fabricated a grid-patterned AgNW by modifying the surface energy of the substrate. The hydrophobized surface was selectively etched by UV light through a quartz chrome mask, and a suspension of AgNWs in isopropyl alcohol/ethylene glycol mixture was coated on the substrate by a meniscus dragging deposition process. The grid-patterned AgNW film has a lower percolation threshold and a 13% higher figure-of-merit value compared to the randomly deposited AgNW film. The transparent thin films with a grid structure of AgNWs exhibit the high electrical conductivity with a sheet resistance of 33 Ohm/sq at a transmittance of 92.7% (λ = 550 nm).

AbstractPresent article reports on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) modified poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT: PSS) based transparent conducting electrodes for flexible optoelectronic applications. PEDOT: PSS samples embedded with different rGO concentrations i.e. 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 wt% were prepared and later on, bar coated on polyethylene terephthalate substrate using a 30 μm wire size bar. Various parameters including sheet resistance, bending test (outside and inside bending), optical transmittance etc. were estimated. Our analysis indicates that the samples with 1 wt% rGO possess improved results i.e. low sheet resistance (315 ± 8 Ω/sq.) and high transmittance (~ 74%). Additionally, the sample shows low electrical resistance variation up to 12% (maximum increase) during outward bending and 9% (maximum decrease) during inward bending of the sample for bending curvature from 20 to 100 m−1.

Silver (Ag) nanowire having mean diameter and length of about 170.42 nm and 20.01 µm were prepared by the polyol process in ethylene glycol. Ag nanowires transparent conducting electrodes were then fabricated by depositing the Ag nanowires in ethanol and ink formulation on polymer substrates using a Meyer rod. The Ag nanowire electrodes exhibit an optical transmittance of about 68 % due to the large diameters of the as synthesized Ag nanowires. On the other hand, the sheet resistance was measured to be about 148 ohms/sq. When expose in air for 10 weeks, the sheet resistance increase to about 13 kohms/sq. Localized Joule heating during application of electrical stress of about 2 V for 7 days has resulted in the Ag nanowire degradation.

There is an increased need for research on flexible transparent electrodes (FTEs) because they are critical to next-generation electronic devices, such as wearable computers. In this study, highly conductive transparent conducting electrodes, based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofiber webs treated with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and silver nanowires (AgNWs), were successfully fabricated. Transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) were obtained by a brush-painting process using different weight ratios of a AgNWs to PEDOT:PSS solution, and the surface, electrical, optical, and chemical properties, as well as the tensile strength of the samples, were determined. It was found that the electrical conductivity of the samples improved as the AgNW content increased, but the light transmittance decreased. In this work, there was a slight decrease in the optical properties and a considerable increase in the electrical properties due to the hybridization of AgNWs and PEDOT:PSS, compared to using only PEDOT:PSS. When considering both transparency and electrical conductivity, which are essential parameters of TCEs, sample PA2, which was treated by mixing AgNWs and PEDOT:PSS/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in a ratio of 1:5 (16.67 wt% of AgNWs), was found to be the best sample, with a sheet resistance of 905 Ω/cm2 and light transmittance of 79%.
