Purpose: Research has repeatedly shown that having children negatively affects the early academic careers of women. The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate whether this well-established negative impact in “science, technology, engineering, and math” applies to the discipline of communication sciences and disorders (CSD) as well as to examine what solutions or supports would ensure their retention and success. Method: A national survey of 84 academic mothers in CSD was conducted to capture their experiences. An inductive, qualitative approach to the analysis of the survey transcripts was implemented to distinctly understand the participants' views and experiences of the interaction of motherhood and their academic careers. Qualitative research methods were used to provide a systematic way to explore complicated subjects that cannot be isolated from their contexts. Results: Analyses of the survey data revealed five major themes, including Balance, Expectations, Support, Solutions, and Fertility . Results of the survey indicate that academic mothers broadly feel as though they are being asked to choose which aspect of their lives they care about more (career or family). They also indicated that simple solutions, many of which have been implemented at various academic institutions, would alleviate many of their barriers to success and well-being. Conclusions: The findings of this exploratory study emphasize alignment with national data detailing the barriers academic mothers face within the academy within the discipline of CSD. Implications for change include developing supportive cultures around families, support with child care financials and logistics, autonomy around scheduling, and flexible positions.

BackgroundThe provision of care for children of parents with a mental health problem is an area that is frequently neglected by health-care practitioners.ObjectivesThe aim of the overall study was to explore psychiatric nurses’ knowledge of, attitudes and practice towards the support needs of children whose parent has a mental health problem. This paper specifically addresses the views of psychiatric nurses towards children visiting their parent in a mental health inpatient facility.MethodThis study employed a self-completion survey design with a sample of 114 registered psychiatric nurses from one integrated mental health service in Ireland.ResultsThe majority of participants were in favour of children visiting their parent when in hospital, but were of the view that the visiting areas should be away from the main ward location and designed to be child-friendly. Many expressed concerns about the standard of visiting facilities and worried about the potentially negative impact of a visit on the child's well-being. In relation to education on child-care issues, a significant majority of the participants reported not having received any education in the child-care issues identified and, as a likely consequence, rated their knowledge as insufficient.ConclusionsThis study highlights the need for further work in the areas of practitioner education, child-friendly visiting facilities, and the development of policy and practice guidelines around children whose parents experience a mental health problem.

Objective: To exhibit the meanings attributed to quality of life by patients with facial melasma. Methods: Qualitative research using the focal group technique, with 10 people with facial melasma from a public hospital and private clinic of a municipality in the interior of the state of São Paulo. The methodological indicative used was content analysis. Results: In the interviewees’ speech, one perceives the annoyance generated by the opinion of others, with curious and even malicious questions related to the blemish. There is difficulty to hide the injuries and the appearance of skin neglect is also cause for distress for the participants. Conclusion: Because it affects the face, which makes it easily visible, melasma is uncomfortable and has a negative impact on the quality of life, since it affects patients’ psychological and emotional well-being.

Power is a very important element of negotiation, because it gives advantage to one party over the other. Various tactics used by negotiators are either aimed at increasing their own power or decreasing the power of the opponent. This paper presents a conceptual analysis and research proposals that build on past research on power and negotiation. The main purpose of the present study was to investigate sources of negotiation power most used among business professionals. We have developed an extensive list of sixteen sources of negotiating power. In this exploratory study we used a qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews. We chose purposive sampling in order to capture perceptions from different groups of negotiators. The results from thirty-one interviews show that need is the most relied upon source of power in any given situation, followed by perception, credibility, alternative, relationship, intangible factors, authority, material resources, and knowledge/information. Although qualitative research cannot be used to make generalisations about the entire population, this study should help negotiators to focus on the most probable sources of negotiation power and to prepare for negotiations adequately.

Qualitative research suggests that day-to-day problems with child care produce significant costs for low-income mothers. But the relevance of daily child care problems for mothers of all socioeconomic backgrounds has been largely overlooked. This article asks two interrelated questions: What factors shape how often mothers experience child care disruptions? and What factors shape how often care disruptions lead mothers to miss work? Using the Fragile Families and Child Well-Being Study ( N = 1,309), which includes mothers across the socioeconomic spectrum, this research finds that low-income mothers, mothers whose shifts vary, mothers who rely on patchwork care, and mothers with low social support are likely to experience care disruptions. But only mothers with low social support and mothers who use certain types of child care face an elevated risk of missing work. The findings underscore the widespread nature of child care problems and their heightened impact on socially isolated mothers.

This paper analyses homecoming experiences of African labour migrants who lived in Israel and returned home. Using qualitative research methodologies, I discerned what factors - material and non-material - determine the relative success of the return process. Focusing on these factors’ effects, I offer a new understanding of labour migrants’ homecoming experiences: those who are “content,” “readjusting,” or “lost. Following Ulrich Beck's (2006) analysis of cosmopolitanism, I suggest that these categories portray significant new life spaces that are neither what they left nor what they came from, and are dynamic, fragile, and constantly changing. In some cases the influence of economic assets on the returned migrants’ homecoming experience was indeed crucial, in many other cases the challenges of reconnecting oneself with home, family, and existing social norms and customs was much more influential on their homecoming experience including on their sense of well-being. Furthermore, some of the non-material goods such as individualization, personal responsibility, and long-term planning proved useful, others such as trust, particularly in relation to family, were detrimental.
