This study examined the relationship of bullying to self-esteem and anxiety in children and teenagers who stutter. Bullying in 59 children and teenagers who stutter was assessed using a newly-developed questionnaire, the Bullying Assessment. Additionally, the participants completed the Harter Self-Perception questionnaire, and an adapted version of the State-Trait-Anxiety Inventory. A significant correlation was found between bullying and the peer-related self-perception and state anxiety in a shop. The analysis was then repeated for two different age groups (children and teenagers) to assess whether or not there were differences over ages. For children, a relation between bullying and self-esteem was found, whereas for teenagers there was a relation between bullying and state anxiety. Clinical implications discuss strategies how to deal with bullying and highlight the importance of in-vivo-training and working on self-confidence.

The purpose of this study that focused on African American high school girls was threefold. First, the relationship of sports participation and victimization was explored. Second, the impact of sports participation on self-esteem was assessed. Third, the role of self-esteem and its disaggregated components (social acceptance, competence, and self-confidence) as mediators of the relationship between sports participation and victimization was examined. In accordance with the sport protection hypothesis, it was hypothesized that sports participation would be related to enhanced self-esteem and reduce victimization. Results suggest that sports participation appears to have some relationship to lower rates of victimization. There was also support for our assertion that sports participation was related to enhanced self-esteem. Finally, overall self-esteem and, specifically, the individual component competence mediated the relationship between sports participation and victimization.

Plasma corticosterone concentrations and in vitro adrenal secretion of corticosterone were determined in exercise-trained rats. Rats, 100, 200, and 300 days of age, were trained for a 10-wk period by treadmill running. Following the training program, rats were subjected to an acute bout of swimming. Acute swimming elevated plasma corticosterone concentrations in all age groups. At 170 days of age, the plasma corticosterone concentration following swimming was higher in exercise-trained rats than in controls. The opposite was true of acutely swum rats at 270 and 370 days of age. Acute swimming elevated the in vitro adrenal gland response to adrenocorticotropic hormone stimulation in control rats at all ages and in trained rats at 170 days of age. The in vivo relationship of epinephrine and the pituitary adrenal system is suggested as a mechanism which could have caused this response. The relationship of secretion rates to plasma corticosterone concentrations indicated that extra-adrenal mechanisms, such as decreased turnover, were also responsible for the elevated plasma corticosterone levels observed in response to acute swimming.

This study evaluated the relationship of perfectionism and self-perceptions with burnout and life satisfaction in aesthetic performers (N = 254) recruited in Sweden. Cluster analysis revealed four groups: perfectionistic with maladaptive self-perceptions, perfectionistic (parent-driven) with maladaptive self-perceptions, achievement-oriented with adaptive self-perceptions, and nonperfectionistic with adaptive self-perceptions. Performers in both maladaptive clusters reported characteristics suggesting they were perfectionistic compared to their peers. They also reported relatively high contingent self-worth and low basic self-esteem. In contrast, those in the nonperfectionistic with adaptive self-perceptions cluster scored relatively low on perfectionism and reported relatively high basic self-esteem and low contingent self-worth. The performers in the achievement-oriented with adaptive self-perceptions cluster reported average scores across most variables, moderately high personal standards, and higher basic self-esteem compared with contingent self-worth. Overall, performers in both maladaptive clusters reported the highest burnout and lowest life satisfaction. Study findings underscore the importance of perfectionism and self-perceptions when considering burnout and life satisfaction.

The relationship of parental nurturance to self-esteem for seven distinct adolescent and early-adulthood age groups ( N = 784) was investigated. Analysis showed that even though mothers' and fathers' nurturance together were more strongly related to self-esteem during the junior high school years ( R2 values >50% were obtained in each of the junior high samples) than during the high school and college years ( R2 values < 40% were obtained in each of these samples), parental nurturance still remained a robust predictor of self-esteem during these latter years. These results were discussed within the context of (a) the stability at different ages of the bases upon which one's judgments of self-esteem are made, and (b) parental nurturance as a stabilizing influence during the transitional years of adolescence and early adulthood.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the problem of eating disorders in adolescence among students. The main idea of the article is to consider the characteristics of self-attitude, self-esteem and the level of aspirations of boys and girls as a factor that determines the perception of their own appearance. In turn, the peculiarities of the perception of one’s own appearance, the peculiarities of building the image of one’s body, mediated by the influence of self-attitude, self-esteem and aspirations of students, can cause the appearance of eating disorders. The article analyzes the literature on the problem of psychological characteristics of attitudes towards oneself and one’s body, students’ perception of their own appearance, and gives the psychological characteristics of eating disorders in adolescence. The role of the media, relationships between others and family, character traits such as self-doubt, timidity, introversion, desire for order, keen perception of criticism, inadequacy of perception of one’s failures, low self-esteem and dissatisfaction with their own weight in the formation of eating disorders are shown. The description of the empirical research carried out is given. The analysis of the results of the peculiarities of self-perception in boys and girls with eating disorders, analysis of the relationship of eating disorders in boys and girls with peculiarities of self-perception, self-esteem and the level of aspirations is presented. It has been found that high levels of ambition and high self-esteem contribute to bulimia, or the desire for thinness.

This study investigated the relationship between self-perception of a learning disability (SPLD) and self-concept and social support. Fifty-six third-through sixth-grade children with learning disabilities were administered Heyman's SPLD scale. This instrument measures the degree to which children view their disability as circumscribed, modifiable and nonstigmatizing rather than global, unchangeable and stigmatizing. Students were also administered two scales developed by Harter to measure general and domain-specific self-concept and social support. Results revealed that children with less negative perceptions of their learning disability had higher math achievement scores. Also, they perceived more positive global self-concept, more intellectual and behavorial competence, and more social acceptance. These children also felt more support from their parents and classmates. The relationship of SPLD to self-concept and social support was maintained after partialing out the influences of actual academic achievement. The importance of helping students more clearly understand the nature of their learning disability is discussed.

Transgender children and adolescents show high rates of co-occurring psychopathology, which might be related to low self-confidence. Earlier research showed that compared to the norm population, transgender clinic–referred children have lower self-perception on two domains: physical appearance and global self-worth. This study aimed to compare self-perception in a sample of transgender clinic–referred children and adolescents with their standardization samples and to examine differences between these two groups. To measure self-esteem, the Self-Perception Profile for Children was administered to 305 referred children (162 assigned males at birth (AMABs) and 143 assigned females at birth (AFABs), mean age = 9.05 ( SD, 1.47), range = 5.9–13.00 years), and the Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents was administered to 369 referred adolescents (118 AMABs and 251 AFABs, mean age = 15.27 ( SD, 1.80), range = 10.73–18.03 years). To measure the severity of gender dysphoria, the parents of the children completed the Gender Identity Questionnaire and the adolescents completed the Utrecht Gender Dysphoria Scale. Referred children and adolescents had a significantly lower self-concept compared to the normative population, whereby referred adolescents felt less competent compared to referred children. Compared to their peers, childhood referred AFABs perceived themselves even better on scholastic and athletic competence and social acceptance. With regard to gender differences, referred AFABs generally showed a better self-perception compared to referred AMABs. The lower self-perception of transgender clinic–referred children and adolescents compared to same age peers deserves clinical attention and interventions aimed at, for example, improving social and physical self-worth.

Summary: The Gudjonsson Compliance Scale (GCS), the COPE Scale, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale were administered to 212 men and 212 women. Multiple regression of the test scores showed that low self-esteem and denial coping were the best predictors of compliance in both men and women. Significant sex differences emerged on all three scales, with women having lower self-esteem than men, being more compliant, and using different coping strategies when confronted with a stressful situation. The sex difference in compliance was mediated by differences in self-esteem between men and women.
