This article discusses the connotation and value of reflective level design. By analyzing some products of the four angles of reflective level including self-image expression, reflection of implication and understanding, narrative interpretation and metaphor, this article gives deep reflections of the reflective level product design. Finally, this article proposes a creative product design method based on emotional design, develops and enriches the current design methodology, and provides a new idea and possibility for cultural product design.

To succeed in the product development market today, firms must quickly and accurately satisfy customer needs while designing products that adequately accomplish their desired functions with a minimum number of failures. When failure analysis and prevention are coupled with a product’s design from its conception, potentially shorter design times and fewer redesigns are necessary to arrive at a final product design. In this article, we explore the utility of a novel design methodology that allows failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA)-style failure analysis to be conducted during conceptual design. The function-failure design method (FFDM) guides designers towards improved designs by predicting likely failure modes based on intended product functionality.

The product design theory and methods based on “the Scientific Outlook on Development” have been set up by our group in recent 10 years, The new progress concerning Research of product design theory and methods include: 1) QCTES was instead of IQCTES including six requirements of product design; 2) traditional design stages were replaced with four new stages including investigation, planning, implement and inspection; 3) green design was replaced with harmonious design; 4) traditional design method was replaced with deep-layer design method; 5) concept and connotation of product top-layer design were proposed; 6) more detailed contents of product synthesis design method were advanced. We got good effects to apply above product design methodology on many product designs recent years.

The wide variety of customers’ needs as well as the rapid change of these, increasingly requires the transition from mass produced products to customized product manufacturing that meet the individual needs of clients with consequence for the products design process. This paper present the core ideas of the mass customized and unique products design process, tools that can be used by designers in product design process and not least a customized design methodology intended to be used in order to design customized products. The design methodology for customized products emphasizes on action that must be taken, tools that can be used and results of each design steps.

Design and R&D (Research and Development) of products play an important role in development and competitiveness of enterprise. How to do the works better? We think that most advanced product design methodology should be used on design, research and development of products. So-called most advanced product design methodology is that based on “the Scientific Outlook on Development” that we set up recent years. New developments of product design methodology include: At first it has been classified that more than seventy theories and methods proposed by domestic and overseas scholars in recent 100 years; QCTES was instead of IQCTES including six requirements of product design; traditional design stages were replaced with four new stages including investigation, planning, implement and inspection; green design was replaced with harmonious design; traditional design method was replaced with deep-layer design method; concept and connotation of product top-layer design were proposed; more detailed contents of product systematic design were advanced; formulas of complete system and product design quality, and connection equation between design objective, design content and design method were submitted. We got good effects to apply above product design methodology on many product designs recent years.

The purpose of this research is the development of new design method for integrating the optimum strength evaluation and the product design which can make the best use of material's characteristics obtained by the experiment and the analysis. Further we do design using high-strength composite material with this developed concept which is different from conventional design. First, to establish this design method of high-strength materials, we examined these materials characteristics and manufacturing methods and the commercialized products. As this research target material, we focus the fiber reinforced materials such as composite with carbon fiber, glass fiber and aramid fiber. Above all, we marked the carbon fiber which has the high specific tensile strength, wear resistance, heat conductivity and conductance. Here, we introduce the fundamental design concept which makes the best use of the design with enough strength.

The concept of schifflerization of 90° equal-leg angle is presented and its application in triangular-base latticed steel towers is explained. The similarities and differences between schifflerized angles and regular 90° angles are discussed. The current design practice for schifflerized angles is reviewed and its limitation is highlighted. A design method which includes the effect of the torsional-flexural buckling mode of failure is proposed. For ready use of designers, the factored axial compressive resistances of schifflerized angles are tabulated for both the present and proposed design methods. Key words: buckling, compressive resistance, design criteria, schifflerized angles, stability, standards, steel, struts, towers, guyed towers.

Emotional design is one of the most important methods in modern product design. It was highlighted after Donald A. Norman published his book Emotional design: why we love (or hate) everyday things. Emotional design addresses people’s needs and hopes which is in the center of the development of product design and product technology. Due to the lack of strong theoretical basis and quantitative analysis, many products can’t reach the goal of their designers with Emotional feelings, nor can consumer’s emotional understandings be similar to the designers’ emotional expectations. This paper analyzes the concept of emotional design and some difficulties which designers must to be faced in their emotional designing works, discusses on product shape design according to emotional design. On this basis, the Kansei engineering and emotional design methods are described in details.
