Talking about form and function in the architecture, two major traditions in design are always inevitable. They are two methods of architectural design: the first one is used by Beaux-Art system which takes form and order as the core; the second one is of Bauhuas system which focuses on function. Architecture is closely related to the interior, so are there also two design methods in the field of interior design? Through analysis of interior design textbooks in different academies, it was found that most existing design methods are based on function. Function-based design methods have a series of operable standard methods for function, but also have the problem of high level of functional logic and low level of formal logic. Does interior design also have a design approach starting from form and order and unifying function logic and formal logic? By transplanting the “kit-of-parts approach” in architectural design into interior design, applying the two design methods in undergraduate course of environmental design and comparing the two course design results, it was verified in this paper which design method is easier to balance form and function in basic design course.

Abstract A major claim in the constructionist approach to language acquisition is that grammar is learned by pairings of form and function. In this study we test this claim by examining how L2 learners of Mandarin Chinese acquire the bei passive construction, a construction that is associated with the meaning of adversity. Our goal is to find out whether L2 learners make the association between the passive and adversity. Participants performed a sentence choice task under four conditions: an adversative context with an adversative verb, an adversative context with a neutral verb, a neutral context with a neutral verb and a positive context with a neutral verb. In each context participants were asked to select either the bei passive construction or its active counterpart. We found that high-level learners consistently chose the bei passive significantly more in adversative contexts than in non-adversative contexts regardless of the connotations of the verbs, while low-level learners made the distinction half of the time. In addition, while low-level learners did not yet associate adversity with the form of the construction, high-level learners did. We conclude that L2 learners do learn the bei passive construction as a form-meaning pair. The constructionist approach is supported.

ABSTRACT Aim: To describe an approach for the diagnosis and management of patients presenting with crooked nose. Background Patients with crooked nose suffer from functional ailments, most significant nasal obstruction, as well as esthetic concerns which may impact their self-image as well as others’ perception of them. As such, management of the crooked nose is an especially challenging task in that it demands careful attention to both nasal function and appearance. There are a plethora of surgical techniques which may be utilized, and the surgeon's approach must be tailored to each individual patient's presentation. Technique Accurate diagnosis is imperative for a successful outcome and relies on a thorough history and careful physical examination. Surgical intervention may be addressed by either an endonasal or open approach based on the location and severity of the deformity. It is helpful to break down the nose in vertical thirds when planning your surgical approach. Different techniques are used to address the upper third comprising the nasal bones, middle third composed of the upper lateral cartilages and septum, and the lower third composed of the lower lateral cartilages and caudal septum. Conclusion Management of the crooked nose is a technically challenging endeavor that highlights the need to address both form and function for a successful outcome. Effective treatment can significantly improve a patient's quality of life leading to a high level of satisfaction for both the patient and the surgeon. There are limited curricular options for medical students to engage in art-making during their training. Yet, it is known that art-making confers a variety of benefits related to learning. This qualitative study utilises a visual methodology to explore students’ art-making in the context of the cardiovascular sciences. The existence of a multiyear repository of medical/dental student generated, cardiac-inspired art, collected over 6 years, provided the opportunity to explore the nature of the art made. The aim was to categorise the art produced, as well as the depth and breadth of understanding required to produce the art. The data set included a wide variety of titled art (paintings, photographs, sketches, sculptures, collages, poetry and music/dance). Systematic curation of the collection, across all media, yielded three main categories: anatomical renderings, physiology/pathophysiology renderings and kinesthetic creations (music/dance/tactile). Overall (medical and dental) student-generated art suggested a high level of content/process understanding, as illustrated by attention to scientific detail, integration of form and function as well as the sophisticated use of visual metaphor and word play. Dental students preferentially expressed their understanding of anatomy and physiology kinesthetically, creating art that required manual dexterity as well as through choreography and dance. Combining art-making with basic science curricular learning invited the medical and dentistry students to link their understanding to different modes of expression and a non-biomedical way of knowing. Subsequent incorporation of the student-generated cardiac art into lectures exposed the entire class to creative pictorial expressions of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology.

<div>In the Postmodern era there are diverse forms of architecture, which is also related to. structural and material technology that is developing so rapidly. The method used is the analysis of architectural theories to find the relationship between Function‐Form, whether: </div><div>1) The concept of Form follows Function; </div><div>2) The concept of Function follows Form; </div><div>3) The concept of Form and Function runs together. </div><div><br></div><div>The relation between the concept of Function and Form will result in the meaning of the architectural work itself. The conclusion is: in architectural design there is no exact rule whether the Function must follow the Form, or Form must follow the Function, or Function and Form run side by side, but the relationships between Function and Form merge into a single method towards the expression of architectural Form, so that this Function‐Form relationship will be interpreted by the observer towards the expression of the architectural creation itself. The findings in this study are to give architectural designers freedom regarding the relationship between Function‐Form. However, the most important thing from this relationship is that the meaning must be reflected in the expression of the form that corresponds to the relationship to be achieved. The benefit of this research is that architectural students can know more deeply the relationship between the Function‐Form that will be used in the design, and also for architect practitioners in designing the building.</div>

There has been a decline in the form and function of Sundanese vernacular architecture for large buildings due to the absence of artifacts in village houses. The data on palace or keraton and terraced roofs are only found in lontar and from outside observers in the XVI century. Meanwhile, the phenomenon of the bale nyungcung roof emerged on the mosque in the XVI-XIX centuries at West Java after disappearing for more or less two centuries. The reappearance makes it interesting to study this concept, especially with the focus on its relationship with the inner room of the mosque. This research was conducted on the Great Mosque spread in Sunda Tatar such as the West Java and Banten Provinces with buildings of Majalaya, Manonjaya, and Banten used as case studies. It was conducted qualitatively and interpretatively using the building anatomical theory to analyze the scope of shape and the Bale Nyungcung roof. The results showed the relationship between the roof and the inner space is a reflection of the adjustment in the mosque's basic reference with the Bale Nyungcung roof used as one of the Sundanese local building features.

Jelambar, Grogol Petamburan, with Jelambar Baru and Wijaya Kusuma, are one united district with a high density of residential population, that have hobby and habit on culinary business, that form many culinary centers and spread unevenly until Jelambar that caused Jelambar to have no culinary center like other districts have. Pawon Jelambar is designed to resolve issues of Jelambar that has no third place that needed by the district with a high density of population; also the low intensity of culinary. However, there are so many neglected small culinary businesses, because of many factors, one of them is a less strategic location. Pawon Jelambar wants to realize Jelambar’s unconsciously need of forming a place of culinary that integrated and has a clarity, by substitute all the small culinary businesses with Pawon Jelambar, with the purpose to increase culinary needs quality of Jelambar. This project is designed through designing stages as a method of design, such as understanding the district segment of Grogol Petamburan; arranging a diagram of issues of Jelambar and issues solving concept; design concept as the result of questionnaire answers analysis; zoning and space programs; analysis of project’s site determination; site analysis. All these analyses form building mass concepts; exterior and interior design; architectural details. The design result is Pawon Jelambar that uses the design concepts, such as green contemporary design, form and function runs together, and contextualism in responding site; with variants of culinary, mini market, culinary workshops, temporary exhibition, and food gallery, as the main architectural programs. Keywords: Architecture; Culinary; Jelambar; Pawon Jelambar; Third place AbstrakJelambar, Grogol Petamburan, bersama Jelambar Baru dan Wijaya Kusuma adalah satu-kesatuan kawasan padat penduduk hunian yang memiliki hobi dan kebiasaan berdagang kuliner, sehingga muncul beberapa pusat-pusat kuliner, namun penyebarannya tidak merata sampai Jelambar, sehingga Jelambar tidak memiliki sebuah pusat kuliner layaknya di titik kawasan lain. Proyek Pawon Jelambar dirancang untuk mengatasi isu-isu yang diangkat, yaitu tidak adanya third place yang menjadi kebutuhan padat penduduk Jelambar; dan intensitas rendah kuliner, namun banyak usaha kuliner kecil yang dibangun warga, tetapi banyak yang mati karena faktor tertentu, seperti lokasi yang kurang strategis. Pawon Jelambar ingin mengwujudkan keinginan tidak sadar Jelambar dalam membentuk sebuah tempat kuliner yang terintegrasi dan jelas, salah satunya dengan cara mensubstitusikan usaha-usaha kecil kuliner tersebut dengan Pawon Jelambar, yaitu untuk meningkatkan kualitas kebutuhan kuliner di kawasannya. Metode perancangan menggunakan serangkaian tahapan perancangan, yaitu pemahaman segmen kawasan Grogol Petamburan; penyusunan diagram isu kawasan dan konsep penyelesaian isu; konsep perancangan hasil analisis jawaban kuisioner; zoning dan program ruang; analisis pemilihan tapak; analisis tapak; menghasilkan konsep massa bangunan; desain eksterior, interior, dan detail arsitektur. Kesimpulan hasil perancangan adalah Pawon Jelambar yang menerapkan konsep green contemporary building design (sustainable architecture), form and function runs together, dan contextualism in responding site; dengan program utama tempat varian kuliner, mini market, pelatihan kuliner, eksibisi temporer dan food gallery.

Abstract Due to the expansive, time-consuming nature of risk analyses, it is important to be able to assign the minimization of risk (and, in general, optimization of resilience) to responsible teams that can work in parallel. However, while methods exist for minimization of risk in conventional design processes, research has not yet shown how it should be performed in a model-based design context in early design phase, when the design representation is relatively high-level and there are uncertainties in parameter values. This paper presents a value-driven design approach to minimize risk by decomposing the design, operational, and expected failure costs to individual functions in a system failure model. This process is demonstrated in a case study considering the redundancy of components to fulfill overall functions in an electric power system, where it is shown to increase design value significantly. An uncertainty-based process is additionally provided to enable the designer to test the sensitivity of the chosen design solution to uncertain parameter values. In this limited case study it is shown that the sensitivity of the choice to parameter value uncertainty is low, provided the range of uncertainty for each parameter is within a reasonable range. In situations like this, presented expected cost metrics provide meaningful information to justify system-architectural design decisions made on the basis of resilience.

<p class="Abstract"><em>Study in thematic architectural design studios for undergraduate students requires the participants to be able to convey the image and the meaning behind it through architectural design. Skills on comprehensive design process and utilization of appropriate methods are determine the success on implementing architectural meanings through design theme. This research aims to find exploring ideas methods which are effective be </em><em>used to</em><em> for generate thematic concepts. The research uses qualitative strategies to examine the processes and products outcomes of studio participant’s study that are controlled through design theories which studied by them. It was concluded that analogic design method is an effective category to be used, both analogy by sources inside architecture field and outside. Both analogy of form, meaning, and image. In addition, the level of diversity and depth understanding of design methods also influence the success of architectural design by themes.</em></p>

Exploration of stories in architectural discourse has yet to generate a structured discussion in the methods of its operations as part of a design endeavour. This issue of ARSNET presents a collection of articles that demonstrates a variety of everyday stories emerging from the experience of space and objects, and outlines the methodologies of their corresponding spatial operations. Through the stories of occupying, manoeuvring, navigating, dispersing, and sensing, this issue highlights various methods of spatial operations. With operations ranging from tracing as a way of revealing space, reduction as manoeuvring strategy, connecting the virtual and the real as a way of finding new meaning and use of space, and creating a spatial atmosphere based on trajectories of senses; the issue expands the discussion of stories-driven architectural design methods.
