Exploration of stories in architectural discourse has yet to generate a structured discussion in the methods of its operations as part of a design endeavour. This issue of ARSNET presents a collection of articles that demonstrates a variety of everyday stories emerging from the experience of space and objects, and outlines the methodologies of their corresponding spatial operations. Through the stories of occupying, manoeuvring, navigating, dispersing, and sensing, this issue highlights various methods of spatial operations. With operations ranging from tracing as a way of revealing space, reduction as manoeuvring strategy, connecting the virtual and the real as a way of finding new meaning and use of space, and creating a spatial atmosphere based on trajectories of senses; the issue expands the discussion of stories-driven architectural design methods.

<p class="Abstract"><em>Study in thematic architectural design studios for undergraduate students requires the participants to be able to convey the image and the meaning behind it through architectural design. Skills on comprehensive design process and utilization of appropriate methods are determine the success on implementing architectural meanings through design theme. This research aims to find exploring ideas methods which are effective be </em><em>used to</em><em> for generate thematic concepts. The research uses qualitative strategies to examine the processes and products outcomes of studio participant’s study that are controlled through design theories which studied by them. It was concluded that analogic design method is an effective category to be used, both analogy by sources inside architecture field and outside. Both analogy of form, meaning, and image. In addition, the level of diversity and depth understanding of design methods also influence the success of architectural design by themes.</em></p>

Talking about form and function in the architecture, two major traditions in design are always inevitable. They are two methods of architectural design: the first one is used by Beaux-Art system which takes form and order as the core; the second one is of Bauhuas system which focuses on function. Architecture is closely related to the interior, so are there also two design methods in the field of interior design? Through analysis of interior design textbooks in different academies, it was found that most existing design methods are based on function. Function-based design methods have a series of operable standard methods for function, but also have the problem of high level of functional logic and low level of formal logic. Does interior design also have a design approach starting from form and order and unifying function logic and formal logic? By transplanting the “kit-of-parts approach” in architectural design into interior design, applying the two design methods in undergraduate course of environmental design and comparing the two course design results, it was verified in this paper which design method is easier to balance form and function in basic design course.

The presence of time holds an important position in interior architectural practice and education. On theother hand, the presence of time challenges the stability and steadiness that framed the discipline. Furthermore, in interior architectural practice it is usually seen as a threat that should be either eliminatedor restricted. Rather than establishing defense mechanism against it, this paper argues that interiorarchitectural practice should be able to progress with time. By looking through undergraduate designstudio projects in Interior Architecture Program, Department of Architecture, Universitas Indonesia, this paper aims to addressed how the presence of time might affect, transform and even generate context specific interior architectural design methods that enables several dynamic forms of inhabitation. The out come of this study provides the opportunity for interior discipline to switch its focus, from the discipline that focuses on the aesthetic and constructional aspects, to the one that embraces the temporal aspectsof sociocultural conditions to enhance the wellbeing of its inhabitant.

This paper details further progress made in the PVRC project “Development of Improved Flange Design Method for the ASME VIII, Div.2 Rewrite Project” presented during the panel session on flange design at the 2006 PVP conference in Vancouver. The major areas of flange design improvement indicated by that project are examined and the suggested solutions for implementing the improved methods into the Code are discussed. Further analysis on aspects such as gasket creep and the use of leakage-based design has been conducted. Shortcomings in the proposed ASME flange design method (ASME BFJ) and current CEN flange design methods (EN-1591) are highlighted and methods for resolution of these issues are suggested.

The subject of the presented paper is the validation of a design method for HP and IP steam turbine stages. Common design processes have been operating with simplified design methods in order to quickly obtain feasible stage designs. Therefore, inaccuracies due to assumptions in the underlying methods have to be accepted. The focus of this work is to quantify the inaccuracy of a simplified design method compared to 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. Short computing time is very convenient in preliminary design; therefore, common design methods work with a large degree of simplification. The origin of the presented analysis is a mean line design process, dealing with repeating stage conditions. Two features of the preliminary design are the stage efficiency, based on loss correlations, and the mechanical strength, obtained by using the beam theory. Due to these simplifications, only a few input parameters are necessary to define the primal stage geometry and hence, the optimal design can easily be found. In addition, by using an implemented law to take the radial equilibrium into account, the appropriate twist of the blading can be defined. However, in comparison to the real radial distribution of flow angles, this method implies inaccuracies, especially in regions of secondary flow. In these regions, twisted blades, developed by using the simplified radial equilibrium, will be exposed to a three-dimensional flow, which is not considered in the design process. The analyzed design cases show that discrepancies at the hub and shroud section do exist, but have minor effects. Even the shroud section, with its thinner leading-edge, is not vulnerable to these unanticipated flow angles.

This paper develops the effectiveness-NTU design method for cooling towers. The definitions for effectiveness and NTU are totally consistent with the fundamental definitions used in heat exchanger design. Sample calculations are presented for counter and crossflow cooling towers. Using the proper definitions, a person competent in heat exchanger design can easily use the same basic method to design a cooling tower of counter, cross, or parallel flow configuration. The problems associated with the curvature of the saturated air enthalpy line are also treated. A “one-increment” design ignores the effect of this curvature. Increased precision can be obtained by dividing the cooling range into two or more increments. The standard effectiveness-NTU method is then used for each of the increments. Calculations are presented to define the error associated with different numbers of increments. This defines the number of increments required to attain a desired degree of precision. The authors also summarize the LMED method introduced by Berman, and show that this is totally consistent with the effectiveness-NTU method. Hence, using proper and consistent terms, heat exchanger designers are shown how to use either the standard LMED or effectiveness-NTU design methods to design cooling towers.

Aim: Evolution process in information and communication technologies, architectural design and therefore in the field of architecture; It goes from product representation and communication use, which can be modeled in the computer environment, to the processing of data, information and information, to support creativity and decision making, an activity specific to human mental processes. In this process, many computational design methods have been developed that play an important role in contemporary design practices and guide the change of design culture in recent years. The top aim in this study presented; It is the evaluation of the methods developed in the field of computational design through the life cycle model. Method: At the point of investigating the spread and usage of the design methods included in the study within the sample area, bibliometric analysis, and content analysis methods, which are used to evaluate scientific studies, was used to draw repeatable and valid results regarding the content of the examined text. Results: The study shows that the most published design methods in the computational design are simulation-based design, structure information modeling, shape grammars, and genetic algorithms, respectively. In addition, it is determined that the most preferred international congress in this field is eCAADe. According to the evaluation of the total number of publications in this field, the contribution of Turkish researchers to the field was found to be 3%. Conclusion: This study evaluated when the upper scale, which are related to computational design methods in Turkey, we can conclude that there is insufficient scientific studies. In order to be able to use the rapidly developing computational design tools more effectively, to improve the computational design ability and to reflect the education process in the design process, it is important to have a voice in the architecture of the future.

This paper discusses on attitude control of a quadcopter unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in real time application. Newton-Euler equation is used to derive the model of system and the model characteristic is analyzed. The paper describes the controller design method for the hovering control of UAV automatic vertical take-off system. In order to take-off the quadcopter and stable the altitude, PID controller has been designed. The scope of study is to develop an altitude controller of the vertical take-off as realistic as possible. The quadcopter flight system has nonlinear characteristics. A simulation is conducted to test and analyze the control performance of the quadcopter model. The simulation was conducted by using Mat-lab Simulink. On the other hand, for the real time application, the PCI-1711 data acquisition card is used as an interface for controller design which routes from Simulink to hardware. This study showed the controller designs are implemented and tuned to the real system using Real Time Windows Target approach by Mat-Lab Simulink.

A fundamental premise on environmental and behavioral fields involves assumptions about the systematic interrelationships between architecture and patterns of human behavior. The case study conducted was to confirm the needs of specific design methodology in relations to the area of Perception and Human Behavior. The research focused to the extent to which Office Space Performance gives impact on Employee Productivity and Satisfaction. Following that, It was also seen how those affect the behavior of coping. The findings show that there is a significant impact of Spaces’ Performances on Space Satisfaction. Further, there is a significant impact of Space Satisfaction on Coping Behavior and also a significant impact of Spaces’ Performances against Coping behavior. Humanist architecture with architectural behavior approach is required as a Concept of Planning and Architectural Design in the Future. A New Guidelines for Planning and Architectural Design Method for Architectural Design with Behavior concerns is proposed.
