The article presents the results of a sociological study of the attitude of the Karachay-Cherkessia Republic population to the essential components of the ecological situation. The significance of the ecological factor of the region as the basis for socio-cultural development and modernization of the territory of the republic is determined. A literature review shows the importance of such studies in regions with an extreme environmental situation and in regions traditionally considered to be prosperous and even resort areas. For such territories, the nature and absence of air and water pollution are a possible growth point, an attractive factor for forming tourist complexes. The development of tourism infrastructure and a competent media campaign will attract investors’ funds and create prerequisites for increasing tourist flows. Analysis of the survey results showed that the republic’s population as a whole positively evaluates the environmental situation, which is an additional condition for the success of the modernization process in the region.

The Battle of Lepanto, celebrated as the greatest triumph of Christendom over its Ottoman enemy, was soon transformed into a powerful myth through a vast media campaign. Lepanto – or rather, the varied storytelling and the many visual representations that contributed to shape the perception of the battle in Christian Europe – is the main focus of this book. In a broader perspective, Lepanto and Beyond also gathers reflections on the construction of religious alterity and offers analyses of specific case studies taken from different fields, investigating the figure of the Muslim captive in reality, artistic depiction, and literature. With different themes related to the Republic of Genoa, the authors also aim to redress a perceived imbalance and to restore the important role of the Genoese in the general scholarly discussion on Lepanto and its images.

Under the "weak state" regime of modern China, it was difficult for the country’s modernization process to develop without the effective intervention of a centralized state. In the process of government governance, absorbing social organizations and civil forces as agents had proved to be an effective method. Beiyang government’s governance strategy of ‘using agents to regulate agents’ in the documentary railway billing business could be regarded as typical of the diversity of government management. Qing Dynasty, government departments were not directly responsible for railway freight for various reasons, instead, they allowed railway transshipment companies to act as agents for freight management. Then transshipment companies gradually became an obstacle to Beiyang government’s reform on freight transport. However, under the Republic of China, the new-style bank discovered a benign opportunity to develop documentary railway billing service and created a bottom-up institutional reform model. Through the service, the bank became the new agent for the supervision of the transshipment company, which not only regulated the operation, but also forced railroad bureaus in the Yangzi Delta to be primarily responsible for railway freight. The Central Ministry of Transportation of Beiyang Government decided to promote this agency governance model and billing service nationwide. In the Republic of Serbia, education reforms have been implemented since 2000 with the aim of harmonizing this important field of society with the so-called European Education Area. The whole range of changes lawfully adopted and applied in practice at all levels of institutionalized education is mainly directed towards the standardization and unification of "domestic" education with the educational paradigms of a neoliberal society. Maintaining the continuity of cultural development and the formation of cultural identity are important issues for overall social development, and they are not given proper attention in the education strategy. In addition to that, the institutional preparation of future teachers does not sufficiently focus on this issue. In this paper we consider: (1) the normative framework that regulates the field of primary education and the formation of cultural identity in the Republic of Serbia, (2) the factors influencing the process of training future teachers for the formation of cultural identity and (3) the teachers’ competencies as a support to the formation of the cultural identity of younger school-age children. The importance of the harmonization of the basic guidelines of the normative framework regulating primary education and the formation of cultural identity with the basic intentions of preparing future teachers is emphasized. Especially from the perspective of the role of teachers in the process of establishing and preserving the cultural identity of generations reaching compulsory primary education in the context of intergenerational transmission of culture, cultural patterns and values. At the same time, the paper emphasizes the insufficient presence of content in the education of future teachers that would adequately prepare them for understanding the complex problem of forming a cultural identity. The authors point out the importance of the groundedness of future teachers’ preparation in terms of their academic knowledge of society, history and culture. The aim of the paper is to emphasize the importance of developing teachers’ competencies necessary for understanding identity issues and forming a cultural identity. The paper employs the descriptive-analytical method.

The aim of the research is to achieve a conclusion what is the level of the reporting practice on intangible assets in two countries - in the Republic of Serbia and in the Republic of Slovenia trough a comparative descriptive statistics. Consolidated financial statements of listed companies in these two countries were used from the Belgrade Stock Exchange (Serbia) and the Ljubljana Stock Exchange (Slovenia). The reason for the use of consolidated financial statements lies in the fact that they can contain unconsolidated intangible assets already recognized in the separate financial statements of the companies included in the group, as well as internally generated intangible assets that meet the conditions for recognition in a business combination (including Goodwill). The general assessment is that the survey results indicate a very low level of reporting practice of intangible assets in Serbia and relatively satisfactory level of reporting practice in Slovenia. Individual results are given in the fourth part of the paper.

The main purpose of the article is to identify the features of the sociological study of «folk» Islam. The article shows the differences between sociological approaches to the study of this phenomenon from ethnographic, historical and philosophical ones. The analysis of the concepts of «folk» Islam, mass religious consciousness, religiosity of ordinary believers, religiousness of the population shows that they are not identical and have independent significance for the researcher. The text of the article shows the differences in the meaning of these concepts. The author, basing on the data of sociological surveys, interprets the features of «folk» Islam, which are not identical to the "normative", bookish Islam. This kind of attitude of religious people, not being fully consistent with the principles of the "normative" Islam, creates a positive predisposition in the sphere of mass religious consciousness to tolerant attitude toward representatives of different cultures and worldviews. The opinion polls also showed that there are some components of pagan beliefs in the religious consciousness of followers of "folk" Islam. Data comparison of opinion polls by ethnic groups suggests that «folk» Islam among representatives of different ethnic groups of the Republic of Daghestan does not have principle differences from the general Daghestan indicators of such kind. Sociological surveys show that, despite some inconsistency regards the provisions of the "normative" Islam, in "folk" Islam, the basic values of the Islamic religion are understood and preserved in accordance with universal human values. The study shows that "folk" Islam has a high adaptive potential to the conditions of globalization processes. This adaptation, as a rule, does not correspond to Islamic normativity.

The article considers the probability of the intensity of the erosion process and the prerequisites for its mitigation and control. The results of the research prove that soil erosion is based on natural and anthropogenic factors. The main objectives of the study were to determine the amount and level of development of worn and erosion-prone soils in the foothills of the country, where it is very difficult to develop on the slope soils of Upper Shirvani. Therefore, in this connection, the tasks are solved, taking into account the requirements of preserving the ecological situation in the example of the Shamakhi district of the Upper Shirvan zone of the Republic of Azerbaijan, where the areas of its potential danger are identified and the preconditions for its prevention are given.

Turkey is fully engaged in its “hydraulic mission,” very extensively and rapidly “developing” water resources throughout its territory. The extensive hydraulic development attempts conducted by the Turkish government create local, national, inter-state, and transnational contestations among the different interest groups. A great deal of scholarly literature has analyzed the rationale behind Turkey's massive-scale hydraulic development. While some studies link Turkey's hydraulic mission to its energy and food security, others highlight the importance of domestic conflicts, as in the case of the Kurdish issue in the southeast. However, few works examine the relationship between hydraulic development and state- and nation-making processes in the early period of the republic. This paper seeks to analyze the role of hydraulic development in state- and nation-making in the context of Turkey by looking at the institutional documents published by official authorities and speeches made by key politicians. Drawing mainly upon the theory of water nationalism and its related conceptual frameworks, this study argues that hydraulic development has formed one of the important components of the modernization process in Turkey, thereby playing a significant role in its state- and nation-making processes.

The article presents the results of a sociological study conducted with the questionnaire of 385 pharmacy customers from different regions of the Republic of Belarus aged over 60 using Kano model. The respondents consistently expressed their attitude to the presence and absence of 13 characteristics (parameters) effecting the performance of pharmacies. The purpose of this study is to assess the loyalty of elderly customers to the pharmacy using Kano model. The potentials of elderly customers’ satisfaction and dissatisfaction with the work of pharmacies are calculated. The same parameter was revealed to have a different effect on the potential of satisfaction and dissatisfaction of pharmacy elderly customers. The distribution of the parameters studied into 4 quadrants allowed to determine mandatory characteristics of the pharmacy (availability of a wide range of products, competence of pharmaceutical workers; provision of the customers with detailed information about the purchased product), linear (location of the pharmacy, convenient schedule of its work, rational pricing policy, discount availability, informative and esthetic design of shop windows, benevolence of pharmaceutical workers) and indifferent ones (availability of car parking near the pharmacy, advertising items in the pharmacy, ability to get additional services in the pharmacy, modern technologies for population service). Attractive parameters were not set. The design of shop windows is at the border edge of mandatory and one-dimensional characteristics intersection. To attract customers and increase their loyalty to the pharmacy it is necessary to ensure availability of mandatory and to develop the category of linear characteristics.
