Asphalt pavement is widely used at home and abroad because of its advantages of comfortable driving, convenient maintenance, short construction period, etc. Asphalt becomes brittle and is cracked in winter. Gannan is located in the plateau, belonging to plateau climate, low year-round temperature, often wind and rain, day and night temperature difference, strong sunlight. Therefore, the asphalt was selected with high temperature stability and low temperature ductility. The KLMY90# asphalt and its mixture were studied for the technical properties. The results showed: the content of saturates and aromatic components reduced at aging temperature; the saturated and aromatic content decreased at aging time; the saturated content decreased slowly than the content of aromatic content as the aging time decreasing; the dynamic stability increased with the asphalt-aggregate ratio; the asphalt mixture had superior performance, strong water resistance. The KLMY90# asphalt and its mixture were more suitable for paving roads for Gannan.

As the construction and development of highway need high performance of road materials, the conventional asphalt mixture is difficult to meet the requirements. To save energy, the paper researches into adjusting agent, asphalt modification, fiber and rubber powder, analyzes performance characteristics of different adding methods, adding materials and adding quantities through comparative and experimental analysis, and obtains superior high temperature stability and low temperature stability of asphalt mixture with adjusting agent compared with modified asphalt mixture, which explores a new idea for the application of waste materials in highway construction.

The high temperature stability of AC-16, AC-13, AC-20 under specimen thickness of 5cm and 6cm is studied through indoor asphalt mixture high rutting test, Through comparison and analysis about experimental data, it is found that the stability of AC-16, AC-13, AC-20 asphalt mixture at high- temperature decreases in turn. It is shown that thickness changes did not affect the change trend of the high temperature stability under gradation change, and the stability of AC-16 at high-temperature is the best, the AC-13 is second and the AC-20 is less.

In order to discuss the effect of the basalt fiber on reinforcing pavement performance of asphalt mixtures, the optimum dosage of asphalt and fibers were studied by the method of Marshall test and rut test firstly. Then pavement performances of basalt fiber-modified asphalt mixtures were investigated through tests of high temperature stability, water stability and low temperature crack resistance, and compared with that of polyester fiber, xylogen fiber and control mixture. The testing results showed that the pavement performance of fiber-modified asphalt mixture are improved and optimized comparing with control asphalt mixture, and the performance of basalt fiber-modified asphalt mixture with best composition were excelled than those of polyester fiber and xylogen fiber.

Excessive usage of non-renewable natural resources and massive construction wastes put pressure on the environment. Steel slags, the main waste material from the metal industry, are normally added in asphalt concrete to replace traditional aggregate. In addition, as a typical microwave absorber, steel slag has the potential to transfer microwave energy into heat, thus increasing the limited self-healing ability of asphalt mixture. This paper aims to investigate the microwave absorption potentials of steel slag and the effect of its addition on road performance. The magnetic parameters obtained from a microwave vector network analyzer were used to estimate the potential use of steel slag as microwave absorber to heal cracks. Meanwhile, the initial self-healing temperature was further discussed according to the frequency sweeping results. The obvious porous structure of steel slag observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) had important impacts on the road performance of asphalt mixtures. Steel slag presented a worse effect on low-temperature crack resistance and water stability, while high-temperature stability can be remarkably enhanced when the substitution of steel slag was 60% by volume with the particle size of 4.75–9.5 mm. Overall, the sustainability of asphalt mixtures incorporating steel slag can be promoted due to its excellent mechanical and microwave absorption properties.

Fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture has been widely used in pavement engineering to not only prevent asphalt binder leakage but also improve engineering properties of asphalt mixture. However, the research on three key parameters, namely fiber type, fiber length, and fiber content, which significantly affect the performance of fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture, have seldom been conducted systematically. To determine these three key parameters in the support of the application of fibers in mixture scientifically, three commonly used fibers were selected, basalt fiber, polyester fiber, and lignin fiber, and the testing on fibers, fiber-reinforced asphalt binders, and fiber-reinforced asphalt mixtures was conducted afterwards. The results showed: the favorable fiber type was basalt fiber; the favorable basalt fiber length was 6mm; the engineering properties including high temperature stability, low temperature crack resistance, and water susceptibility were clearly improved by the added basalt fiber, and the optimum basalt fiber content was 0.4 wt.%. The obtained results may be valuable from a practical point of view to engineers and practitioners.

The energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission of asphalt pavement have become a very serious global problem. The high-temperature stability and durability of polyurethane (PU) are very good. It is studied as an alternative binder for asphalt recently. However, the strength-forming mechanism and the mixture structure of the PU mixture are different from the asphalt mixture. This work explored the design and performance evaluation of the PU mixture. The PU content of mixtures was determined by the creep slope (K), tensile strength ratios (TSR), immersion Cantabro loss (ICL), and the volume of air voids (VV) to ensure better water stability. The high- and low-temperature stability, water stability, dynamic mechanical property, and sustainability of the PU mixture were evaluated and compared with those of the stone matrix asphalt mixture (SMA). The test results showed that the dynamic stability and bending strain of the PU mixture were about 7.5 and 2.3 times of SMA. The adhesion level of PU and the basalt aggregate was one level greater than the limestone, and basalt aggregates were proposed to use in the PU mixture to improve water stability. Although the initial TSR and ICL of PU mixture were lower, the long-term values were higher; the PUM had better long-term water damage resistance. The dynamic modulus and phase angles (φ) of the PU mixture were much higher. The energy consumption and CO2 emission of the PU mixture were lower than those of SMA. Therefore, the cold-mixed PU mixture is a sustainable material with excellent performance and can be used as a substitute for asphalt mixture.

Fiber asphalt concrete has been more and more widely used in highway construction. For analyzing high and low temperature performance of fiber asphalt mixture, rheological properties of fiber asphalt mortar were studied through indoor test. Impact of Rheological properties of the fiber asphalt mortar on high temperature and low temperature properties of asphalt mixture was analyzed. Results showed that the larger fiber content was, the better performance of asphalt mixture's high temperature stability, fiber asphalt mortar rut factor and rutting tests results of asphalt mixture were linear correlation, reflecting the high temperature performance of asphalt mixture; With the increase of fiber content, variation of stiffness modulus, creep rate indicators and mixture low temperature performance was consistent, and rheological properties of fiber asphalt mortar could characterize low temperature performance of asphalt mixture.

Adding sulphur dilution asphalt modifier SEAM to asphalt mixture is not only a modifier of asphalt mixture, but also an additive of asphalt mixture. When the modifier is added into the asphalt mixture, the road performance of the asphalt mixture can be improved. This paper studies SEAM modified asphalt mixture the Marshall property index, temperature stability, Water stability and fatigue feature in the Laboratory. On the based of the result of the experiment and analysis, SEAM can improve the high temperature stability, Water stability and fatigue feature. But the low temperature stability can’t improve.
