This paper is focusing on the geo-disasters induced by the 2018 Hokkaido Iburi-tobu earthquake in Japan and the 2018 Sulawesi earthquake in Indonesia. The Hokkaido Iburi-tobu earthquake occurred at east of Iburi region in Hokkaido, Japan on September 6th, 2018. Tremendous number of landslides occurred in the mountain areas at Iburi region. Uplift and sinking of road and inclination of houses were caused by liquefaction in the south eastern part of Sapporo city. The Sulawesi earthquake happened at Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia on September 28th 2018. The ground displacement triggered by the fault movement caused damage to roads and houses. The large scale ground flows induced by liquefaction occurred in some different sites. This paper reviews the damage induced by the geo-disasters and considers the lessoned learnt from the damaging earthquakes happened in 2018.

Abstract. Characteristics of thermally induced flow, namely the sea breeze, are investigated along the south-eastern Adriatic. The chosen period 24–25 April 2006 favoured sea breeze development and simultaneously allowed a comparison of the large-scale wind influence (north-westerly wind versus south-easterly wind) and the complex terrain on the local circulations. Particular attention is paid to the small-scale formation of the wind field, convergence zones (CZs), channelling flows and small scale eddies, especially in the vicinity of two airports in the central part of south-eastern Adriatic. The results are based on wind measurements (from meteorological surface stations, radiosoundings, satellite data and sodar data) and further supplemented by model data at fine grid spacing. This study shows the formation of numerous irregular daytime and nighttime CZs, which occurred along the coastline in the lee of mountains and over the larger, elongated islands. The results show that the above mentioned airports are surrounded by daytime CZ formations within the lowermost 1000 m and associated updrafts of 1 m s−1, especially if CZs are maintained by the north-westerly large-scale winds. Whereas the daytime CZ was generated due to merged sea breezes, the weaker and shallower nighttime CZs were formed by wind convergence of the seaward breezes, and significantly modified by the large-scale flow of the topography (e.g., accelerated flow in the sea channels and substantial swirled flows around the islands). The passes between the coastal mountain peaks changed the inflow penetration, provoking the increase in wind speed of the channelled flow. The strongest sea breeze channelling was observed above the valley of the Neretva River, where the onshore flow reached 40 km inland with a strength of 8 m s−1, and the highly asymmetric offshore part was confined within the sea channel.

Abstract. We present a descriptive overview of the meteorology in the south eastern Subtropical Pacific during the VOCALS-REx intensive observations campaign, which took place in October and November 2008. We provide a summary of the day-to-day meteorological and cloud conditions. Our main aim is to provide some broader spatial and temporal meteorological context for the measurements made during VOCALS-REx, attempting to link the large-scale conditions of the atmospheric circulation with the locally observed conditions, also with a view of estimating the representativity of the specific season that was sampled by VOCALS-REx.

AbstractThe Sulawesi earthquake with a moment magnitude of Mw 7.5 struck the Central Sulawesi region of the Sulawesi Island, Indonesia, on September 28, 2018. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the mountainous region of Donggala Regency, in the neck of the Minahasa Peninsula in the Central Sulawesi Province of Indonesia. Although the epicenter was located in Donggala Regency, the greatest devastating effects were observed about 70 km south of the epicenter in the Palu Valley. The event was the first of its kind to cause large-scale flowslides simultaneously at four key locations such as Balaroa, Petobo, Jono Oge, and Sibalaya with extensive ground displacements ranging from several hundred meters to more than 1 km. This article reviews the field observations of geotechnical failures and infrastructure damage caused by liquefaction resulting from the shallow strike-slip earthquake at Palu City, Donggala Regency, and Sigi Regency. A geo-spatial analysis was performed on data collected from aerial drone imagery, along with portable dynamic cone penetration testing (PDCPT) in the field. The investigation revealed a highly stratified ground with alternating soil layers of varying permeability and very low bearing resistance at shallow depths. The investigation also helped in assessing the extent of damage caused by geotechnical failure to the residential infrastructures, irrigation structures, and roads. Graphical Abstract

We have studied the Cretaceous and Paleogene flysch of the Duklya-Chornohora, Burkut, Rakhiv, Marmarosh and Pieniny covers that in the south-eastern sector of the Ukrainian Carpathians near the Romanian border (Hutsulian segment) distinguish themselves by very inclined overthrust. Spatially the given tectonic units are in so-called hydrothermal fluid, unfavourable on the whole as to the presence of hydrocarbons in it on a large scale. But, within its limits the plots, small in area, with hydrocarbon prevalence in the gas composition are distinguished. Prospects for gas presence in the region should be connected with those of them that spatially are drown to the Transcarpathian trough. One such section is the Velikobychkovk sector of the Monastyretsky sub-cover, where it is proposed to lay a parametric well 1-Velikiy Bychkov, in order to reveal the possible para-autochthon of the Vezhany sub-cover and the Paleogene of the Dilovetsky sub-cover. In addition, according to seismic data, a significant rise in the pre-flysch base is forecast in this section of the Carpathians under the Marmarosh cover. The roof of this foundation at the location of the recommended well 1-Velikiy Bychkov may be at a depth of 5000–5500 m. It may be represented by the youngest deposits of the pre-Alpine complex – the Triassic strata, industrially oil and gas saturated in the neighboring countries.

<p>The reconstruction of paleoglaciers and specifically the calculation of their equilibrium line altitude (ELA) is an important source of quantitative paleoclimatic information in mountainous regions. During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), the prealpine massifs in the south-eastern part of the Alpine chain (Venetian Prealps, Carnic Prealps and Julian Prealps) hosted several small valley glaciers and local ice caps that were isolated from the larger ice-streams occupying the major valleys. Because of their small size and independent dynamics these glaciers can be considered as excellent indicators of local climatic conditions. Although this potential has long been recognised and the sediments and landforms related to these glaciations have been mapped in a few areas, a regional perspective on this type of glaciation is still lacking. This is primarily due to the wide range of methods of ELA reconstructions that has been applied historically, which makes a solid comparison between different localities difficult.</p><p>Here, we present a detailed re-evaluation of local LGM glaciation in the south-eastern Alps based on a large-scale survey of remote sensing data and targeted field work at selected localities. Recently developed GIS tools were applied for the reconstruction of paleoglacier geometries and ELAs (Pellitero et al. 2015, 2016). The obtained values are used both to discuss regional climatic patterns during the LGM and site-specific topographic factors. A specific focus is set on the Monte Cavallo group, where glacial sediments from the LGM are covering a thick sequence of interstadial lacustrine deposits. A set of new radiocarbon dates from this succession provides a first chronological control on the onset of glacier expansion in this part of the Alpine chain.</p><p> </p><p>References:</p><p>Pellitero, R. et al. 2015. AbstractFlights over open water can be challenging for migrating songbirds. Despite numerous observations of songbirds migrating over remote islands, virtually nothing is known about the proportion of songbirds risking to fly offshore rather than to follow the coastline. By means of large-scale automated radio-telemetry, we individually tracked songbirds during their autumn migration through the German Bight area in the south-eastern North Sea. Our tracking network facilitated the recording of movement patterns over the bay and, for the first time, the estimation of the proportions of individuals embarking on offshore flights from their coastal stopover sites. Our data are consistent with previous observations of decreasing migration densities from nearshore to offshore, i.e. from east to west in autumn. Still, we revealed a considerable proportion of 25% of birds flying offshore. The tendency to fly offshore decreased from west to south migrants, which is in line with optimal bird migration theory. Among south-west migrating species, which also comprise the vast majority of songbird species migrating through the German Bight area, thrushes showed the highest proportions of offshore flights. Considering the recent and ongoing increase of artificial offshore structures, our results suggest that some species or species groups might especially face an increased risk of being negatively affected.

Abstract In the south-eastern Eastern Alps, the Reifnitz tonalite intruded into the Austroalpine metamorphic basement of the Wörthersee half-window exposed north of the Sarmatian–Pliocene flexural Klagenfurt basin. The Reifnitz tonalite is dated for the first time, and yields a laser ICP-MS U–Pb zircon age of 30.72±0.30 Ma. The (U–Th–Sm)/He apatite age of the tonalite is 27.6 ± 1.8 Ma implying rapid Late Oligocene cooling of the tonalite to ca. 60 °C. The Reifnitz tonalite intruded into a retrogressed amphibolite-grade metamorphic basement with a metamorphic overprint of Cretaceous age (40Ar/39Ar white mica plateau age of 90.7 ± 1.6 Ma). This fact indicates that pervasive Alpine metamorphism of Cretaceous age extends southwards almost up to the Periadriatic fault. Based on the exhumation and erosion history of the Reifnitz tonalite and the hosting Wörthersee half window formed by the Wörthersee anticline, the age of gentle folding of Austroalpine units in the south-eastern part of the Eastern Alps is likely of Oligocene age. North of the Wörthersee antiform, Upper Cretaceous–Eocene, Oligocene and Miocene sedimentary rocks of the Krappfeld basin are preserved in a gentle synform, suggesting that the top of the Krappfeld basin has always been near the Earth’s surface since the Late Cretaceous. The new data imply, therefore, that the Reifnitz tonalite is part of a post-30 Ma antiform, which was likely exhumed, uplifted and eroded in two steps. In the first step, which is dated to ca. 31–27 Ma, rapid cooling to ca. 60 °C and exhumation occurred in an E–W trending antiform, which formed as a result of a regional N–S compression. In the second step of the Sarmatian–Pliocene age a final exhumation occurred in the peripheral bulge in response to the lithospheric flexure in front of the overriding North Karawanken thrust sheet. The Klagenfurt basin developed as a flexural basin at the northern front of the North Karawanken, which represent a transpressive thrust sheet of a positive flower structure related to the final activity along the Periadriatic fault. In the Eastern Alps, on a large scale, the distribution of Periadriatic plutons and volcanics seems to monitor a northward or eastward shift of magmatic activity, with the main phase of intrusions ca. 30 Ma at the fault itself.

The results of research of green areas in localities Malorechenskoye and Rybachye (South-Eastern Crimea) are presented. Large-scale landscaping of the studied territory was carried out in the 60-80-ies of the XX century. Modern structure of green spaces is typical for coastal settlements – basically, these are parks of recreational complexes, with high concentration of diversity of trees and shrubs species. A historical park (the oldest one) in the South-Eastern Crimea (late 50s – early 60s of the XIXth century) is also located in Malorechenskoye. The researches made taxonomic, botanical-geographical and biomorphological analysis of dendroflora. The frequency of occurrence of species, the condition of plants, as well as the degree of their drought and frost were assessed. The studied dendroflora includes 106 species belonging to 75 genera from 43 families. The species diversity of trees and shrubs in Rybachye is higher than in Malorechenskoye (89 and 67, respectively). At the same time, 13 species are widely distributed in both settlements, the most numerous of which is Cupressus sempervirens. It was revealed that species of the Mediterranean floristic region predominate (31.1 %), and representatives of native Crimean flora take a significant place (34.9 %). The leading position in the biomorphological structure of the dendroflora belongs to deciduous trees (25.5 %), followed by deciduous and evergreen deciduous shrubs (19.8 % each), and coniferous trees (17.0 %). The species diversity of deciduous shrubs and coniferous trees is significantly higher in Rybachye than in Malorechenskoye. Most plants are adapted to local climatic conditions: 57.5 % of species are not damaged by drought, the rest suffer from it in different degrees; 78.3% of species are frost-resistant, others are periodically damaged by low temperatures and need better protected from frost and cold winds planting sites. The absolute majority of species (95.3 %) are in good condition. Plants Aesculus hippocastanum, Buxus balearica, B. sempervirens, Euonimus japonica are more or less affected by pests and diseases. Special attention should be paid to the preserve the historical park in Malorechenskoye and to give it a protected status.

<p>Natural geosystems of the south-eastern slope of the Greater Caucasus are genetically related to the large morphostructural units that constitute the territory, as well as to the aerodynamic condition of the lower layer of the troposphere. The study revealed that there are contradictions in the geosystems formation of various local morphostructures. Thus, the differentiation of geosystems may either be intensifi or weakened, depending on the height of mountain areas and ridges. The slope and direction of visibility of the area are the basic elements that play a decisive role in the shaping of structural and genetic features of the area in question. The article features the structural changes that are observed in natural geosystems based on the slope and direction of visibility maps and charts of the contemporary geosystems in the south-eastern slope of the Greater Caucasus. The research also features the infl of morphometric parameters of the relief on the agriculture development in the mountain geosystems of the south-eastern slope of the Greater Caucasus in GIS.<strong></strong></p>

Significance of protection of the meadow and grassland communities for maintenance the floristic diversity in the area of the south-eastern Silesian Upland (Poland)Variety of relief and geology of the south-eastern Silesian Upland results in richness and diversity of its vegetation. Wet meadows and xerothermic grasslands are one of its most valuable components. In their phytocoenoses many protected (27 in meadows and 22 in grasslands) and rare (25 and 34) species have been noted. Among them there are threatened species put on the "Red list of the vascular plants in Poland". A few species represent the mountain element. Some meadow and grassland phytocoenoses from the south-eastern part of the Silesian Upland are characterised by exceptionally high floristic richness. TheCirsietum rivularispatches have proved to be the richest among them. Large-scale cessation of usage caused that meadows and grasslands actually need urgent active protection here. This is the only chance of survival for many rare protected and threatened plants.
