There are conflicting reports regarding some fine structural details of arteries from several animal species. Buck denied the existence of a sub-endothelial space, while Karrer and Keech described a space of variable width which separates the endothelium from the underlying internal elastic lamina in aortas of aging rats and mice respectively.The present communication deals with the ultrastrueture of the interface between the endothelial cell layer and the internal elastic lamina as observed in carotid arteries from rabbits of varying ages.

An epithelial cell line, NPC/HK1, has recently been established from a biopsy specimen of a recurrent tumour of the nasopharynx which was histologically diagnosed as a moderately to well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. A definite decrease in the amount of tonofilaments and desmosomes in the NPC/HK1 cells during the cell line establishment was observed. The present communication reports on the fine structures of the NPC/HK1 cells heterotraneplanted in athymic nude mice.

The purpose in obtaining zone axis pattern map (zap map) from a given material is to provide a quick and reliable tool to identify cristaline phases, and crystallographic directions, even in small particles. Bend contours patterns and Kossel lines patterns maps from Zr single crystal in the [0001] direction have been presented previously. In the present communication convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) zap map of Zr will be shown. CBED patterns were obtained using a Philips microscope model EM300, which was set up to carry out this technique. Convergent objective upper pole piece for STEM and some electronic modifications in the lens circuits were required, furthermore the microscope was carefully cleaned and it was operated at a vacuum eminently good.CBED patterns in the Zr zap map consist of zero layer disks, showing fine details within them which correspond to intersecting set of higher order Laue zone (HOLZ) deficiency lines.

Studies of rotavirus particles in humans, monkeys and various non-primates with acute gastroenteritis have involved detection of virus in fecal material by electron microscopy. The EM techniques most commonly employed have been the conventional negative staining (Fig. 1) and immune aggregation (Fig. 2) procedures. Both methods are somewhat insensitive and can most reliably be applied to samples containing large quantities of virus either naturaLly or as a result of concentration by ultracentrifugation. The formation of immune complexes by specific antibody in the immune aggregation procedures confirms the rotavirus diagnosis, but the number of particles per given microscope field is effectively reduced by the aggregation process. In the present communication, we describe use of an on-grid immunoelectron microscopic technique in which rotavirus particles are mounted onto microscope grids that were pre-coated with specific antibody. The technique is a modification of a method originalLy introduced by Derrick (1) for studies of plant viruses.

The present communication describes the morpho-taxonomy of ten chlorophycean algae from Maipokhari lake, Ilam. They belong to eight genera viz. Scenedesmus (1), Cylindrocapsa (1), Netrium (2), Closterium (2), Euastrum (1), Cosmarium (1), Staurodesmus (1), and Staurastrum (1) under four families viz. Scenedesmaceae (1), Cylindrocapsaceae (1), Mesotaeniaceae (2), and Desmidiaceae (6). Background: Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a causative organism of tuberculosis, which is most deadly disease after cancer in a current decade. The development of multidrug and broadly drug- resistant strains making the tuberculosis problem more and more critical. In last 40 years, only one molecule is added to the treatment regimen. Generally, drug design and development programs are targeted proteins whose function is known to be essential to the bacterial cell. Objectives: Reported here are the development of 'S', 'N’ heterocycles as antimycobacterials targeting fatty acid biosynthesis. Material and Methods: In the present communication, rational development of anti-mycobacterial agent's targeting fatty acid biosynthesis has been done by integrating the pocket modelling and virtual analysis. Results: The identified potential 33 lead compounds were synthesized, characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods like IR, NMR spectroscopy and further screened for antimycobacterial activity using isoniazid as standard. All the designed compounds have shown profound antimycobacterial activity. Conclusion: In this present communication, we found that 3c, 3f, 3l and 4k molecules had expressive desirable biological activity and specific interactions with fatty acids. Further optimization of these leads is necessary for the development of potential antimycobacterial drug candidate having less side effects.

Anisotropy of mechanical properties, fatigue and fracture resistance of precipitation hardened CuCrZr alloy ultrafine (UFG) grained by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) is in focus of the present communication. Fracture toughness was estimated in terms of J-integral and the fatigue crack growth rate was quantified. It was found that although the estimated JIC-value appeared lower than that reported in the literature for a reference alloy, the ductility, fracture and crack growth resistance remained satisfactory after ECAP while the tensile strength and fatigue limit improved considerably. The stable crack growth rate did not differ very much for ECAP and reference conventional CuCrZr and no remarkable anisotropy in the stable crack growth was noticed.


The following investigation was commenced some years ago, at a time when the discussion as to the atomic weight of Radium raised the question as to the dependence on their atomic weights of the wave-lengths of corresponding spectral lines of different elements of the same group. The arguments were necessarily vague and unconvincing in the absence of any exact knowledge as to the connection of wave­-length with atomic weight, even supposing such connection existed. Our knowledge of series spectra is chiefly—one might say almost wholly—due to the sets of very exact measurements of Kayser and Runge, and of Runge and Paschen, supplemented by extensions to longer and shorter wave-lengths by Bergmann, Konen and Hagenbach, Lehmann, Ram age, and Saunders. These have been only quite recently added to by Paschen and by the remarkable extension of the Sodium Principal series up to 48 terms by Wood. A most valuable feature of Kayser’s work was the publication of possible errors of observation. This has rendered it possible to test with certainty whether any relation suggesting itself is true within limits of observational error or not. In fact, without this, the investigation, of which the present communication forms a first part, could not have been carried out. So far as the author knows, Saunders is the only other observer who has accompanied his observations with estimates of this kind. Others have given probable errors—practically estimates of the exactness with which they can repeat readings of that feature of a line which they take to be the centre—an estimate of little value for the present purpose. In deducing data from a set of lines it is thus possible to express their errors in terms of the original errors in the observations, and limits to the latter give limiting variations to the former. We therefore know with certainty what latitude in inferences is permissible, and are often enabled to say that such inference is not justifiable.

The experiments which form the subject of the present communication were carried out two years ago, and supplement results already published. A brief note of some of the results was read before the Society in June 1904, and was also read before the British Association Meeting at Cambridge in August of the same year.The previous paper discussed the effect of high temperature on the relation between electrical resistance and magnetization when the wire was magnetized longitudinally, that is, in the direction in which the resistance was measured.The present results have to do with the effect of high temperature on the relation between resistance and magnetization when the magnetization was transverse to the direction along which the resistance was measured.
