Noise is commonly known to have adverse health effects on residents in urban living environment. In the past, great focus has been placed on the impact of external traffic noise on residents’ health and the development of urban noise mapping. On the other hand, neighbourhood noise − a combination of noise generated from outside residences and noise generated from within residences − are also considered to be as detrimental as external traffic noise and are yet to be widely investigated. This paper focuses on the systematic review of studies assessing neighbourhood noise with the intention of determining the presence of architectural variables and methods of noise representation for micro-scale areas. 153 articles are retrieved from specific research databases and out of which 12 were considered to be relevant to the study. The results indicate that architectural variables present in the studies were mostly related to the analysis of external traffic noise and that representation of noise in analyses were rarely devised which highlights the need for further investigation in this area.

Background: Virtual reality (VR) experiences (through games and virtual environments) are increasingly being used in physical, cognitive, and psychological interventions. However, the impact of VR as an approach to rehabilitation is not fully understood, and its advantages over traditional rehabilitation techniques are yet to be established. Method: We present a systematic review which was conducted according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). During February and March of 2018, we conducted searches on PubMed (Medline), Virtual Health Library Search Portal databases (BVS), Web of Science (WOS), and Embase for all VR-related publications in the past 4 years (2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018). The keywords used in the search were “neurorehabilitation” AND “Virtual Reality” AND “devices.” Results: We summarize the literature which highlights that a range of effective VR approaches are available. Studies identified were conducted with poststroke patients, patients with cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, and other pathologies. Healthy populations have been used in the development and testing of VR approaches meant to be used in the future by people with neurological disorders. A range of benefits were associated with VR interventions, including improvement in motor functions, greater community participation, and improved psychological and cognitive function. Conclusions: The results from this review provide support for the use of VR as part of a neurorehabilitation program in maximizing recovery.

During more than six centuries of existence, Bacău benefited both from the favourable socio-economic and political context, and from the interrelationships with the other communities, from the harmonious combination of these two elements resulting both the growth and development of the locality and the position in the local and regional hierarchy. The main beneficiaries of the progress made were of course the inhabitants, the city representing a living environment for them, as well as the essential factor in the functional dynamics and in the urban landscape. Giving meaning to the past, we must recognize that each community that contributed to the development of Bacău has its own history, Bacău becoming the trustee of the communities ‘history entirety, which in perfect communion with Romanians defined the complex identity of the locality. The Jewish community is no exception, whose collaboration with Romanians for over two centuries has contributed to increasing the economic level of development of the locality since the second half of the 18th century.

This paper estimates how previous major pandemic events affected economic and gender inequalities in the short- to medium run. We consider the impact of six major pandemic episodes – H3N2 Flu (1968), SARS (2003), H1N1 Swine Flu (2009), MERS (2012), Ebola (2014), and Zika (2016) – on cross-country inequalities in a sample of up to 180 countries observed over 1950-2019. Results show that the past pandemics have moderately increased income inequality in the affected countries in the period of four to five years after the pandemic’s start. On the other hand, we do not find any robust negative impacts on wealth inequality. The results concerning gender inequality are less consistent, but we find some evidence of declining gender equality among the hardest hit countries, as well as of growing gender gaps in unemployment within the four years after the onset of the pandemic.

Recent decades have witnessed a growing awareness of the need to study the impact of the New World on the Old, instead of the other way about. Yet surprisingly little is known about the whereabouts of books on America, or of atlasses and maps of this new world, in the libraries of European intellectuals from, say, 1500 until 1700 (the same holds true, incidentally, for texts about Asia). A possible explanation for this state of affairs might be that it is easier, although difficult enough, to compile a reliable bibliography of printed sources on America, as the splendid European Americana amply proves, than to ascertain what books figured in private libraries which are no longer intact. Furthermore, research into the private libraries of the past is still a somewhat modest sector of the province of intellectual history, in spite of the fact that Mario Schiff's brilliant study of the Marqués de Santillana's library dates from 1905 and that Henri-Jean Martin's seminal works have been published since 1958.

Hernando de Soto's recent book, The Other Path, argues that capitalism has not failed in Peru and Latin America, rather, it has not been tried. Basing his case on the observation that Latin American economies are strangled by arcane policies and regulations, de Soto goes on to bolster his point by providing a fresh and powerful look at the undeniable reality of the large “informal,” and thus unregulated, economic sector in Peru. As with any such generalization, how strongly does its explanatory value remain when measured against specific events, over long periods of time? This article seeks just such a perspective. It examines the impact of such regulations as mining codes and mineral taxation on the efforts of Chilean copper entrepreneurs to compete worldwide in the nineteenth century. De Soto may be correct in his contention that today's highly regulated economies keep Latin Americans from being as productive as their resources justify, but to extend this view into the past ignores earlier productive accomplishments, as well as significant efforts at different times and places to cast off Latin America's mercantile legacy.

The impact of changes in the performed functions on the physiognomy of the port in Ustka The aim of the article is to present the impact of changes in the functions performed by the port in Ustka on its physiognomy. The functional analysis mainly covers the period of 2016-2019, while the analysis of the physiognomy was conducted for 2021. It was found that the basic trans-shipment function is played to a minimum extent in Ustka. The function of sea tourism is insufficiently realized (no yacht marina), and the function of passenger shipping is not performed. The function of recreational fishing and angling is still performed by the port, but to a lesser extent than in the past. There is no longer any production activity in the port area, although in the past it was carried out on a large scale. There is a chance that the port will develop a function related to the maintenance and operation of wind farms. On the other hand, the tourist function (gastronomy, hotels, etc.) and housing are strongly developing in the port. Introducing the latter function into the port was considered a mistake. Changes in functions result in changes to the port physiognomy. Industrial and trans-shipment facilities are disappearing and replaced with hotel, catering and residential facilities. However, these changes are long delayed.

The article presents the results of scientific research on the assessment of the acoustic characteristics of the interstate highway of the Central Caucasus, passing through the mountainous territory of the Republic of North Ossetia Alania in the residential area where the miners of the Sadon Lead-Zinc Plant live. A schematic diagram of the highway in the zone is shown, and a design diagram is given to determine the acoustic parameters of the impact of traffic noise on the habitat of the resident population. On the basis of the studies performed, the most effective design parameters of the acoustic shield are set, providing sanitary permissible sound pressure levels in apartments without additional sound insulation and in the zone of influence of roadside noise in the settlement at the maximum intensity of the traffic flow along the road. Recommendations on the effective operation of the acoustic shield and the method for estimating the noise factor in the mountain zone with a highly dissected relief are given.

Innovation by considering the impact to the ecological environment, known as eco-innovation, continues to receive increasing attention in at least the past two decades. This paper aims to provide an analysis on recent development of eco-innovation research in Indonesia and provide some potential avenues for future research. Analysis is carried out using systematic literature review (SLR) techniques to synthesize knowledge development of a scientific field in a structured, transparent, and reliable manner. The search was conducted on three academic databases, including Scopus, Google Scholar, and the local academic database of Garuda (<em>Garba Rujukan Digital</em>). Data analyzed using content analysis. The analysis shows that scholarly publication of eco-innovation research in Indonesia is still rare. The topics discussed can be categorized into several categories such as the driver of eco-innovation, R&amp;D for eco-innvation, eco-innovation performance, which addresses various types of eco-innovation and different level of analysis. Potential research avenues are then identified at the end of the paper. This is the first systematic review on eco-Innovation in Indonesia, and first combining systematic search strategy in the both local and international academic database.

Although the conference from which this Special Issue derives was convened by two prominent historians, this article is multi-disciplinary; both within and outside the boundaries of history. The purpose is to merge various ideas in different disciplines to argue that the study of Coastal Yorubaland as an important unit of analysis should, on the one hand, stand alone, and, on the other, be integrated into larger studies in all fields from Art to Zoology. For thousands of years, people have been living along the coast, experiencing interactions with the sea: they were shaped by the lagoon and sea, and they in turn shaped the coastline and waterways. The past of the coastal Yoruba people shapes their present, and this present will shape their future. In this article, I speak to the impact of the consciousness of history, the consciousness of the past, and the consciousness of self and identity on coastal Yorubaland.
