Interest in indigenous veld plants across Southern Africa is generating speculation on the potential market value of veld plant products. Researchers and entrepreneurs in Botswana have begun to explore the botanical resources of the Kalahari veld lands. These developments are attractive to the government of Botswana given national goals of rural development and economic diversification. Attention is turning to possible ways to increase supply, as wild gathering is unreliable and appears to be depleting wild stocks. In particular, domestication and cultivation are being considered. Indigenous plants may be able to avoid some technical constraints on agricultural development in Botswana. However, as explored in this interdisciplinary paper, there are several complications for potential cultivation in the Kalahari. The delicate ecosystem, issues of land access and commercialization, interplay with livestock, social effects of cash income and other changes, and concerns over market development and fair trade are issues that could seriously affect cultivation plans and yet are often overlooked in agrodevelopment studies. It is summarized that methods of management that better fit the natural and social context, such as communally managed gathering, should instead be considered when addressing the problem of overexploitation of wild veld plants.

In the past few years, a number of civil society coalitions have emerged in the illiberal city-state of Singapore. They are the unintended result of a controlled process of liberalization which was initiated by the government in the 1990s in response to growing demands for participation. In particular, the internet has contributed to a more assertive, independent and better organized civil society, which can be seen as a significant step in the process of political change in the city-state.

This paper is a study of research results that aims to explain the birth of local autonomy from the results of constitutional reform as a form of governance following the community's aspirations. In the past, the problem of the centralized government system did not provide opportunities for regions to regulate and manage their regional government. It was considered undemocratic and did not bring progress to the people in the regions. Therefore, significant changes to the government system in the most aspirational areas through local autonomy are needed. This study, using a normative juridical research method with a philosophical approach. The research results obtained an understanding of the existence of local autonomy as a form of constitutional reform, which is the aspiration of the will of the people in the regions. With the constitutional reform, the system has changed to become decentralized. It has a closer relationship with the people in the regions and can understand the needs of the lower classes. The constitution, with its amendments, can create a democratic system of government and ensure public participation in the life of the state.

Over the past decade, ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) has emerged from whisper-quiet corners of the Internet to become a bullhorn of speculation on the human sensorium. Many consider its sonically induced “tingling” to be an entirely novel, and potentially revolutionary, form of human corporeality—one surprisingly effective in combating the maladies of a digitally networked life: insomnia, anxiety, panic attacks, and depression. Complicating these claims, this article argues that ASMR is also neoliberal repackaging of what Marx called the reproduction of labor power. Units of these restorative “tingles” are exchanged for micro-units of attention, which YouTube converts to actual currency based on per-1,000-view equations. True to the claims of Silvia Federici and Leopoldina Fortunati, this reproductive labor remains largely the domain of women. From sweet-voiced receptionists to fawning sales clerks (both of whom are regularly role-played by ASMRtists), sonic labor has long been a force in greasing the gears of capital. That it plays a role in production is a matter that ASMRtists are often at pains to obscure. The second half of this article performs a close reading of what might be considered the very first ASMR film: Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles. Through this film, the exploitative dimensions of ASMR can be contrasted with its potential for creating protected spaces of financial independence and nonnormative corporeal practices.
