Towards the development of FLP-catalyzed hydrogenations of tertiary and secondary carboxylic amides

The development of the frustrated Lewis pair catalyzed hydrogenation of tertiary and secondary amides is reviewed. Detailed insight into our strategies in order to overcome challenges during the reaction development process is provided. Furthermore, the developed chemistry is extended to the hydrogenation of poly amides and trifluoroacetyl amides for the convenient introduction of trifluoro ethyl groups into organic molecules.

AbstractPrototyping is an essential activity in the early stages of product development. This activity can provide insight into the learning process that takes place during the implementation of an idea. It can also help to improve the design of a product. This information and the process are useful in design education as they can be used to enhance students' ability to prototype their ideas and develop creative solutions. To observe the activity of prototype development, we conducted a study on students participating in a 7-week course: Principles of Digital Fabrication. During the course, eight teams made prototypes and shared their weekly developments via internet blog posts. The posts contained prototype pictures, descriptions of their ideas, and reflections on activities. The blog documentation of the prototypes developed by the students was done without the researchers' intervention, providing essential data or research. Based on a review of other methods of capturing the prototype development process, we compare existing documentation tools with the method used in the case study and outline the practices and tools related to the effective documentation of prototyping activity.

In addition, the stages of the innovation development process for successful innovation management in tourism businesses, the factors that prevent the development of innovation, and the success factors for the development of innovation are discussed. This chapter will contribute to the development of an insight into the importance of innovation in the tourism industry, which is highly dynamic, variable, and risky, and reveal the factors necessary for the creation and implementation of successful innovation programs.

The aim of the study was to explore various issues related to the introduction and use of ICT in primary schools in eastern and central Croatia from the viewpoint of informatics teachers. A total of 232 respondents participated in the survey. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were applied in data analysis. The results indicate that the equipment in computer classrooms is only partially satisfactory. LCD projectors and multimedia computers are mostly used in teaching informatics. The research also revealed that teachers are aware of the importance of ICT implementation in classrooms. However, they are less satisfied with the professional development opportunities. Their responses also suggest that they are ready to participate in the curriculum development process, undertake continuing education, and focus on pupils and their learning. In addition, the analysis showed that teachers, regardless of their background characteristics, share similar views. So far, the issues discussed in this paper have only been superficially examined. The present study expands previous research by providing insight into the practice and attitudes of informatics teachers in Croatian primary schools.

Protoheme IX is a typical iron porphyrin cofactor, showing a variety of reactivities in many hemoproteins under the reaction environments provided by protein matrices. Chemical modification of the protoheme cofactor is expected to be a versatile strategy to design hemoproteins possessing unique functions. This review focuses on the conversion of a hemoprotein, mainly myoglobin (an oxygen-storage hemoprotein), into a protein having different functions from the original ones by replacement of the protoheme cofactor with synthetic cofactors. The myoglobin having anionic patches pended to the heme propionates effectively binds electron-accepting proteins or small cationic organic molecules on the protein surface, resulting in enhanced efficiency of the photoinduced electron transfers from the myoglobin to these electron acceptors. Furthermore, the peroxidase and peroxygenase activities are also enhanced due to the facile substrate accesses. The attachment of the chemically active moiety such as flavin at the heme terminal is also important to give P450-like function to the native myoglobin. The employment of a structural isomer of porphyrin as an artificial cofactor gives rise to remarkably high dioxygen affinity and peroxidase activity in myoglobin, and allows us to easily detect high-valent species of the porphyrin isomer in HRP. These examples provide a clear insight into hemoprotein modifications based on synthetic chemistry as well as genetic amino acid mutations.

In this article, the authors present the first documented implementation of a director-produced and delivered audio description (AD) for devising theatre. In a single live, audio-described performance of Highway 63: The Fort Mac Show at Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto, Canada, the director/describer’s artistically informed approach focuses on entertainment value for blind and low vision (B/LV) theatregoers. In-depth, semi-structured interviews with the director/screenwriter/describer garnered insight into a director’s unique perspective on the development process for the integrated approach to AD, including her artistic choices, expectations and delivery style as a first-time amateur director/describer. The process of developing and delivering integrated AD had a transformative effect on her as a director.

Summary Objectives: Two forms of participatory design (PD) – management-dominated and end-users focused – are described in the design and introduction of an electronic patient record (EPR) for a mental health care centre. Methods: Qualitative research methods were used to achieve a ‘fine-grained’ insight into the EPR development process and its impacts. These methods included interviews, document study and observation of project group meetings. Results: Management-dominated PD is highly structured, led by managers and centred around rationalisation of work. End-user focused PD is more bottom-up oriented. Central in this approach are users’ working patterns and user needs. In the case described, both forms actually lead to a poorly functioning EPR. It is explained why these results could be expected. Conclusion: Our findings suggest not to reject PD, but to find a more appropriate balance between the two forms of PD.

Recent evidence strongly suggests that firms’ joint action may be insufficient for the creation of clusters in order to face the new competitive pressures of globalization. To cope with these pressures, the authors argue that governments can play an important role in the process of creating the development of clusters. Based on a theoretical framework, they examine the way in which governmental intervention and public policies to foster cluster creation may provide positive outcomes. Here, the authors study the different approaches developed in cluster theories and provide an insight into the set of governmental and policy roles that may facilitate the formulation of local clusters. Finally, they propose a re-conceptualization of clusters theory that will potentially increase its value as a comprehensive tool for regional economic development.
