In the present study, the flow characteristics of butterfly valves with different sizes DN 80 (nominal diameter: 76.2 mm), DN 262 (nominal diameter: 254 mm), DN 400 (nominal diameter: 406 mm) were numerically investigated under different valve opening percentages. Representative two-equation turbulence models of two-equation k-epsilon model of Launder and Sharma, two-equation k-omega model of Wilcox, and two-equation k-omega SST model of Menter were selected. Flow characteristics of butterfly valves were examined to determine turbulence model effects. It was determined that increasing turbulence effect could cause many discrepancies between turbulence models, especially in areas with large pressure drop and velocity increase. In addition, sensitivity analysis of flow properties was conducted to determine the effect of constants used in each turbulence model. It was observed that the most sensitive flow properties were turbulence dissipation rate (Epsilon) for the k-epsilon turbulence model and turbulence specific dissipation rate (Omega) for the k-omega turbulence model.

Environmental crosswind can greatly affect the development of aircraft wake vortex pair. Previous numerical simulations and experiments have shown that the nonlinear vertical shear of the crosswind velocity can affect the dissipation rate of the aircraft wake vortex, causing each vortex of the vortex pair descent with different velocity magnitude, which will lead to the asymmetrical settlement and tilt of the wake vortex pair. Through numerical simulations, this article finds that uniform crosswind convection and linear vertical shear crosswind convection can also have an effect on the strength of the vortex. This effect is inversely proportional to the cube of the vortex spacing, so it is more intense on small separation vortex pair. In addition, the superposition of crosswind and vortex-induced velocities will lead to the asymmetrical pressure distribution around the vortex pair, which will also cause the tilt of the vortex pair. Furthermore, a new analysis method for wake vortex is proposed, which can be used to predict the vortex trajectory.

Direct numerical simulations of a turbulent channel flow with passive scalar transport are used to examine the relationship between small-scale velocity and scalar fields. The Reynolds number based on the friction velocity and the channel half-width is equal to 180, 395 and 640, and the molecular Prandtl number is 0.71. The focus is on the interrelationship between the components of the vorticity vector and those of the scalar derivative vector. Near the wall, there is close similarity between different components of the two vectors due to the almost perfect correspondence between the momentum and thermal streaks. With increasing distance from the wall, the magnitudes of the correlations become smaller but remain non-negligible everywhere in the channel owing to the presence of internal shear and scalar layers in the inner region and the backs of the large-scale motions in the outer region. The topology of the scalar dissipation rate, which is important for small-scale scalar mixing, is shown to be associated with the organized structures. The most preferential orientation of the scalar dissipation rate is the direction of the mean strain rate near the wall and that of the fluctuating compressive strain rate in the outer region. The latter region has many characteristics in common with several turbulent flows; viz. the dominant structures are sheetlike in form and better correlated with the energy dissipation rate than the enstrophy.

In turbulent premixed flames, for the mixing at a molecular level of reactants and products on the flame surface, it is crucial to sustain the combustion. This mixing phenomenon is featured by the scalar dissipation rate, which may be broadly defined as the rate of micro-mixing at small scales. This term, which appears in many turbulent combustion methods, includes the Conditional Moment Closure (CMC) and the Probability Density Function (PDF), requires an accurate model. In this study, a mathematical closure for the conditional mean scalar dissipation rate, <Nc|ζ>, in Reynolds, Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) context is proposed and tested against two different Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) databases having different thermochemical and turbulence conditions. These databases consist of lean turbulent premixed V-flames of the CH4-air mixture and stoichiometric turbulent premixed flames of H2-air. The mathematical model has successfully predicted the peak and the typical profile of <Nc|ζ> with the sample space ζ and its prediction was consistent with an earlier study.

The hot deformation behaviors of a new Ti-6Al-2Nb-2Zr-0.4B titanium alloy in the strain rate range 0.01–10.0 s−1 and temperature range 850–1060 °C were evaluated using hot compressing testing on a Gleeble-3800 simulator at 60% of deformation degree. The flow stress characteristics of the alloy were analyzed according to the true stress–strain curve. The constitutive equation was established to describe the change of deformation temperature and flow stress with strain rate. The thermal deformation activation energy Q was equal to 551.7 kJ/mol. The constitutive equation was ε ˙=e54.41[sinh (0.01σ)]2.35exp(−551.7/RT). On the basis of the dynamic material model and the instability criterion, the processing maps were established at the strain of 0.5. The experimental results revealed that in the (α + β) region deformation, the power dissipation rate reached 53% in the range of 0.01–0.05 s−1 and temperature range of 920–980 °C, and the deformation mechanism was dynamic recovery. In the β region deformation, the power dissipation rate reached 48% in the range of 0.01–0.1 s−1 and temperature range of 1010–1040 °C, and the deformation mechanism involved dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization.

The turbulence dissipation will cause the increment of energy loss in the multiphase pump and deteriorate the pump performance. In order to research the turbulence dissipation rate distribution characteristics in the pressurized unit of the multiphase pump, the spiral axial flow type multiphase pump is researched numerically in the present study. This research is focused on the turbulence dissipation rate distribution characteristics in the directions of inlet to outlet, hub to rim, and in the circumferential direction of the rotating impeller blades. Numerical simulation based on the RANS (Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations) and the k-ω SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model has been carried out. The numerical method is verified by comparing the numerical results with the experimental data. Results show that the regions of the large turbulence dissipation rate are mainly at the inlet and outlet of the rotating impeller and static impeller, while it is almost zero from the inlet to the middle of outlet in the suction surface and pressure surface of the first-stage rotating impeller blades. The turbulence dissipation rate is increased gradually from the hub to the rim of the inlet section of the first-stage rotating impeller, while it is decreased firstly and then increased on the middle and outlet sections. The turbulence dissipation rate distributes unevenly in the circumferential direction on the outlet section. The maximum value of the turbulence dissipation rate occurs at 0.9 times of the rated flow rate, while the minimum value at 1.5 times of the rated flow rate. Four turning points in the turbulence dissipation rate distribution that are the same as the number of impeller blades occur at 0.5 times the blade height at 0.9 times the rated flow rate condition. The turbulence dissipation rate distribution characteristics in the pressurized unit of the multiphase pump have been studied carefully in this paper, and the research results have an important significance for improving the performance of the multiphase pump theoretically.
