AbstractMarusic et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 716, 2013, R3) show the first clear evidence of universal logarithmic scaling emerging naturally (and simultaneously) in the mean velocity and the intensity of the streamwise velocity fluctuations about that mean in canonical turbulent flows near walls. These observations represent a significant advance in understanding of the behaviour of wall turbulence at high Reynolds number, but perhaps the most exciting implication of the experimental results lies in the agreement with the predictions of such scaling from a model introduced by Townsend (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 11, 1961, pp. 97–120), commonly termed the attached eddy hypothesis. The elegantly simple, yet powerful, study by Marusic et al. should spark further investigation of the behaviour of all fluctuating velocity components at high Reynolds numbers and the outstanding predictions of the attached eddy hypothesis.

We present a model for the relative velocity of inertial particles in turbulent flows that provides new physical insight into this problem. Our general formulation shows that the relative velocity has contributions from two terms, referred to as the ‘generalized acceleration’ and ‘generalized shear’, because they reduce to the well-known acceleration and shear terms in the Saffman–Turner limit. The generalized shear term represents particles' memory of the flow velocity difference along their trajectories and depends on the inertial particle pair dispersion backward in time. The importance of this backward dispersion in determining the particle relative velocity is emphasized. We find that our model with a two-phase separation behaviour, an early ballistic phase and a later tracer-like phase, as found by recent simulations for the forward (in time) dispersion of inertial particle pairs, gives good fits to the measured relative speeds from simulations at low Reynolds numbers. In the monodisperse case with identical particles, the generalized acceleration term vanishes and the relative velocity is determined by the generalized shear term. At large Reynolds numbers, our model gives a St1/2-dependence of the relative velocity on the Stokes number St in the inertial range for both the ballistic behaviour and the Richardson separation law. This leads to the same inertial-range scaling for the two-phase separation that well fits the simulation results. Our calculations for the bidisperse case show that, with the friction timescale of one particle fixed, the relative speed as a function of the other particle's friction time has a dip when the two timescales are similar. This indicates that similar-size particles tend to have stronger velocity correlation than different ones. We find that the primary contribution at the dip, i.e. for similar particles, is from the generalized shear term, while the generalized acceleration term is dominant for particles of very different sizes. Future numerical studies are motivated to check the accuracy of the assumptions made in our model and to investigate the backward-in-time dispersion of inertial particle pairs in turbulent flows.

This chapter introduces the main ideas behind the application of LBE methods to the problem of turbulence modeling, namely the simulation of flows which contain scales of motion too small to be resolved on present-day and foreseeable future computers. Many real-life flows of practical interest exhibit Reynolds numbers far too high to be directly simulated in full resolution on present-day computers and arguably for many years to come. This raises the challenge of predicting the behavior of highly turbulent flows without directly simulating all scales of motion which take part to turbulence dynamics, but only those that fall within the computer resolution at hand.

Abstract In this paper, we evaluate the hypothesis that bump arrays can be used to separate particles from turbulent flows entering the array. Microfluidic bump arrays are known for separating particles by size from laminar inlet flows. However, turbulent inlet flows have not been explored but become important as microfluidic bump arrays are scaled up to mesofluidic bump arrays. We find experimentally that particle separation is indeed effective at higher Reynolds numbers. These experimental findings portend industrial scale particle separation due to the higher flow rates they facilitate.

The status of prediction methods for friction coefficients in turbulent flows over nonuniform or random rough surfaces is reviewed. Experimental data for friction factors in fully developed pipe flows with Reynolds numbers between 10,000 and 600,000 are presented for two nonuniform rough surfaces. One surface was roughened with a mixture of cones and hemispheres which had the same height and base diameter and were arranged in a uniform array. The other surface was roughened with a mixture of two sizes of cones and two sizes of hemispheres. These data are compared with predictions made using the previously published discrete element prediction approach of Taylor, Coleman, and Hodge. The agreement between the data and the predictions is excellent.

The behaviour of fluid-particle acceleration in near-wall turbulent flows is investigated in numerically simulated turbulent channel flows at low to moderate Reynolds numbers, Reτ = 180~600). The acceleration is decomposed into pressure-gradient (irrotational) and viscous contributions (solenoidal acceleration) and the statistics of each component are analysed. In near-wall turbulent flows, the probability density function of acceleration is strongly dependent on the distance from the wall. Unexpectedly, the intermittency of acceleration is strongest in the viscous sublayer, where the acceleration flatness factor of O(100) is observed. It is shown that the centripetal acceleration around coherent vortical structures is an important source of the acceleration intermittency. We found sheet-like structures of strong solenoidal accelerations near the wall, which are associated with the background shear modified by the interaction between a streamwise vortex and the wall. We found that the acceleration Kolmogorov constant is a linear function of y+ in the log layer. The Reynolds number dependence of the acceleration statistics is investigated.

Polymer additives can substantially reduce the drag of turbulent flows and the upper limit, the so-called state of ‘maximum drag reduction’ (MDR), is to a good approximation independent of the type of polymer and solvent used. Until recently, the consensus was that, in this limit, flows are in a marginal state where only a minimal level of turbulence activity persists. Observations in direct numerical simulations at low Reynolds numbers ($Re$) using minimal sized channels appeared to support this view and reported long ‘hibernation’ periods where turbulence is marginalized. In simulations of pipe flow at $Re$ near transition we find that, indeed, with increasing Weissenberg number ($Wi$), turbulence expresses long periods of hibernation if the domain size is small. However, with increasing pipe length, the temporal hibernation continuously alters to spatio-temporal intermittency and here the flow consists of turbulent puffs surrounded by laminar flow. Moreover, upon an increase in $Wi$, the flow fully relaminarizes, in agreement with recent experiments. At even larger $Wi$, a different instability is encountered causing a drag increase towards MDR. Our findings hence link earlier minimal flow unit simulations with recent experiments and confirm that the addition of polymers initially suppresses Newtonian turbulence and leads to a reverse transition. The MDR state on the other hand results at these low$Re$ from a separate instability and the underlying dynamics corresponds to the recently proposed state of elasto-inertial turbulence.

AbstractA simple oceanic model is presented for source–sink flow on the β plane to discuss the pathways from source to sink when transport boundary layers have large enough Reynolds numbers to be inertial in their dynamics. A representation of the flow as a Fofonoff gyre, suggested by prior work on inertial boundary layers and eddy-driven circulations in two-dimensional turbulent flows, indicates that even when the source and sink are aligned along the same western boundary the flow must intrude deep into the interior before exiting at the sink. The existence of interior pathways for the flow is thus an intrinsic property of an inertial circulation and is not dependent on particular geographical basin geometry.
