Efficacy of cobalt pellets for providing cobalt for penned sheep

Cobalt pellets introduced into the rumens of sheep, either singly or accompanied by an abrasive steel grinder or by a second pellet, have been shown to be equally as effective, over a period of more than 5 years, as a supplement of 1 mg Co/day per os in maintaining health, body weight, and adequate concentrations of vitamin B12 in liver and serum of sheep fed on a cobalt-deficient ration in pens. Comparison of the weight losses of pellets recovered from the rumens in which they were carried, either singly or together with another heavy object, and studies with pellets containing 60Co have shown that release of cobalt from a pellet which is accompanied by an abrading device is significantly greater than when a single pellet is carried in the rumen. Increase of the calcium acetate content of the diet increased the rate of release of cobalt from the pellet.

SummaryA survey of sheep production was undertaken in rangeland areas of western Afghanistan to provide basic information of ewe body-weight changes throughout the year and on production variables, including mortality and lambing performance. Ewes lost up to 31% of body weight between December and March and mortality over the same period was 7%. On the basis of the results of this survey, an experiment was made to test the effect on lambing performance of pre-lambing supplementation of range-based ewes.Supplementation reduced weight losses in ewes, but the feeding treatments did not produce significant results in terms of lamb birth weights or survival to 10 days. However, there were indications that selective feeding of weak ewes can produce economic benefits, given that the costs of supervising such animals are minimal and the price of grain supplements is low relative to the price of meat.

The administration of diets containing 0.05–0.40% dl-ethionine to partially hepatectomized rats decreases the extent of liver regeneration over a period of 10.5 days. Body weight losses and definite liver pathology are noted for animals of either sex fed the rations with 0.30% or 0.40% ethionine. The effect is neutralized by the simultaneous feeding of methionine but not by choline, thereby reflecting definite amino acid antagonism. S-ethyl-l-cysteine, a homolog of ethionine, at a dietary level of 0.40% is without effect on the rate of liver regeneration.

A study of transaminase enzymes in various tissues of different species was carried out. Rabbits were fed with a vitamin E deficient diet. Controls receiving vitamin E were maintained on the same diet. Animals were killed at intervals and the glutamic-aspartic transaminase (GOT) and the glutamic-alanine transaminase (GPT) levels were determined in the muscle, blood, and liver.Mice with hereditary muscular dystrophy and normal litter mates which served as controls were killed at different stages of the disease and GPT and GOT levels were also determined in the muscle, blood, and liver.Important variations between the two types of dystrophy were noticed. Variations in the levels of GPT and GOT were also significant in blood and liver of dystrophic rabbits.Exogenous glutamic acid was injected to vitamin E deprived rabbits. Body weight losses and the onset of the terminal stage of the disease were much postponed when compared to the vitamin E deprived rabbits which did not receive glutamic acid.A discussion of the possible role of glutamic acid in muscular dystrophy of vitamin E deprived rabbits is presented.

A total of 24, six weeks old mice were used to study the body weight and haemato-biochemical changes following administering of different haematinics (CuSO4, FeSO4 and Vitamin B12). The experiment was performed in Physiology laboratory, Department of Physiology, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, from February to March 2006. They were randomly assigned to one of four equal groups (n = 6). In addition to normal rat pellets Group A was supplemented with CuSO4 @ 0.6mg/mice/day orally, Group B with FeSO4 @ 1.2mg/mice/day orally, and Group C with Vitamin B12 (Cytamin®, Glaxo) @ 0.004mg/mice intramuscularly at every 7 days. Group D was considered as control and was also supplemented with rat pellets. Increased body weight was observed in all haematinic treated mice but group B had a significant (p < 0.05) higher weight gain compared to the control. TEC and PCV increased significantly (p < 0.05) in all the treatment groups compared to the control. Statistically insignificant (p > 0.05) increase in TLC was also recorded in all the treated groups. Hb concentration increased for all the treatment groups. The ESR values of the experimental mice were negligible in first hour. The serum transaminases (SGPT and SGOT) increased in all treated groups but the difference in group A was significant (p < 0.05) compared to the control. Blood urea was recorded significantly (P < 0.01) higher for group A and lower for group C compared to the control. This study can be helpful to study the effect of particular haematinic on animal especially on simple stomach animal and human being as mice is used as human and animal model. SUMMARYMeasurements were made of changes in body water, estimated by the dilution of deuterium oxide, in six Hereford x British Friesian lactating cows in their second lactation and in four of the same animals in their third lactation. The animals were subjected to a prolonged period of underfeeding followed by a period of realimentation. Milk yields were measured twice daily whilst measurement of live weight and certain blood constituents were made at 7-day intervals during the experimental periods in both years. During underfeeding milk yield differed markedly among the cows and it appeared that the cows with a higher milk potential maintained a higher yield but in doing so they incurred a greater loss of body weight. On refeeding there was little or no response in milk yield. Weight losses during the second lactation consisted mainly of body fat (calculated by difference) but the four higher yielding cows lost appreciable amounts of body water and probably significant amounts of body protein. In the third lactation all four cows lost less body fat but more body water and probably body protein than they did in the second lactation. On refeeding all animals in both years except the two lowest yielders in the second lactation gained substantial amounts of body water and probably protein but relatively little or no body fat. Significant negative and positive correlations were obtained between plasma glucose and loss of body water and between plasma free fatty acids and loss of body fat respectively.

1. In the wild, red grouse live largely on heather, a high-fibre (25%), low-protein (7%) food. Digestibility trials were carried out under semi-natural conditions, with magnesium as a digestibility marker. Two trials were done, one in autumn and one in spring.2. Digestibility of the dry matter varied from 21 to 30% and metabolizable energy from 1.1 to 1.6 kcal/g. These variations were inversely related to intake and could partly be accounted for by facultative variations in holocellulose and lignin digestion.3. Digestion of soluble carbohydrates, protein (measured as α-amino-nitrogen) and holocellulose varied between trials according to the initial concentration in the food. The digestibility of soluble carbohydrate was high (78–83%) in autumn (16% in food) and low (61–66%) in spring (11% in food) and that of protein was relatively low (24–31%) in autumn (6% in food) and high (42–48%) in spring (7% in food). Digestibility of crude fat was 30–33% for four birds and 20% for one bird.4. By comparison with poultry, voluntary intake of dry matter was very high relative to body-weight and intake of energy appeared to be adequate. None the less, all birds lost weight during the trials, presumably for reasons other than energy shortage.5. Urate excretion increased in parallel with body-weight losses, but formed only 2% of the total N output at low weight losses, in which event the main nitrogenous compounds in the droppings were α-amino N (presumably largely from undigested protein), ammonium salts and ornithuric acid.6. The ornithuric acid was presumably a detoxication product of prolignins and possibly tannins and other polyphenols. Its excretion by grouse corresponds to the excretion of hippuric acid by ruminants.

Clarified slurry oil (CSO, CAS #64741–62-4; also termed carbon black oil), a residual product from the fluidized catalytic cracker in petroleum refining, has the potential to be absorbed through the skin. The reproductive toxicity of CSO in male and female rats was evaluated by the topical route of exposure. CSO was administered dermally to male rats at dosages of 0 (vehicle), 0.1, 1, 10, 50, and 250 mg/kg/day for 70 days before a cohabitation period with untreated female rats. CSO was administered also to female rats at the same dosages for 14 days prior to a 7-day cohabitation period and continuing until Day 0 of gestation (day spermatozoa was present in a smear of the vaginal contents or a copulatory plug was observed in situ). The dosage volume in both experiments was 1 ml/kg, adjusted on each day of dosage based on individual body weights recorded immediately before application of CSO. Under the conditions of these experiments, the paternal no-observable-adverse-effect-level (NOAEL) for CSO administered dermally was 1 mg/kg/day. The 10, 50, and 250 mg/kg/day dosages of CSO caused body weight losses and/or decreased body weight gains and reduced feed consumption. The 50- and 250-mg/kg/day dosages also caused adverse clinical effects. No mating, fertility, or testicular end points in male rats were affected by the highest dosages tested; therefore, the reproductive NOAEL for male rats is <250 mg/kg/day. The maternal NOAEL for CSO administered dermally was 10 mg/kg/day. The 50-and 250-mg/kg/day dosages of CSO reduced body weight gains; 250 mg/kg/day also reduced feed consumption. There were no adverse effects on gonadal function, estrous cycles, mating behavior, conception rates, or reproductive organ weights; therefore, the reproductive NOAEL for female rats administered CSO dermally is at least 250 mg/kg/day.

ABSTRACTThe effects of reducing the feed intake of 12 winter-calving (Hereford male × British Friesian female) cows to the maintenance level for 6 weeks from week 10 of lactation were investigated during two consecutive lactation periods. Initially, six cows were in their first and six in their third lactation. In each year the period of ‘underfeeding’ was preceded by a period of ‘adequate feeding’ (maintenance plus milk production requirements) and succeeded by a period of ‘refeeding’ (2 × maintenance). Changes in body water, estimated by the dilution of tritiated water and deuterium oxide at the end of each feeding period, were used to calculate changes in body tissue. Milk yield during the period of ‘adequate feeding’ indicated that individual cows differed markedly in milk production potential. During ‘underfeeding’ milk yield was related to lactation potential. Cows of higher potential tended to maintain higher yields than those of lower potential but in doing so they incurred higher body-weight losses. The ‘refeeding’ period did not result in significant increases in milk yield. The weight losses during ‘underfeeding’ consisted mainly of fat but some cows apparently mobilized relatively large amounts of protein. More fat per unit body weight loss was mobilized by the heifers than by the cows, which, on the other hand appeared to mobilize relatively more protein. On ‘refeeding’, only a few cows were able to achieve complete tissue repletion.

Anorexia nervosa is a disorder characterized by loss of appetite, amenorrhoea, and weight loss in the absence of any primary psychiatric or physical illness (Dally and Sargant, 1966). Features which have recently been stated to be of value in distinguishing it from anorexia due to other causes are: denial of illness, bradycardia and lanugo hair (Wright et al., 1969). The weight losses in this condition are usually at least 20 per cent of ideal body weight, depending on the quality and promptness of treatment.
