Ten taxa of marine diatoms from SE. or NE. Australia are described or redescribed, and their characters are supplemented by fine-structural and developmental data. One genus (Pseudoguinardia von Stosch), one species (Pseudoguinardia recta von Stosch), and two varieties (Odontella retiformis var. trigona von Stosch and Haslea gigantea var. tennis von Stosch) are newly described. Six other taxa [Coscinodiscus alboranii Pavillard, C. concinniformis Simonsen, Dactyliosolen blavyanus (Peragallo) Hasle, Rhizosolenia phuketensis Sundstrom, Haslea gigantea (Hustedt) Simonsen, and H. wawrikae (Hustedt) Simonsen] are new to the Australian flora. Gross and fine-structural characters are added to the descriptions of the world-wide and common R. stolterfothii (Stolterfoth) Peragallo and of the non-Australian Odontella retiformis var. retiformis von Stosch in order to bring them on a level of detail sufficient for their comparison with R. phuketensis or the new variety, respectively. The new species, although overlooked up to now, as well as C. alboranii and probably R. phuketensis, seem to be distributed world-wide in warmer neritic waters.

Based on plankton samples collected in 1970 and on a survey of the literature, the Australian members of the genus Palmeria and of the family Lithodesmiaceae are critically listed or described. Both species of Palmeria are new for the Australian region, as are one species each of Lithodesmium and of Ditylum, two species of the genus Lithodesmioides, one species plus one variety of Bellerochea, as well as one species and one form of Neostreptotheca. Lithodesmium duckerae, Lithodesmioides polymorphum and L. minutum, Ditylum buchananii, Bellerochea horologicalis var. recta and Neostreptotheca torta and its fo. triangularis are described for the first time. Palmeria ostenfeldii, a species associated with an epiphytic ciliate, is sep- arated from P. hardmaniana. In Ditylum brightwellii, the proportion of thecae with the slotted versus the fimbriate form of the marginal ridge is shown to be probably influenced by the ambient water conditions. In the same species, the ontogenies of the resting spores (including germi- nation) as well as of the gametes are described. Lithodesmioides presents new instances of fissipariety (split wall character) in both of its species. 'Simple pores', which have recently been demonstrated by Li and Volcani to be distinct in origin from areolae, are common in all described species of Lithodesmium, Lithodesmioides and Ditylum in two forms as either 'branching point pores' or 'intracostal pores'.

The viewing and sharing of remote sensing optical imagery through the World Wide Web is an efficient means for providing information to the general public and decision makers. Since clouds and hazes inevitably limit the contrast and deteriorate visual effects, only cloudless scenes are usually included and presented in existing web mapping services. This work proposes a level-of-detail (LOD) based enhancement approach to present satellite imagery with an adaptively enhanced contrast determined by its viewing LOD. Compared to existing web mapping services, this new approach provides a better visual effect as well as spectral details of satellite imagery for cases partially covered with clouds or cirrocumulus clouds. The full archive of global satellite imagery, either the existing one or the one collected in the future, can be utilized and shared through the Web with the processing proposed in this new approach.

Two new species of dorid nudibranchs of the genus Tambja are described from the Indo-Pacific and the temperate waters of the western Atlantic. Tambja haidari sp. nov. is only known from the type locality in Senegal. This species has dark blue ground colour with yellow bands and sky-blue spots, which become real tubercles along the tail. The internal features are typical of species of the genus, with rachidian teeth that lack denticles and with a prostate slightly differentiated from the rest of the vas deferens. Tambja blacki sp. nov., from Papua New Guinea and eastern Australia, has yellow-green or green colour with black blotches. There are two large blotches on the head continuing from the inner side of the base of the rhinophores towards the rear. The notal margin is elevated and joins behind the gill in a well-developed hump. The reproductive system of this species is very characteristic because it has some features more typical of species of Nembrotha than of Tambja (i.e. vaginal gland absent, prostate spread over the bursa copulatrix and wide and elongate vagina). These descriptions bring the number of species of Tambja found around the world to 31.

In recent years there has been an increase in the number of papers dealing with the family Cupedidae, but in spite of the revised interest in this group there is still no publication which treats the family on a world-wide basis and provides keys for separating all the genera and species. According to Janssens (1953), the family contains 22 species belonging to five genera. Recently, Neboiss (1959) added three new species from Australia and erected a new South American genus, while Papp (1961) described a new species from California. In this paper I will bring the available information on the Cupedidae together and present a list of fossil forms, a series of keys to the genera and species, and an account of their geographical distribution. In addition, I propose three new synonyms in the genus Cupes.

Alobevania Kawada & Deans, n. gen., and three new ensign wasps, A. gattiae Kawada & Deans, n. sp., A. tavaresi Kawada & Deans, n. sp., and A. longisaeta Kawada & Deans, n. sp. are described from specimens collected in the Neotropics. The genus Mecopoda Serville includes eight species, which are mostly distributed in the Oriental region and a few areas in the Palearctic and Australian region. Five species have been recorded in China. Here based on the acoustical and morphological data, we provide a review on the genus Mecopoda in China. We divide the genus Mecopoda into three species groups according to their acoustical characteristics. Six new species and one new subspecies are discovered to be new to science, that it is, M. crescendo sp. nov., M. himalaya sp. nov., M. tibetensis sp. nov., M. confracta sp. nov., M. synconfracta sp. nov., M. minor sp. nov., and M. m. yunnana subsp. nov.. The male of M. marmorata He is also firstly reported with necessary description. Now the number of the genus Mecopoda is 11 in China and 14 in the world. Necessary description and pictures map are presented.

In this study, we conducted a summer sampling of carabid beetles in eastern Australia to identify their associated parasitic mites. Here, we describe three new species of the genus Eutarsopolipus from under the elytra (forewings) of three native carabid species (Coleoptera: Carabidae): Eutarsopolipus paryavae n. sp. (pterostichi group) from Geoscaptus laevissimus Chaudoir; Eutarsopolipus pulcher n. sp. (leytei group) from Gnathaphanus pulcher (Dejean); and Eutarsopolipus chlaenii n. sp. (myzus group) from Chlaenius flaviguttatus Macleay. We further provide an identification key of the world species of pterostichi and leytei species groups as well as closely related species of the myzus group possessing similar characters including short cheliceral stylets. The significant diversity of Eutarsopolipus recovered here suggests that the current knowledge about Australian podapolipid mites (specially Eutarsopolipus) is still in its infancy and deserves further study.

AbstractFe XIV 530.3 nm coronal emission line observations have been used for the estimation of the green solar corona rotation. A homogeneous data set, created from measurements of the world-wide coronagraphic network, has been examined with a help of correlation analysis to reveal the averaged synodic rotation period as a function of latitude and time over the epoch from 1947 to 1991.The values of the synodic rotation period obtained for this epoch for the whole range of latitudes and a latitude band ±30° are 27.52±0.12 days and 26.95±0.21 days, resp. A differential rotation of green solar corona, with local period maxima around ±60° and minimum of the rotation period at the equator, was confirmed. No clear cyclic variation of the rotation has been found for examinated epoch but some monotonic trends for some time intervals are presented.A detailed investigation of the original data and their correlation functions has shown that an existence of sufficiently reliable tracers is not evident for the whole set of examinated data. This should be taken into account in future more precise estimations of the green corona rotation period.
