Effect of pre-harvest applications of an antitranspirant and vegetable oil on cracking and size of cherry (Prunus avium L.) cv. Van fruit

A 1% solution of antitranspirant and a 0.3% solution of vegetable oil were applied to cherry trees before rainfall during the 3 weeks preceding harvest to evaluate their efficacy in reducing fruit damaged by cracking in field experiments in South Australia from 1993 to 1998. Between 2 and 14% of fruit were cracked on untreated trees during this period. From 6 to 10% less cracked fruit were found in 2 of the 5 seasons following the application of antitranspirant and oil sprays. In the other 3 seasons, levels of cracked fruit were not significantly different between treatments. In the 2 driest seasons, treatment with oil or antitranspirant resulted in larger fruit than on untreated trees, and as in previous studies this was thought to be a result of reduced water loss. In 4 years, total soluble solids content of fruit were similar in all treatments, but in 1996–97 controls had significantly higher sugar levels than the treated fruit. This being the driest year during the study, it is thought that greater water loss occurred on controls leading to a higher concentration of total soluble sugars. Material costs of oil at A$96/ha per application is less, compared with antitranspirant that cost $4000/ha per application.

Worldwide, Brazil holds the fifth position in melon fruits exportation, further expanding its products to provide for the growing demand. This expansion is the result of the development and application of new technologies, including the management of the use of biostimulants. However, for melon crops, the information in the literature on the use of biostimulants remains limited to the effects of different doses on fruit quality at the time of harvest. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of different methods of pre-harvest application of two biostimulants on the production and postharvest conservation of fruits of yellow melon cv. Iracema. The treatments consisted of a combination of three factors: two plant biostimulants (Crop Set® and Spray Dunger®), two application methods of the products (fertigation and spraying), and five times of postharvest storage (0, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days). An additional control treatment corresponded to plants without biostimulant application. The fruits were evaluated for production and physicochemical attributes: average mass, yield, flesh firmness, titratable acidity, soluble solids content, SSC/TA ratio, pH, total soluble sugars, and weight loss. Fertigation is the recommended application method of biostimulants for yellow melon due to its effect on the increase of average mass, yield, flesh firmness, soluble solids content, and total soluble sugars of the fruits in relation to the spraying method.

Salinity is one of the most severe environmental stresses that negatively limits anatomical structure, growth and the physiological and productivity traits of field crops. The productivity of lupine plants is severely restricted by abiotic stress, particularly, salinity in arid and semiarid regions. Activated yeast extract (AYE) can perform a vital role in the tolerance of environmental stress, as it contains phytohormones and amino acids. Thus, field experiments were conducted to explore the potential function of active yeast extract (0, 50, 75, and 100 mL AYE L−1) in mitigating the harmful impacts of salinity stress (EC = 7.65 dS m−1) on anatomical structure, growth, and the physiological and productivity traits of two lupine cultivars: Giza 1 and Giza 2. The different AYE treatments resulted in a substantial improvement in studied attributes, for example the growth, anatomical, physiological characteristics, and seed yields of treated lupine cultivars compared with untreated plants. Among the AYE doses, 75 mL L−1 significantly improved plant growth, leaf photosynthetic pigments, total soluble sugars, total protein, and seed yields, and exposed the best anatomical attributes of the two lupine cultivars grown under saline stress. The exogenous application of 75 mL AYE L−1 was the most influential, and it surpassed the control results by 45.9% for 100-seed weight and 26.9% for seed yield per hectare. On the other hand, at a concentration of 75 mL L−1 AYE there was a decrease in the alkaloids and endogenous proline under the studied salinity stress conditions. Promoted salinity stress tolerance through sufficient AYE dose is a hopeful strategy to enhance the tolerance and improve productivity of lupine into salinity stress. Furthermore, the response of lupine to salinity stress appears to rely on AYE dose. The results proved that Giza 2 was more responsive to AYE than Giza 1, showing a better growth and higher yield, and reflecting further salinity tolerance than the Giza 1 cultivar.

Calcium chloride (CaCl2) and Ca(OH)2 sprays reduced rain splitting in Van cherries (Prunus avium L.). Multiple applications were better than single sprays. Soluble solids content was increased in many instances by the treatments. Fruit shrivel was appreciable in cherries sprayed with Ca(OH)2 particularly in hot seasons. Single or multiple applications of Nutri-Save (a polymeric coating), Pro-Stick (a sticking agent) and Envy (an antitranspirant) did not affect rain splitting in Stella cherries. The purpose this work was to evaluate the influence of pre-harvest application of plant biostimulant on the quality and shelf-life of melon. For this an experiment was established in the “Coopyfrutas”, located in Rio Grande do Norte state/Brazil. The treatments consisted of a combination of factors: melon cultivars (‘Goldex’ and ‘Iracema’) and pre-harvest application of plant biostimulant, Crop Set®, (with and without). At commercial maturity, some fruit of each treatment were sampled and analyzed and the others were stored in a cold chamber at 10±2 ºC and 80±2% relative humidity. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized split-plot design. The plots consisted of cultivars and Crop Set® application and subplots of different storage time (0, 14, 21, 28, and 35 days after harvest) with eight replications. The characteristics evaluated were length, diameter, internal cavity, external and internal appearance, weight loss, fresh firmness, soluble solids, titratable acidity, pH, SS/TA ratio, and total soluble sugars. Applications of plant biostimulant led to an increase in fruit length and diameter. It reduced fresh firmness and increased the pH of ‘Goldex’ fruit. The total soluble sugars reduced at 35 days of storage in the ‘Iracema’ fruit treated with plant biostimulant.

This study aimed to evaluate postharvest quality of Tommy Atkins mangoes treated with starch cassava and chitosan based coatings. Mango fruits were collected at physiological maturity. After cleaning, weighing and identification, fruits were submitted to the respective treatments and stored for 35 days in the Laboratório de Tecnologia de Alimentos, with weekly evaluations under refrigeration 13±1 ºC and 90±5% RH. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design, in factorial scheme with four treatments: control, cassava starch (CS), chitosan (CH), and cassava starch/chitosan (CS/CH) at a concentration of 2%, and six storage periods (0, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days) with four replications. Fruits were evaluated in: appearance, weight loss, external color: luminosity and ΔE, pulp firmness, titratable acidity, soluble solids content, starch, total soluble sugars, reducing sugars and sucrose. Data were submitted to analysis of variance using SISVAR software and compared by Scott-Knott test at 5% of probability. It was observed a reduction in appearance, pulp firmness, titratable acidity, starch and reducing sugars and increase in weight loss, luminosity, ΔE, soluble solids, total soluble sugars and non-reducing sugars during storage. CS/CH coated fruits reported higher notes of appearance, lower weight loss and maintained color. Quality of physicochemical attributes: soluble solids, starch, total soluble sugars, reducing sugars and non-reducing sugars were strongly retarded.

Aim of study: Developing models to determine soluble solids content (SSC) in cherry trees by means of Vis/NIR spectroscopy.Area of study: The Spanish Autonomous Community of Aragón (Spain).Material and methods: Vis/NIR spectroscopy was applied to Prunus avium fruit ‘Chelan’ (n=360) to predict total SSC using a range 400-2420 nm. Linear (PLS) and nonlinear (LSSVM) regression methods were applied to establish prediction models.Main results: The two regression methods applied obtained similar results (Rcv2=0.97 and Rcv2=0.98 respectively). The range 700-1060 nm attained better results to predict SSC in different seasons. Forty variables selected according to the variable selection method achieved Rcv2 value, 0.97 similar than full range.Research highlights: The development of this methodology is of great interest to the fruit sector in the area, facilitating the harvest for future seasons. Further work is needed on the development of the NIRS methodology and on new calibration equations for other varieties of cherry and other species.

Banjaluka region is characterized by a very rich diversity of old and autochthonous sweet cherry cultivars, which represent a very important genetic potential for future breeding programs. Autochthonous sweet cherry cultivars are spontaneously propagated and used in very few areas for production and consumption in the fresh condition. A very small percentage of autochthonous cultivars are used in local markets or in some forms of processing. The main reason for this is the small number of individual trees whose fruits are used for own household and their poor management. In order to popularize the production and sale of autochthonous sweet cherry cultivars, during this research was perform the basic pomological measurements of the five most common autochthonous sweet cherry cultivars in the Banjaluka region (Ašlamka, Banjalučka crnica, Bjelica-Biljur, Cipov and Crveni hrušt). Pomological (the weight and dimensions of the fruit, weight and dimensions of the pit, dimension of the stalk and the firmness of the fruit flesh) and chemical (total soluble solids content of the fruit) fruit characteristics were determined. Results showed differences in investigated parameters between the cultivars.

Over the past several growing seasons researchers at Texas Tech University have observed that certain onions appeal to rabbits more than other onions, meaning that rabbits tend to nibble on certain lines or varieties and leave other lines undisturbed. We were interested in determining the cahracteristics of the onions that rabbits seemed to like. Onions were planted at random in the TTU breeding nursery. During the growing season all onions were rated for rabbit appeal - those with chewed leaves and or bulbs were recorded as liked by the rabbits. All onions in each plot, whether disturbed or undisturbed by the rabbits, were tested for pyruvate concentration and soluble solids content after harvest. Pyruvates were measured by mmol/gram pyruvic acid and soluble solids content by °Brix refractometer reading. The most damage occurred in onion lines that had the lowest pyruvate levels. Soluble solids did not appear to affect the rabbits' nibbling.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of gibberellic acid (GA3) applications on fruit quality of ‘0900 Ziraat’ sweet cherry (Prunus avium), a low cropping and a large-fruited variety. ‘0900 Ziraat’ trees were sprayed with 0, 15, 20, and 25 ppm GA3, when the fruit were at their straw-yellow color stage. Fruit quality was evaluated at harvest in terms of size, firmness, pedicel length, and soluble solids content (SSC) to determine the optimum application. Fruit treated with GA3 were significantly larger and firmer than the controls. There were no differences in fruit firmness within the different levels of GA3 treatment; however, fruit treated with 20 and 25 ppm GA3 were significantly larger than the fruit treated with 15 ppm GA3. Trees treated with the optimum concentration of GA3 (25 ppm) in two different locations yielded fruit with 13.4% and 14.1% greater weight and 38% and 25% higher firmness. GA3 treatments did not affect pedicel length. The effect of GA3 application on SSC was complex; there was a significant interaction between GA3 and location. Being firmer than the controls, the GA3-treated fruit could be harvested at a later date than the controls.

<p>O presente trabalho teve como objetivo estudar as características físicas, químicas e físico-químicas dos frutos da murta (<em>Eugenia gracillima </em>Kiaersk.) no estádio de maturação “maduro”. Os frutos de murta foram colhidos em área de vegetação nativa, na propriedade rural da família Lermen, localizada na Serra dos Paus Dóias - Chapada do Araripe, município de Exu, PE. Após a colheita, os frutos foram transportados para o Laboratório de Ecofisiologia Vegetal da Universidade Estadual do Ceará, para a realização das análises físicas, químicas e físico-químicas: coloração da casca; diâmetros longitudinal e transversal; massas fresca, seca e de água e teor de água; sólidos solúveis totais (SST), acidez total titulável (ATT), pH, relação SST/ATT, carboidratos (amido, açúcares solúveis totais, açúcares redutores e açúcares não redutores); vitamina C; pectinas; fenólicos; antocianinas; flavonoides amarelos e carotenoides. Os frutos da murta (<em>Eugenia gracillima </em>Kiaersk.) são relativamente pequenos com formato levemente ovalado e com coloração 100% violeta quando maduros. Apresentaram ótima qualidade para consumo pelo conteúdo dos sólidos solúveis totais (15,08 °Brix), relação SST/ATT (18,37), açúcares solúveis totais (11,61%) e açúcares redutores (7,80%), como também são frutos ricos em vitamina C (160,62 mg/100 g de massa fresca do fruto) e antioxidantes.</p><p align="center"><strong><em>Physical and physico-chemical fruits characteristics of myrtle</em></strong></p><p><strong>Abstract</strong><strong>: </strong>The present work aimed to study the physical, chemical and physico-chemical fruits characteristics of myrtle (<em>Eugenia gracillima</em> Kiaersk.) in maturation stage "mature". The fruits of myrtle were collected in an area of native vegetation in rural Lermen family property, located in the Serra dos Paus Dóias - Araripe, municipality of Exu, PE. After harvest, the fruits were transported to the Laboratory of Plant Ecophysiology, Ceará State University, to the achievement of physical, chemical and physico-chemical analysis: peel color; longitudinal and transverse diameters; fresh, dry mass and water content and water; total soluble solids (TSS), titulable total acidity (TTA), pH, TSS/TTA, carbohydrates (starch, total soluble sugars, reducing sugars and non reducing sugars, vitamin C, pectins, phenolics, anthocyanins, yellow flavonoids and carotenoids. The myrtle fruit (<em>Eugenia gracillima</em> Kiaersk.) are relatively small with slightly oval in shape and staining with 100% purple when ripe. Showed excellent quality for consumption for the content of total soluble solids (15.08°Brix), TSS/TTA (18.37), total soluble sugars (11.61%) and reducing sugar (7.80%), as well fruits are rich in vitamin C (160.62 mg/100 g fresh weight of fruit) and antioxidants.</p><p><strong> </strong></p>
