This paper reports phase one, conducted from March to June 2015, of a two-phase, qualitative descriptive study designed to explore the perceptions and experiences of older people before and after the introduction of consumer directed care (CDC) to home care packages (HCP) in Australia. Eligible consumers with a local HCP provider were mailed information about the study. Data collection occurred before the introduction of CDC and included face-to-face, in-depth interviews, summaries of interviews, field notes and reflective journaling. Semi-structured questions and ‘emotional touchpoints’ relating to home care were used to guide the interview conversation. Line-by-line data analysis, where significant statements were highlighted and clustered to reveal emergent themes, was used. Five older people, aged 81 to 91 years, participated in the study. The four emergent themes were: seeking quality and reciprocity in carer relationships; patchworking services; the waiting game; and technology with utility. Continuity of carers was central to the development of a trusting relationship and perceptions of care quality among older consumers. Care coordinators and workers should play a key role in ensuring older people receive timely information about CDC and their rights and responsibilities. Participants’ use of contemporary technologies suggests opportunities to improve engagement of HCP clients in CDC.

The present study aimed to determine the effect of Scratch-assisted expressions and applications on the Computational Thinking skills of pre-service teachers. For this purpose, the research was designed with an exploratory sequential design, a mixed research method. Thirty-three pre-service teachers participated in the study. Data were collected with Computational Thinking Scale before and after the applications conducted in the Instructional Technologies course, and with a survey form developed by the author and face-to-face interviews conducted with the participants at the end of the course. Based on the data obtained, it was determined that the applications conducted in the course improved the Computational Thinking skills of the participants. Although the improvement did not differ based on gender, it was determined that the differences were significant based on creativity, algorithmic thinking, and critical thinking sub-dimensions. Furthermore, it was observed that there was a positive and significant correlation between Computational Thinking and academic achievement. Also, pre-service teachers stated that Scratch applications contributed to the acquisition of Computational Thinking skills. It was suggested that the present study findings would contribute to future studies on Computational Thinking acquisition in similar courses.

Introduction: Examining the experiences of students with visual impairments about physical education can lead to a better understanding of how they perceive lessons, activities, and interactions with teachers and peers. Although research in this area of inquiry is growing, the existing literature is limited by geographic location. More specifically, most research in this area has been conducted by examining the experiences of individuals living in the lower 48 states of the contiguous United States. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore the physical education experiences of Alaskan youths with visual impairments. Methods: A convenience sample of four Alaskan youths with visual impairments were recruited to participate in this study. Data were collected via semistructured face-to-face interviews, reflective field notes, and observation notes. Data were analyzed thematically using a four-step line-by-line process, and emergent themes were displayed as findings and discussed concurrently. Results and discussion: Two interrelated themes were constructed from the participants’ narratives. One theme, “accommodation needs met and unmet,” described the participants’ experiences with needed accommodations in physical education and the feelings they ascribed to instances where needs were met or unmet. The second theme, “deleterious peer relationships,” depicted peer relationships in physical education between the participants’ and those without visual impairments and revealed several challenging types of interactions that typified those relationships. Interestingly, although the participants in this study described participating in physical education activities that may be unique to those experienced in the lower 48 states, their experiences with peers and teachers were consistent with those portrayed in research conducted throughout the country. Implications for practitioners: The themes that emerged from this study should be considered by physical education personnel providing services in this, and other similar, geographic regions when planning and providing physical education programming to students with visual impairments.

With increasing chronic diseases, the use of home care is rising in the world. Home care in Iran has many challenges and to improve that, we should identify the challenges and barriers of home care. The aim of this study was to identify and explore the barriers of home care in Iran. This is a qualitative study with content analysis approach that was conducted in Iran in 2015. Fourteen key informants comprising health policymakers, faculty members, nurses, and physicians as well as patients and families engaged in home care purposefully participated in this study. Data was obtained using face-to-face semistructured interviews. A focus group discussion was also used to complete the findings. Graneheim and Lundman’s approach was used for analysis of data and Lincoln and Guba’s criteria were used to confirm the trustworthiness of study’s findings. The data were divided into three main categories and eight subcategories. Main categories included treatment-based approach in the healthcare system, cultural dimensions, and the lack of adequate infrastructure. A position for home care in the healthcare system, considering cultural dimensions in Iranian society and providing an appropriate infrastructure, can be beneficial to improve the situation of home care services in Iran.

Introduction: We have developed the Dementia Elderly Odayaka Scale (DEOS) to evaluate psychosocial aspects in older people. The DEOS can be used to assess well-being, such as personhood and social interaction. Objective: The aim of this study was to apply the 18-item DEOS in participants with dementia and to examine the characteristics and usefulness of this scale. Methods: Facility staff provided care for the participants while taking into consideration each participant’s individuality and strong points. The DEOS was applied at the beginning of the interventions and at 1 and 2 months after the start of the interventions. The changes in the participants’ behaviors and their DEOS scores were then evaluated over time. Results: We examined 13 participants (2 men, 11 women) between the ages of 68 and 91 years. In 60% of the participants the DEOS score increased over time. When care interventions were tailored toward communication and leadership for the 2 men, according to each of their individualities, we observed increases in their scores for “social interaction” at 1 and 2 months thereafter. We also observed increases in the scores for “Expression of emotions” category in 2 of the 5 cases who received an aromatherapy massage. Discussion/Conclusion: The changes in the scores over time and the contents of the field notes were consistent with each other, suggesting that the DEOS can be used both to evaluate the effects of interventions and to plan care that takes advantage of each participant’s positive aspects.

The study of happiness has grown in popularity over the past decades emerging in psychology partly as a reaction against the emphasis on negative topics such as mental illness and other forms of dysfunction. However, the most common way to study happiness and well-being has been using scales that do not allow access to the comments or descriptions of the participants, reducing our comprehension of this phenomenon to numbers. In order to contribute to the study of happiness from a cultural perspective and to understand how Puerto Ricans describe their particular meaning of happiness, a two-phase qualitative descriptive design study was conducted before and after hurricane Maria hit our country. The category “The family context as a main reference for happiness” emerged in both phases of our research. Findings made clear the enduring role of the family in the meaning of happiness for Puerto Ricans.
