Abstract This study explored market demand for conference interpreting in South Korea, focusing on clients’ views on the key factors that affect their recruiting decisions. The study conducted a semi-structured interview using fictitious resumes with 14 participants who are clients of conference interpreting services. The study’s results indicate that: (1) participants place high importance on interpreting quality, particularly emphasizing quality items such as content accuracy and terminology awareness; (2) domain-specific interpreting experience, academic background, and price serve as important quality signals in their recruiting decision-making; and (3) price-quality association is present. Furthermore, the interview results suggest that a collaborative approach from clients is necessary to create an enabling environment for quality interpreting services. Ultimately, this study presents noteworthy information regarding clients’ rationales for their recruitment criteria. This information is expected to widen our understanding of the interpreting market in South Korea.

Abstract Purpose Capability wellbeing measures, such as the ICECAP measures, have been proposed for use in economic evaluations to capture broader outcomes of health and care interventions. The ICECAP measures have been developed to reflect capabilities at different stages of life. Some patient groups include patients of different ages and at different stages of life, so it is not always apparent which ICECAP measure is most relevant. This study explores the impact of age and life stage on completion, where both ICECAP-A and ICECAP-O were completed by the same patient. Methods A think-aloud study, and an associated semi-structured interview were conducted with people receiving kidney care as a renal outpatient, kidney transplant outpatient, or through receiving facility-based haemodialysis. Qualitative analysis focused on (1) differences in responses across measures by individuals, where attributes had conceptual overlap, (2) key factors in self-reported capability levels, and (3) measure preference. Results Thirty participants were included in the study, with a mix of older and younger adults. Attributes with similar wording across measures produced similar responses compared to attributes where wording differed. Age and health were key factors for self-reported capability levels. ICECAP-A was slightly preferred overall, including by older adults. Conclusion This study suggests use of ICECAP-A in patients with certain chronic health conditions that include a mix of adults across the life course. This study highlights the importance of considering the stage of life when using capability measures and in economic evaluations of health and care interventions more generally.

This paper conceptualizes how organized labor in newly industrialized countries both responds to and shapes the presence of foreign multinationals. Four images of multinationals—as “villains,” “necessary evils,” “arm's length collaborators,” and “partners”—are documented and compared using evidence drawn from three countries during the 1950–99 period. Organized labor flatly opposed foreign multinationals early on, under authoritarian regimes, in all three countries—Argentina, South Korea, and Spain—but that stance shifted over time in divergent rather than convergent ways. In Argentina, organized labor alternately viewed multinationals as villains and as a necessary evil, and in Korea it deemed them fit for limited, arm's length collaboration. In Spain, by contrast, unions gradually shifted toward a willing acceptance of multinationals as partners. Organized labor's images of multinationals are found to have resulted from two key factors: democratic versus authoritarian political regimes, and modernizing versus populist labor union mentalities.

Following the 2003 the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the 2015 Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak in South Korea, this research aims to explore and examine the factors influencing the response to infectious diseases, which encompasses both communicable and non-communicable diseases. Through a qualitative research method, this research categorizes the factors as inputs, processes and outputs and applies them into the 2003 SARS and MERS outbreak in South Korea. As the results conducted meta-analyses to comprehensively analyze the correlations of factors influencing disaster response from a Korean context, the findings show that the legislative factor had direct and indirect influence on the overall process of infectious disease response and that Leadership of the central government, establishment of an intergovernmental response system, the need for communication, information sharing and disclosure and onsite response were identified as key factors influencing effective infectious disease response.

In Norway, approximately 50% of older people die in nursing homes (NH). Holistic care and pharmacological management are key factors in quality at the end of life. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to describe the use of opioids in an NH during a 5-year period. We focused on palliative care, symptoms, and suffering during the last 3 days before death. Data were collected from spring 2013 to spring 2018. We used the interRAI assessment instrument annually and when the resident died. We conducted a semi-structured interview with nurses on duty at the deathbed. At the time of death, the residents had an average age of 88.9 years and an average stay of 2.9 years (N = 100). At the first assessment, 19% of the residents used 1 or more type of opioids. On the day of death, 55% had an active prescription for opioids, mainly as subcutaneous injections. The results illustrate the different uses of opioids, including managing pain, dyspnoea, sedation, for comfort, as a prophylaxis, or a combination of reasons. Cancer- and cardiovascular diagnoses were the strongest predictor for using morphine ( P < 0.05). Identification of the residents’ needs for opioids is a challenge for palliative care nurses, both ethically and legally.

The article analysis the attitudes of mentors to the development of student-teacher’s instructional communication skills through teaching practice. The objective of the research was to reveal the opinion of the mentors about the development of student-teacher’s instructional communication. For that purpose observation was carried out in the natural environment. That helped to reveal the peculiarities of students’ instructional communication skills at teaching practice. Semi-structured interview methods were applied to interview the mentors. The data obtained via the Questionnaire for Mentors allowed to assess the student-teachers’ communication skills, and to identify the key factors for theirs’ professional improvement. The interview data analysis presents mentors’ opinion about the dynamics of the student - teachers’ instructional communication skills at teaching practice, the importance of consultations, student-teachers’ assessment of their instructional skills, needs and possibilities of the skill improvement. It became evident that mentors’ assessment differed according to their work experience. When speaking about students’ assessment, the mentors of considerable experience (more than 5 years of continuous pedagogical work experience) admitted, that they had known students well through observing, communicating, consulting them, when talking to their colleagues they could assess their achievements. While the inexperienced mentors communicated with the student-teachers in a more formal way, they were less prepared to supervise students, help them know themselves and improve their instructional skills. When considering improvement possibilities of teaching practice, all mentors claimed that student-teacher’s professional skills are being gained only by practicing. The mentors stressed that readiness for pedagogical professional practice is very much dependent on student’s ability to participate, to reflect, on willingness for self-knowledge as well as strong professional determination; results of individual practice and consultations with competent professionals.

Specialty crops are considered high-risk, high-reward, yet growers face differing, and relatively larger risk exposure when compared to traditional row crops. With traditional row crops, economies of scale and scope are key factors to increasing economic profitability. However, increasing economic profit for specialty crop operations present challenges which limit grower ability to easily take advantage of scale and scope economies. The authors discuss production, finance, regulatory, price, and human resource risks unique to U.S.-grown specialty crops. We apply our economic risk assessment framework to analyze U.S. edamame and present strategies to manage and mitigate risks faced by growers. We conclude that edamame may represent a profitable alternative crop in the U.S., and suggest future research topics are needed to optimize yields and meet market demand.

Abstract Voluntary control over voice-hearing experiences is one of the most consistent predictors of functioning among voice-hearers. However, control over voice-hearing experiences is likely to be more nuanced and variable than may be appreciated through coarse clinician-rated measures, which provide little information about how control is conceptualized and developed. We aimed to identify key factors in the evolution of control over voice-hearing experiences in treatment-seeking (N = 7) and non-treatment-seeking (N = 8) voice-hearers. Treatment-seeking voice-hearers were drawn from local chapters of the Connecticut Hearing Voices Network, and non-treatment-seeking voice-hearers were recruited from local spiritually oriented organizations. Both groups participated in a clinical assessment, and a semi-structured interview meant to explore the types of control exhibited and how it is fostered. Using Grounded Theory, we identified that participants from both groups exerted direct and indirect control over their voice-hearing experiences. Participants that developed a spiritual explanatory framework were more likely to exert direct control over the voice-hearing experiences than those that developed a pathologizing framework. Importantly, despite clear differences in explanatory framework and distress because of their experiences, both groups underwent similar trajectories to develop control and acceptance over their voice-hearing experiences. Understanding these factors will be critical in transforming control over voice-hearing experiences from a phenomenological observation to an actionable route for clinical intervention.
