The aim of this study was to assess whether the recently developed Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I) could be used to evaluate diet quality of a Mediterranean population. A cross-sectional nutritional survey was carried out in the Balearic Islands (Spain) between 1999 and 2000. Dietary information (replicated 24 h recall and a food frequency questionnaire), and socio-demographic and lifestyle data were collected from a representative sample of the population (n 1200: 498 males and 702 females) aged 16–65 years (response rate 77·22 %). The DQI-I was developed according to the method defined by Kim et al. (2003), and focused on four major aspects of a high-quality diet (variety, adequacy, moderation and overall balance). The percentage of adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern (MDP) was also calculated and correlation analysis was carried out between the DQI-I score and the percentage of adherence to the MDP. The total score of the DQI-I reached 43 % of the possible score, indicating that the Balearic diet was a poor-quality diet. Correlation analysis between the DQI-I scores and adherence to the MDP showed that the DQI-I subcategories protein, iron and calcium adequacy were negatively correlated with the MDP. Furthermore, moderation in empty calorie food consumption and overall balance subcategories were not significantly correlated with the MDP. Due to some methodological factors and cultural biases, the proposed DQI-I scoring system is not useful to evaluate the quality of this Mediterranean-type diet. Further research is needed to develop a new diet quality index adapted to the MDP.

The aim of this study was to assess whether the recently developed Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I) was useful to evaluate the diet quality of a young Mediterranean population. A cross-sectional nutritional survey was carried out in southern Spain (Granada-Andalucia) from 2002 to 2005. Dietary information (24 h recall and FFQ) and socio-demographic and lifestyle data were collected from a representative sample of the population (n 288, 44·1 % females and 55·9 % males) aged 6–18 years (mean 12·88 (sd 2·78) years). DQI-I was designed according to the method of Kim et al. modified by Tur et al. for Mediterranean populations. It focused on four main characteristics of a high-quality diet (variety, adequacy, moderation and overall balance). This young population from southern Spain obtained 56·31 % of the total DQI-I score, indicating a poor-quality diet. A higher score was associated with a longer breakfast and greater physical activity. The DQI-I may require further modification for application in Mediterranean populations, differentiating between olive oil and saturated fats, among other changes. Further research is needed to develop a new diet quality index adapted to the Mediterranean diet.

Abstract. Results of epidemiologic studies and clinical trials have shown that subjects following the Mediterranean diet had lower inflammatory markers such as homocysteine (Hcy). Therefore, the aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess female diet quality with the Mediterranean diet quality index (MDQI) and to determine the correlation between MDQI, homocysteine, folate and vitamin B12 levels in the blood. The study participants were 237 apparently healthy women (96 of reproductive age and 141 postmenopausal) between 25 and 93 years. For each participant, 24-hour dietary recalls for 3 days were collected, MDQI was calculated, and plasma Hcy, serum and erythrocyte folate and vitamin B12 levels were analysed. Total MDQI ranged from 8 to 10 points, which represented a medium-poor diet for the subjects. The strength of correlation using biomarkers, regardless of group type, age, gender and other measured parameters, was ranked from best (0.11) to worst (0.52) for olive oil, fish, fruits and vegetables, grains, and meat, in this order. Hcy levels showed the best response among all markers across all groups and food types. Our study shows significant differences between variables of the MDQI and Hcy levels compared to levels of folate and vitamin B12 in participants with medium-poor diet quality, as evaluated according to MDQI scores.

Latar belakang: Remaja yang berprofesi sebagai model sering merasa takut jika mengalami kenaikan berat badan memiliki kecenderungan membatasi asupan makan. Hal ini dapat meningkatkan risiko terjadinya gangguan makan dan anemia. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis hubungan antara gangguan makan dan kualitas diet dengan status anemia pada remaja putri di Modelling School.Metode: Penelitian observasional dengan desain cross-sectional melibatkan 55 remaja putri berumur 12-19 tahun yang dipilih secara consecutive sampling dan dilakukan di Sekolah Model Semarang. Kadar hemoglobin (Hb) diukur dengan metode Cyanmethemoglobin, gangguan makan menggunakan kuesioner Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale (EDDS), dan kualitas diet diukur dengan formulir food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), kemudian dihitung skor kualitas dietnya menggunakan panduan Diet Quality Index International (DQI-I). Analisis data menggunakan uji Chi Square. Hasil: Subjek yang mengalami anemia sebanyak 25 orang (45,5%). Gangguan makan ditemukan pada 29 subjek (52,7%) dengan 11 orang mengalami bulimia nervosa. Persentase remaja putri (63,6%) yang memiliki kualitas diet rendah pada penelitian ini lebih banyak dibandingkan dengan remaja (36,4%) yang memiliki kualitas diet tinggi. Hasil menunjukkan subjek (41,4%) yang anemia juga mengalami gangguan makan (p=0,243), dan subjek (45,7%) yang anemia memiliki kualitas diet yang rendah (p=0,959). Kualitas diet rendah (65,5%) ditemukan lebih banyak pada kelompok yang mengalami gangguan makan (p=0,866). Simpulan: Tidak ada hubungan antara gangguan makan dan kualitas diet dengan status anemia pada remaja putri di modelling school (p > 0,05)

Latar Belakang: Prestasi olahraga bulutangkis cenderung menurun beberapa tahun terakhir. Salah satu faktor yang mempengaruhi prestasi adalah daya tahan (endurance). Kualitas diet akan mempengaruhi daya tahan (endurance) sehingga seseorang dapat melakukan pekerjaan secara efektif dan efisien dalam waktu yang lama tanpa menimbulkan kelelahan yang berlebihan. Tujuan: Mengetahui hubungan antara kualitas diet dan daya tahan atlet bulutangkis remaja di Kota SemarangMetode: Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian cross sectional. Subjek adalah 60 atlet bulutangkis usia 12-18 tahun. Variabel perancu adalah aktivitas fisik dan persen lemak tubuh subjek. Pengukuran daya tahan dengan metode Multistage Fitness Test (MFT). Data yang dikumpulkan yaitu kebiasaan makan yang diambil menggunakan Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQFFQ) dan data aktivitas fisik menggunakan Physical Activity Quistionnaires for Adolescent (PAQ-A). Kualitas diet dinilai menggunakan kuisioner Diet Quality Index International (DQI-I). Data antropometri meliputi tinggi badan, berat badan, dan persen lemak tubuh. Uji kenormalan data dengan uji Kolmogorov-Smirnov dan  analisis data dengan uji korelasi Rank Spearman.Hasil: Terdapat 1,7% subjek yang memiliki kualitas diet baik. Sebagian besar atlet memiliki daya tahan yang cukup (35%). Persen lemak tubuh subjek sebagian besar tergolong optimal (61,7%). Tidak terdapat hubungan antara kualitas diet dan daya tahan (endurance) (r = 0,122, p=0,353). Tidak terdapat hubungan antara aktivitas fisik dan daya tahan (endurance) (r = 0,209, p= 0,109). Ada hubungan antara persen lemak tubuh dan daya tahan (endurance) ( r = -0,480, p=0,0001). Simpulan: Kualitas diet yang baik akan meningkatkan daya tahan (endurance), namun bersifat lemah dan secara statistik tidak berhubungan. Persen lemak tubuh yang optimal berkontribusi penting dalam menjaga daya tahan (endurance) atlet. Faktor perancu aktivitas fisik tidak mempengaruhi daya tahan (endurance).

AbstractObjectiveTo test the hypothesis that maternal psychological profiles relate to children’s quality of diet.DesignCross-sectional study. Mothers provided information on their health-related psychological factors and aspects of their child’s mealtime environment. Children’s diet quality was assessed using an FFQ from which weekly intakes of foods and a diet Z-score were calculated. A high score described children with a better quality diet. Cluster analysis was performed to assess grouping of mothers based on psychological factors. Mealtime characteristics, describing how often children ate while sitting at a table or in front of the television, their frequency of takeaway food consumption, maternal covert control and food security, and children’s quality of diet were examined, according to mothers’ cluster membership.SubjectsMother–child pairs (n 324) in the Southampton Initiative for Health. Children were aged 2–5 years.SettingHampshire, UK.ResultsTwo main clusters were identified. Mothers in cluster 1 had significantly higher scores for all psychological factors than mothers in cluster 2 (all P<0·001). Clusters were termed ‘more resilient’ and ‘less resilient’, respectively. Children of mothers in the less resilient cluster ate meals sitting at a table less often (P=0·03) and watched more television (P=0·01). These children had significantly poorer-quality diets (β=−0·61, 95 % CI −0·82, −0·40, P≤0·001). This association was attenuated, but remained significant after controlling for confounding factors that included maternal education and home/mealtime characteristics (P=0·006).ConclusionsThe study suggests that mothers should be offered psychological support as part of interventions to improve children’s quality of diet.

AbstractObjective:Little is known about the diet quality of preschool children in Canada. We adapted an established diet quality index for European preschool children to align with the Canadian context and applied the index to dietary data of 3-year-old children to assess patterns of diet quality.Design:Our diet quality index (DQI-C) consists of four components that align with Canada’s Food Guide (Vegetables and Fruit, Grain Products, Milk and Alternatives and Meat and Alternatives) and two components that account for less healthy intakes (Candy/Snacks, and Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSB)). The ratio between consumption v. recommended intakes is calculated for each component and summed to give a total score from 0 to 6.Setting:Alberta, Canada.Participants:The DQI-C was applied to FFQ data from 1260 3-year-old children.Results:Mean DQI-C was 3·69 (sd 0·6). Most children met recommendations for Vegetables and Fruit (73 %) and Meat and Alternatives (70 %); however, fewer met recommendations for Milk and Alternatives (38 %) and Grain Products (13 %). Children in the lowest quartile for DQI-C score consumed a mean of 82 g of Candy/Snacks and 193 g of SSB daily, whereas those in the highest quartile consumed 45 g/d and 17 g/d of Candy and Snacks and SSB, respectively.Conclusion:This DQI-C score is useful for ranking Canadian preschool children according to their overall diet quality. There is room for improvement for consumptions of Grain Products, Meat and Alternatives, Candy/Snacks and SSB, which could be a target for initiatives to improve diet quality of preschool children in Canada.

AbstractObjectiveTo assess the adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern in the population from a coastal region from north-east Spain and its relationship to diseases, applying the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index (M-DQI) validated by the use of several biomarkers.DesignCross-sectional nutrition survey.SettingPopulation-based random sample derived from the Catalan Nutrition Survey.SubjectsA total of 621 healthy adults.ResultsThe Catalan representative sample presented a mean M-DQI score of 6·6 (sd 2·3, median 7, range 0–14). The percentage of adherence to the Mediterranean diet was 53 %; 10 % of subjects showed high adherence to the Mediterranean diet, while only 2 % were categorized as poorest adherence. The plasma fatty acid profile of the Catalan sample progressed with perfect regularity throughout the index ranges. Both EPA and DHA presented a significant correlation to the M-DQI (r = −0·410 for EPA and −0·360 for DHA). A significant increase in palmitic, oleic and α-linolenic acids and a significant decrease in stearic, linoleic and arachidonic acids content were also observed. The mean values for the M-DQI according to the clinical characteristics of the Catalan sample were also calculated.ConclusionsThe M-DQI has been demonstrated a suitable tool for assessment of an individual’s nutritional status according to the Mediterranean dietary pattern and for clinical purposes. Although the current diet followed in Catalonia seems to agree with the main characteristics of the Mediterranean diet, the promotion of the Mediterranean pattern should be reinforced in the Catalan population, especially among young people.

Monitoring and assessing dietary intake may favor the promotion of healthy choices and the indexes that assess the quality of the diet contribute to this purpose. The Diet Quality Index associated with the Digital Food Guide (DQI-DFG) was developed from guidelines of the School of Public Health at Harvard University, adjusted for the Brazilian food habits. Based on new studies on prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases, the objective of this study was to improve and validate the DQI-DFG for a second version. The following psychometric properties were used: (a) content validation: consensus on healthy eating and DQI among experts; (b) construct validation: enhancement of a reference diet to determine recommended serving sizes and consumption ranges; correlation between each group score and energy value; comparative analyses between menu assessment by experts and DQI-DGF results to confirm the score criterion; (c) reliability: agreement between the result shown by the evaluators and the result presented by DQI-DFG; correlation between each food group score and total DQI score to understand the relationship between these variables. The energetic values do not influence the DQI score. There is a high correlation between the score attributed by experts and the result of DQI-DFG (r = 0.78 until r = 0.97). The Index components have a balanced score of influence in its final result (r = 0.49 until r = 0.10). Consensus result performed among experts legitimates the concepts that justify DQI-DFG. There was an agreement between menu quality evaluation by experts and the results shown by DQI-DFG.
