Purpose: The present study investigated the extent to which background knowledge of the French language could influence English vocabulary learning among EFL university students in Algeria. More specifically, the possible cross-linguistic influence in this context was researched in relation to the growth pattern of the receptive written vocabulary size across the three years of the undergraduate course. Methodology: A cross-sectional research design was used for a total number of 184 EFL Algerian university students. The written receptive vocabulary size was measured using Nation's Vocabulary Size Test (2007) which contained many words with similar orthographic forms as their French equivalents. A comparison between the results of the whole population made it possible to establish the progressive growth pattern from Year 1 to Year 3 of the degree course. Results: Besides a moderate increase of vocabulary size from one proficiency level to the other, and an expected decrease pattern of knowledge from the most frequent English words to the least frequent ones, the positive cross-linguistic influence of French cognates was highly significant as it led to the knowledge of words that were beyond the expected level of most participants. Conclusion/Implication: The facilitative effect of French cognates for EFL learners in Algerian universities is, therefore, an area that instructors and syllabus designers can make use of to maximize the vocabulary learning process.

Abstract: This study examined the use of vocabulary learning strategies (VLS) among EFL university students in Vietnam. The research involved 213 EFL university students, 61 second year students and 152 third year students at Vinh University. The study used mixed methods, including Schmitt (1997)’s VLS questionnaire, learners’ diaries and interviews. Results indicated that cognitive strategies were the most frequently used and social strategies, which are used to consolidate new words, are the least frequently used ones. The data from diaries and interviews also showed that there is a lack of organized practice of vocabulary learning among the participants. The purposes of the study were to examine technical university students’ tourism and hospitality English vocabulary learning achievement and the factors influencing their hospitality and tourism English vocabulary learning. The subjects were 62 students from a technical university in southern Taiwan. The instruments included one questionnaire called TARGETT questionnaire consisting of seven factors about learning motivation on hospitality and tourism English vocabulary and one English test called Professional Vocabulary Quotient Credential (PVQC) on hospitality and tourism. The subjects accepted a 40-hour vocabulary learning training course. Then, the subjects took a 50-minute PVQC test and 10-minute TARGETT questionnaire on December 22, 2015; the researchers collected the data from the questionnaire and PVQC test and analyzed the data by descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The results revealed that most of the subjects liked to learn hospitality and tourism English vocabulary, and found that learning hospitality and tourism English vocabulary was important for the subjects. The results also showed that male subjects had significantly different opinions from female ones in some factors of learning motivation. Moreover, female and male subjects significantly showed that teaching tasks, grouping activities, and evaluation had more effects on their hospitality and tourism English vocabulary learning. Finally, the researchers drew a conclusion based on the results and provided some teaching and research implications for the future.

This study was conducted to investigate the impact of portfolios and journals on Iranian Pre-university students’ vocabulary learning. Fifty female pre-university students who were studying General English as a part of their course syllabus at Tooba Pre-university Center of Tang Eram, Bushehr, Iran comprised the participants in the main phase of the study. This study adopted a convenience sampling procedure, since the real act of randomization was not feasible. The participants of the study were divided into two groups. The experimental group (N=25) received the treatment i.e. portfolios and journals, while the control group (N=25) underwent the traditional assessment. The results of data analyses indicated that the students in experimental group outperformed the students in control group in terms of their lexical knowledge. Moreover, the results of correlational analyses revealed that there was a strong positive correlation between the students’ lexical scores and their scores on motivation to alternative assessment in the experimental group. The results have some implications for EFL teachers, learners, and parents as well as for curriculum developers and syllabus designers.

Learning vocabulary is the fundamental step to learn a foreign language.
