The clinical and pathological course of 25 mammary tumors in rabbits has been described. The antecedent breast history and morphology of the growths allowed a natural classification into two distinct types, one of which was distinguished by a preexisting cystic mastitis and a papillary structure, while the other originated in clinically normal mammary tissue and was characterized by an adenomatous structure. The two types of neoplasia occurred almost exclusively in two family groups and heredity played a fundamental rôle both in the occurrence of the tumors and in the determination of tumor type. Endocrine changes, comparable with those found in animals after long continued administration of estrogenic substances, occurred in tumor-bearing rabbits and it was inferred that the spontaneous growths represented a natural counterpart of the experimental induction of neoplasia with estrone.

Mammary gland tumors are one of the most commonly diagnosed tumors in female dogs, with a reported prevalence ranging from 26 to 73% in Brazil. In recognition of the importance of these tumors veterinary researchers and clinicians in Brazil produced the first consensus statement regarding canine mammary tumors in 2010. The intention was to establish criteria for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. This study evaluated the methods of prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and determination of prognosis used by veterinarians in Brazil, and sought to quantify the number of veterinarians who were aware of the consensus statement. One hundred and three veterinary clinics participated in the study, 87.37% of which recommend early neutering as a preventative treatment for mammary tumors. For diagnosis, 100% of these use laboratory testing, 94.17% perform chest radiography, 78.64% incisional biopsies, 44.66% cytological analysis, and 13.59% immunohistochemical analysis. The most common surgical procedure is unilateral mastectomy (72.81%), and chemotherapy is performed in 49.51% of the clinics. Of the 103 clinics, 66.01% were aware of the consensus. Although knowledge of the consensus statement is widespread among veterinarians in Brazil, not all its recommendations are being followed. Preventive actions for canine mammary tumors are well established in most parts of the country. However, the consensus statement has had little influence on informing prognostic and therapeutic approaches, with a poor uptake of surgical removal of lymph nodes and immunohistochemical examination.

Disturbances in the epigenetic landscape by aberrant methylation of CpG islands can lead to inactivation of cancer-related genes in solid tumors. We analyzed the promoter methylation status of 6 genes previously reported as cancer-specific methylated (MCAM, SSBP2, NISCH, B4GALT1, KIF1A and RASSF1A) in 38 neural crest-derived tumors by quantitative methylation-specific real-time PCR (QMSP). The results demonstrated that the determination of the methylation status of RASSF1A is able to distinguish between normal and tumor samples in cutaneous melanomas, lung carcinoids and small bowel carcinoids. MCAM methylation levels were significantly higher in lung carcinoids tumors (p=0.001), suggesting that this alteration may represent a molecular biomarker in this tumor type.

The most useful diagnostic methods in the initial evaluation of horses with colic assess the morphological and functional status of the gastrointestinal tract and cardiovascular status. This evaluation is best achieved using a combination of clinical and laboratory data. Blood lactate concentration (BL) is one of these variables. BL rises mainly due to poor tissue perfusion and anaerobic glycolysis associated with shock, providing an indicator of both the severity of disease and its prognosis. A hand-held lactate meter, Accusport, provides a rapid (60 seconds), inexpensive dry-chemical-based determination of BL. This trial evaluated the Accusport's ability to provide BL data as an adjunct to the initial clinical evaluation of horses with colic. The accuracy of the Accusport was tested by evaluation of its interchangeability with the benchmark enzymatic kit evaluation of BL in a trial using data collected firstly from 10 clinically normal control horses and subsequently from 48 horses presented with signs of colic. The BL values were recorded together with the clinical variables of heart rate (HR), capillary refill time (CRT), haematocrit (Hct), and pain character and severity on the initial assessment of the colic horses. Information regarding choice of therapeutic management (medical or surgical) and eventual case outcome (full recovery or died/euthanased) was recorded. The Accusport was found to be interchangeable with the enzymatic kit for recording BL values in colic horses with BL <10 mmol/ , which is within the BL range associated with survival. The interchangeability of an additional, laboratory-based wet chemical assay for BL, the Stat 7 was simultaneously evaluated for the colic and control horses. The Stat 7 was found to be interchangeable with the enzymatic kit for BL determination of colic horses. No linear associations between BL values with HR, CRT, Hct or pain assessment were observed. No relationship with either selection of therapeutic method or eventual case outcome was observed. All horses with BL >8 mmol/ died or were euthanased.

CD44+/CD24– phenotype has been used to identify human and canine mammary cancer stem-like cells. In canine mammary tumors, CD44+/CD24– phenotype has been associated with high grade and lymph node infiltration. However, several studies have reported opposing results regarding the clinical significance of phenotypic groups formed by the combination of CD44 and CD24 in both human and canine mammary tumors. So far, no study has investigated the correlation between these phenotypes and survival in dogs. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression and distribution of CD44 and CD24 in canine mammary carcinomas and to correlate them with histological diagnosis and survival in a well-characterized cohort. Immunohistochemistry was performed in 96 mammary carcinomas with antibodies against CD44 and CD24. Expression of CD44+ and CD44+/CD24– phenotype was detected in 75 of 96 (78%) and 63 of 96 (65.6%) carcinomas, respectively. Their expression was associated with tumor type, occurring more often in tubular complex carcinomas than in solid carcinomas. CD44+/CD24– phenotype was associated with a better overall survival ( P = .001). CD24+ expression was detected in 52 of 96 tumors (54%) and CD44–/CD24+ phenotype in 39 of 96 tumors (40.6%). Both were associated with poor clinicopathological parameters (high grade, and emboli). No correlation with overall survival was observed. CD44+/CD24– expression was associated with a better prognosis and occurred at high frequency and high level, indicating that this phenotype is not suitable to detect cancer stem cells in canine mammary carcinomas. Although further studies are needed, our results suggest that CD24 may constitute a valuable marker of poor prognosis for canine mammary carcinomas.

The mean change in the pH of 134 undiluted ejaculates of clinically normal bulls was –0·302 ± 0·027 after 1 hr. storage at 37°C. The greater the pH. change, the lower was the initial pH and the higher was the initial motility and the number of spermatozoa per c.mm. The greater the decrease in pH the poorer was the motility after incubation. The motility was better maintained in semen diluted with egg-phosphate medium, compared with undiluted semen, which agreed with the smaller pH change in this medium. There was no evidence of a relationship between the pH change and the motility after incubation and the period of time for which a high motility was maintained during storage. It is suggested that the determination of the initial pH and the pH change after 1 hr. incubation may provide a useful and accurate evaluation of the semen of the bull.

Plasma levels and urinary excretion of oxypurines – hypoxanthine and xanthine – were evaluated by reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography in 13 patients affected by gastric tumors and in 19 colorectal tumor-bearing patients. Preliminary results indicate higher values of urinary xanthine and an increase in the xanthine/hypoxanthine ratio in cancer patients. The increase was not generalized to all subjects, and did not appear related either to the stage of the disease or to CEA values. The limits within which the determination of urinary oxypurines can be employed as a tumor marker are discussed.

Compounds isolated from Agaricus blazei Murill represent a group of promising natural immunomodulators for use in the treatment of neoplasms. We have evaluated the serum biochemical profile of healthy and Ehrlich tumor-bearing mice treated with different extracts of A. blazei. Total, supernatant, and polysaccharide extracts of A. blazei were obtained from suspensions (at acidic or neutral pH) kept in a water bath at 60 °C or in an ultrasonic bath at 37 °C. After oral administering the extracts to mice for 21 days, blood samples were collected for determination of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), creatine kinase (CK), urea, total protein, albumin, globulins, and alpha-, beta- and gamma-globulin fractions. The presence of the tumor led to a significant increase in serum CK and AST activities and in the concentrations of total globulin and the gamma-globulin fraction, and to a decrease in the albumin and alpha2-globulin levels. The polysaccharide extracts of A. blazei reduced the serum AST and ALT activities, probably due to a hepatoprotective effect. In addition, polysaccharide and supernatant extracts inhibited the tumor-induced increase in gamma-globulin levels. Thus, the supernatant and polysaccharide fractions of the extract of A. blazei have potential for use in complementary antineoplastic treatments.

Background: AUB is any abnormal uterine bleeding in the absence of any palpable pelvic pathology and demonstrable extra genital causes. AUB is responsible for 10% of gynaecological complaints. Thyroid hormone is very important to affect the menstrual pattern. The objective of this study was to evaluate thyroid function test in women with AUB and to assess the menstrual pattern in women with thyroid dysfunction.Methods: The present study was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Laxmi Narasimha Hospital, Hanamkonda, Hyderabad, Telangana, India 80 women of reproductive age group between 15-45 years women with menstrual disorders like menorrhagia, oligomenorrhea, hypomenorrhea, polymenorrhea, metrorrhagia, and amenorrhea. Quantitative determination of T3, T4, and TSH by CLIA estimated in autoanlyser.Results: About 80 women participated in the study in which Most of the subjects belong to 26-30 years of age group. Maximum patients i.e. 41 (51.2%) patients were para one to 2. Commonest cause bleeding pattern was menorrhagia 41.25%. 15 apparently normal patients with AUB belonged to the category of subclinical hypothyroidism (15%). Hormonal levels revealing profound hypothyroidism in patients without any symptoms was present in only 10% of cases. 2.5% of cases had hyperthyroidism though they were clinically normal. Patients who were sub-clinically hypothyroid were maximally presenting as polymenorrhoea (50%) and menorrhagia (12.1%) and only 6.27% of patients had oligomenorrhoea. Patients who were profound hypothyroid were predominantly having polymenorrhagia (83.3%) and (62.5%) of patients had oligomenorrhoea.Conclusions: So, biochemical evaluation of thyroid functioning should be made mandatory in all provisionally diagnosed cases of AUB to detect thyroid dysfunction.

Samples of foremilk were collected from 261 clinically normal glands of 150 ewes, and tested using the California mastitis test (CMT). Further samples were collected from 195 of these glands for determination of automated somatic cell counts (SCC), and from 60 of these glands for bacteriological assessment. The sensitivity and specificity of CMT for detecting samples with SCC above different threshold levels and for CMT and SCC in determining bacteriological status were evaluated using two-graph receiver operating characteristics (TG-ROC). Milk samples were obtained subsequently from ten CMT positive, and five CMT negative first- and second-lactation ewes. Samples were cultured using a variety of media, incubation temperatures and atmospheric conditions, immediately after collection, and 1 week after storage at 4°C and −21°C. Results suggested that CMT is best used as a diagnostic test for ovine subclinical mastitis (SCM) with a cut-off of 3 (distinct gel formation), and that automated SCC thresholds of >1200×103 cells/ml are appropriate, especially where low prevalences are expected (e.g. <5%). Additionally, this study showed that routine bacteriological methods were appropriate for isolation of most species of pathogen responsible for ovine SCM, but storage of samples prior to culture, either at 4°C or −21°C, was detrimental to the isolation of several of these organisms.
