Impacts of participatory variety selection in wheat on agro-economic changes like adoption of new wheat varieties and production technologies, income and attitude change of the wheat farmers, etc. are presented in the paper. Participatory variety selection was conducted at 12 villages of four districts in Bangladesh. Base line information from the villages was collected through participatory rural appraisal and household survey in 2002. Data on agro-economic changes were collected through household survey in 2005. Impacts were assessed from the difference of the data of two surveys. The area of the check variety Kanchan came down from 97.8% (covered in 2002) to 57% in the working villages in 2005. Varietal diversity was increased remarkably and seven varieties were found to cultivate in 2004-05. The new varieties occupied 43% of the wheat areas. Seed preservation by farmers was increased remarkably and 208 tons seeds of new varieties were preserved by them in 2004-05. When 60% seeds of their total requirements were collected from Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation in 2002, then, 100% seeds were used from farmers’ own source in 2004-05. There were remarkable changes in production technology adoption, sources of agricultural knowledge, attitude and income changes. Farmers’ income was increased to Tk. 11148/ha due to cultivation of new varieties and use of recommended production technologies. Participatory variety selection approach in wheat was found very useful to increase wheat production in the working villages. It is estimated that over 75% of rural households in Tanzania depend on common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) for daily subsistence. Recently, farmers have been increasingly looking for improved bean varieties which meet specific market demands characterized with yellow seed colour, early maturing and/or adapted to local agro-ecologies. Study focused on assessing the performance of bean varieties for agronomic traits through variety and environmental interactions by identifying high yielding, ealy maturing and market demand seed classes among the tested materials. For testing adaptability and stability, experiments were conducted in low to high altitudes for two consecutive years using randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replicates. Eight common bean varieties KG98, Navy line 1, KATB9, SABRYT, KATB1, Lyamungu 85, JESCA and Calima Uyole were used. Absolute, matrix and pairwise ranking were used integratively for farmers’ and researcher’s assessment and selection. Participatory variety selection approach gave farmers an opportunity to assess and select varieties from a range of near finished materials in the breeding process. As part of the Farmers’ participatory variety selection process, seventeen participants as among the consumers 46% being women were selected to participate in a focused group discussion. Results revealed that, days to flowering, days to maturity and yield across the tested environments showed significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) as well as yield and diseases interactions for genotype, environment and season. Field data and farmers’ assessment data showed two varieties of KATB1 (yellow round) and KATB9 (red round) for better performance (high yield) and grain preference respectively. It showed that, early maturing; seed type and marketability varieties are highly demanded by bean farmers in Tanzania.

Variety selection in perennial pasture crops involves identifying best varieties from data collected from multiple harvest times in field trials. For accurate selection, the statistical methods for analysing such data need to account for the spatial and temporal correlation typically present. This paper provides an approach for analysing multi-harvest data from variety selection trials in which there may be a large number of harvest times. Methods are presented for modelling the variety by harvest effects while accounting for the spatial and temporal correlation between observations. These methods provide an improvement in model fit compared to separate analyses for each harvest, and provide insight into variety by harvest interactions. The approach is illustrated using two traits from a lucerne variety selection trial. The proposed method provides variety predictions allowing for the natural sources of variation and correlation in multi-harvest data.

<p>ABSTRAK<br />Kelapa Genjah kopyor asal Pati, Jawa Tengah merupakan<br />kekayaaan hayati asli Indonesia dengan nilai ekonomi tinggi. Informasi<br />keragaman genetik kelapa kopyor masih terbatas. Data keragaman<br />morfologi dan genetik diperlukan dalam program pemuliaan kelapa<br />kopyor. Penelitian ini mempelajari keragaman tiga varietas kelapa genjah<br />kopyor asal Pati yang telah dilepas berdasarkan karakter morfologi,<br />kuantitas endosperma, dan keragaman alel marka SSR. Penelitian<br />dilakukan di Pati dan di Laboratorium Plant Molecular Biology,<br />Departemen Agronomi dan Hortikultura, IPB. Evaluasi dilakukan terhadap<br />tiga populasi kelapa Genjah kopyor (hijau, coklat, dan kuning) dengan 30<br />tanaman sampel untuk setiap populasi. Rataan data morfologi digunakan<br />untuk menyusun dendogram. Kuantitas endosperma diamati pada satu<br />buah kelapa kopyor per tanaman yang dievaluasi. Karakteristik<br />endosperma dikelompokkan sesuai kategori yang telah ditetapkan. Untuk<br />setiap populasi, analisis marka dengan lima pasang primer SSR dilakukan<br />pada 10 tanaman sampel. Data yang didapat digunakan untuk menentukan<br />keragaman genetik kelapa Genjah kopyor asal Pati. Hasil pengamatan<br />menunjukkan keragaman morfologis dan alel SSR antar tanaman dalam<br />varietasnya (keragaman intra-varietas) rendah. Sebaliknya, keragaman<br />morfologis dan alel SSR antar varietasnya tinggi. Kuantitas endosperma<br />kelapa Genjah kopyor asal Pati bervariasi antara skor 1–6. Keragaman<br />genetik yang rendah dalam varietas dan tinggi antar ketiga varietas (coklat,<br />hijau, dan kuning) memperkuat pelepasan ketiganya sebagai varietas lokal.<br />Selain itu, keragaman genetik antar tanaman dalam varietas yang rendah<br />mendukung penggunaan ketiga varietas lokal sebagai tetua dalam program<br />perakitan varietas kelapa kopyor unggul baru. Tetua yang dipilih dapat<br />diseleksi intra-varietas berdasarkan persentase buah kopyor per tandan<br />dan skor kuantitas endosperma yang tinggi.<br />Kata kunci: Keragaman morfologis, keragaman intra dan antar varietas,<br />kuantitas endosperma</p><p>ABSTRACT<br />Kopyor dwarf coconuts are mutants from Pati, Central Java having<br />high economic values. However, morphological and genetic diversities of<br />this coconut were still limited. Morphological and genetic diversity data<br />are needed for breeding program. The research objectives were to evaluate<br />intra and inter-specific diversity based on morphology, endosperm<br />quantity, and SSR alleles. Field evaluations were conducted in Pati while<br />laboratory activities were at Plant Molecular Biology Laboratory,<br />Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, IPB. Three populations of<br />kopyor dwarf varieties (brown, green, and yellow) were evaluated. Thirty<br />trees were sampled for each population. The average of morphological<br />data were used to construct cluster analysis. Endosperm quantity was<br />scored (0 – 9) based on a single nut sample. Ten palms were analyzed<br />using five SSR loci for each population and used to determine genetic<br />diversity of populations. Results of observations indicated intra-variety<br />morphological and SSR allele variations among kopyor dwarf was low.<br />However, inter-variety variations were high. The endosperm quantity<br />scores among kopyor dwarf coconut ranged from 1–6. The low intra-<br />variety and high inter-variety variations among the three kopyor dwarf<br />coconut supported their release as different local varieties. Moreover, the<br />low intra-variety phenotypic and genotypic diversities among kopyor<br />brown, green, and yellow dwarf coconut support their use as parents for<br />new and superior kopyor coconut variety development in the future. For<br />such purpose, however, it is necessary to conduct intra-variety selection to<br />identify desirable parents based on high kopyor fruit percentage per bunch<br />and for high kopyor endosperm quantity.<br />Key words: Morphological diversity, intra and inter variety diversities,<br />quantity, endosperm</p>

Abstract This chapter discusses planting-seed quality, variety selection, plant population, planting date and row spacing. The goal of crop management is to create the perfect environment for the growth of the crop, where the perfect environment is characterized by the absence of stress or other factors that reduce crop growth and yield. This goal may be impossible or uneconomical to achieve, but that does not detract from its usefulness as a goal. The management practices discussed in this chapter are fundamental components of grain production systems that contribute to reaching the goal of the perfect environment. There are many management options available to an individual producer; selecting the best combination is not always easy and it may be constrained by factors outside the realm of the physiological processes controlling crop yield.
