Abstract Aornakan I and Kuta Tinggi villages are villages located in Pak-pak Bharat Regency, North Sumatra Province. Currently, the villagers are planting Uncaria gambir and Coffea arabica. This study aimed to evaluate land for cofffe plantations on land overgrown with gambier in Pak-pak Bharat Regency. Sampling was carried out purposively on land overgrown with gambier plants in Aornakan I Village, Pargetteng-getteng Sengkut Sub-district and Kuta Tinggi Village, Salak Sub-district, Pakpak Bharat Regency. The evaluation of land suitability for coffee uses the matching method, namely by analysing laboratory data and data measured in the field with the characteristics of the land for cofffe. The results showed that the land evaluation for Coffea arabica was marginally suitable (S3) with the limiting factor was the root zone media (rc) in terms of soil texture.

Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) is Sapindaceae family, commonly found in agroforestry land, owned by the community in Langkat District, North Sumatra Province as One of Multy Purpose Tree Species. This study aimed to asses and map the distribution land suitability for N. lappaceum. This research was conducted in Gunung Ambat Village and Simpang Kuta Buluh Village, Sei Bingai Sub District, Langkat Regency using survey method. The soil samples data was collected in the field based on the land unit. Land suitability assessment was evaluated using matching method. To map the distribution of land suitability, the Geographic Information System (GIS) was used. Global Positioning System (GPS) also was used in this study to record the coordinate points of each soil sample from the field. The results indicate that the actual land suitability classes for N. lappaceum were dominated by moderately suitable (S2) (97.56%) in Gunung Ambat Village and moderately suitable (S2) (52.92%) in Simpang Kuta Buluh Village. The water availability (wa) and root zone medium (rc) were the dominant limiting factor in this area.

Land evaluation is one of the most important tools for integrated land use management for sustainable agricultural and land use planning. The aim of this study is to evaluate the land suitability for current land use in akkar plain- Tartous Governorate. Depending on the elevation and land use, nine soil profiles representing the main physiographic units have been chosen. Soil samples were collected for conducting some chemical and physical analyses such as: soil texture (sand%, silt% and clay%), the content of organic matter OM, Cation Exchange Capacity CEC (cmol(+)/kg -1clay). The results of the soil analysis showed that the soil texture was Clay, and the pH values were between 7.13-8.5. Furthermore, The cation exchange capacity were ranging from (12-33) (cmol(+)/kg -1clay). Results of land evaluation showed that the limiting factors either fertility factors such as high pH in the villages of Beit-kamouna, Majdaloun-albaher and Dier-hbash, or physical factors such as shallowness depth of soil. The study concluded that the suitability class ranged from S2 to N2, which emphasis the importance of reconsidering the type of land use in the study area.

Land suitability assessment for Lansium domesticum cultivation on agroforestry land using matching method and geographic information system. Biodiversitas 21: 3683-3690. Lansium domesticum is one of the multipurpose tree species (MPTS) and is commonly found on agroforestry lands in Sumatra. This study aimed to evaluate the actual land suitability classes for L. domesticum and to map the potential land suitability for the species using matching method and geographic information system (GIS). The study was conducted in Sei Bingai Sub-district, Langkat District, North Sumatra, Indonesia. A survey was conducted to collect soil samples based on land units. Land unit information was obtained by overlaying soil map, land-use map, and slope map. Land suitability was evaluated based on the matching method and GIS was used to map the distribution of land suitability. The results showed that both the actual and potential land suitability classes based on matching approach for L. domesticum were moderately suitable (S2) which accounted for 88.95% of total land and marginally suitable (S3) which accounted for 11.05%. Availability of water (wa), erosion hazard (eh), root-zone medium (rc), oxygen availability (oa), and nutrient retention (nr) were the dominant limiting factors in this area. The most difficult constraints to manage were root-zone medium and water availability. The results of this study suggest that the development of L. domesticum in Sei Bingai is possible although it requires some land improvements to deal with the limiting factors.

A decrease in the area of soybean farming has an effect on reducing soybean production from year to year so that it has not been able to meet the needs of national soybean consumption. Land suitability assessment is an effort to be able to optimize land use. In the process of assessing land suitability manually, it is considered inaccurate. The purpose of this study was to determine the land suitability class for soybean plants. The land suitability classification system used is the FAO land suitability classification classified at the sub-class level. Land suitability evaluation uses a matching system, as well as comparing the characteristics of land with plant growing community formulated in the technical evaluation of land guidelines for agricultural commodities. In the matching process Leibig's minimum law is used to determine the limiting factors that will affect the suitability of the class and sub-class of the land. Requirements for growing plants become kiteria in conformity evaluation. The results showed that the limiting factors of land suitability for soybean plants that had to be improved were temperature, rainfall, soil texture, C-Organic, N-Total and P-Available soil. The limiting factor of temperature and soil texture cannot be improved so that the marginal fit class (S3) on actual land suitability remains marginal fit (S3) in terms of potential land suitability.

Land evaluation is an assessment of the potential of land resources. The results of land evaluation will provide information on the best use of it which will lead to expected value of production. This study aimed to determine the level of suitability of the cocoa plantations in Bantaeng Regency using the FAO and Sys methods; make a map of the actual and potential land suitability. The results of the analysis showed that the actual cocoa land suitability of the FAO method was presented in distribution points according to marginal (S3rn) with limiting factor of rooting media and nutrients availability. While the actual land suitability analysis of the cocoa Sys method was not suitable (N1cSf) with climate limiting factors, the soil physical properties and soil fertility. Based on the limiting factors the physical properties of the two methods, there were similarities in effective depth (FAO) and soil depth (Sys), S3 parameters according to FAO and N1 according to Sys. The limiting factor for the soil chemical properties of the two methods was also the same, the availability of S3 (FAO) nutrients, while the (Sys) method was the soil fertility N1.

Abstrak.  Komoditas kopi identik dengan kehidupan masyarakat Aceh Tengah, karena sebagian besar penduduk di wilayah dataran tinggi ini menggantungkan hidupnya dari komoditas kopi. Evaluasi kesesuaian lahan pada tanaman kopi Arabika organik sangat penting untuk mengoptimalkan produktivitas tanaman tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan kelas kesesuaian lahan aktual di Kecamatan Pegasing dengan analisis lahan seluas 7.800,69 ha adalah sangat sesuai (S1) seluas 2.851,28 ha (36,55%), cukup sesuai (S2) 3.616,56 ha (46,36%) dan tidak sesuai (N) seluas 1.332,85 ha (18,72%) dengan faktor pembatas terberat ketersediaan air (wa) pada semua SPL, resistensi hara (nr) pada SPL 1, 3 dan 4 serta kemiringan lereng pada semua SPL.Evaluation of Land Suitability on Organic Arabica  Coffee Plants (Coffea arabica L.) Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Pegasing District Middle of Aceh RegencyAbstract. Coffee commodities are identical to the life of the people of Middle Aceh, because most of the population in this highland region depends on the commodity of coffee. Evaluation of land suitability in organic Arabica coffee plants is very important to optimize the productivity of these crops. The results showed the actual land suitability class in Pegasing District with an analysis of an area of 7,800.69 ha was very suitable (S1) covering an area of 2.851,28 ha (36,55%), quite suitable (S2) 3.616,56 ha (46,36%) and incompatible (N) covering an area of 1,332.85 ha (18.72%) with the heaviest limiting factor of water availability (wa) in all SPL, nutrient resistance (nr) in SPL 1, 3 and 4 and slope slope in all SPL.

Potential land resources can be expected through land evaluation activities. This study aims to evaluate the suitability of Tompobulu Subdistrict of Bantaeng Regency for the development of pepper plant (Piper nigrum L). This research was conducted in Tompobulu Sub-district of Bantaeng Regency which started from March to July 2016. This research used qualitative method and to determine land suitability using simple limiting factor approach. Determination of observation points based on the overlapping results of the baseline maps that resulted in 6 units of observation (soil profile). Production data and management of pepper crop obtained from farmers of respondents amounted to 10 people. The result of the study shows that the climate type of the research area according to Oldeman is classified as B2 with the actual land suitability class which is quite suitable (S2) with 3,657 Ha and the marginal fit (S3) with 3,023 Ha with rainfall limiting factor, soil depth, Slope, and surface rocks whereas the suitability class is quite suitable (S2) with an area of 6,160 Ha and corresponding marginally (S3) with an area of 520 Ha with rainfall and soil depth limiting factors. The potential of pepper plant development in Tompobulu Sub-district of Bantaeng Regency is quite large indicated by the percentage of land area that is quite suitable (S2) (82.40%).

Peanut is a plant that has an important role in land and has a high selling value. Therefore it is necessary to take appropriate steps to develop peanut cultivation in the Panasen Sub-watershed by knowing the level of land suitability. The problems faced by the community are 1) lack of interest in the community to plant peanuts, 2) land-use change from agricultural land to lodging land 3) land evaluation has never been carried out for peanut plants in the area. The study used a land unit approach supported by soil analysis, plant growth requirements, and matching. The results showed that the research area was classified as suitable for peanut plants with a suitability class S2 (quite suitable) with a total of 4 land units, namely S2rfns (945.41 ha), S2sn (1675.15 ha), S2srn (938.05 ha), S2sn (13.45 ha) and class suitability of S3 (according to marginal) with 2 land units, namely S3s (12.95 ha), S3s (15.67 ha). The limiting factors for suitability class S2 are root media (r), nutrient retention (f), nutrient availability (n) and terrain (s). The limiting factor for suitability class S3 is the field (s). The limiting factor for N1 land suitability is nutrient availability (n), root media (r) and terrain (s). The limiting factors for conformity class N2 are the field (s) and the rooting medium (r).

In order to support the self-sufficiency of food, especially rice, the government made special efforts to increase rice production in several ways, such as increased production, improved cropping index, and the expansion of planting area. In relation to the increase in crop production, data and information of land resource is necessary for optimal land use, focused and efficient through the surveying and mapping of land resources. Land surveying and mapping activities carried out in Majene Regency on a scale of 1: 50,000. Its objective was to determine the land suitability for food crops, especially lowland rice and upland rice in Majene Regency, West Sulawesi to support self-sufficiency in rice. Land evaluation results indicate that the suitability of land for rice crops of the total land area of 91,322 ha survey are as follows: (a) land that is quite appropriate (S2) for lowland rice area of 6,259 ha (6.85%) consists of two subclasses, namely S2wa an area of 5,552 ha (6.08%) by a factor limiting the availability of water (moderate rainfall), and S2wa, eh area of 707 ha (0.77%) by a factor limiting the availability of water and slopes of 3-8%; (b) land that is quite appropriate (S2) for upland rice area of 4,957 ha (5.42%), consists of two subclasses, namely S2na an area of 4,250 ha (4.65%) by a factor limiting the availability of nutrients low-medium, and S2na, eh area of 707 ha (0.77%) with the limiting factor being the availability of nutrients and low-slope 3-8%; while land classified in accordance marginal (S3) for upland rice area of 1,816 ha (1.99%), consists of two subclasses, namely S3rc an area of 1,302 ha (1.43%) with limiting factors impeded drainage, and S3eh an area of 514 ha (0.56%) with limiting factor willayah wavy shape/slope of 8-15%; and (c) land that is classified as not suitable (N) area of 84,227-84,741 ha or approximately 92.23 to 92.79% with a limiting factor slopes > 15%, very shallow soil, drainage severely hampered, and the danger of sulfidic materials.

Jurnal Lahan Suboptimal : Journal of Suboptimal Lands 9(2): 208-217.In General, the problem of shallot commodities development was still used common farming without considering land suitability and other specific soil condition including aspect cultivation. The objective of this study was to clasify several lands characteristics for shallots cultivation and to observe earthworm (Lumbriscus terrestris) population based on their land suitability classes. The methodology used was land evaluation approach and field observation. This study was performed during  rainy season in 2018 at three locations with different soils, namely, peat soils/Histosol (IST), buried soil of Quartzipsamment above peat soils (ENT), and dry land of Dystropept (EPT). The population of earthworms is obtained by digging up an area of 1 m2 with depth of 20 cm at in four places of location of study. The calculation of earthworms is conducted by hand sorting. The results showed that the highest land suitability class at EPT S3tr, rt, nr, while for other locations are not suitable. The location of IST is classified into N3fb with several limiting such as flooding hazard during rainy season, while for ENT location, classified into Nrt, limiting factor is rough texture. High suitability class is not identical with high earthworm population density. Cultivation aspect that is able to increase soil pH become neutral condition and lower pesticide application affect earthworm populations. ENT locations that have neutral soil pH with lower pesticides applcation have the highest earthworm populations. Earthworm population density from high to low involve ENT> IST> EPT or 74> 33> 31 tails/m2.
