Abstract In the long term, fungi attacks will cause a decrease in the quality of corn during storage. In this case, Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus have become a serious concern related to food safety because of their ability to produce aflatoxins which are toxic to humans and animals. Nowadays, feed industries use fungicides to control fungal infections before the storage period due to their affordability, but the chemical residues are detrimental to our health. Therefore, an alternative method was needed to prevent and control fungi and aflatoxin formation in corn. One of the potential methods to apply is the gaseous ozonization. This research was conducted to investigate the potential of ozone in preventing fungal attacks and aflatoxin formation in corn, assuring that the corn quality can be maintained during the storage period. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of ozone on maintaining the quality of corn during storage, especially to reduce fungi colonies and aflatoxin formation. The experimental design used in this study was a completely randomized design with two treatment factors, namely temperature (20, 30, and 40°C) and exposure time (30 and 60 minutes). Corn quality parameters observed include moisture content, total fungal, moldy kernels, damaged kernels, and aflatoxin (AFB1, AFB2, AFG1, AFG2) contamination. The results showed that ozone treatment had an effect on reducing total fungal and aflatoxin contamination in corn, however, it had no effect on the moisture content, moldy kernels, and damaged kernels of corn. The optimum effect was obtained when the ozonization was conducted at a temperature of 20°C for 60 minutes exposure time, which results in the highest reduction in total fungal and total aflatoxin contamination of 36.77% and 92.45% respectively.

The methodology in Latvia forest industry provide to determine the quality of energy chips only in long- term storage places before selling. Due to the lack of hard empirical data about the quality parameters of energy chips in different phases of manufacturing process, this research paper consists of: - the identification and analyses of the factors that influenced the values of energy chips quality features such as: bulk density, moisture content, ash content, higher and lower heating value according to actual moisture content and per dry mass of the chips; - the methodology for determination the quality parameters of energy chips by analysis the wood moisture content and by choice the method of the manufacturing of energy chips.

Seeds of native forest species for food and seedling production have a growing demand that impacts the need for studies involving seed storage in order to maintain good levels of germination quality. Thus, scientific analyzes that explore the physiological potential of the seeds of these species are necessary, especially for the pink pepper (Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi.), a species used as an alternative source of income for traditional communities and which has been arousing interest due to the consumption of its fruits as a condiment in the national and international market. This work aimed to assess the physiological quality of pink pepper seeds according to the storage period and seed size. The seeds came from a rural settlement, a pioneer in the extraction of pink pepper, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The seeds were evaluated for moisture content, germination, first count, length and dry weight of the germinated seedlings, during the period of time that they remained stored and the size of the seeds. The results allowed to conclude that: i) the germinative percentage of the stored pink pepper seeds decreased over the months; ii) the moisture content of the seeds decreased over the months evaluated iii) the different sizes of seeds did not show differences in germination and storage time and iv) values of length and dry weight of the seedlings did not differ according to the period of storage.

Alstroemeria flowers have shown great importance in the world trade of cut flowers due mainly to its beauty and wide variety of colors. However, the durability of its inflorescences is usually hampered by the rapid yellowing of the leaves, which impairs their decorative quality. Cut flowers require the use of technologies to improve postharvest quality and floral longevity. This research aimed to study the postharvest conservation of inflorescences of Alstroemeria cv. Ajax at different storage temperatures. Floral stems were placed in containers with distilled water and stored at four temperatures (4, 8, 12, and 22ºC) for 12 days. The following analyses were performed: fresh mass variation, respiratory activity, relative water content, soluble and reducing carbohydrate contents, polyphenol-oxidase and peroxidase enzymes, pigments (anthocyanin and carotenoids), and longevity. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design, the results were submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA), and the effect of treatments submitted to F-test. Significant differences were compared using the least significant difference (LSD) at 95% confidence interval (p ≤ 0. 05). The temperatures of 8 and 12ºC were effective in maintaining the postharvest quality of inflorescences during storage period, as they remained turgid due to transpiration reduction caused by low temperatures, and longevity reaching 46 and 22 days, respectively.

Laranjas da variedade Pêra, previamente armazenadas durante três dias, com e sem etileno foram pulverizadas com Imazalil, Tiabendazol e a mistura de ambos, formulados ou não com cera. Em seguida, foram mantidas durante 25 dias a 4ºC ± 2ºC/90% ± 5% de umidade relativa, sendo avaliados parâmetros de qualidade da laranja, antes e ao final do armazenamento. Com exceção do atributo cor não ocorreram diferenças estatisticamente significativas nos demais parâmetros químicos e físico-químicos, independente da exposição ao etileno. O etileno foi eficiente no desverdecimento de laranjas, sem comprometer seus atributos de qualidade, e o tratamento posterior com cera contribuiu para manter inalterado o padrão de cor obtido. EVALUATION OF THE QUALITY OF PÊRA ORANGE FRUIT AFTER STORAGE IN ETHYLENE Abstract Oranges of the variety Pêra previously stored during three days with and without ethylene were sprayed with Imazalil, Thiabendazole and a mixture of both fungicides, formulated with and without wax. Following this treatment the fruits were stored during 25 days at 4ºC ± 2ºC / 90% ± 5% of relative humidity, parameters related to orange quality were evaluated before and after the storage period. With exception of the attribute color, no significative statistically differences were observed in the chemical and physical-chemical parameters, independent of the exposure to ethylene. The ethylene was effective for the degreening of orange with no action on the quality parameters. The further treatment with wax contributed to maintain the pattern of colour unchanged.

A 3 × 4 factorial design experiment was conducted to determine digestibility coefficients (DC) of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), crude fat (CF), gross energy (GE) and amino acids (AA) in raw ground silver hake (RGSH), acid (ASHS) and fermented (FSHS) silver hake silages for mink. The ASHS was prepared with the addition of 2.5% (wt:wt) formic acid (85% concentration) and 200 ppm antioxidant (ethoxyquin) to the raw ground fish. The FSHS was produced with the addition of 1% Marisil® (Finn Sugar), 15% extruded wheat and 1% (wt:wt) formic acid (conc. 85%) to the raw ground fish. Twelve mature standard type male mink were confined to metabolism cages during the digestibility trial, which consisted of three experimental periods comprised of a 6-d adjustment period, followed by a 5-d collection period. Based on the total collection (TC) method and with graded levels (0, 15, 30 and 45%) of the test feedstuffs in the experimental diets, nutrient digestibilities in the pure feedstuffs were determined using a mathematical regression technique. The apparent digestibility (AD) of DM, CP, CF and GE were RGSH: 88.4, 93.6, 99.2 and 94.7%; ASHS: 90.6, 85.8, 96.1 and 87.2% and FSHS: 77.7, 84.5, 99.2 and 86.1%, respectively. The AD of all the AAs, except proline, in the RGSH was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that in the ASHS and FSHS. A quality evaluation of the silages was conducted in a completely randomized design with two replications to determine storage stability of the silages, on 10 different sampling days, (3 sampling days for AAs), over the storage period. Quality of the silages was stable up to 90 days for the ASHS and 180 days FSHS based on increases in pH and total volatile nitrogen (TVN) content and decreases in N and AA content. The silver hake feedstuffs would provide a good source of highly digestible nutrients for mink and should be considered as opportunity feeds for these animals. This research was aimed to determine the exact glycerol concentration in the making of edible coating to coat the tomatoes so that the shelf life is extended and the quality is maintained. A Completely Randomized Design with one factor (RAL): glycerol concentration (without coating, 10%, 30%, 50%) was applied. The observed variables were weight shrinkage, color, hardness, total acid and vitamin C. Results showed that for 10 days storage period, the best response of the variables observed was obtained by tomatoes treated with edible coating 10% glycerol concentration that can maintain the quality of tomato and economically feasible than glycerol concentration of 30% and 50%.

Abstract This research aims to determine the chemical composition (proximate) of chitosan and chitin, The best deacetylation temperature for obtaining chitosan, and the yield of chitosan and chitin from mud crab. This research was conducted in two stages, that is: 1) Preparation of mud crab flour and 2) Extraction and analysis of chitin and chitosan. The experimental design used for chitosan isolation was Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The process of deacetylation chitin becomes chitosan by using 50% NaOH with varying heating temperatures (120, 130, and 140°C). Parameters observed were yield, moisture content, ash content, and degrees of deacetylation. The result showed that the best chitosan was obtained by chitin deacetylation process into chitosan using a temperature of 130°C (KO2). Characteristics quality of the chitosan mud crab shell produced are KO1: yield 61.00%, moisture content 6.47%, ash content 17.18% (db), and degree of deacetylation 49.63%. KO2: yield 59.94%, moisture content 6.48%, ash content 14.85% (db) with degree of deacetylation 51.13%. KO3: yield 53,97, moisture content 6.54%, ash content 14.66% (db) and degree of deacetylation 52.63%. Characteristic quality of chitin included yield was 27.81%, moisture content 7.29%, ash 44.05%, and degree of deacetylation 33.09%.

Durian rind waste is a source of organic material that is easily found during the durian fruit season in South Kalimantan, where the potential abundance can reach 100 tons / day. If left unchecked, it will involve environmental problems such as garbage build-up, strong odors, and aesthetically disturbing views, so special care needs to be taken on the organic waste. Therefore, a solution is needed to overcome this problem by using durian rind waste as raw material for composting. The purpose of this study was to study how to apply the EM4 dose to the quality of durian skin waste compost. This study used a single complete randomized design (CRD) consisting of 6 preparations: s0 (0 mL EM4 / kg material), s1 (1 mL EM4 / kg material), s2 (1.5 mL EM4 / kg material), s3 (2 mL EM4 / kg material), s4 (2.5 mL EM4 / kg material), s5 (3 mL EM4 / kg material). The results showed that what was needed in the study with the help of 1 mL EM4 / kg material (S1), where the durian skin compost was in accordance with SNI on the pH parameters namely 7.48, C-organic 16.59%, total N 1.34%, moisture content 42.54%, temperature 30oC, and compost odor test with criteria not approved rotten.

Maize is known to be an important crop for food security in developing countries; and farmers have continued to experience post-harvest losses which lead to reduction in the quality or quantity of maize grains. The main causes of post-harvest losses are the storage insect, pests, improper drying and poor storage systems. Poor storage accounts for 5-10% loss and 5% loss is attributed to insect attacks. This research modified a one tonne metallic silo with the aim of studying the effects on moisture content and hectolitre weight of the maize grains. The moisture content was determined using moisture meter while the hectolitre weight was determined using extruded brass material. The study lasted for six months and analyses were carried out on the data collected using Duncan multiple range tests at 95% level of confidence. The moisture content was observed to reduce from 13.5% to 11.4% w.b while hectoliter weight which is the main determinant of the market value of the grain was observed to increase from 276 kg/ml to 288 kg/ml, this implies that there was increase in the cost value of the grain after six month of storage. The results showed that variations in moisture content along storage period were significant at (p ≤ 0.05).

The effect of storage materials on the quality of tomato powder was studied. Fresh, firm and matured red tomatoes were washed, sorted and sliced to a uniform thickness of 5mm. The sliced tomatoes were pre-treated by dipping in 1% calcium chloride (CaCl2) and 0.2% potassium metabislphite (KMS) solution for 10 minutes at room temperature. 200g each of the sample was dried at temperatures of 600C until equilibrium moisture content was attained. The dried tomatoes were ground into powder and stored in Black polyethylene [BPE], White polyethylene [WPE], and Laminated Aluminium Foil [LAF] pouches for 6 weeks. The moisture content, crude protein, crude fibre, fat, total ash, and vitamin C of the tomato powder were determined using the method prescribed by AOAC. The carotene contents were determined by HPLC. The proximate analysis was repeated after 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 6weeks of storage.  There was an increase in moisture content and ash content after 6 weeks of storage while a decrease in value of protein, fat and vitamin C content occurred after the storage period. All the parameters measured were best retained by the laminated aluminium foil (LAF) compared to black polyethylene (BPE) and white polyethylene (WPE) packaging material for the entire period of the study.
