Abstract Malang City is one of the cities in East Java with the status of a second-level city, with Surabaya City as the first-level city. Malang City also has various advantages that can attract many people outside the city to live in Malang City. As time goes by, Malang City experiences an increase in built-up land area, which is considered to be the cause of increased flooding in Malang City. This study attempted to identify the areas vulnerable to potential inundation (flooding) using several influencing variables, consisting of data on land cover, slope, land altitude, intensity of rainfall, and NDWI. This study employed the SMCE (Spatial Multi-Criteria Evaluation) method to obtain data on the distribution of potential areas for rainwater puddles (floods) in Malang City. Based on the analysis results, most of Malang City in 2019 is dominated by areas categorized as vulnerable with a percentage of 71% or an area of 7,827.21 hectares. At the same time, the remaining 29%, or an area of 3,130.10 hectares, is an area included in the safe category from potential puddles. The percentage of this vulnerable area, when compared to 2014, increased by 6%.

The article presents a comparative analysis of fortification art monuments in such East countries from Ancient Egypt to medieval China. An attempt is made to identify the main stages of the fortification development from a stand-alone fortress (citadel, fort) to the most complex systems of urban and border fortifications, including moats, walls and gates, battle towers. It is shown that the nature of these architectural structures is determined by the status of the city or settlement, its natural landscape, building structures and materials, the development of military and engineering art. The materials from poliorceticon (Greek: poliorketikon, poliorketika), illustrate the main types of siege machines and mechanisms. The advantages and disadvantages of boundary shafts and long walls (limes). The most striking examples are the defensive systems of Assyria, New Babylon, Judea and Ancient China.

The article concentrates on the colonial and postcolonial history, architecture and topography of the southeastern areas of London, where on both banks of the River Thames in the 18th–20th centuries there were located the docks, which became an architectural and engineering response to the rapidly developing trade of England with territories in the Western and Eastern hemispheres of the world. Constructions for various purposes — pools for loading, unloading and repairing ships, piers, shipyards, office and warehouse premises, sites equipped with forges, carpenter’s workshops, shops, canteens, hotels — have radically changed the bank line of the Thames and appearance of the British capital, which has acquired the status of the center of a huge empire. Docks, which by the beginning of the 20th century, occupied an area of 21 hectares, were the seamy side of an imperial-colonial enterprise, a space of hard and routine work that had a specific architectural representation. It was a necessary part of the city intended for the exchange of goods, where the usual ideas about the beauty gave way to considerations of safety, functionality and economy. Not distinguished by architectural grace, chaotically built up, dirty, smoky and fetid, the area was one of the most significant symbols of England during the industrial revolution and colonial rule. The visual image of this greatness was strikingly different from the architectural samples of previous eras, forcing contemporaries to get used to the new industrial aesthetics. Having disappeared in the second half of the 20th century from the city map, they continue to retain a special place in the mental landscape of the city and the historical memory of the townspeople, which is reflected in the chain of museums located in this area that tell the history of English navigation, England’s participation in geographical discoveries, the stages of conquering the world, creating an empire and ways to acquire the wealth of the nation.

I.Since the end of World War 11, approximately eighty new states havebeen established. Only two, Pakistan and Cyprus, have undergone theagony of dismemberment when Bangladesh broke off in 1973 and theTurkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was declared in 1983. The worldmay now be witnessing the possible breakup of yet a third state:Lebanon, whose disintegration has been accelerated since the June 1982Israeli invasion.Shortly after the invasion began, Henry Kissinger assessed itsconsequence for Lebanon’s future, concluding, “It is neither desirablenor possible to return to the status quo ante in Lebanon.” One possibleoutcome was that some Syrian and Israeli forces would remain in thenorthern and southern ends, respectively, and the central government’sauthority would ostensibly cover the rest of the country. Implicit in theKissinger diagnosis is the possibility of eventual partition.Though the gloomy assessment by the “wizard” of US. foreign policyshould by no means be construed as a portent of an official shift awayfrom the publicly stated US. support of “Lebanon’s sovereignty andterritorial integrity,” a shadow was cast on the country’s prospects.Subsequent developments have seemed to indicate that Lebanon’sdemise looms larger than at any time since the beginning of the civil warin 1975-76.For over a year and a half national fragmentation has proceededinexorably. What many people once could imagine only with difficulty,they now acknowledge: in reality, Lebanon is facing possible death. TheSouth (35 percent of the land area) is occupied by Israel; the North andthe Biqa’ (45 percent) are controlled by Syria; Kasrawan (15 percent) iscontrolled by the Christian Maronite forces (the Lebanese Front forces),which are not subject to the government’s authority. The rest of thecountry-beleaguered Beirut and environs-was until the February1984 breakdown under the government’s shaky control supported bysymbolic US., French, Italian, and British units. The Multi-NationalForce (MNF) was subject to increasing attacks by Muslim leftist factions,as witnessed in the October 23 bombing of the quarters of U.S.Marines and French troops. Thus, instead of keeping peace, the MNFbecame ,a partisan force trying to protect itself. The US. and Frenchforces in particular seemed to have outlived their usefulness as“peacekeepers.” Recurrent fighting in southern Beirut and in theadjacent Chouf mountains, that pitted Christian Maronites and armyunits against Shi‘ite and Druse Muslims constantly threatened theexistence of President Amin Gemayel’s government and consequently arenewal of the civil war. This situation culminated in February 1984 inthe resignation of the Shafiq al-Wazzan’s cabinet, the loss ofgovernment’s control of West Beirut to Muslim-leftist militias, and theimminent collapse of Amin Gemayel’s presidency ...

By 10 January 2017, activists in the predominately Latina/o working class city of La Puente, California had lobbied the council to declare the city a sanctuary supporting immigrants, people of color, Muslims, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities. The same community members urged the school district to declare itself a sanctuary. While community members rejoiced in pushing elected officials to pass these inclusive resolutions, there were multiple roadblocks reducing the potential for more substantive change. Drawing on city council and school board meetings, resolutions and my own involvement in this sanctuary struggle, I focus on a continuum of three overlapping and interlocking manifestations of white supremacist heteronormative patriarchy: neoliberal diversity discourses, institutionalized policies, and a re-emergence of high-profiled white supremacist activities. Together, these dynamics minimized, contained and absorbed community activism and possibilities of change. They reinforced the status quo by maintaining limits on who belongs and sustaining intersecting hierarchies of race, immigration status, gender, and sexuality. This extended case adds to the scant scholarship on the current sanctuary struggles, including among immigration scholars. It also illustrates how the state co-opts and marginalizes movement language, ideas, and people, providing a cautionary tale about the forces that restrict more transformative change.

In this article, the author turns to an examination of the status of the Jewish community in Thessalonica in the late Byzantine period. The author concludes that both in the Byzantine era and during the Venetian rule in Thessalonica, the Jewish community of the city was subjected to numerous restrictions and prohibitions on the part of the official authorities. The reason for this was the initial isolation of the community, as well as the fact that the Jews, in contrast to the rest of the townspeople, owned vast financial resources and rented trading floors, ousting local entrepreneurs from there. The Jewish community in Thessalonica, quite numerous by the standards of contemporaries, in the XIV and XV centuries was in a state of permanent conflict with the church authorities of the city and, probably, had some influence on the communities of Judaizing Christians.

Este artigo propõe-se a ser uma colaboração com os estudos dedicados às irmandades religiosas brasileiras, na sua face regional. A linha de pensamento adotada toma a cidade, a experiência urbana e as ditas associações religiosas como instâncias sociais intimamente relacionadas e interdependentes. Durante o século XIX, a irmandade gestora da Santa Casa de Misericórdia em Porto Alegre cumpria um papel fundamental não apenas para a composição material de seu espaço, mas igualmente para conferir-lhe o status de importante cidade dentro do mosaico urbano que compunha o Império brasileiro. Tomando por base o histórico de ações concretas da irmandade, como a construção do Hospital, as iniciativas para a caridade e filantropia e a promoção das festas litúrgicas, este artigo analisa o vínculo indissociável entre o associativismo católico e o estilo de vida urbano dos setecentos e oitocentos. Cultura Urbana.AbstractThis paper intends to collaborate with other works dedicated to the study of brazilian religious brotherhoods, in their regional aspect. The line of thought  adopted takes the city, the urban experience and the religious associations above mentioned as closely related and interdependent social instances. During the XIX century, the brotherhood in charge of the Holy House of Mercy in the city of Porto Alegre played a fundamental role, not just in the material composition of the urban space, but also in giving it the status of an important city within the urban mosaic comprised by the Brazilian Empire. Based on the (historic of) concrete actions of this brotherhood, as were the construction of the Hospital, the creation of a social representation for the notion of charity, and the promotion of liturgic feasts, this article analyses the unbreakable bond between catholic associativism and the urban lifestyle of the XVIII and XIX centuries.Keywords: Religious Brotherhoods. Abstract Depositional mechanisms of sediments and post-depositional process often cause spatial variation and heterogeneity in rock fabric, which can impact the directional dependency of petrophysical, electrical, and mechanical properties. Quantification of the directional dependency of the aforementioned properties is fundamental for the appropriate characterization of hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs. Anisotropy quantification can be accomplished through numerical simulations of physical phenomena such as fluid flow, gas diffusion, and electric current conduction in porous media using multi-scale image data. Typically, the outcome of these simulations is a transport property (e.g., permeability). However, it is also possible to quantify the tortuosity of the media used as simulation domain, which is a fundamental descriptor of the microstructure of the rock. The objectives of this paper are (a) to quantify tortuosity anisotropy of porous media using multi-scale image data (i.e., whole-core CT-scan and micro-CT-scan image stacks) through simulation of electrical potential distribution, diffusion, and fluid flow, and (b) to compare electrical, diffusional, and hydraulic tortuosity. First, we pre-process the images (i.e., CT-scan images) to remove non-rock material visual elements (e.g., core barrel). Then, we perform image analysis to identify different phases in the raw images. Then, we proceed with the numerical simulations of electric potential distribution. The simulation results are utilized as inputs for a streamline algorithm and subsequent direction-dependent electrical tortuosity estimation. Next, we conduct numerical simulation of diffusion using a random walk algorithm. The distance covered by each walker in each cartesian direction is used to compute the direction-dependent diffusional tortuosity. Finally, we conduct fluid-flow simulations to obtain the velocity distribution and compute the direction-dependent hydraulic tortuosity. The simulations are conducted in the most continuous phase of the segmented whole-core CT-scan image stacks and in the segmented pore-space of the micro-CT-scan image stacks. Finally, the direction-dependent tortuosity values obtained with each technique are employed to assess the anisotropy of the evaluated samples. We tested the introduced workflow on dual energy whole-core CT-scan images and on smaller scale micro-CT-scan images. The whole-core CT-scan images were obtained from a siliciclastic depth interval, composed mainly by spiculites. Micro-CT-scan images we obtained from Berea Sandstone and Austin Chalk formations. We observed numerical differences in the estimates of direction-dependent electrical, diffusional, and hydraulic tortuosity for both types of image data employed. The highest numerical differences were observed when comparing electrical and hydraulic tortuosity with diffusional tortuosity. The observed differences were significant specially in anisotropic samples. The documented comparison provides useful insight in the selection process of techniques for estimation of tortuosity. The use of core-scale image data in the proposed workflow provides semi-continuous estimates of tortuosity and tortuosity anisotropy which is typically not attainable when using pore-scale images. Additionally, the semi-continuous nature of the tortuosity and tortuosity anisotropy estimates in whole-core CT-scan image data provides an excellent tool for the selection of core plugs coring locations.
