The necessity of adapting diesel engines to work on vegetable oils is justified. The possibility of using rapeseed oil and its mixtures with petroleum diesel fuel as motor fuels is considered. Experimental studies of fuel injection of small high-speed diesel engine type MD-6 (1 Ch 8,0/7,5)when using diesel oil and rapeseed oil and computational studies of auto-tractor diesel engine type D-245.12 (1 ChN 11/12,5), working on blends of petroleum diesel fuel and rapeseed oil. When switching autotractor diesel engine from diesel fuel to rapeseed oil in the full-fuel mode, the mass cycle fuel supply increased by 12 %, and in the small-size high-speed diesel engine – by about 27 %. From the point of view of the flow of the working process of these diesel engines, changes in other parameters of the fuel injection process are less significant. Biofuels derived from vegetable oils are known to be promising alternative fuels for diesel engines. The possibility of using mixtures of petroleum diesel fuel with rapeseed oil and rapeseed oil methyl ester as environmentally friendly motor fuels is considered. The practicability of changing the composition of these mixtures in accordance with the engine operating mode is shown. A technique for multicriteria optimization of the composition of such mixed biofuels is suggested. The basic characteristics of the optimal composition of these mixed biofuels are calculated. A device for regulating fuel’s composition is proposed. The basic characteristic of regulation of the blended biofuel composition realized by the device is presented. The purpose of this research was to examine penetration peculiarities of rapeseed oil injected into the combustion chamber of a diesel engine. For conducting tests, a stand imitating conditions (air density) for the engine combustion chamber was designed. The analysis of pictures obtained using a fast recording camera determined fuel injection into the chamber volume and calculated the velocity of spray head. It was established that fuel spray of injected rapeseed oil proceeds deeper into the combustion chamber than that of mineral diesel fuel. The parameters of fuel spray are mainly influenced by injection pressure rather than by the density of compressed gases. Santrauka Šio darbo tikslas buvo ištirti į dyzelinio variklio degimo kamerą įpurškiamos rapsų aliejaus čiurkšlės kitimo ypatumus, lyginant su mineraliniu dyzelinu. Tyrimams sukonstruotas stendas, kuriame buvo imituojamos sąlygos (oro tankis), esančios variklio degimo kameroje. Analizuojant spartaus filmavimo vaizdo kamera gautus vaizdus, buvo išmatuotas degalų čiurkšlės įsiskverbimo į degimo kamerą dydis, apskaičiuotas čiurkšlės fronto judėjimo greitis. Nustatyta, kad įpurškiamo rapsų aliejaus čiurkšlė į degimo kamerą įsiskverbia giliau, negu mineralinio dyzelino čiurkšlė. Įpurškiamų degalų čiurkšlės parametrams didesnės įtakos turi įpurškimo slėgis nei aplinkos dujų tankis.

Chemical and physical properties (density, kinematic viscosity, flash point, copper strip corrosion, calorific value) of multicomponent biofuel blends, containing rapeseed oil butyl or methyl esters, biobutanol and fossil diesel fuel are discussed in this paper. Ester, water and partial glycerides contents were determinated in multicomponent biofuel blends. These properties were compared with the same properties of pure biodiesel (rapeseed oil butyl and methyl esters) and pure diesel fuel. As there are no standards for blends fuel, containing more than 7  of biocomponents, that is why, density and viscosity were evaluated according standards EN 14214 and EN 590.It is determined that the addition of butanol and rapeseed oil butyl esters should improve the cold flow properties, such as cloud point and cold filter plugging point.As rapeseed oil butyl esters were produced from high acidity rapeseed oil (4%), much attention was deviated for oxidation stability and acidity of pure rapeseed oil butylesters and it blends with butanol and diesel fuel.

Liquid biofuels for compression ignition engines are often based on vegetable oils. In order to be used in compression ignition engine the vegetable oils have to be processed because of their high viscosity or it is also possible to use vegetable oils in fuel blends. In order to decrease the viscosity of the fuel blends containing crude vegetable oil the alcohol-based fuel admixtures can be used. The paper describes the effect of rapeseed oil–diesel fuel–n-butanol blends on combustion characteristics and solid particles production of turbocharged compression ignition engine. The 10% and 20% concentrations of n-butanol in the fuel blend were measured and analysed. The engine Zetor 1204, located in tractor Zetor Forterra 8641 with the power of 60kW and direct injection was used for the measurement. The engine was loaded through power take off shaft of the tractor using mobile dynamometer MAHA ZW500. The measurement was carried out in stabilized conditions at 20%, 60% and 100% engine load. The engine speed was kept at 1950 rpm. Tested fuel blends showed lower production of solid particles than diesel fuel and lower peak cylinder pressure and with increasing concentration of n-butanol in the fuel blend the ignition delay was prolonged and premixed phase of combustion was increased.

The viscosity of a fuel depends on its hydrocarbon composition. Vegetable oil is considered an alternative to diesel fuel. Its high viscosity makes it difficult to consider as a commercial diesel fuel. Vegetable oil is lipids, fatty acid esters. They have a high calorific value and contain straight hydrocarbon chains, resulting in their relatively high cetane number. Viscosity and density determine the evaporation and mixing process in an engine, as they affect the shape and type of the fuel flame, the size of the droplets formed, and how they enter the combustion chamber. Low density and viscosity provide better fuel injection; with an increase in the diameter of the droplet, its complete combustion decreases, therefore, the specific fuel consumption increases and the smoke of the exhaust gases increases. The viscosity of the fuel affects the pump flow and fuel leakage through the piston pair clearance. As the viscosity decreases, the amount of diesel fuel leaks between the plunger and bushing increases, resulting in a decrease in pump flow. Converting the engine to a fuel with a lower density and viscosity will result in burnout of the piston head, so the fuel equipment needs to be adjusted. Plunger wear is viscosity dependent. It fuel is in the range of 1.8-7.0 mm2/s, which practically does not affect the durability of modern high-speed diesel equipment. Consider using vegetable rapeseed oil as an alternative to diesel fuel. Its viscosity can be reduced by chemically converting esterification to ethyl esters. When the cheese rapeseed oil is heated to 80 °C, it will give a viscosity value similar to that of commercial diesel. The mixing system will have an operating power equivalent to that of a diesel engine when heated to 40-50 °C.
