AbstractZnO nano-tubes (ZNTs) have been successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal-etching method, and characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy and room temperature photoluminescence measurement. The as-synthesized ZNTs have a diameter of 500 nm, wall thickness of 20–30 nm, and length of 5 µm. Intensity of the plane (0002) diffraction peak, compared with that of plane (10$$ \bar 1 $$0) of ZNTs, is obviously lower than that of ZnO nano-rods. This phenomenon can be caused by the smaller cross section of plane (0002) of the nano-tubes compared with that of other morphologies. On basis of the morphological analysis, the formation process of nano-tubes can be proposed in two stages: hydrothermal growth and reaction etching process.

Abstract. Recently, there has been increasting interest in the doping of nano-/microcrystal hosts with Sm3+. However, very few examples of Sm3+doped YF3-based nanophosphors have been reported. In this paper, a variety of uniform YF3:Sm nano-/microcrystals have been successfully prepared by a facile, effective, and environmentally friendly hydrothermal method. The morphology evolution process has been investigated by quenching the reaction at different time. Based on the results, a possible growth mechanism is presented in detail. The as-obtained YF3:Sm nano-/microcrystals show strong yellow and red light emissions under room temperature, which is quite different from those reported previously and might find potential applications in fields such as light phosphor powers and advanced flat panel display devices.

Abstract Given widespread fluoride in the ground water, there is a need for effective defluoridation in several geographical areas. In this regard, we explored heavily doped cationic nano-composites of hydroxyapatite (HA) given its surface chemistry for adsorption of the specific anion. We synthesized and extensively characterized HA nano-rods (HA-NR), Al/Mg-HA nanocomposites and amorphous aluminum hydroxide, and optimized their efficient defluoridation. The kinetics and thermodynamics of adsorption were further evaluated to establish the mechanistic rationale and its spontaneity. We report the optimized ideal adsorbents for the near-total removal of fluoride that demonstrated 99.99% and 99.98% efficiency with adsorption capacities of 83.3 and 81.3mg/g respectively. The adsorbent composites were (Mg-HA)-Al(OH)3 and (HA-NR)-Al(OH)3 in 1:1 ratio. The optimal conditions for defluoridation were 25mg of adsorbent in 25ml (10mg/L) fluoride solution at room temperature agitated for 10h in the pH range of 4.88–7.20.

In this paper, orthoferrite YFeO3 was synthesized by hydrothermal method. The space group of YFeO3 is Pnma and the spin state of [Formula: see text] ion is low spin (LS). The YFeO3 crystal exhibits a weak antiferromagnetic behavior by magnetic measurement. For the electrical polarization measurement, micron-scale Pt electrodes were deposited on the both sides of the YFeO3 crystal by FIB-induced deposition. The saturation polarization value is 0.1994[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]C/cm2 at room temperature. The crystal exhibits ferroelectric behavior through the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction induced by additional spin canting of the antiferromagnetic ordering. This work may be applied to further study of the multiferroicity in rare-earth orthoferrites RFeO3.

YPO4 nanowires (NWs) and nanoparticles (NPs) have been synthesized by hydrothermal methods respectively in the absence and presence of EDTA. The Eu3+ and Yb3+ codoped YPO4 NWs and NPs prepared directly from hydrothermal systems show efficient red down-conversion luminescence (DL) and upconversion luminescence (UL) at room temperature without further annealing process. EDTA plays a critical role in controlling the morphologies of YPO4 nanocrystals in hydrothermal systems and enhances both the DL and UL intensities of Eu3+ by the factor of 100%. Monodispersed Eu3+ and Yb3+ codoped YPO4 NPs will be a new candidate for application in infrared displays and biological labels.
