Abstract Accurate prediction of the cure level of thermoset polymers is essential to simulate the thermomechanical behavior of polymeric thermoset sealants, which is strongly dependent on cure level. Conventional cure kinetics models, however, fail to accurately predict the cure levels of thermoset sealants subjected to a complex temperature program. Herein, we propose a new cure kinetics model that greatly enhances cure level predictability by considering temperature derivatives. The validity of our model was verified by simulating the thermomechanical behavior of a polymeric sealant using a user material subroutine (UMAT) of ABAQUS software. Experimental results from an appropriately designed thermomechanical test were compared with simulation results obtained from the UMAT.

A simulation describing the fiber movement during the condensation was conducted, and the effect of the condensation in the carding machine was studied. The simulation results showed that the condensation has the blending and the evening effect on the condensed sliver, which can be explained by the fiber rearrangement. Moreover, the increasing web width and the decreasing condensing length can result in a more uniform sliver. Further, the evening effect of the web width on the web was verified by experiments. The simulation results were in general agreement with the experimental results.

Four types of Super Typhoon drip emitter with trapezoidal channel were selected out for the investigation of the flow field of the channel, and the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) method was applied to simulate the micro-field inside the channel. The simulation results showed that the emitter discharge of different turbulent model is 4%-14% bigger than that of the experimental results, the average discharge deviation of κ-ω and RSM model is 5, 4.5 respectively, but the solving efficiency of the κ-ω model is obviously higher than that of the RSM model.

In this paper, the overall design of magnetic levitated thrust bearing experiment table was completed, of which the main experimental parameters those are electromagnetic parameters and structural dimensions were determined, in addition, the joint debugging and deformation measurement are performed. Analysis results showed that theoretical value, ANSYS simulation results and experimental results were similar, which said that it is feasible to perform stiffness check of the thrust collar on the experiment table.

A series of numerical simulations utilizing LS-DYNA was performed to determine the mid-point deformations of V-shaped plates due to blast loading. The numerical simulation results were then compared with experimental results from published literature. The V-shaped plate is made of DOMEX 700 and is used underneath an armour personal carrier vehicle as an anti-tank mine to mitigate the effects of explosion from landmines in a battlefield. The performed numerical simulations of blast loading of V-shaped plates consisted of various angles i.e. 60°, 90°, 120°, 150° and 180°; variable mass of explosives located at the central mid-point of the V-shaped vertex with various stand-off distances. It could be seen that the numerical simulations produced good agreement with the experimental results where the average difference was about 26.6%.

We have investigated random-access multilevel storage in phase change memory by staircase-like pulse programming. Staircase-like pulse consists of first sub-pulse and second sub-pulse. Our simulation exhibited that any resistance levels are expected to be randomly accessed by controlling the crystallization with different widths of second sub-pulset2. Based on the simulation results, we did experiment on staircase-like pulse programming. Experimental results showed that the device resistance gradually increased with reducing second sub-pulset2to 0 ns. In other words, random access to any resistance levels was demonstrated to be possible simply by changingt2.

In nowadays the pneumatic controlled systems are widely used in industrial applications where valves must be operated, where there is a fire ignition risk, or in different automation systems where a positioning action is desired. The paper presents the experimental results of a pneumatic actuator controlled by a proportional control valve. The goal of the paper is to compare the experimental results with the numerical simulation results and to improve the mathematical model associated with the experiment.

This paper presents a micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS)-based integrated triaxial electrochemical seismometer, which can detect three-dimensional vibration. By integrating three axes, the integrated triaxial electrochemical seismometer is characterized by small volume and high symmetry. The numerical simulation results inferred that the integrated triaxial electrochemical seismometer had excellent independence among three axes. Based on the experimental results, the integrated triaxial electrochemical seismometer had the advantage of small axial crosstalk and could detect vibration in arbitrary directions. Furthermore, compared with the uniaxial electrochemical seismometer, the integrated triaxial electrochemical seismometer had similar sensitivity curves ranging from 0.01 to 100 Hz. In terms of random ground motion response, high consistencies between the developed integrated triaxial electrochemical seismometer and the uniaxial electrochemical seismometer could be easily observed, which indicated that the developed integrated triaxial electrochemical seismometer produced comparable noise levels to those of the uniaxial electrochemical seismometer. These results validated the performance of the integrated triaxial electrochemical seismometer, which has a good prospect in the field of deep geophysical exploration and submarine seismic monitoring.

Mixing of fluid can happen in existence or absence of impeller which will affect the mixing performance. The hydrodynamics behavior of fluid has a strong effect on the mixing. The design of mixing systems and operation using the agitated tanks is complicated because it is difficult to obtain accurate information for turbulence’s impeller induced. Computational Fluid Dynamics can be used to provide a detailed comprehension of those systems. This paper describes the effect of various designs of impeller in miniature stirred tank reactor towards the mixing of the calcium alginate beads with the milk using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, ANSYS Fluent 19.2. The four different type of impellers are edge beater, 5-turbine blade, t-shape, and paddle. The impeller was simulated at different speeds of 150 rpm, 250 rpm, and 300 rpm. K-epsilon turbulence model was employed to simulate the flow distribution pattern of calcium alginate beads and the Multiple Reference Frame approach was used for the impeller rotation’s simulation. The simulation results obtained have a good agreement with the experimental results in term of vortex formation. The simulation results obtained for contour plots were fitted well with the experimental results as well as with pattern of impeller flow which was also studied. As a result, an optimal design of the impeller that is able to produce good mixing can be achieved using CFD analysis. The results obtained after performing the simulation proved that edge beater blade outperformed the other impellers and took the least time to fully distribute the calcium alginate beads in the tank at 250 rpm compared to 150 and 300 rpm. It can also be concluded that the edge beater blade is the best for the mixing of two-phase fluid and also produces mixed pattern flow. The obtained results from CFD can also be used to scale up the mixing process in larger systems.

Under launch impact load, LIGA nickel that manufacturing MEMS fuze safety and arming (S&A) device will have obvious strain rate effect. By using finite element analysis software ANSYS/LS-DYNA, simulation models of a small-caliber ammunition MEMS fuze setback S&A device with strain rate effect and without strain rate effect were respectively established. The results of the two simulation modules were quite different. Comparisons between experimental results and simulation results show that simulation results considering strain rate effect agree well with experimental results, which proves strain rate effect should not be ignored in the simulation of MEMS S&A device.

This article presents results of experimental evaluation of glob-top materials for multi-chip-modules (MCM) in harsh environments. Material and process tests have been performed with the purpose to find a material which would fulfill the reliability requirements for use e.g. in military or automotive applications. Seven polymer materials, i.e. four epoxies, two silicones and one polyurethane material have been selected and evaluated in the experiments. The most critical material and process parameters for glob-top have been identified and measured. Based on the experimental results, application-based scoring of studied epoxy materials has been performed. Material evaluation results have been summarized in conclusions about the most suitable glob-top material for use in harsh environments.
