Abstract Introduction During the COVID pandemic, the 2019-2020 cohort of final year students were invited to participate in Foundation interim Year 1 placements (FiY1). FiY1 aimed to ease transition to Foundation Year 1 doctor (FY1). We assessed the psychological impact of FiY1 on final year medical students. Method A cross-sectional survey was distributed to final year medical students in the UK between June 4th and July 4th, 2020. The survey contained the following domains: participant demographics, rationale for FiY1 participation, a checklist of the key safety principles for FiY1s, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Perceived Stress scale-4. Results 107 final years responded to the survey. 72.0% (n = 77) of final year students surveyed were working as FiY1s. Final year students participating in FiY1 postings had reduced rates of anxiety (29.9% vs 43.4%, P = 0.186), depression (5.2% vs 20.0%, P = 0.018) and lower perceived stress levels (5.0 vs 7.2, P < 0.001). 19.5% (15/77) FiY1s reported working beyond their competency, 27.3% (22/77) felt unsupervised, but 94.8% (73/77) of FiY1s felt the post prepared them for FY1. Conclusions Students participating in FiY1 postings felt less stressed and depressed than those not participating in the scheme and the majority felt it was preparing them for FY1.

Abstract Background: Medical students experience significant stress and anxiety during undergraduate education. Coaching is a possible way of supporting these students throughout this challenging time. To assess the benefits of coaching for medical students, a pilot study providing coaching was performed. This pilot assessed how coaching affected the mental health of medical students and how coaching was received by them. Methods: Twelve third-year medical students were each given eight 30-60 minute coaching sessions. Each participant took the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) pre-, mid-and post-coaching. After coaching, there were three open-ended questions to measure the reactions to coaching and a scale to determine the likelihood of accessing coaching in the future. Results: There was a significant effect of coaching on perceived stress(p=.023); a trend toward significant effect of coaching on anxiety(p=.057); and no effect of coaching on depression. Qualitative analysis indicated Affective responses (gaining perspective and self-awareness); Cognitive responses (goal setting and working through solving problems); and Skills responses (developing reflection abilities and critical thinking). Attributes of coaching included perceiving coaching as a positive, individualized and supportive experience that students were highly likely to access again. Conclusions: Coaching holds promise as an intervention offered to medical students to reduce stress and anxiety, and provide positive support for students, preparing them for their professional futures.

Aim This study was conducted to examine spiritual wellbeing and its relationship with perceived stress, anxiety and depression among cardiac patients. Methods The present descriptive study was conducted on 120 patients with cardiac diseases. The Perceived Stress Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and Paloutzian and Ellison Spiritual Wellbeing Questionnaire were used for data collection. Results Of 120 patients, 79 were diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome, 30 were diagnosed with heart failure, and the rest were diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia (mostly atrial fibrillation). The mean scores for depression, anxiety and stress in the studied patients were 10.1, 9.9, and 19.5, respectively. The mean score of the total spiritual wellbeing was 86.2. Results showed an inverse and significant relationship between spiritual wellbeing with perceived stress (R2=−0.535, P=0.001), anxiety (R2=−0.389, P<0.001), and depression (R2=−0.388, P<0.001). Conclusions Improving cardiac patients’ spiritual wellbeing should be recognised as an essential part of holistic care and an effective strategy in reducing depression, anxiety and stress among cardiac patients.

Abstract Objectives: This study was aimed to determine and compare the frequency of the emotional disturbances, anxiety and depression among the medical students on Hospital Anxiety Depression scale (HAD) score among the hostelites and day scholars. Methodology: This cross sectional study was conducted at private medical college in Faisalabad, Pakistan, from March 2019 to April 2019, comprising of 105 male and female students. Validated Hospital Anxiety depression scale (HAD-A and HAD-D) was used to collect data from 1st year and 2nd year MBBS students in order to evaluate anxiety and depression among them.  Data was analyzed on SPSS 21. Pearson’s Chi-square was applied to compare the percentages of anxious and depressed subjects among the studied group. Independent sample t-test was applied for comparison of mean HAD scores between hostelites and day scholars. P value ? 0.05 was taken as significant. Results: There were 105 students in the study with a mean age of 19.4± 0.68 years. Overall, 82.7% students had anxiety, and 52.1% suffered from depression. Average HAD –A and HAD- D scores were 11.2 ± 3.41 and 7.2 ± 3.37 respectively. Greater number of hostelites was suffering from emotional disturbances as compared to day scholars.  HAD –A scores was significantly higher in hostelites than day scholars with P value 0.003*(11.85 ± 3.42 Vs 10.92 ±2.56).  HAD- D scores were also higher in hostilities but difference was insignificant. Aims and methodTo examine gender differences in self-reported depression and prescribed antidepressants (ADs). The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was used to assess depression, and information on prescribed ADs was obtained from the Swedish Prescribed Drug Register.ResultsDepression was reported by 11.7% of the participants (12.3% men and 11.2% women). ADs were prescribed for 7.6% of the participants (5.3% men, 9.8% women). Among men, 1.8% reported depression and used ADs, 10.5% reported depression but did not use ADs, and 3.6% used ADs but did not report depression. The corresponding figures for women were 2.6%, 8.6% and 7.2%.Clinical implicationsMen report depression to a greater extent than women but are prescribed ADs to a lesser extent, possibly a sign of under-treatment. Women are prescribed ADs without reporting depression more often than men, possibly a sign of over-treatment. Although the causes remain unclear, diagnostic and treatment guidelines should benefit from considering gender differences in these respects.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychological distress of urological and uro-oncological patients undergoing surgery. Methods: Patients who presented to Mercy University Hospital from October 2019–May 2020 were consecutively recruited. Demographic and clinical characteristics including age, gender, marital status, type of surgery (uro-oncology or general urology), endoscopy or open surgery were gathered. Mood was evaluated using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale prior to admission, prior to discharge and 6 weeks post-surgery. Results: A total of 118 participants (79.7% male) completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale prior to admission, prior to discharge and at 6 weeks post-surgery. Forty patients (33.9%) underwent uro-oncology-related surgery. At pre-admission 39 patients (33%) fell into a possible-probable clinical category for anxiety and 15 (12.7%) for depression. Older patients had significantly lower anxiety levels than younger patients ( p⩽0.01). There were no differences between patients undergoing uro-oncology or more general urology surgery and levels of anxiety or depression. Repeated measures analysis of variance with age as a covariate indicated no significant differences in Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale anxiety scores over time. There was a statistically significant reduction in Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale depression scores over the three assessment time points ( p=0.004). Conclusion: Over one-third of patients were experiencing moderate to severe levels of psychological distress pre-surgery – higher than levels previously reported in uro-oncological patients. Surprisingly, there was no difference in anxiety and depression scores in uro-oncology and urology patients. Psychological distress in both uro-oncology and more general urology patients should be considered in the surgical setting. Level of evidence Moderate

IntroductionCollege students, especially freshmen, are particularly prone to stress due to the transitional nature of college life. However most of studies in this context were conducted in Western Europe and North America with only few recent studies conducted in the Arab world. This study sought to determine whether there was a difference in perceived stress levels of female medical students at Mansoura University, Egypt, and King Faisal University, Saudi Arabia.MethodsThe sample consisted of first year female medical students. The self-reported questionnaire covered four categories, including 13 items, of sources of stress (stressors).Perceived stress scale and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were used to measure stress, anxiety and depression.ResultsThere is no significant difference between the two groups regarding number of stressors. However, Saudi students were more likely to cite emotional problems, excessive workload and fear of future. The most common items in Egyptian students were financial and environmental problems. Prevalence of stress and clinical anxiety was higher in the Saudi sample. Logistic regression analyses of independent predictors of high level of stress among both groups combined were Saudi nationality, larger family size, clinical depression and clinical anxiety.ConclusionsPerceived stress and anxiety are frequent among Saudi students. This information could be useful in designing preventive mental health programs that should be an integral part of the routine clinical facilities caring for medical students to help them to cope with the increasing demands of medical education.

Pain, anxiety, and depression are symptoms that need attention in physiotherapeutic practice, once they influence the functionality of patients, so understanding them becomes an important tool. The aim of the study was to verify the levels of pain, depression, and anxiety in patients attended at a physiotherapy center. A cross-sectional clinical study in which a sociodemographic questionnaire was applied, the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (MRQ). Seven patients participated and presented a MRI score of 18.57 ± 2.63 points, HADS in the topic anxiety 12.71 ± 5.43 points, HADS depression 9.57 ± 5.22 points and the resting VAS presented an average of 4 , 42 ± 3.9 pain points and in motion showed 8.71 ± 0.95. It is concluded that the population with low back pain has high intensity of pain, probable anxiety and possible level of depression.

Abstract Background Anxiety and depression among physicians and nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic in the USA are not well described and their modifiable causes are poorly understood. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional survey of symptoms of anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) among physicians and nurses in two US healthcare systems in June through September 2020; participation rate was 5–10%. We described features of work as well as their perceptions and associated concerns in relation to the risk of anxiety and depression, while controlling for health history via regression and path analyses. Results About a third of 684 nurses and 185 physicians surveyed showed symptoms of anxiety or depression, and the excess of symptoms of mood disorders was particularly prominent in nurses. The belief that one was infected was a dominant correlate of both anxiety and depression. This belief was more associated with history of symptoms of pneumonia than the contact with COVID-19 diagnosed patients. Factors found to be associated with reduced anxiety and depression in this working environment were having confidence in the competent use of and access to personal protective equipment, maintaining usual working hours, being surrounded by colleagues who were both sufficient in numbers and not stressed, and the support of immediate family and religious communities. Involvement in aerosol-generating procedures with infected patients was linked with lower depression in nurses but higher among physicians. Likewise, the setting of recent patient encounters affected risk of anxiety and depression differently for physicians and nurses. Conclusions Our findings may help develop mitigation measures and underscore the need to help nurses and physicians bear the psychological burden of the COVID-19 pandemic and similar events in the future.
