Abstract Objectives The study was aimed at assessing the effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus yoba on the serum lipid profile and body weight of male Wistar rats fed a high fat diet. Methods 20 seven week old male rats weighing between 120 g and 180 g were used for the study and divided into 4 groups of 5 rats each. The control group was fed normal mice pellets and distilled water, while the other groups were fed mice pellets supplemented with 3% cholesterol and 2% saturated fat in addition to any of distilled water, Lactobacillus rhamnosus yoba or Norvastatin respectively. The body weight was measured at the start of the study and after 2 weeks while serum parameters were measured after 8 weeks. Data was analyzed using SPSS Version 20. ANOVA and Tukey's tests determined significant differences in means at 95% confidence interval. Results Lactobacillus rhamnosus yoba significantly (P < 0.005) modulated weight gain, serum total cholesterol and triglycerides when compared to the control. Similarly, LDL-cholesterol was significantly modulated (P < 0.005) while HDL-cholesterol was significantly enhanced (P < 0.005) when compared to the control. Conclusions The ability of Lactobacillus rhamnosus yoba to elevate HDL cholesterol and modulate LDL-cholesterol without the side effects of statins makes it a potential functional food. In line with the findings, the present study justifies the use of Lactobacillus rhamnosus yoba as a probiotic in fermented foods. Funding Sources NA.

Hyperlipidaemia is a well documented risk factor for cardiovascular disease, a major cause of mortality world-wide. Chrysophyllum albidum (white star apple) has several medicinal properties.  Ingestion of the fruits has been found to lower lipid levels in the body, due to its high fibre content. Research works have shown that several parts of the plant are highly medicinal. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antihyperlipidaemic property of methanol leaf extract of Chrysophyllum albidum in Wistar rats fed with a high fat diet. Thirty male Wistar rats weighing between 130g-150g were distributed into five groups of six animals each. Group 1 received normal fat diet (NFD). Group 2 received high fat diet (HFD; Grower mash supplemented with 20% beef tallow). Group 3 received HFD and a standard lipid lowering drug, orlistat (20mg/kg body weight, p.o).  Animals in group 4 and 5 were fed on HFD and received methanol leaf extract of Chrysophyllum albidum, 250mg/kg and 500mg/kg, p.o respectively. The administration was carried out for 56 days. On the 57th day, animals were sacrificed by cervical dislocation. Organs were harvested and blood samples were collected for biochemical analyses. Results showed that the administration of HFD increased the total cholesterol, LDL-Cholesterol, triglycerides levels and decreased the HDL- cholesterol levels significantly (p <0.05). Simultaneous administration of Chrysophyllum albidum extract significantly (p<0.05) reduced the total cholesterol, LDL-Cholesterol, triglycerides levels and increased HDL- Cholesterol. Final body weights of animals that received Chrysophyllum albidum extract were significantly (p<0.05) lower than final body weights of animals in groups 2 (negative control). Results from Histopathology revealed inflammation of the liver and kidney of rats in group 2 (negative control). On the other hand, rats that received orlistat and Chrysophyllum albidum extract had normal liver and kidney architecture. It was concluded that Chrysophyllum albidum extract showed antihyperlipidemic effect in rats fed with beef tallow supplemented diet.

Background Rasbora agrotynea (local name : Seluang ) is a fish native to Sumatera, Malaya and Borneo. This fish has a potential as a local wisdom for supplementation of omega 3 and omega 6. In Sumatera, Seluang fish was used as traditional food.   Aim of Study Aim of this study to explore the efficacy of seluang fish oil in body weight, lipid profile, adiponectin and leptin level in Wistar Rats-Induced High Fat Diet   Methods This study was an experimental study , pre-post test with control group design. The sample in this study was  30 male rats, 8 weeks old, weight 150-200 gram. Rats were given high fat diet and seluang fish oil  at dose of 0,1 , 0,2  and 0,4 mL/200 gr BW/day for 2 weeks. Seluang fish oil was extracted by distilation methods. The results of this study were assayed by SPSS 18.   Results Seluang fish oil 0,4 mL/200 gr BW  was more potent to reduce body weight gain, triglyseride level,  leptin and increase adiponectin level than seluang fish oil 0,1 mL/200 gr BW, 0,2 mL/200 gr BW, negative control and positive control.   Conclusion Seluang fish oil had a potention to reduce body weight, triglyceride, leptin and increase adiponectin level.   Keywords: Seluang fish Oil – body weight- triglyserida – leptin - adiponectin

The sample in this study was  30 male rats, 8 weeks old, weight 150-200 gram. Rats were given high fat diet and lerek fruits extract  at dose of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kgBW/day for 2 weeks. Lerek fruits was extracted by infusion methods. The results of this study were assayed by SPSS 18.   Results Lerek fruit extract 100 mg/kgBW  was more potent to reduce body weight gain, triglyseride level and leptin level than lerek fruit extract 50 mg/kgBW, 200 mg.kgBW, negative control and positive control.   Conclusion Lerek fruit extracts had a potention to reduce body weight, triglyceride and leptin level.   Keywords: Lerek fruit extract – body weight- triglyserida - leptin

The Saesaengmyung Diet (SD) is a newly developed dietary product to help control weight. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether SD combined with a high-fat (HF) diet could influence body weight, fat accumulation, and glucose levels in blood. C57BL/6J mice were fed for 8 weeks with a standard diet, an HF diet, and an HF + 10% or HF + 20% SD diet. Body weight was recorded weekly, and plasma levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and glucose were analyzed at the end of the study. Weight increases in the 10% or 20% SD group were significantly less than in the HF diet group (p < 0.05). Plasma total cholesterol level significantly decreased by 33.5% in the 10% SD group and 38.8% in the 20% SD group, but the LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and glucose levels in the SD groups were not significantly changed. Our findings indicate that SD may be beneficial to overweight individuals in the reduction of weight gain induced by an HF diet.Key words: Saesaengmyung Diet, high-fat diet, obesity, body weight, cholesterol, glucose.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the cause of 7,3 million death globally in 2008. The main pathophysiology process that leads to CHD is atherosclerosis which is caused by high LDL cholesterol level. The aim of this study was to explore bay leaf and celery leaf infusion effect on reducing LDL cholesterol level in dyslipidemic rat model. The type of this study was true experimental research using wistar rat (Rattus novergicus) as the sample. The rats were induced by high fat diet and PTU for two weeks then each of the group were given either bay leaf infusion, celery leaf infusion, simvastatin (positive control), or aquadest (negative control) for a week. The measurement of LDL level used Friedewald formulation. Data was analyzed using paired sample t test and one way ANOVA. As the result there was a significance reduction on LDL level after treatment with bay leaf (p=0,013) and celery leaf infusion (p=0,035) but there was no significance difference between groups (p=0,293). It was concluded that bay leaf and celery leaf infusion could reduce the LDL level in dyslipidemic wistar rat but there was no difference on the capability of the two different leafs on reducing LDL level. Abstract PyroGlu-Leu is present in certain food protein hydrolysates and traditional Japanese fermented foods. Our previous study demonstrated that the oral administration of pyroGlu-Leu (0.1 mg/kg body weight) attenuates dysbiosis in mice with experimental colitis. The objective of this study was to elucidate why such a low dose of pyroGlu-Leu attenuates dysbiosis in different animal models. High fat diet extensively increased the ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes in feces of rats compared to control diet. Oral administration of pyroGlu-Leu (1 mg/kg body weight) significantly attenuated high fat diet-induced dysbiosis. By focusing on the production of intestinal antimicrobial peptides, we found that pyroGlu-Leu significantly increased the level of 4962 Da peptides, which identified as the propeptide of rattusin or defensin alpha 9, in ileum. We also observed increased tryptic fragment peptides from rattusin in the lumen. Here, we report that orally administered pyroGlu-Leu attenuates dysbiosis by increasing in the host antimicrobial peptide, rattusin.

Background: Obesity is not only affecting the affluent society but also affecting developing countries like India. The incidence of obesity is rapidly increasing throughout the world. However, the current anti-obesity drugs have numerous limitations.Methods: The obesity was induced in male wistar rats by giving high-fat diet over 12 weeks. The variables assessed were body weight, abdominal girth, blood triglyceride level, liver weight and fat mass and histopathology of liver. Aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Lagenaria siceraria (200mg/kg and 400mg/kg Doses) were compared to orlistat (treatment control) and high-fat diet group (disease control) for different variables.Results: Alcoholic and aqueous extracts high dose (400mg/kg) of Lagenaria siceraria significantly reduced total body weight (p<0.05), abdominal girth (p <0.05) at week 10 and 12 compared to high fat diet group. Alcoholic extract (400mg/kg) significantly reduced total blood triglyceride level (p <0.05) and total liver weight (p <0.05) compared to high-fat diet group. None of the study drugs reduced % liver weight. Alcoholic extract high dose (p <0.05) has shown improvement in histopathological score. Both aqueous and alcoholic extracts have shown reduced fat mass compared to high-fat diet group.Conclusions: The alcoholic extract (400mg/kg) of Lagenaria siceraria alleviated high fat diet induced obesity and dyslipidemic changes in rats. The alcoholic extract of Lagenaria siceraria is having better anti-obesity potential than aqueous extract.

Heterotrigona itama is a common stingless bee species found in Southeast Asia. Studies on the health benefits of its honey are limited in comparison with other stingless bee species. This study examines the antiobesity benefits found in stingless bee honey (SBH) from H. itama. The parameters used to measure the benefits were weight change, morphological structures, and biochemical characteristics. The research was conducted by using rats that were given a high-fat diet (HFD). In total 48 male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were given a formulated HFD to increase the levels of obesity, the HFD was administered with a value of 0.68 g/cm2. The duration of the treatment was six weeks, and the results show that the induction obesity using the HFD was successful. Following this, the rats were then treated with SBH (at dosages of 1000 mg/kg, 750 mg/kg or 500 mg/kg), with orlistat or with a placebo. Compared with typical obesity treatment methods, the one that used the three dosages of SBH showed a higher reduction in body mass index (BMI), percentage of body weight gain, adiposity index, and relative organ weight (ROW). The levels of liver enzymes (ALT, AST, and ALP) were also significantly lower in SBH-treated groups. The levels of triglycerides and LDL-cholesterol were significantly lower, while the level of HDL-cholesterol was significantly higher in comparison with the control obese group. In terms of morphological structures, the number of adipocyte cells was reduced, and the hepatocytes found in the liver were less prone to rupturing when treated with SBH. In conclusion, the administration of SBH led to an improvement in indicators associated with obesity reduction. SBH also possesses a hepatoprotective potential which can reduce the health risks related to obesity.
