Abstract Objectives We examined empathic accuracy, comparing young versus older perceivers, and young versus older emoters. Empathic accuracy is related to but distinct from emotion recognition because perceiver judgments of emotion are based, not on what an emoter looks to be feeling, but on what an emoter says s/he is actually feeling. Method Young (≤30 years) and older (≥60 years) adults (“emoters”) were unobtrusively videotaped while watching movie clips designed to elicit specific emotional states. The emoter videos were then presented to young and older “perceivers,” who were instructed to infer what the emoters were feeling. Results As predicted, older perceivers’ empathic accuracy was less accurate relative to young perceivers. In addition, the emotions of young emoters were considerably easier to read than those of older emoters. There was also some evidence of an own-age advantage in emotion recognition in that older adults had particular difficulty assessing emotion in young faces. Discussion These findings have important implications for real-world social adjustment, with older adults experiencing a combination of less emotional transparency and worse understanding of emotional experience.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to derive the determinants of young adults’ subjective and objective risk attitude in theoretical and real-world financial decisions. Furthermore, a comparison of the factors that influence young adults’ and older adults’ risk attitude is provided. Design/methodology/approach The paper relies on an experimental setting and a cross-sectional field study using data of the German central bank’s (Deutsche Bundesbank) PHF-Survey. Findings Young adults’ objective risk aversion is not constant but increases with stake sizes. Furthermore, young adults’ subjective risk attitude is a better predictor for their objective risk attitude than a set of commonly employed socio-demographics and economics like age or income. Moreover, young adults’ subjective risk attitude works as a mediator for the influence of their investable financial wealth on their objective risk attitude. Although young adults’ subjective risk attitude shows a gender effect, the influence of young adults’ gender on their objective risk attitude decreases with higher stake sizes. Compared to older adults, young adults generally show a similar degree of subjective risk aversion. However, due to stronger financial restrictions, young adults show a higher degree of objective risk aversion. Originality/value Although individuals’ financial outcomes depend on the financial behavior established in young adulthood, there is no study that simultaneously analyzes the determinants of young adults’ subjective and objective risk attitude in real-world financial decisions with a focus on young adults as a separate age group. The paper closes this gap in literature and additionally provides a comparison of the subsamples of young adults and older adults. The analysis in this paper reveals that young adults’ lower engagement in financial markets is primarily driven by their tight budget and not by a fundamental different subjective risk attitude.

Background: An external cue can markedly improve gait initiation in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and is often used to overcome freezing of gait (FOG). It is unknown if the effects of external cueing are comparable if the imperative stimulus is triggered by the person receiving the cue (self-triggered) or an external source. Objective: Two experiments were conducted to compare the effects of self- versus externally triggered cueing on anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) during gait initiation in people with PD. Methods: In experiment 1, 10 individuals with PD and FOG initiated gait without a cue or in response to a stimulus triggered by the experimenter or by the participant. Experiment 2 compared self- versus externally triggered cueing across three groups: healthy young adults (n = 16), healthy older adults (n = 11), and a group with PD (n = 10). Results: Experiment 1: Externally triggered cues significantly increased APA magnitudes compared to uncued stepping, but not when the same cue was self-triggered. Experiment 2: APAs were not significantly improved with a self-triggered cue compared to un-cued stepping in both the PD and healthy older adult groups, but the young adults showed a significant facilitation of APA magnitude. Conclusion: The effectiveness of an external cue on gait initiation in people with PD and older adults is critically dependent upon whether the source of the trigger is endogenous (self-produced) or exogenous (externally generated). These results may explain why cueing interventions that rely upon self-triggering of the stimulus are often ineffective in people with PD.

During a challenge or emotional experience, increases in arousal help us focus on the most salient or relevant details and ignore distracting stimuli. The noradrenergic system integrates signals about arousal states throughout the brain and helps coordinate this adaptive attentional selectivity. However, age-related changes in the noradrenergic system and attention networks in the brain may reduce the efficiency of arousal to modulate selective processing in older adults. In the current neuroimaging study, we examined age differences in how arousal affects bottom-up attention to category-selective stimuli differing in perceptual salience. We found a dissociation in how arousal modulates selective processing in the young and older brain. In young adults, emotionally arousing sounds enhanced selective incidental memory and brain activity in the extrastriate body area for salient versus non-salient images of bodies. Older adults showed no such advantage in selective processing under arousal. These age differences could not be attributed to changes in the arousal response or less neural distinctiveness in old age. Rather, our results suggest that, relative to young adults, older adults become less effective at focusing on salient over non-salient details during increases in emotional arousal.

Abstract Background: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is characterized by abnormal cellular adhesion to the endothelium, contributing to progressive vasculopathy and vaso-occlusion. The progression of the underlying pathophysiology in SCD with age is not well understood. We evaluated red blood cell (RBC) adhesion at clinical baseline to laminin (LN) in children and adults with HbSS, using the SCD Biochip.1 The SCD Biochip is a microfluidic device that recapitulates physiologic flow and allows quantitation of RBC adhesion to biological surfaces.1 Methods: This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore in the Bronx, NY and University Hospitals Adult Sickle Cell Clinic in Cleveland, OH between 2014 and 2017. Blood samples were obtained from 29 children 8 to 18 years of age (33 samples, 28 HbSS and 1 HbSS HPFH (hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin), 13 males and 16 females), from 61 young adult patients 18 to 40 years of age (117 samples, 53 HbSS and 8 HbSS HPFH, 32 males and 29 females), and from 20 older adult patients >40 years of age (38 samples, 16 HbSS and 4 HbSS HPFH, 9 males and 11 females). All blood samples were obtained at clinical baseline. Of the children, young adult, and older adult populations, 45%, 46%, and 40% were on hydroxyurea treatment, respectively. Adhesion experiments were performed using surplus whole blood passed at physiological flow through LN-immobilized microchannels, and quantified after a wash step via microscope based on published protocols.1 Median values were used for multiple samples from a single individual. Results: Adults had higher, more heterogeneous RBC adhesion (440 ± 654, N=81) than did children (90 ± 193, N=29, not shown, p<0.001). Young adults tended to have higher adhesion than older adults (n.s.), as well as children (P<0.001, Figure 1). Young adults also had higher pain levels (relative to children, P=0.002) and higher reticulocyte counts (relative to older adults, Table 1, p=0.011), despite a higher total Hgb (P=0.012). As expected, children had a higher hemoglobin F level than young adults (Table 1, 11.1 ± 6.74 vs 4.85 ± 6.90, p=0.011). Conclusions: Our data demonstrates that adult patients with SCD have higher and more variable adhesion compared to pediatric patients with SCD, and this may be especially true in young adults. Older adults tended to have lower adhesion (perhaps due to compensatory genetic mutations that allowed them to survive before optimal pediatric care), but this was not statistically significant. Recall, as recently as the 1970s half of all Americans with SCD died before the age of 15 years of age. However, modern children with SCD are being treated aggressively with transfusions or hydroxyurea, and their low overall RBC adhesion reflects either these interventions or an innate low RBC adhesion during childhood. Increased adhesion in RBCs from young adults with SCD is congruent with increased mortality in the transition population2, and strongly suggests that modern treatments, as currently prescribed and taken, are insufficient to completely reverse the abnormal red cell physiology seen in young adults. Young adults have an increased RBC adhesion, possibly reflective of the natural history of SCD, and may benefit the most from anti-adhesive therapies and intensive interventions. Lower adhesion in children with SCD may also reflect an overall improved response to therapeutic interventions in children. AbstractThe most common cognitive complaint reported by healthy older adults and young adults with traumatic brain injury (TBI) is memory difficulties. We investigated the effects of normal aging and the long-term effects of TBI in young adults on the susceptibility to incorrectly endorse distracter information on a memory test. Prior to a study phase, participants viewed a “pre-exposure” list containing distracter words, presented once or three times, and half of the target study words. Subsequently, during the study phase, all target words were presented such that, across lists, study words were viewed either once or three times. On the recognition test, TBI and older adult participants were more likely to falsely endorse “pre-exposed” distracter words viewed three times as being from the target study list, compared to non-head-injured young controls. Normal aging and head injury in young may similarly compromise one’s ability to reject highly familiar, but distracting, information during recognition. Older adult and TBI participants were also slower to complete the Trail Making task and had poorer output on a Digit Span task, suggesting these two populations share a deficit in executive function and working memory. Similar changes in frontal lobe function may underlie these shared cognitive deficits. (JINS, 2010,16, 556–565.)

Abstract The EngAGE Alexa app is a socially motivated exercise program targeting older adult-caregiver dyads to promote mobility independence. EngAGE provides exercise routines that older adults can perform in the home in conjunction with a messaging component to facilitate motivation from caregivers and a tracking component to monitor progress. This presentation will describe the qualitative results that have informed the app’s design and evaluation of its feasibility and functionality following a 14-week feasibility study in 10 dyads of older adult exercisers and their caregivers. The presentation will cover the perceived benefits of EngAGE’s older adult users (including “real world” clinically relevant improvements, the comprehensiveness of the exercises, and exercise knowledge gained), as well as likes and dislikes that contributed to our assessment of the app’s functionality. Finally, we will discuss how the feedback contributes to future directions in the development of the app’s features, supporting materials, design and content.

ABSTRACTBackground:Worry is experienced by many older adults, yet our understanding of the emotional experience of late-life worry is poor as findings regarding older adults are inferred from findings of studies conducted with young adults. In the present study, we aimed to characterize age differences in affect, self-reported arousal, and physiological arousal experienced during worry.Methods:Fifty-three young (M = 21.4, SD = 2.6 years) and 55 older community-dwelling adults (M = 69.1, SD = 8.1 years) participated in an experimental induction of worry or pleasant/neutral recall. Measures collected included: Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ), worry intensity item, Multiple Affect Adjective Checklist-Revised (MAACL-R), Self-Assessment Maniken arousal item, and heart rate. Standardized residual scores were calculated to represent change from baseline for self-report and psychophysiological measures.Results:Older adults had lower trait worry and worry intensity at baseline. A significant age by induction type interaction was found for the MAACL-R subscales of anxiety, depression, hostility, and positive affect. Compared with young adults, older adults experienced smaller changes in emotions in response to the worry induction than in the recall induction. For both worry and recall inductions, older adults exhibited less change in self-reported arousal and interbeat intervals from baseline compared with young adults.Conclusions:Findings from the present study illuminate both similarities and differences in the experience of worry for older and young adults. This study provides preliminary evidence for the characterization of late-life worry as generating less anxiety than worry during young adulthood.

Abstract Introduction Young adults have high combustible cigarette and e-cigarette use rates, and low utilization of evidence-based smoking cessation strategies compared to older adults. It is unknown whether young adults who try to quit smoking without assistance, with evidence-based strategies, or with e-cigarettes, are equally successful compared to older adults. Aims and Methods This analysis used a population-based sample from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health study of young adult (aged 18–24, n = 745) and older adult (aged 25–64, n = 2057) established cigarette smokers at Wave 1 (2013–2014) who reported having made a quit attempt at Wave 2 (2014–2015). Cessation strategies were: behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy, product substitution, 2+ strategies, and unassisted. Logistic regression estimated associations between cessation strategy and short-term cessation status at Wave 2 (quit, no quit); multinomial logistic regression predicted long-term cessation patterns at Waves 2 and 3 (sustained quit, temporary quit, delayed quit, no quit). Results No cessation strategy (ref: unassisted) significantly predicted short-term cessation. No cessation strategy (ref: unassisted) significantly predicted long-term cessation patterns for young adults. Substitution with e-cigarettes predicted short-term cessation for older daily smokers of ≥5 cigarettes/day (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 1.70; 95% confidence interval: 1.08, 2.67) but did not predict long-term cessation patterns. Conclusions Despite differences in cessation strategy use between young and older adult smokers, strategy effectiveness largely did not differ by age group. No strategy examined, including e-cigarettes, was significantly associated with successful cessation for young adults. More work is needed to identify effective interventions that help young adult smokers quit. Implications (1) Neither behavioral support, pharmacotherapy, nor product substitution was associated with short-term cessation for young or older adults compared to quitting unassisted. (2) Neither behavioral support, pharmacotherapy, nor product substitution was associated with longer-term cessation for young or older adults compared to quitting unassisted. (3) Substitution with e-cigarettes predicted short-term cessation for older daily smokers of ≥5 cigarettes/day but was not associated with longer-term cessation.

Abstract Real-world contexts may compensate for age-related changes in language production. We compared age effects on vocabulary richness (i.e., entropy) and grammatical complexity (i.e., clause length) in conversations with familiar interlocutors (i.e., significant other, friends, family members) versus with strangers. We collected thousands of 30-seconds speech samples from 61 young and 48 healthy older adults across four days using a portable audio recording device — the Electronically Activated Recorder (EAR). Bayesian multilevel analyses showed that participants used richer vocabulary and more complex grammar with familiar interlocutors than strangers. Young adults used richer vocabulary than older adults. Furthermore, older adults produced equally complex grammar with the significant other as young adults did, but simpler grammar with friends and family members. We found no age group differences in grammatical complexity with strangers (lacking statistical power). In sum, familiarity with the significant other may benefit older adults in producing complex grammar in real-world conversations.
