Abstract Chronotype is a measure of the time of day people prefer to be most active or to sleep. There is a known relationship between chronotype and engagement in physical activity in young and middle-aged adults, such that individuals with a morning chronotype engage in more physical activity compared to those with an evening chronotype. Our study aimed to replicate this finding in an older adult sample. Actigraphy can be used to measure both physical activity and sleep. Because of its ability to capture information about bedtime and arise time, actigraphy can serve as an objective measurement of chronotype. Participants were 159 older adults (ages 60-89, M = 74.73) who wore an ActiGraph GT9X on their non-dominant wrist for 7 days in a free-living environment. Chronotype was measured continuously using the midpoint of the ActiGraph-calculated sleep interval. We used multiple regression to determine the relationship between physical activity and chronotype adjusting for sex, age, and body mass index. Results suggest that while these variables explain a significant amount of variance in physical activity, R2 = 19.0%, F (4, 152) = 8.921, p < .001, there is no significant relationship between chronotype and total physical activity in our sample, ß= -.117, p = .114. These findings are inconsistent with what has been shown in younger samples and suggest that the relationship between chronotype and physical activity may change as one ages. Future research should consider whether particular physical activity intensities (vs. total activity) may have a relationship with chronotype in older adults.

The mean and standard deviation over 24 h for 3 groups of animals - active, intermediate and inactive - in physical activity units were 10948 ± 3360, 2611 ± 1973 and 484 ± 316 respectively. The differences were significant ( P = 0·004), demonstrating the ability of the method to distinguish between groups that can be visibly differentiated. The small within-animal physical activity standard deviation (18·85 PAU) obtained in another group, suggests that it also yields reliable physical activity measurements for non-human primates. The monitoring device used can discriminate between individual nonhuman primate physical activity levels in a free-living environment and does not alter daily behaviour. This makes possible the study of the relationship between physical activity and atherosclerosis in nonhuman primates.

In view of the demographic profile of the older adults in the United States, in the next two decades, cities and communities need to adapt the form, environment, and transportation systems to accommodate the growing aging population. In this article, I review two streams of literature in the mobility among the older population: the mobility/living environment and wellbeing; the relationship between living environment and mobility. I argue that two streams of literature should be combined to inform an interdisciplinary dialogue and a new agenda for future research.

Abstract Physical activity may preserve cognitive functioning in older adults. This study examined associations between objectively measured physical activity and cognitive functioning. We recruited participants (Mage = 75.38 years, SD = 5.99) with (N=26) and without (N=181) cognitive impairment from the University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Center (KU-ADC). We collected cognitive data representing verbal memory, attention, and executive function. Accelerometers (Actigraph GT9X) were used to measure physical activity 24 hours a day for 7 days in a free-living environment. Physical activity was categorized as moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) based on the Freedson (2011) Adult Vector Magnitude cut points. The association between cognitive functioning and total MVPA was evaluated by using multiple regression. We used factor analysis to create three composite scores (verbal memory, attention, executive function) from 11 individual cognitive tests. Compared to verbal memory and attention, results indicate that total MVPA was more strongly associated with executive function (β = 0.001, p = .024). These findings are consistent with the literature suggesting that executive function in older adults may benefit from physical activity. Future research should investigate the physiological mechanisms by which MVPA benefits executive function in contrast to types of activity that might benefit verbal memory and attention.

Abstract Greater fatigability in older adults may be moderated by physical activity (PA). However, what features of PA timing are most strongly related to fatigability remains unknown. We examined the relationship between variability of free-living activity patterns and perceived physical and mental fatigability using the Pittsburgh Fatigability Scale (PFS, 0-50pts, higher=greater fatigability) in older adults from the Developmental Epidemiologic Cohort Study (DECOS, n=57, age=70-91yrs, 61% female). We assessed PA using ActiGraph GT3X+ over 7 days. Mean activity, standard deviation (SD) of mean activity across days, and relative activity [(mean at each bin)/(total mean)] were calculated across 24-hours in 4-hour bins , adjusting for estimated rise-time. Lower SD of PA from 0-4 hours after rising was associated with greater PFS physical scores (r=-0.27, p=0.05). No measures of PA correlated with PFS mental scores. In older adults with lower physical fatigability, associations with greater variability in activity may indicate larger energy reserves.

Objective: The present study examined how expectations regarding aging (ERA) influence physical activity participation and physical function. Method: We surveyed 148 older adults about their ERA (ERA-38), health-promoting lifestyles (HPLP-II), and self-rated health (RAND-36). We tested the mediating effect of physical activity on the relationships between ERA and physical function. Results: Positive expectations were associated with more engagement in physical activity ( B = 0.016, p < .05) and better physical function ( B = 0.521, p < .01). Physical activity mediated the relationship between ERA and physical function ( B = 5.890, p < .01, indirect effect 0.092, CI = [0.015, 0.239]). Discussion: ERA play an important role in adoption of physically active lifestyles in older adults and may influence health outcomes, such as physical function. Future research should evaluate whether attempts to increase physical activity are more successful when modifications to ERA are also targeted.

The purpose of this article is to review the potential of Tai Chi Chuan as a mode of physical activity that could have cognitive benefits for older adults and to provide potential directions for future research. A brief introduction to Tai Chi Chuan and its related physical benefits is provided. In addition, the empirical literature related to Tai Chi Chuan and cognition is reviewed. Potential mediators of the relationship between Tai Chi Chuan and cognition, including physical resources, disease status, and mental resources, are discussed. Based on the limitations of the extant literature, it is argued that future research in this area must provide more detailed descriptions of Tai Chi Chuan, particularly in terms of intensity and program progression. Consideration of the specific type of cognition that is expected to benefit is also encouraged, and approaches for further efforts to understand how Tai Chi Chuan affects cognition are recommended.

Understanding periods of the year associated with higher risk for falling and less physical activity may guide fall prevention and activity promotion for older adults. We examined the relationship between weather and seasons on falls and physical activity in a three-year cohort of older adults with glaucoma. Participants recorded falls information via monthly calendars and participated in four one-week accelerometer trials (baseline and per study year). Across 240 participants, there were 406 falls recorded over 7569 person-months, of which 163 were injurious (40%). In separate multivariable regression models incorporating generalized estimating equations, temperature, precipitation, and seasons were not significantly associated with the odds of falling, average daily steps, or average daily active minutes. However, every 10 °C increase in average daily temperature was associated with 24% higher odds of a fall being injurious, as opposed to non-injurious (p = 0.04). The odds of an injurious fall occurring outdoors, as opposed to indoors, were greater with higher average temperatures (OR per 10 °C = 1.46, p = 0.03) and with the summer season (OR = 2.69 vs. winter, p = 0.03). Falls and physical activity should be understood as year-round issues for older adults, although the likelihood of injury and the location of fall-related injuries may change with warmer season and temperatures.

This review aimed to identify, evaluate, and synthesize the scientific literature on mobile health (mHealth) interventions to promote physical activity (PA) or reduce sedentary behavior (SB) in cancer survivors. We searched six databases from 2000 to 13 April 2020 for controlled and non-controlled trials published in any language. We conducted best evidence syntheses on controlled trials to assess the strength of the evidence. All 31 interventions included in this review measured PA outcomes, with 10 of them also evaluating SB outcomes. Most study participants were adults/older adults with various cancer types. The majority (n = 25) of studies implemented multicomponent interventions, with activity trackers being the most commonly used mHealth technology. There is strong evidence for mHealth interventions, including personal contact components, in increasing moderate-to-vigorous intensity PA among cancer survivors. However, there is inconclusive evidence to support mHealth interventions in increasing total activity and step counts. There is inconclusive evidence on SB potentially due to the limited number of studies. mHealth interventions that include personal contact components are likely more effective in increasing PA than mHealth interventions without such components. Future research should address social factors in mHealth interventions for PA and SB in cancer survivors.

The aim of this study was to longitudinally investigate the association between resilience and mental health in older adults and to determine the influence of physical activity on this relationship. A total of 291 older adults were included in a 2-year follow-up study. Adjusted linear regression models evaluated the association between resilience at baseline and mental health after 2 years in sufficiently and insufficiently physically active older adults. A negative correlation was found between resilience at baseline and depression, anxiety, and stress after 2 years for the overall sample. This association changed after stratifying the group. Sufficiently physically active individuals made greater use of the resilience components “Self-Sufficiency” and “Perseverance,” whereas insufficiently physically active individuals made greater use of “Meaning of Life” and “Existential Singularity.” Physical activity can influence the relationship between resilience and mental health. These results can help guide the devising of more effective interventions for this age group.

Objectives: To explore the effects of membership in a fitness program for older adults on social isolation, loneliness, and health. Method: Using survey responses from SilverSneakers members and matched nonmembers, regression path analysis was used to examine the influence of SilverSneakers membership on physical activity, social isolation, loneliness, and health, and the interrelationships among these concepts. Results: SilverSneakers membership directly increased physical activity and self-rated health, directly decreased social isolation, and indirectly decreased loneliness. Decreased social isolation and loneliness were associated with better self-rated health: social isolation and loneliness had independent direct effects on health, while social isolation also had an indirect effect on health mediated through loneliness. Discussion: Members of SilverSneakers experienced better health through increased physical activity, reduced social isolation, and reduced loneliness. Future research should explore independent effects of social isolation and loneliness on health and the mechanisms by which membership reduces social isolation and loneliness.
