Abstract Two hundred sows (Camborough, PIC, Hendersonville, TN) at d 35 post-breeding were enrolled into one of four treatments to assess the required arginine level for sow reproduction. For gilts, the grams of arginine and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) per treatment consisted of: 102 g/0.69% (T1), 107 g/0.73% (T2), 112 g/0.77% (T3), and 121 g/0.83% (T4). For sows, grams of arginine and SID per treatment consisted of: 102 g/0.69% (T1), 107 g/0.73% (T2), 111 g/0.76% (T3), and 119 g/0.81% (T4). The lactation grams of arginine SID per treatment consisted of: 168 g/1.14% (T1), 176 g/1.20% (T2), 186 g/1.27% (T3), and 201 g/1.37% (T4). All diets were formulated to meet or exceed NRC. Sows were weighed farrowing and weaning weights, daily feed intake, and individual piglet and litter weights were collected. Data were analyzed as a randomized complete block design with parity as the block using the PROC MIXED procedure of SAS with the sow being the experimental unit. The feeding of different levels of SID arginine did not affect (P > 0.05) sow average daily feed intake, wean-to-estrus interval, or stillborn percent. Increasing SID arginine resulted in a linear increase (P = 0.04) in sow weaning weights (-4.41, -3.44, -4.40, and 0.61). Increasing SID arginine resulted in a tendency for a linear decrease in percent bred (100.00, 100.00, 100.00, 95.83, P = 0.06) and pre 48-hr mortality (7.58, 5.12, 4.35, 5.86, P = 0.10). Increasing levels of SID arginine resulted in no differences in piglet growth characteristics or removal or mortality percentage. Overall, the feeding of increasing levels of SID arginine resulted in improved sow weight at the time of weaning.

Abstract There is a continued industry focus to decrease FCR (Pierozan, 2016), which means less feed per kg body tissue, and therefore vitamins need to be further concentrated in less and less feed to reach the same vitamin supplementation per kg of body tissue. A study was conducted to determine the response of pigs to different levels of vitamin supplementation based on the 2018 BASF Industry vitamin supplementation survey. Pigs were stressed to simulate commercial stress conditions. A total of 240 (PIC 337 x Camborough) pigs were used in a randomized complete block design with pen as the experimental unit, treatment as the fixed effect, and block as the random effect (4 pigs/pen x 5 treatments x 12 replications). Pigs were blocked by sex and weight and fed corn/soy diets pelleted at 80C and formulated to meet or exceed current NRC (2012) recommendations. The stress imposed to simulate commercial conditions consisted of dirty floors, 1.65 m2/pig, on 7th day of trial, pigs were dosed with 1,000,000 E. Coli bacteria and 200,000 Salmonella bacteria. Treatments were NRC, low 25%, AVG, high 25% and high 5% vitamin supplementation. At finishing, vitamin supplementation increased ADG up to high 5% vitamin supplementation (750, 795, 831, 852, and 871 g, P < 0.05, respectively), improved FCR up to Hi 5% (3.21, 3.05, 2.91, 2.82 and 2.71, P < 0.05, respectively). Vitamin supplementation decreased finishing mortality up to high 5% vitamin supplementation (9.02, 7.43, 6.15, 4.81 and 4.02%, P < 0.05, respectively), improved lean cuts up to Hi 25% (57.5, 59.1, 60.5, 61.3 and 62.1, P < 0.05, respectively). The profit in $/kg pig and return on extra vitamin supplementation was from low 25 to AVG $0.1381/kg and 39x, respectively, from AVG to Hi25% was $0.0771/kg and 13X, and from Hi 25% to Hi 5% was $0.1259/kg and 38X.

Abstract Five wheat cultivars (8/172, 8/70, Tammuz/4, Guard and 124) were planted in the field at the Baladrooz district, Diyala province, Iraq during winter season 2011 to monitor the emergence of Ug 99 on different wheat cultivars and evaluate their performance under similar conditions in the field. The experimental unit consisted of 15 plots in area 25 m2 for each plot according to randomized complete block design. Results showed all cultivars of wheat were not exposure to infection by the black stem rust disease (Ug 99), cultivar of 8/172 gave the highest number of spikes /m2, weight of grains /m2 (g) and weight of grains /25 m2 (g) from another treatments which recorded (401.0, 601.5g and 15037.5 g) respectively. Wheat cultivars of Tammuz/4 and 124 gave the highest total weight of 50 plants which recorded (140 g), whereas Tammuz/4 surpassed other treatments in plant height (79 cm) and 124 cultivar was superior from other treatments in weight of 1000 grains (36.3 g).

Abstract An experiment was conducted with 430 sows to evaluate the ideal standardized ileal digestible (SID) Val:Lys on sow and litter performance during an 18.6-d lactation period. The SID Val:Lys ratios measured were based on the previously published literature and then values above and below reported values. Sows were randomly allotted within parity block (parity 1, parity 2, and parity 3+) to one of five corn–soybean meal-based lactation diets formulated to contain different levels of SID Val:Lys (0.50, 0.62, 0.75, 0.88, and 1.00, respectively). All diets were formulated to be isocaloric (3.35 ME Mcal/kg) with 0.95% SID Lys and contained vitamins and minerals that exceeded recommendations (NRC, 2012). Experimental diets were given to sows from 112 d of pregnancy throughout the 23-d lactation period. Litters were standardized within 48 h after farrowing. Sows were fed with the Howema computerized feeding system that mixed the high and low diets to create the intermediate diets, weighed the feed for each sow and then delivered the feed to each individual feeding hopper to record daily sow feed intake during lactation. Data were analyzed as a randomized complete block design using the PROC MIXED procedure of SAS with sow as the experimental unit and treatment as a fixed effect and parity as the random effect. Results were considered significant at P ≤ 0.05 and considered a trend at P > 0.05 and P ≤ 0.10. Sow ADFI was not significantly different (5.2, 5.2, 5.2, 5.0, and 5.4 ± 0.15 kg/d, respectively). On average, sows consumed ~45 g of SID Lys per day. Sow wean to estrus (5.2, 4.7, 5.3, 5.5, and 4.5 ± 0.32 d, respectively) was not different as the Val:Lys ratio changed. Increasing the Val:Lys ratio resulted in no differences (2.66, 2.64, 2.76, 2.61, and 2.62 ± 0.08 kg; P > 0.10) in average daily litter gain. There were no differences in sow weight loss or subsequent total born across the dietary treatments. Overall, increasing levels of SID Val:Lys did not change sow reproductive performance or piglet growth rate.

Abstract The objective was to determine the effects of different standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine (Lys) specifications on performance of grow-finish pigs. A total of 2,106 pigs (PIC 359×Camborough, initially 22.0±0.43 kg) were used in a 72-d growth trial with 27 pigs per pen and 13 pens per treatment in a randomized complete block design. Pigs were fed corn-soybean-meal-based diets in three phases from 22-41, 41-62, and 62-91 kg body weight (BW). Treatments consisted of low (L) or high (H) SID Lys in each phase: LLL (1.05, 0.88, and 0.73%); LLH (1.05, 0.88, and 0.82%); LHH (1.05, 0.99, and 0.82%); HLL (1.18, 0.88, and 0.73%); HHL (1.18, 0.99, and 0.73%); and HHH (1.18, 0.99, and 0.82%). Lysine curves from PIC2008 and PIC2016 nutrient specification manuals were used to estimate SID Lys levels for L or H diets, respectively. Data were analyzed using generalized linear mixed models with pen as the experimental unit. From 22-41 kg, feeding high Lys improved (P&lt; 0.10) average daily gain (ADG), feed efficiency (G:F), and final BW compared to low Lys. From 22-62 kg, feeding HH Lys increased (P&lt; 0.05) ADG compared feeding LL or HL Lys. Pigs fed HH Lys or LH Lys had improved (P&lt; 0.05) G:F compared to those fed LL Lys. Pigs fed LH or HH Lys had greater (P&lt; 0.05) final BW compared to pigs fed HL. Pigs fed HH Lys had greater (P&lt; 0.05) feed intake compared to pigs fed HL. From 22-91 kg, there was no evidence for differences in ADG, feed intake, G:F, or final BW. In summary, pigs fed 1.18% SID Lys had improved ADG, G:F, and final BW compared to pigs fed 1.05% SID Lys from 22-41 kg. Feeding a range of Lys specifications resulted in similar growth performance from 22-91 kg.

Abstract Our objective was to determine the effects of different pre-farrow feeding levels on sow and litter performance. On d 112 of gestation, a total of 309 sows (Camborough; PIC, Hendersonville, TN) were blocked by parity (P1, P2, P3+) and body weight and allotted to one of three treatments in a randomized complete block design. Treatments consisted of different feeding levels, which included: 1) 1.81 kg/d; 2) 2.72 kg/d; and 3) ad libitum access to feed. Sows were fed a corn-soybean meal-dried distillers grains with solubles-based lactation diet containing 3.36 Mcal of ME/kg and 1.17% SID Lys. Sows were weighed and visual BCS and caliper units were recorded at entry into the farrowing room at d 112 of gestation and at weaning. Daily feed intake was recorded from the beginning of the study until weaning. Litters were cross-fostered within treatment within 24-h after farrowing, and litter weights were collected at 12-h post-farrow and at weaning. Data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS with sow as the experimental unit and block as a random effect. Covariates were used if they significantly improved the model fit. Ad libitum sows had the greatest (P &lt; 0.05) feed intake from d 112 to farrow, followed by 2.72 kg/d and 1.81 kg/d treatments; however, no evidence (P &gt; 0.10) for differences in lactation feed intake were observed. Wean-to-estrus interval was greater (P &lt; 0.05) for ad libitum sows compared to sows fed 1.81 kg/d. Removal plus mortality rate was marginally lower (P &lt; 0.10) for sows fed 2.72 kg/d compared to sows fed 1.81 kg/d. No evidence (P &gt; 0.10) for treatment differences were observed in total born, stillbirth rate, and litter or piglet weight gain during lactation. In conclusion, results from this study do not support increasing feeding levels for sows prior to farrowing starting on d 112 of gestation.

Abstract Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the digestible energy (DE), metabolizable energy (ME), and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) in dried yeast (DY) and soybean meal (SBM) fed to pigs. In Exp. 1, 30 barrows with an initial body weight (BW) of 20.7 ± 1.01 were assigned to 5 diets in a randomized complete block design with period and BW as blocking factors. A basal diet was prepared to contain corn, canola meal, and soybean oil as energy-contributing ingredients. Four additional diets were prepared by adding 5 or 10 g/kg DY or SBM at the expense of energy-contributing ingredients in the basal diet to estimate the DE and ME in test ingredients by regression analysis. On a dry matter basis, estimated DE and ME in DY were 4,022 and 3,352 kcal/kg, respectively, and those in SBM were 3,876 and 3,601kcal/kg, respectively. There was no difference in estimated DE or ME between DY and SBM. In Exp. 2, 21 barrows (initial BW = 20.0 ± 1.31 kg) surgically fitted with T-cannulas at the distal ileum were assigned to 3 diets in a randomized complete block design with BW as a blocking factor. Two diets were prepared to contain DY or SBM as the sole source of nitrogen, and a nitrogen-free diet was prepared to determine the basal ileal endogenous losses of AA. The SID of AA, except for Gly and Pro, in SBM were greater (P &lt; 0.05) than in DY. The SID of indispensable AA in DY ranged from 64.7% for Thr to 86.1% for Arg, whereas those in SBM ranged from 84.8% for Thr to 92.3% for Arg. In conclusion, energy values in DY was comparable with SBM, but the SID of most AA in DY were less than in SBM.

Abstract The objective was to evaluate Yarrowia lipolytica (YL) as a lipid supplement fed to nursery pigs for the growth performance and apparent ileal digestibility (AID). Twenty-four pigs weaned at 21 d of age (12 barrows and 12 gilts with initial BW at 7.2 ± 0.6 kg) were allotted to 3 dietary treatments (n = 8) based on the randomized complete block design with sex and BW as blocks. The main effect was the dietary supplementation of YL (0, 1.5, and 3.0%, replacing poultry fat) with nutrients meeting or exceeding the requirements by NRC (2012) and fed to pigs for 21 d based on 2 phases. Feed intake and BW were recorded at d 0, 10, and 21 to calculate ADG, ADFI, and G:F. Fecal scores were recorded at every odd day from d 3 to 19. Pigs were euthanized on d 21 to collect ileal digesta for AID of nutrients in diets. Data were analyzed using Proc Mixed of SAS. There were no differences in growth performance among treatments. Whereas, pigs fed 0 and 1.5% YL had higher (P &lt; 0.05) AID of DM (55.0 and 52.2% to 40.2%, respectively) and GE (62.1 and 60.6% to 49.8%, respectively) than pigs fed 3% YL. There were no differences in AID of DM and GE between the pigs fed 0% and 1.5% YL. In conclusion, 1.5% Yarrowia lipolytica could be supplemented in nursery pig diets reducing 0.8% of poultry fat without affecting growth performance and AID of DM and GE.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of two types of incubation and two types of feeding on the performance of chickens and intestinal development of chicks during the pre-starter phase (1 to 7 days of age). One-year-old male Ross® chicks were used. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design, in a 2x2 factorial design, with two types of feed processing (bran and micropelleted) and two types of incubation machines (single and multiple stage), totaling four treatments, with four treatment repetitions each. Twelve birds per experimental unit were used, totaling 192 animals. Performance evaluations were conducted, such as mean weight, weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion, bowel weight and size, and percentage of intestine in relation to live weight. Histomorphometric tests on the height of the villi and depth of the duodenal crypts were also performed. The two incubation machines did not influence any of the analyzed variables. Even though both had the same composition, the micropelleted feed resulted in positive gains for the performance variables: average weight, weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion when compared to the meal, but was unable to significantly influence the morphometric measurements of the duodenum of chicks in the pre-starter phase.

Abstract Litter sizes in commercial pig production have increased substantially over recent years; however, farrowing pen sizes have generally not changed over the same time period. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of farrowing pen size on piglet pre-weaning growth and mortality. Differences in pen size were created by varying the width of pens of the same length, increasing the creep area available to the piglets. The study used a total of 1,786 litters in a randomized complete block design to compare two Farrowing Pen Size treatments (FPS): Standard (pen width 1.52 m) and Increased (pen width 1.68 m). Litter sizes were equalized across treatments (12.9 ± 1.95 piglets) at 24 h after birth using cross-fostering. Litter weights were collected at birth and weaning (21.3 ± 2.08 d); pre-weaning mortality was recorded. The experimental unit was the litter; models included FPS and replicate. Farrowing Pen Size had no effect (P &gt; 0.05) on litter size at birth (12.8 and 13.0 for the Standard and Increased FPS, respectively), after cross-fostering (12.9 for both treatments), or at weaning (11.2 and 11.3, respectively). There was no effect (P &gt; 0.05) of FPS on total litter or average piglet weight at birth, after cross-fostering, and at weaning. These results suggest no benefit in piglet performance from increasing the width of farrowing pens. As litter sizes continue to increase in commercial production, further research is warranted to re-evaluate the impact of farrowing pen size on pre-weaning mortality.

Abstract Integrating trees into pastures, a practice known as silvopasture, may benefit livestock in the summertime through the provision of shade. The purpose of this project was to compare the behavioral patterns of sheep grazing in silvopastures and open pastures. Black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) and honeylocust (Gleditisia triacanothose L.) based silvopasture systems were compared with open pastures in a randomized complete block design with three blocks over two summers. Behavior measures were recorded within a replicate within a week, and these measures were taken sequentially within three experimental periods. Ewe lambs (n = 3) within each experimental unit were equipped with a wideband audio-recording device to detect prehension events. Time-lapse cameras documented sheep behavior every 60 s. In the silvopastures, the lambs spent over 90% of daylight hours within shade from trees. Lambs in silvopastures spent more time lying down than animals in the open pastures (P ≤ 0.01), while lambs in the open pastures spent more than 2 h longer each day standing (P &lt; 0.0001). Lambs in the black walnut silvopastures spent more time grazing (488 ± 14 min · d−1) than lambs in the honeylocust silvopastures (438 ± 14 min · d−1; P = 0.0493) and lambs in the open pastures (417 ± 14 min · d−1; P = 0.0026). There was no difference in grazing time for lambs in the latter two systems (P = 0.5597). Spectral analysis of the imagery revealed that the lambs in the black walnut silvopastures grazed more frequently than the lambs in the other systems for both years. The acoustic analysis, though limited by recorder durability to 47 complete recordings, revealed no difference in total bites taken per day (P ≥ 0.7222) or in the morning (P ≥ 0.2069), afternoon (P ≥ 0.5816), and evening periods (P ≥ 0.9337). Silvopastures provide an opportunity to improve lamb comfort in the summer.
