Abstract This article reports on a study of interfaces to long-lived digital humanities (DH) resources using an innovative combination of research methods from book history, interface design, and digital preservation and curation to investigate how interfaces to DH resources have changed over time. To do this, we used the Internet Archive’s Wayback machine to investigate the original presentation and all subsequent changes to the interfaces of a small sample of projects. The study addresses the following questions: What can we learn from a study of interfaces to DH material? How have interfaces to DH materials changed over the course of their existence? Do these changes affect the way the resource is used, and the way it conveys meaning? Should we preserve interfaces for future scholarship? We show that a valuable information may be derived from the interfaces of long-lived projects. Visual design can communicate subtle messages about the way the resource was originally conceived by its creators and subsequent changes show how knowledge of user behaviour developed in the DH community. Interfaces provide information about the intellectual context of early digital projects. They can also provide information about the changing place of DH projects in local and national infrastructures, and the way that projects have sought to survive in challenging funding environments.

Even though Amazon.com has received most of the initial hype and publicity surrounding e-commerce, eBay has quietly built an innovative business truly suited to the Internet. Initially, Amazon sought to merely replicate a catalog business model online. Its technology may have been innovative- but its business model was not. On the other hand, eBay recognized the unique nature of the Internet and enabled both buying and selling online with spectacular results. Its auction format was a winner. eBay also clearly demonstrated that profits do not have to come in the way of growth—an argument that Bezos never tired of making. Amazon was initially focused on BN.com as a competitor. Over time, Amazon came to recognize eBay as the competitor. Its initial foray into auctions was a spectacular failure. Now, Amazon is trying to compete with eBay by facilitating selling and strengthening its affiliates program.

BACKGROUND Given the fast ongoing progression of the Internet and the increase in health information available from disparate sources, it is important to understand how these changes impact the online health information-seeking behavior of the population and the way of managing one’s health. OBJECTIVE This paper aims at describing the evolution of Internet use as a source of health information between 2010 and 2017, as well as the characteristics of online health information-seekers, the topics of interest, the sources of information, and the trust in this information and the potential impact on behavior. METHODS Data from French nationally-representative surveys Health Barometers were used (N=4,141 in 2010, 4,811 in 2014 and 6,255 in 2017.) Evolutions over time were assessed using chi-2 tests. Associations with sociodemographic characteristics and health status were evaluated using logistic regression models. RESULTS The use of the Internet as a source of health information rose between 2010 and 2014 (from 37.3% to 67.9%, P<.0001) but decreased significantly in 2017 (60.3%, P<.0001). Overall, the profile of health information-seekers compared to non-seekers did not change over time. They were more likely to be women, to be younger, to have a higher educational level, to have a higher household income and to be executives. Between 2014 and 2017, the proportion of those who did not pay attention to the source of information significantly increased to reach 39.7% (P<.0001). In 2017 as in 2014, health-related websites for general population remained the first source of information (38.6%) while institutional websites were the third (8.1%). If the credibility given to the online information is good for a large part of the information seekers since 2010 (more than 80%), it slightly decreased between 2014 and 2017 (P=.048). Above the individual characteristics, credibility was the main determinant of the way of managing one’s health (in 2017: OR=4.62; 95%CI=[3.35;6.36]). CONCLUSIONS After a rapid growth in the Internet use for seeking health information in the 2010-2014 period, a decrease was recorded in 2017 linked to a decreasing trust in the quality and reliability of information found online. These findings underlined the need for public health authorities to increase citizens’ eHealth literacy and/or to provide alternative trustworthy sources combining the popularity and accessibility of general health-information websites.

Increasing focus on e-commerce will change the way we look at human-computer interface design. In particular, we will need to be more customer-centric – in addition to being user-centric – and incorporate both usability and business objectives in our designs. Our designs will need to consider the end-to-end customer experience rather than focusing simply on the functional objectives of the application itself. The customer experience itself will determine how the users/customers view the company itself in terms of a viable and trustworthy brand on an off the Internet. To achieve these goals, we will need to address some fundamental issues related to the ART ( Access, Relationship, and Trust) of designing interfaces. Although our profession is well suited for this role because of our user-centric roots, the onus will be on us to step up to the challenge and own the end-to-end customer experience.

This chapter shifts the focus to the third and final stabilization phase of the political communication cycle (PCC). During the stabilization phase, a new political communication order (PCO) takes shape through the building of norms, institutions, and regulations that serve to fix the newly established status quo in place. This status quo occurs when formerly innovative political communication activities become mundane, yet remain powerful. Much of the chapter details the pattern of communication regulation and institution construction over time. In particular, this chapter explores the instructive similarities and key differences between the regulation of radio and the internet, which offers important perspectives on the significance of our current place in the PCC and the consequences of choices that will be made over the next few years.

The Conclusion returns to the guiding questions introduced in the Introduction, looking at the way in which the book’s chapters answered them. As such, it identifies recurring themes, experiences, structures, motives, and trends over time. By summarizing the result of the chapters’ research into the interaction between the Secretaries-General and the Security Council, some lessons are identified on the changing calculus of appointments, the conditions and relevance of the international context, the impact of different personalities in that interaction, the changes in agenda and composition of the Council as well as different formats of interaction and different challenges to be met in the realm of peace and security, administration, and reform, as well as concepts and norms. Taken together, they also illustrate the potential and limitations of UN executive action.

Chapter 5 outlines the ways in which civil society is largely associated with “women” and the “local,” as a spatial and conceptual domain, and how this has implications for how we understand political legitimacy and authority. The author argues that close analysis reveals a shift in the way in which the United Nations as a political entity conceives of civil society over time, from early engagement with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to the more contemporary articulation of civil society as consultant or even implementing partner. Contemporary UN peacebuilding discourse, however, constitutes civil society as a legitimating actor for UN peacebuilding practices, as civil society organizations are the bearers/owners of certain forms of (local) knowledge.

The chapter first surveys different types of figurative speech in Revelation, including simile, metaphor, symbol, and narrative image. Second, it considers the way images are interrelated in the narrative world of the book. Third, it notes how the images draw associations from various backgrounds, including biblical and later Jewish sources, Greco-Roman myths, and the imperial cult, and how this enriches the understanding of the text. Fourth, the chapter looks at the rhetorical impact of the imagery on readers and stresses in particular its evocative, persuasive, and parenetic function together with its emotional effect. And fifth, it looks briefly at the way reception history shows how the imagery has engaged readers over time. Thus, illustrated by numerous examples, it becomes clear how essentially the imagery of the book of Revelation constitutes and determines its theological message.

Describes a six‐year study of children’s Internet usage which shows how preferences and habits have changed over time; this was conducted by SpectraCom Inc and Circle 1 network. Explains the research methodology and the objectives, which were to identify trends in the amount of time spent by children online now and in future, their opinions about the future role of the Internet in society and the future of e‐commerce, and parents’ roles in children’s online activities. Concludes that there is need for a more child‐friendly content in Internet sites and for more parental involvement, that children will be influential in the market for alternative devices like mobile phones, that online shopping is likely to flourish, and that children have a growing interest in online banking.
