Concussion has become a driving force behind forensic neuropsychology practice. This chapter offers vivid, concise, accessible strategies that seasoned forensic experts use in explaining concussion to jurors. Specific topics include explaining the pathophysiology of concussion, how a concussion is diagnosed, posttraumatic amnesia, Glasgow Coma Scale scores, the difference between head injury and brain injury, the typical symptoms of concussion and expected recovery course, the sports as a laboratory research model, problems with the concept of “postconcussion syndrome,” differentiating the literature on chronic traumatic encephalopathy and concussion, and discussing the persistent idea of a “15% miserable minority.” The chapter also provides strategies for explaining alternative narratives as to why a person might feel they have persistent symptoms months or years following a concussion, including diagnosis threat, misattribution, iatrogenesis, “the grass is greener” phenomenon, litigation effects, medication effects, and emotional factors.

In this study, in order to improve steering stability during turning, we devised an inner and outer wheel driving force control system that is based on the steering angle and steering angular velocity, and verified its effectiveness via running tests. In the driving force control system based on steering angle, the inner wheel driving force is weakened in proportion to the steering angle during a turn, and the difference in driving force is applied to the inner and outer wheels by strengthening the outer wheel driving force. In the driving force control (based on steering angular velocity), the value obtained by multiplying the driving force constant and the steering angular velocity,  that differentiates the driver steering input during turning output as the driving force of the inner and outer wheels. By controlling the driving force of the inner and outer wheels, it reduces the maximum steering angle by 40 deg and it became possible to improve the cornering marginal performance and improve the steering stability at the J-turn. In the pylon slalom it reduces the maximum steering angle by 45 deg and it became possible to improve the responsiveness of the vehicle. Control by steering angle is effective during steady turning, while control by steering angular velocity is effective during sharp turning. The inner and outer wheel driving force control are expected to further improve steering stability.

Recently, our research team has been considering to applying shape memory alloys (SMA) constitutive model to analyze the large and small deformation about the SMA materials because of the thermo-dynamics and phase transformation driving force. Accordingly, our team use simulations method to illustrate the characteristics of the model in large strain deformation and small strain deformation when different loading, uniaxial tension, and shear conditions involve in the situations. Furthermore, the simulation result unveils that the difference is nuance concerning the two method based on the uniaxial tension case, while the large deformation and the small deformation results have huge difference based on shear deformation case. This research gives the way to the further research about the constitutive model of SMA, especially in the multitiaxial non-proportional loading aspects.

The professional smuggling of mass consumption products develops when demand for a product is not adequately fulfilled by the legitimate market. The difficulties encountered in supplying are, in most contemporary cases, caused by real rarity of the desired product. For other cases, however, the rarity is largely virtual in that government taxes aimed at the product in question lead to increasing the product's price to a prohibitive end. This was the case with cigarettes in Canada between 1985 and 1994. Before both, the federal and provincial, governments decided to drastically decrease cigarette taxes in February 1994, the price for a pack of cigarettes was five to six times higher than the same product in the United States. This article begins with a brief review of the contribution made by economists in regard to contemporary smuggling. Focus will be aimed at common characteristics of the smuggling phenomenon across the world. Elements which are more particular to the Canadian smuggling situation will be identified as well. While the difference in the price of cigarettes between Canada and the United States would seem to be the undeniable driving force behind the development of smuggling activities at the countries ' border, one key question remains unexplained. Why was the volume of contraband unequally distributed across Canada even though the price of cigarettes remained largely consistent throughout all provinces? The level of organization of smuggling networks was much higher in Eastern Canada, and particularly in Quebec, than it was in the western provinces. It is argued that the reasons for this are not only due to price, but to a series of political, historical, and geographical factors which allowed cigarette smugglers to function better in Quebec than in the rest of the country.

4,6-Dimethoxy-3-methyl-1,3,5-triazine-2(3H)-thione crystallizes in two polymorphic forms, needles and plates. In the needle-shaped crystals (9a) the molecules occupy the crystallographic mirror plane, thus the layers are stacked along the b axis. The molecules of the other polymorph [plate-shape crystals, (9b)] are packed in a herringbone packing mode. Upon heating, (9b) undergoes a phase transition to form (9a). At 378 K the needles undergo O → S topochemically controlled methyl transfer in the solid state to produce 1-methyl-4-methoxy-6-methylthio-1,3,5-triazine-2(1H)-one in 75% yield. The enthalpy of the rearrangement is estimated to be −39.1 kJ mol−1. 1-Methyl-6-methoxy-4-methylthio-1,3,5-triazine-2(1H)-thione crystallizes in space group P21 with two crystallographically independent molecules in the asymmetric unit. Compound (9b) undergoes O → S methyl transfer in the solid state at 373 K. The rearrangement is topochemically assisted and the product, 1-methyl-2,4-bismethylthio-1,3,5-triazine-6(1H)-one, is obtained in quantitative yield. The enthalpy of the rearrangement is estimated to be −58.8 kJ mol−1. The crystal structures of the compounds as well as their DSC thermographs are described and discussed. Energy calculation by ab initio methods shows that the driving force for the reactions is the difference between the molecular energies of the pre-rearranged compounds and their products, 54.2 and 59.3 kJ mol−1 in the two cases, respectively.

Background: Calcaneal osteotomies are often required in the correction of hindfoot deformities. The traditional open techniques, which include a lateral or oblique incision, are occasionally associated with wound healing problems and neurovascular injury. Methods: A total of 122 consecutive patients who underwent a calcaneal osteotomy for hindfoot realignment treatment were included. Fifty-eight patients were operated using an open incision technique and 64 patients (66 feet) using a percutaneous technique. Clinical and radiologic assessments were performed preoperatively, at 6 weeks, and 1 year postoperatively. Results: The American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society scale scores and visual analog scale pain scores improved in both groups postoperatively. The difference between the groups was not significant. The results of the radiologic measurements pre- and postoperatively were not significantly different. No pseudarthrosis occurred in either group. The comparison of both groups showed a significantly lower risk for wound healing problems in the percutaneous group. The hospitalization time was significantly shorter in the percutaneous group. Conclusion: Because of the excellent results with the percutaneous calcaneal osteotomy, the authors feel encouraged to establish this procedure as a standard technique for calcaneus osteotomy, especially patients at high risk for wound healing problems. Although ultrafiltration and hyperfiltration have replaced many liquid phase separation equipment, both are still considered as “non–unit operation” processes because the sizing of both equipments could not be calculated using either the equilibrium stage, or the rate–based methods. Previous design methods using the dead–end and complete–mixing models are unsatisfactory because the dead–end model tends to underestimate the membrane area, due to the use of the feed concentration in the driving force, while the complete–mixing model tends to overestimate the membrane area, due to the use of a more concentrated rejection concentration in the driving force. In this paper, cross–flow models for both ultrafiltration and hyperfiltration are developed by considering mass balance at a differential element of the cross–flow module, and then integrating the expression over the whole module to get the module length. Since the modeling is rated–based, the length of both modules could be expressed as the product of the height of a transfer unit (HTU), and the number of transfer unit (NTU). The solution of the integral representing the NTU of ultrafiltration is found to be the difference between two exponential integrals (Ei(x)) while that representing the NTU of hyperfiltration is found to be the difference between two hypergeometric functions. The poles of both solutions represent the flux extinction curves of ultrafiltration and hyperfiltration. The NTU for ultrafiltration is found to depend on three parameters: the rejection R, the recovery S, and the dimensionless gel concentration Cg. For any given Cg and R, the recovery, S, is limited by the corresponding flux extinction curve. The NTU for hyperfiltration is found to depend on four parameters: the rejection R, the recovery S, the polarization β, and the dimensionless applied pressure difference ψ. For any given ψ and R, the recovery, S, is limited by the corresponding flux extinction curve. The NTU for both ultrafiltration and hyperfiltration is found to be generally small and less than unity but increases rapidly to infinity near the poles due to flux extinction. Polarization is found to increase the NTU and hence the length and membrane area of the hollow fiber module for hyperfiltration. Photosystem II (PSII), the light-driven water/plastoquinone photooxidoreductase, is of central importance in the planetary energy cycle. The product of the reaction, plastohydroquinone (PQH2), is released into the membrane from the QB site, where it is formed. A plastoquinone (PQ) from the membrane pool then binds into the QB site. Despite their functional importance, the thermodynamic properties of the PQ in the QB site, QB, in its different redox forms have received relatively little attention. Here we report the midpoint potentials (Em) of QB in PSII from Thermosynechococcus elongatus using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy: Em QB/QB•− ≈ 90 mV, and Em QB•−/QBH2 ≈ 40 mV. These data allow the following conclusions: 1) The semiquinone, QB•−, is stabilized thermodynamically; 2) the resulting Em QB/QBH2 (∼65 mV) is lower than the Em PQ/PQH2 (∼117 mV), and the difference (ΔE ≈ 50 meV) represents the driving force for QBH2 release into the pool; 3) PQ is ∼50× more tightly bound than PQH2; and 4) the difference between the Em QB/QB•− measured here and the Em QA/QA•− from the literature is ∼234 meV, in principle corresponding to the driving force for electron transfer from QA•− to QB. The pH dependence of the thermoluminescence associated with QB•− provided a functional estimate for this energy gap and gave a similar value (≥180 meV). These estimates are larger than the generally accepted value (∼70 meV), and this is discussed. The energetics of QB in PSII are comparable to those in the homologous purple bacterial reaction center.

This study deals with a competitive knowledge network (CKN) where participants desire to pass their personally important exams, and henceforth want to contribute and seek knowledge about exam-related issues they need to solve. Besides, CKN members are basically competing with each other since they all aim to pass the same exams. Therefore, from the contributor’s perspective, if the advisor fears that his/her advice can be detrimental to his or her own benefits, knowledge sharing (KS) intention within the CKN may be hindered by their expectation of competitive advantage. However, few studies were done about the effects of such fear and a sense of competition on KS continuance intention in the context of CKN. In this sense, our study aims to elucidate the effects of competition and fear on KS continuance intention in a mobile CKN. By using 296 valid questionnaires, we obtained very meaningful conclusions such that competition is a driving force rather than an obstacle to KS among CKN members, and fear also enhances members’ sustainable KS intention.

Background To assess whether patient sex contributes to the interindividual variability in alfentanil analgesic sensitivity, the authors compared male and female subjects for pain sensitivity after alfentanil using a pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic modeling approach. Methods Healthy volunteers received a 30-min alfentanil or placebo infusion on two occasions. Analgesia was measured during the subsequent 6 h by assaying tolerance to transcutaneous electrical stimulation (eight men and eight women) of increasing intensity or using visual analog scale scores during treatment with noxious thermal heat (five men and five women). Sedation was concomitantly measured. Population pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic models were applied to the analgesia and sedation data using NONMEM. For electrical pain, the placebo and alfentanil models were combined post hoc. Results Alfentanil and placebo analgesic responses did not differ between sexes. The placebo effect was successfully incorporated into the alfentanil pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic model and was responsible for 20% of the potency of alfentanil. However, the placebo effect did not contribute to the analgesic response variability. The pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic analysis of the electrical and heat pain data yielded similar values for the potency parameter, but the blood-effect site equilibration half-life was significantly longer for electrical pain (7-9 min) than for heat pain (0.2 min) or sedation (2 min). Conclusions In contrast to the ample literature demonstrating sex differences in morphine analgesia, neither sex nor subject expectation (i.e., placebo) contributes to the large between-subject response variability with alfentanil analgesia. The difference in alfentanil analgesia onset and offset between pain tests is discussed.

The Treatment Evaluation Inventory of Kazdin, French, and Sherick is a 19-item measure of the perceived acceptability of behavioural treatments. Development of two brief forms was based on data from two sources. For Study 1, data from 218 completed questionnaires were used to develop internally consistent brief scales. In Study 2 internal consistency and the validity of the brief forms were estimated for a set of 131 questionnaires. Item reduction was achieved by analysis of item-total minus item correlations. Brief forms with 3, 6, 9, and 12 items were proposed. Their internal consistency (Cronbach α) and construct validity were based on correlations of scores on each short form with the full scale scores and on comparing means of different forms. Discriminant validity was based on the difference between two groups (estimated effect size 0.7). Scores for all forms showed high internal consistency and correlated highly with total scale scores. Only the 12-item brief scale yielded mean scores similar to the full scale. The 3-item form could be used as a quick screen, and the 12-item form for more intensive purposes as it is most similar to the full-scale.
