Abstract Introduction The Veterans Team Recovery Integrative Immersion Process (Vet TRIIP) is a short-term multi-modality complementary, integrative immersion program for veterans with chronic pain, post-traumatic stress, and related symptoms. Geared toward Veterans, active duty servicemembers, family members, and caregivers, Vet TRIIP aims to honor and empower them to create healthy, happy, and productive civilian lives. This study evaluates the program to determine its impact on the quality of life and ways to improve and develop Vet TRIIP. Materials and Methods In total, 14 clients participated in the qualitative review of the Vet TRIIP program in San Antonio. The participants were interviewed related to their reason for participating, their most bothersome symptoms and the effects of Vet TRIIP on those symptoms, service provided that is most and least appreciated, suggestions for improvement, and things learned from Vet TRIIP that helped them daily. Responses were analyzed for emerging themes. Results The main reasons for participating were physiological and psychological needs, social support, and curiosity to address their reported symptoms such as pain, stress/anxiety, and depression. Vet TRIIP reportedly improved their quality of life and decreased stress. The participants liked most the support of the Vet TRIIP staff and the interventions such as reiki and massage. Other participants did not like acupuncture. Participants suggested the addition of professional psychological services could be helpful. They reported that emotional freedom technique (EFT/tapping) and guided breathing were most useful in their daily lives. Each participant reported that Vet TRIIP was a positive experience that helped with their pain, anxiety, and stress management, providing an improvement in their quality of life. It also imparted an eye-opening experience to nontraditional non-pharmacological interventions for pain, anxiety, and stress. Conclusions Evaluative studies on organizations that support Veterans are useful to gauge the effectiveness and impact. Through this study, Veterans expressed perceived strengths and weaknesses of the program so further development and appropriate services will be provided. Similar studies on the impact of non-profit organizations are encouraged. Vet TRIIP significantly impacts the lives of many through stress and pain reduction, potentially preventing suicide.

The dysfunction of the lower urinary tract (DTUI) is an abnormal pattern of the urinary control with loss of coordinated capacity storage, stocking and elimination of urine. In order to assess the impact of lower urinary tract dysfunction in their child’s caregivers, this series was performed to evaluate 30 cases of caregivers of children with voiding disorders. Applied HAD scales and SF-36. Of these, 60% (n = 18) had anxiety symptoms and 43.3% (n = 13) depressive symptoms. Despite the scale items of quality of life was above average, the items pain, general health, vitality, emotional limitations and mental health measures were below the average. Thus, the effect of voiding dysfunction in parents of children affects the mood and quality of life in their daily lives.

While children’s voice is core to paediatric care, their own assessment of future psychological needs is underexplored. We conducted a prospective observational study among children hospitalised for injury in Melbourne, Australia. Their expectations of psychological recovery at baseline (in hospital) were significant and substantial predictors of their quality of life and post-traumatic stress 6 weeks later, suggesting potential diagnostic value.

This study examined the impact of perceived social support on mental health and psychosocial functioning in combat veterans after military deployment, including veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and veterans with comorbid PTSD and alcohol use disorder. Veterans ( n = 139; female = 23) completed self-report and clinician-administered measures of social support, mental and physical health, functional impairment, and quality of life. The cohort was divided into high, medium, and low perceived social support based on averages of the total score from the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Relative to the low perceived social support group, the high perceived social support group reported fewer symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression. The high perceived social support group also reported a more diverse and embedded social network, less disability, and better quality of life. Of note, the high and low perceived social support groups did not differ on age, gender, education, race ethnicity, or combat trauma exposure. These findings highlight that perceived social support may play an important role in the treatment of postwar veterans as they transition back to civilian life.

BACKGROUND First responders are confronted with the traumatic event(s) in their work that has a significant toll on their psychological health and that may contribute to or result in post-traumatic stress injuries (PTSI) for many responders. Persons with a PTSI usually seek management therapies, which they hope will be effective. Evidence indicates that digital delivery of these therapies is an innovative, efficient and effective way to improve PTSI symptoms as in-person delivery. OBJECTIVE This project aims to implement and provide accessible, convenient and economical SMS text messaging services, known asText4PTSI, to first responders in Alberta, Canada, to prevent and improve the symptoms of PTSI among first responders and to improve their overall quality of life. We will evaluate post-traumatic symptoms and the impact of Text4PTSI on stress, anxiety and depression in relation to correspondent's demographic backgrounds. METHODS First Responders who subscribe to Text4PTSI receive daily supportive and psychoeducational text messages for six months. The text messages are pre-programmed into an online software program delivering messages to subscribers. Baseline and follow-up data are collected through online questionnaires using validated scales at enrollments of 6 weeks, 12 weeks and 24 weeks (endpoint). In-depth interviews will be conducted to assess satisfaction with the text-based intervention. RESULTS We hypothesize that participants who enrol in this program will have improved PTSI symptoms, increased or improved quality of life and significant reduction of associated stress, depression and anxiety symptoms, among other psychological concerns. Improvement will be determined in comparison to established baseline parameters. CONCLUSIONS Text4PTSI is a practical, economic and easily accessible intervention, which provides supportive text messages and serves as an acceptable and evidence-informed way of preventing and managing symptoms associated with PTSI for first-responders. Results from this research will be beneficial for practitioners and will inform policy and decision making regarding psychological interventions for PTSI.

Approximately 50% of autistic children experience high anxiety. Intolerance of uncertainty (tendency to react negatively to uncertain situations) is a key mechanism in the development and maintenance of anxiety. This study aimed to provide a descriptive, thematic analysis of the impact on uncertainty on the daily lives of autistic children and their families. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents and caregivers of 53 autistic children (including 3 dyads) aged 6–16 years to elicit examples of uncertain situations that the children found challenging and to explore the impact of these situations on family life. Thematic analysis revealed five overarching themes: child’s reactions to uncertainty, trying to reduce uncertainty, the impact of difficulties with uncertainty, the impact of uncertainty on parenting and the impact on parents. These findings provide a crucial understanding into the range of uncertain situations autistic children with anxiety experience. Anxiety-reduction approaches based on increasing tolerance to everyday uncertain situations could help improve well-being, quality of life and participation for autistic children and their families. Lay abstract Anxiety is common in autistic children. Research shows that this may be related to intolerance of uncertainty, which is a tendency to react negatively to uncertain situations. Understanding when, why and how autistic children respond to uncertainty is important in the development of anxiety programmes. We asked 53 (including 3 dyads) parents of autistic children about the types of uncertain situations that cause difficulties for their child and how uncertainty impacts on daily life for them and their families. We found that uncertain situations made autistic children and their families feel sad, worried, frustrated and angry through the themes: child’s reactions to uncertainty, trying to reduce uncertainty, the impact of difficulties with uncertainty, the impact of uncertainty on parenting and the impact on parents. There are lots of situations that are anxiety provoking for autistic children because of uncertainty, such as school. Programmes to reduce anxiety and increase autistic children’s ability to cope with everyday uncertain situations could improve quality of life for autistic children and their families.

Abstract Oral health-related quality of life can be defined as the perception of the impact that oral health has on the quality of life. The quality of life is characterized by a person’s perception of his/her social status and the activities he/she carries out in daily life, in relation to his/her standards, objectives, concerns and expectations, as well as the system of values and cultural conditions within he/she lives in. Objective: The objective of this study was to systematically review the dental literature to identify and classify relevant articles on the quality of life associated with the oral health of patients rehabilitated with implant-supported prostheses. Materials and methods: A systematic search of the literature on PubMed was performed for articles published between 2000 and 2021. The main method used was the electronic search using keywords such as: “quality of life”, “dental implant”. The articles found were subject to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Following a systematic search, a total of 249 publications were identified, of which only 9 met the inclusion criteria. Discussions: A small number of studies were found to meet the inclusion criteria and to present high levels of evidence. Therefore, more research in the field is recommended, as current research on quality of life in patients rehabilitated with implant-supported prostheses is still in the development phase. Conclusions: The quality of oral health could have an impact on patients’ daily lives and dental satisfaction (satisfaction with dental appearance, pain perception levels, oral comfort, functional performance and chewing capacity). Patients’ satisfaction with their dentition has a definite impact on the quality of daily life and perceptions of oral health.

Background/Aims: The term vulvodynia refers to vulvar pain of unknown origin lasting at least 3 months. Psychiatric comorbidities are a common feature and, along with pain, may severely affect patients’ wellbeing. We aimed to determine the characteristics of pain in vulvodynia, to correlate characteristics with symptoms of anxiety and depression, and to analyse the impact of these factors on patients’ quality of life. Methods: This cross-sectional observational study analysed pain, anxiety, and depression and the effects of these factors on quality of life. Pain, anxiety, and depression were assessed using validated tools in 110 women. Results: Statistical analyses found correlations between pain and anxiety and between anxiety and worsened quality of life. Patients often reported stinging, burning, pain, itching, and dyspareunia, pointing to the importance of temporal, localisation, punctate pressure, thermal, tactile sensitivity, and emotional tension characteristics. Most patients had severe pain related to psychiatric comorbidities and decreased quality of life. Conclusion: Using descriptors of pain quality and assessing anxiety and depression might help to define subgroups of patients that may benefit from different therapeutic approaches and thus enable treatments to be tailored to individual patients.
