This chapter summarizes the contents of the previous chapters and discusses what might be considered particularly Epicurean about Philodemus’ theories. In short, Philodemus’ views on poetry can be traced in part to Epicurean commitments regarding (i) the irrationality of the senses, (ii) how language functions, (iii) their empiricism, and (iv) education, including ethics and theology. In addition, Philodemus’ views on poetry reflects the Epicurean view that philosophy is the only truly worthwhile activity. There is no unified Epicurean theory of fine arts, and poetry does not have any particular or special role to play in human life.

The problem of reception of the antiquity through tapestries in the Russian historiography was considered. Using as an example the Flemish tapestries of the 15th–16th centuries from the Collection of the State Hermitage Museum, the transformation and popularity of ancient motifs in this art form were demonstrated, as well as their special role in the propaganda of power, high social status, and wealth. The following main elements of tapestries were analyzed: subjects, characters, costumes, and Latin banderoles. The methodology of tapestry analysis is similar to the one used by structuralists: an additional link (customer) is introduced in the author – text – reader research field. The subjects of the tapestries were compared with the plots of the corresponding ancient literary sources. As a result, it was concluded about different perception of the antiquity in the literature and fine arts. Tapestries reflect the attitude of customers to the political reality of that time. The Northern Renaissance and how it was influenced by the ideas of humanists embodied in the tapestries was discussed.

Having a place in the concept of landscaping, which is an important factor in human life for integration with nature, garden art has shown a continuous development since its formation back in history. The first examples of garden styles in history were shaped with the effects of religious, philosophical, and mythological ideas. As in all branches of fine arts, garden art is nurtured by historical insights of style, and the reflections of cultural heritages are visible in all the designs that appear. It can be understood that the basis of the professional and modern garden designs is the historical gardens, and they show a development in that direction. In order to establish and document the historical formation and development processes of garden art, initially a definition of the concept of garden was made and the historical development of garden art was examined within the garden art styles of Antiquity, Middle Ages, Far East, Islamic, and British periods, in the research forming this study. After that, the Renaissance period garden style, meaning ‘rebirth’, which forms the detail of this study is examined with its historical development, its characteristics, and samples, in detail.

It has been assumed that religiousness is one of the factors that are instrumental (though not normative) in shaping the life of an individual in a conscious way. In an attempt to determine what role family plays in human life, the above mentioned factor was perceived as vital in shaping the senses and meaning assigned to the family by an individual. The studies (presented in the context of life span developmental psychology) have an exploratory character and constitute an attempt to demonstrate and establish the type of relationship that exists between the cognitive perspective of an individual on the selected aspects of family life and the level and style of their religiousness. The methods applied: Questionnaire on the place of family in the course of life – MRŻ (Katedra Psychologii UPJPII – the Chair of Psychology, Pontifical University of John Paul II in Kraków 2015 – experimental version) author’s own design and Questionnaire on religiousness (by C. Walesa et al., KUL, 2014). The talk is going to include a presentation and a detailed study of selected cases chosen out of several dozens of completed questionnaires (the respondents included people from three age groups: early, middle and late adulthood).

Abstract The essay deals with the many boundaries set and exceeded by Roman Law when human corporeality is involved. In particular, the focus is on the strict correlation between body expression and socio-juridical marginalization, clearly visible in the case of prostitution in ancient Rome, but also in acting and in fighting in the arenas, activities sharing the same goal as prostitution: they were designed to bring pleasure to the senses. These forms of marginalization differ from the inexorable limit, already decrypted by Roman Law, set by humankindʼs bodily nature to the action of Law: Law is not in the position to “have the last word” on matters concerning human life, on which nature alone can “lay down Law.”

While the city is a multi-layered structure with a clearly separated private and public zone, creating mutual relations between the buildings. Camillo Sitte saw the city urban spaces as a work of art, które should be designed in such a way that the inhabitants feel safe and happy, as it is not just a show-off of technical skill, but an artistic undertaking. The article considers the nominative-derivational potential of the words polden and polnoch in the East Slavic languages. The nominative-derivational potential is understood as the ability of lexical units to produce nominative means. The objectives of the study include identifying the composition of the indicated vocabulary and the range of concepts they express for Old Rus and modern times. The analysis has involved about 200 units of nomination and showed that the East Slavic languages significantly developed these word families, with their nominative-derivational capabilities mainly realized in folk speech through rich lexical synonymy. The comparison has revealed a greater power of the word family polden compared to polnoch, as well as a greater formal-semantic variety of its derivatives, which is explained by its numerous meanings due to the special role of daylight in human life. The semantics of the source words determined the nature of the nominative spheres marked with derivative units (“Time”, “Nature”, “Man”), reflecting the accumulated socio-worldview experience of closely related peoples, their close relationship. The structure and meaning of derivatives in different languages have both common and special features. The commonnes is expressed by the unimodel formations and their synonymy (Rus. opolnoch, Ukr. opivnich, Bls. aponachy, Rusin. opivnich, upunochi), specificity – by their formal and meaningful uniqueness: Rus. mezhpolden ‘south side’, odnopoldenok ‘light time of day’, poldenoshnik‘milking bucket’, Ukr. adverbs pivdennishe, pivnichniche, Blr. names of mythological creatures, Rusin. dopoludnyar, ‘shepherdʼ, upidpoludne ʽ in the first half of the day’ and others. Together, they demonstrate the nominative-derivational potential of the names of the light and dark day time climax, which developed, inter alia, under the mutual influence of closely related languages.
